It was heartbreaking. A culmination of two friends communicating poorly and emotions flaring up. Usopp was beaten up twice earlier that day, and at this lowest point, was told that his beloved Merry wouldn't be able to sail. He was afraid it was the same for a fighter who wasn't able to fight, and his inferiority complex burned him hard. Luffy, on the other hand, was carrying the safety of his crew on his back, and had both time and a beatdown on Franky House to calm down. Both sides had the power of friendship and both sides lost.
The part at the end of the fight when luffy turned around and was crying was the part that did it for me. Like he knew it had to be done but it still tore him to shreds
@@nickpillow5692 Usopp was kind of wrong. Yes, the Going Merry was a gift from home, but Usopp only wanted to keep it for purely emotional reasons. Even when he saw that the ship was beyond repair, he STILL tried to fix it!
You have to remember that Luffy has a monkey brain in most aspects of life, except fighting and leadership. He is an actual genius when it comes to fighting and is a great leader instinctively. Luffy's ability to adapt on the fly and be creative in a fight is the second most broken thing about him [the first being his charisma]. So props to Usopp for the big-brain strategy, but there is no way he was winning. Even if he had days to prep more ammo [pepper, cactus, tabasco etc.], he would still lose despite doing more damage. Luffy also has an absurd tolerance for pain, so tabasco, pepper and like would not slow him down for long, despite the absurd amount of pain. Furthermore, with his battle experience and sheer physical superiority, it would be weird if he didn't dodge the shuriken shot from further away [even without gear second] when he can dodge bullets shot from a lot closer [celestial dragon at Sabaody]. --- This is my opinion on the fight. But damn it still stings every time I watch it again. P.S. Really enjoyed the video man! Sorry about the long asf comment.
Been trying to catch up on one piece so i can watch tekking without spoiling it for myself (Because i love you tekking!) But since i just finished watching water 7 i can finally watch one of these... Hell yes!
I think Usopp used everything he could in terms of resources so I don’t think he had the room to risk just having a bunch of pepper stars and shit especially on a time limit
A lot of people don’t realize that Usopp was fighting his own insecurities in that fight. It’s not a coincidence that this fight happened after Usopp was feeling useless.
35:40 "I only have one tabasco." "You should've been using more of these." Oda realized this technique was _too_ good. He had to save it for God Ussop's ascension to greatness.
For real. These are guys who can curb stomp and take a punch from a guy who can toss a building, can take a bolt of lightning. Can eat more than their body weight in food and digest it the next second and regenerate a knocked out tooth by drinking milk. They’re not just tacky, they’re supernatural beings overall. A rotten egg and pepper spray ain’t taking these guys out, they are not comparable to us at all XD XD
More importantly, they went 10000 meters high and after not being able to breathe correctly, and then they just could breathe well enough to fight properly on like, the same day
Well usopp got screwed up during alabasta when he got smacked in the face by that bat but was up not long afterwards and then only thing that happened was chopper put enough bandages on him to make a mummy jealous. Now that I think about it the extent of chopper's doctoring that at least I remember off the top of my head of the crew is to put bandages all over them lol
Dude I'm gonna be honest. I literally just now noticed hooty 10 months later in his plant fruit video. So I spent 10 minutes going to his previous videos seeing when hooty came about
That moment when Luffy and Ussop are arguing about Luffy's decision to get a new ship and tells Ussop that the Merry can't be repaired. The way the anime cut away as Luffy said it, then Ussop makes him say it again. The weight it hits with when it lands. Clearly Luffy is heart broken over the decision. However, in his own selfish anger, Ussop doesn't even register it when Luffy tells him the first time. The anime shows us this by cutting away. Then it comes back and Luffy says to Ussop that the Merry can't be fixed. Then it becomes real. The Merry isn't a ship but a friend who is dying. Merry has push herself beyond her limits for the crew she loved. Man, it had been a long time since anything had hit me that hard.
