I will admit that I was a little nervous about using colorshift paints, but Turbodork made the whole process extremely easy!
These paints require only 1:1 ratio of thinning for the airbrush and once that is achieved they lay flat and smooth with minimal effort!

I love how "4d glasses"(green to purple) looks on my Necron scarabs.
This video was top notch and convinced me to buy more from the line itself thanks for your “experiment”
Awe thanks my friend! I do the work so you don’t have to lol
Looks like you can base your model with black and white to get different color hues with a single coating!
My army of spoons will look great!
Great looking spoons will take over the world
Thank you! You made a fantastic video. I like this colors and I will buy them.
Thank you my friend! Don’t forget to use my promo code nsab10 to get 10% off! :)
FYI I used a matte coat and noticed nearly the same reaction if not a bit more severe as it appeared to diminish the coating. Until then they looked amazing... afterwards... still good but the “pop” I guess you could say was lost.
Such an excellent review. So so useful. Liking subscribing and checking the rest of ur videos. Stellar work!
Thank you my friend! I tried to be as fair and thorough as possible. Thank you for the like and most importantly the sub!!!
Oh my goodness, you are a lifesaver! I’ve been trying to find a informative review like this on for a month, I’m so glad I found your channel! I really like the way the paint color shifts but I haven’t found the right color I need... Have you ever tried mixing the paints together? If so, how did it turn out?
Thank you my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and my channel. I haven’t tried mixing them wet but I have layered them to get a different effect. TurboDork says not to mix them wet because it can cause the color to distort greatly causing an ill effect on the final product
@@NotSoAverageBuilder Ah I see! That's good to know, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thank you so much for your response!
Yes! I saw your Facebook post and have been waiting for this video!
Well I hoped that it lived up to your hopes! :)
A man of science
Lol I tried to give the most accurate and honest review I could lol
Those color shifting colors look good! Nice series of tests, my dude!
Thanks bro! They are amazing and totally worth it for future projects!
I think dark undercoat better than the other for metalic, thanx dude for your review
Oh I completely agree! They definitely looked way better with the dark undercoat, and you are very welcome my friend!
Have a question, what about with a brush and not a airbrush?
They are 100% hand brushable. On my noise marine I used a combination of air and hand brush techniques and it turnout out perfect! I’ll be doing more with turbo dork paints really soon
@@NotSoAverageBuilder Thank you for the reply, I'm just starting to get into 40k, so buying all my paints, and these seem perfect for making a metallic brown. But was worried id have to buy a airbrush for them
That’s awesome! Good to have you in the hobby my friend! They make a metallic brown it’s name is hilariously “death by” ha ha I have their two LVO exclusives that I have to review plus their newer line they released a few months back! So I have a ton of stuff to throw on my channel! I’ll do a full video on hand brushing their paints to help out!
Use alclad black base. The undercoat needs to be glossy not flat.
Actually, it just needs to be a black base.
Gloss can yield better results on some of them but not all of them.
Btw what psi are you using to shoot turbo dork?
Se7en I generally use around 15 to 20 psi
Allllll Da Spoooonnnnnssss!
Great review mate!
Two questions
1.Are they 100% water-based? saw some reviews mentioning they got a harsh smell to them
2.How would you say they compare with the solvent based metallic out there like Spazstix?
As far as I know they are water based, I had no harsh smell coming from the ones I had. There are a ton of metallic flakes in them so I’m sure that airbrushing with no mask could create a metallic taste in your mouth/nose but that’s about it.
Unfortunately I have not used any solvent based metallics (though I’m hoping to change that soon) so I’m not really sure.
I just tried a couple of their metallics on my B2 Super Battle Droids. They worked well and look better than typical metallics. That being said, they work much in an airbrush than on a brush. My question to you is, what would you recommend for the bronze like colour on a droideka?
If you’re wanting to stick with TurboDork paints then I would use their “Cartridge Family” color. It seems to be the closest to a bronze color.
When you hand brush them you need to apply in much thinner coats than other colors. I hand brushed their metallics on my Noise marine guitar in multiple places and the first couple of coats it looked spotty but after the 3rd or 4th thin coat it filled in really well and laid down really smooth!
Another thing I found is they work much better with a flow improver rather than a “thinner” I tried using both to test out hand brushing and the flow improver greatly improved the paint laying abilities.
@@NotSoAverageBuilder yeah I'll try it with a flow improver for sure. Though I will say on th B2s it gave them a scratched up worn metal look that actually turned out pretty awrsome
Oh that is pretty cool! If you’re on IG and posted pictures on there tag me in them so I can see! :)
@@NotSoAverageBuilder not on IG BUT my commission business page on facebook is call The Arm Cair General
very well done, thorough test.
you suggest they shouldn't be used on anything but black. well, yes, if you want the true intended effect that they give. but, that doesn't mean that they 'shouldn't' be tried on others. they still give different results, which can possibly turn out to be interesting. results unachievable any other way. NOT their intended results, no, but experimentation should always be tried, one never knows what they'll discover.
are they worth the money they charge? hell, no! these are over-priced. imo the vallejo color shifts are better, and they are cheaper. and, i've never had them clog up either. also have never needed numerous coats upon coats to achieve results.
Thank you my friend, that is a very true statement about the base coat it would create a different result on different parts using varying base coats.
As far as their pricing goes I have learned a lot since shooting this video and they are as follows:
Vallejo paints are 15ml bottles where as TD is in 17ml bottles so a little more value.
The older TD formulas were really thin and when I thinned them out in the video it caused me to have to have to add more coats with their new formula and thinned to 50/50 ratio I only have to do 2-3 coats.
Finally, I have used the Vallejo colorshift paints recently and the new TD paints have a broader range of shifting Over the Vallejo due to the larger amount of flakes in them. Which is also the reason why they can get clogged up (I have found though that once you unclog them once you never have to again)
I am in no way trying to sway you just putting out what I have seen to help people’s decisions:)
Try a zenithal coat some time, makes some of the turbo dorks super next level.
@@stubbyfoamz1 yeah the zen paints are fun. The Two Suns one is pretty neat
New to paints so black undercoat is the same as black primer? If there is such a thing as black primer.
Yes there are a ton of companies that make a black primer the big ones are Stynelrez by badger, Vallejo, and MIG one shot.
When undercoats are mentioned they can be just about anything honestly from primer to an actual paint layer (like what I did)
Hey man you gonna test some paint? yeah. you gonna do like one spoon for each? nah I'm a do 50 spoons. scientific method yo.
Hilariously enough I still get asked what these paints would look like over other base coats.. so even with my 50 spoon test it still wasn’t enough lol
1:24 min of non-information... then i clicked away.
Glad to see you go :)
@@NotSoAverageBuilder If that makes you feel good, then I'm happy to oblige. You might want to reflect for yourself, if basically begging for Patreon-Money is better in front of the content or after.
Oh it does. Lol unfortunately UA-cam doesn’t allow you to edit videos once they are up so it’s stuck that way. Telling me you didn’t like it is one thing. What you do next no one really has any wish to hear it
@@NotSoAverageBuilder Where did I tell you that I didn't like it? I just gave you the plain factual feedback, that I watched over a minute of non-information, then tuned out. If that hurt you in any way, sorry.
It was the “clicked away” part. It sounded as if because you got bored you clicked off the video.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I agree some of my older videos were filled with what seems like useless material. I have been trying to find my own unique way to make my videos more “mine” and I totally understand that there will be people that aren’t exactly crazy about the process and for that I am sorry.