The background for this fight is so heavy, the challenge of becoming a true captain breakdown, gaining more strenght as Aokiji made clear, not being a spoiled child as Iceberg made clear, the help from Sanji always keeping an eye on the mood of the crew, Zoro supporting Luffy through the arc to digest the necessary changes to become a true leader. Just awesome.
on the youtube channel "totally not mark" mark reads one piece for the first time and he reviews the arcs from a standpoint of a writer (since he writes for his living) i can only advise his videos, its fascinatic how he sees this chapters even if you only watch the water 7 analysis
Usopp's true ingenuity really shined during this fight, and it's a shame that we haven't seen much of his serious side again. I get that he's somewhat of a comic relief character, but I remember watching this fight and seeing the vast combat potential our sniper held within. And Luffy being forced to demand respect as a Captain, even though this meant going against essentially one of his absolute best friends was heart wrenching.
One point I’ve seen being mentioned elsewhere about Sanji’s involvement is because of how in his childhood, Judge told him he was free to leave and it hurt him real bad, so he knew firsthand the damage such words could do, even if said carelessly
Sanji's input is one of the things I enjoyed the most about that arc - when sanji and zoro pulls luffy back into reality like that. kinda surprised people would forget about that?
Hey Tekking why you got Hooty on your door..... if you're not careful Hooty might try to steak the list and become even more powerful than he already is.....
@@joshinthesauce4636 wellllll if we talking current Barry with the list Hooty might be more powerful but if we talking about GOD Barry then no Hooty cant reach there unless he some how learns to do magic
Here’s a thought I think you might like Tekking! ^_^ What if Usopp had a bunch of impact dials and combined them together to make like a chain mail type set of armour made out of impact dials? He would basically have a set of armour that could absorb an enormous amount of damage. Haven’t quite thought of how you could re-disperse the energy from that damage but I’m sure it’s do-able. ^_^ “Edit” Now that I think of it he could straight up make a MCU style black panther suit that absorbs and re distributes damage. That would be pretty OP in my opinion. ^_^
Usopp forgot how much the Going Merry means to Luffy. For as smart as Usopp is, he really didn't take it into account for one second "Is he REALLY okay with giving up Merry?" when Luffy is going on about getting a new ship. No. No, he's not. He feels a lot of guilt because he knows Merry is like this mainly because of HIM. She absolutely wouldn't survive the Grand Line HOWEVER she didn't necessarily have to die at the point in time that she did had he and the crew taken better care of her. They knew they weren't shipwrights and yet they were still careless with her. That's why Luffy tells Merry "If anyone should be apologizing it's us." Usopp's big mistake, the real reason he didn't win this fight, is because he really thought he was the only one that cared for Merry. He didn't respect the fact that yes he patched up Merry, yes he saw her Klabautermann, but Luffy was the one charge of her care and the one Merry the ship-builder gave the ship to. Luffy loved Merry just as much as him, but *Luffy* is thinking of what's good for Merry, not Usopp.
I think Usopp knew that Luffy cared about Merry just as much, but he took it extremely personally because he helped so much with keeping Merry afloat and still she wasn't good enough for the grand line. The fact that Luffy seemed willing to let her go so easy made Usopp feel inadequate himself, as if he wasn't good enough either. He didn't have as much faith in himself as the crew had in him, so he figured he'd eventually get thrown out just as easy. At least, that's what I would assume based on his reaction.
I love love love Usopp in this fight. It definitely had old school Frank Miller Batman vs Superman vibes. I want to see more of this Usopp in One Piece. He was definitely monster level.
Yeah! Actually, that tense build-up episode brought me back to One Piece when it aired the first time on TV (Germany). Back then, I read the manga from the beginning, many years before the anime appeared. Life happened, duties, social life, etc. and I stopped One Piece in the mids of the Alabasta Arc. One day I zapped through the TV list and this Water 7 moment just happens. Knowing everything about the crew up until the mids of Alabasta and suddenly this heavy scene pops into my life. No music and this awkward feeling while they discuss the Merry... Damn, since then I'm totally back into OP, so frickin many years... It's crazy to follow a series for nearly 20 years and it's still on-going xD One Piece and Detective Conan, damn frickin sh*t...
This fight really got to me, I was watching One Piece back to back when it was still in the Big Mom's arc about two years ago, it took me by surprise as I didn't know Merry's fate and Usopp really loved that ship since it was Kaya's gift
@@LastGREATEST0 Not really Oda put a lot of emphasis on the fact that Usopp has to do it, or they're done for. Sugar about to touch a clueless Luffy and Law, or Perona getting them all hopelessly depressed including Robin. All she has to do when they're all captured is just cycle her ghost through them continuously then off them. The way that Franky Sanji and Zoro all booked it when they saw that Usopp actually had a chance to fight Perona shows. I'm pretty sure that Oda made those two characters to show that Usopp is necessary for the adventure.
I genuinely loved this fight when i watched it back when i was a kid!!! I really liked how serious Ussop was in the fight. That violent way of using ranged attacks. I wish we had more of that then these dumb plants. Also the crew was so torn throughout the fight.....heavy man.
So I was watching the horo horo no mi video and realised how legit great it would be for usopp to really bring out his traits. A: he is usually already not on the battlefield, the horo horo no mi would allow usopp to use party trick techniques in the thick of it while being intangible. Possibly an awakening or strong observation would allow him to control his projection and body at the same time as long as he can see, so his opponents think he is an intangible God but he's miles away sniping them to dead The ability to summon hollows would play right into usopps lie of having thousands of men as well as giving him lots of extra espionage options. Imagine how wano would go if usopp used a negative hollow on Kaido, hits him with a massive one and Kaido just be like . Man life sucks I'm gonna drink and kill myself... Oh wait no
I like what Zoro and Sanji after the fight. Zoro telling Luffy the burden of becoming a captain of a crew and Sanji stopping Chopper from healing Ussop so that his pride will not be broken. Love the dynamic of the monster trio.
Remember when luffy told katakuri that one should be prepared for anything in a pirate battle and there such thing as fair in a pirate battle I like to think that he learn it from this battle

Dang his enthusiasm always gets me and the marry part would have been pretty sad. Overall I agree this is one of the best fights, on just tactics and emotions.
I've noticed a lot of Usopp's pop greens are basically his old stuff in plant form, which has me wondering why he doesn't have an explosive cactus, like even the shuriken came back as platanus shuriken, the cactus seems too obvious to not do it.
The one thing I liked about this fight is Luffy is fighting someone around his height, Usually 95% of mostly Luffy fights are David vs Goliath like fights, Luffy never fights someone who is the same height that often.
I think Luffy moving through the pepper, Tabasco, and rotten egg was more of Luffy’s insane pain tolerances coming though and only disorienting to him even if it was severely disorienting.
As the captain Luffy has an authority. I wish they would bring that up at least one more time. If Luffy orders the crew to do something and he refuses to back down on that decision they have no choice but to obey. The only other choice is leaving the crew. That is what you accept when you join a pirate crew. That you are under the authority of the captain.
@@IK-yb5rn Yeah but that one went away quickly. I wish there was another where Luffy has to really put his foot down against a crew member who disobeys him. That he really has to put in that ultimatum of obey or leave.
Luffy vs Usopp in a seinen: Luffy doesn't hesitate and the first blow tears Usopp's head from his neck. This is the same guy who at this point in the story can push apart 2 skyscrapers with nothing but brute strength. I feel people sometimes forget that.

Luffy, on the other hand, was carrying the safety of his crew on his back, and had both time and a beatdown on Franky House to calm down.
Both sides had the power of friendship and both sides lost.
truth
The part at the end of the fight when luffy turned around and was crying was the part that did it for me. Like he knew it had to be done but it still tore him to shreds
Usopp was in a very emotional state and i don't blame him, luffy was right, but if i was in Usopp situation i would probably act the same way
Daniel Ferreira neither side was wrong which is what made it so impactful
Hell yes!
Wow, you're new? Welcome mate 😉
@@OeloDickAble actually been here since fullbringer arc in manga but yeah im new to the one piece for sure😅😅
I am actually going through the same thing and Spoiler alert to some one out there im at the episode where lucci shows off his Leopard fruit
I think Usopp used everything he could in terms of resources so I don’t think he had the room to risk just having a bunch of pepper stars and shit especially on a time limit
also luffy probably wouldn't get hit by the same move over and over
Thank you for your wise insight Batman
@@Mokey_MokeyLordofPunsthat’s not Batman that’s Bruce Wayne
A lot of people don’t realize that Usopp was fighting his own insecurities in that fight. It’s not a coincidence that this fight happened after Usopp was feeling useless.
Judging by this comment section everyone realised that
I really like how you put a lot of focus on the emotion build up and not just the fight
Finally. I’ve been waiting for a new video for what feels like days. I was having tekking withdrawal.

"I only have one tabasco." "You should've been using more of these."
Oda realized this technique was _too_ good. He had to save it for God Ussop's ascension to greatness.
This was actually the fight that got me to watch one piece, so so good.
Characters in one piece get their bones crushed while fighting meanwhile tekking talks about how he would lose if he would smell pepper.
You go put some pepper up your nose and see how you handle it. How long does it take for you to recover. Tekking got a point in my opinion.
@@Xel963 a normal human is different from an anime character,is the same as saying "break your bone and see what happens"
Are we just going to ignore that Tekking has Hooty from The owl House in front of his door.
I saw that and said “wait a minute”
To be honest I didnt even notice till I read your comment
I just noticed today
Hes been had it.
Man, it had been a long time since anything had hit me that hard.
can we appreciate the Hooty on Tekking's door.
I wonder if hes a Eda or Lilith stan
oh, thank god someone else saw it! I thought I was going crazy!
Hoot hoot
The background for this fight is so heavy, the challenge of becoming a true captain breakdown, gaining more strenght as Aokiji made clear, not being a spoiled child as Iceberg made clear, the help from Sanji always keeping an eye on the mood of the crew, Zoro supporting Luffy through the arc to digest the necessary changes to become a true leader. Just awesome.
on the youtube channel "totally not mark" mark reads one piece for the first time and he reviews the arcs from a standpoint of a writer (since he writes for his living)
i can only advise his videos, its fascinatic how he sees this chapters
even if you only watch the water 7 analysis
Ayyyy another Mark fan.I love his thoughts on One piece and his new theory on Shanks crack me up
Yes, he just reviews Fishman island
I really like his one piece analysis. i had never heard of him before and now im subscribed lol
I was going to say the same. His analysis of this battle, even if a bit short, is masterfully made.
@@regendthe___guy1507 what theory? That Shanks is evil? Pretty old theory.
I’m still sad 😢 this really pulled my heart strings.
Thank you for dedicating almost an hour to my favorite fight in one piece.
Tekking's dramatization of one piece is the level of excellence I need in the live action adaptation. 10/10
Yooooo u are so right 😂😂
Good thing Luffy's hat is non-flammable.
It’s not like straw burns easily or anything, am I right? 🤷♂️
That hat has so much plot armor it’s ridiculous
It's made of pure asbestos.
Only the great Buggy D Clown has ever damaged the strawhat.
Sanji's input is one of the things I enjoyed the most about that arc - when sanji and zoro pulls luffy back into reality like that. kinda surprised people would forget about that?
I just need to say. You rock kido... i wish this video was never ending... good job.
Hey Tekking why you got Hooty on your door.....
if you're not careful Hooty might try to steak the list and become even more powerful than he already is.....
I saw that and thought, "Does he watch The Owl House?"
@@edwardt.8704 he probably does cuz ever detail in the room has a reason for being there

"Arguments are always more emotional during sunset"
How many times do you think Buggy and Shanks had that which pole is colder argument during sunset?
i think water seven really shows just how well Zoro understands luffy and supports him
Here’s a thought I think you might like Tekking! ^_^
And blast open his innards.
1. I LOVED this fight. So emotional and impactful.
2. As a long time death battle I'm SO happy tekking gave a shout out.
This is one of my favorite fights in the series not for how powerful it was in terms of action but the emotional impact
That's why Luffy tells Merry "If anyone should be apologizing it's us."
Usopp's big mistake, the real reason he didn't win this fight, is because he really thought he was the only one that cared for Merry.
Nobody:
My Brain the entire video: "GAYFFINDOR"
Lol he actually made note of that in the first video he ever wore it in 😅
Which video is that? Lol
ThuJ4 yeah I remember watching it like 2 years ago? Idk i forgot how long ago
This was still one of the best fights and most amazing moments in one piece
I’m rewatching this part right now!
This fight really got to me, I was watching One Piece back to back when it was still in the Big Mom's arc about two years ago, it took me by surprise as I didn't know Merry's fate and Usopp really loved that ship since it was Kaya's gift
Tekking will always be one of the people who I always make time to watch

Imagine if Usopp had left the crew for good and started his own crew that actually rivaled Luffy
Usopp’s crew would be murdered almost instantly
Loui P Why and how? Its theoretical
The straw hat crew would have been offed by Perona, or Sugar.
Alfredo Sauce Im sure they would of came up with something
@@LastGREATEST0 Not really Oda put a lot of emphasis on the fact that Usopp has to do it, or they're done for. Sugar about to touch a clueless Luffy and Law, or Perona getting them all hopelessly depressed including Robin. All she has to do when they're all captured is just cycle her ghost through them continuously then off them. The way that Franky Sanji and Zoro all booked it when they saw that Usopp actually had a chance to fight Perona shows. I'm pretty sure that Oda made those two characters to show that Usopp is necessary for the adventure.
This episode was my first over exposure to one piece, I remember being little and seeing this episode air at 12 at night
this is even deeper for sanji since he had one family that he left, now another family is brakeing.
Possibly an awakening or strong observation would allow him to control his projection and body at the same time as long as he can see, so his opponents think he is an intangible God but he's miles away sniping them to dead
The ability to summon hollows would play right into usopps lie of having thousands of men as well as giving him lots of extra espionage options. Imagine how wano would go if usopp used a negative hollow on Kaido, hits him with a massive one and Kaido just be like . Man life sucks I'm gonna drink and kill myself... Oh wait no
When you get the notification 20 seconds late
I like what Zoro and Sanji after the fight. Zoro telling Luffy the burden of becoming a captain of a crew and Sanji stopping Chopper from healing Ussop so that his pride will not be broken. Love the dynamic of the monster trio.
"Give me 700 ninja-stars!"
"Would you like fries with that?"
"Absolutely."
Remember when luffy told katakuri that one should be prepared for anything in a pirate battle and there such thing as fair in a pirate battle

Usopp's Rotten Egg/Breath Dial/Gas/Flame Star combo was a stroke of genius. So many GOATED moments. Luffy was just too damn tanky, but Usopp out fought him every step of the way during that fight.

I've noticed a lot of Usopp's pop greens are basically his old stuff in plant form, which has me wondering why he doesn't have an explosive cactus, like even the shuriken came back as platanus shuriken, the cactus seems too obvious to not do it.

Thanks tekking...Merry end was not sad enough...you had to add that scene to my mind...thanks.
It was hard to choose a side I cried a lot when going merry was burning. Do one for sanji vs luffy at whole cake island.
Luffy did this when Jinbei volunteered to stay in Whole Cake and fight Big Mom. Luffy demanded that Jinbei return to him and not die.
@@IK-yb5rn Yeah but that one went away quickly. I wish there was another where Luffy has to really put his foot down against a crew member who disobeys him. That he really has to put in that ultimatum of obey or leave.
