Ours was having trouble staying on after you started it. Now it's having trouble starting. I think I may need to do some of your tips above. Thanks, great video by the way!
I have this kind of mower, changed spark plug, air filter. But still won't start- after reading and watching trouble shooting articles, I think it may be the fuel filter. Do you have a video for that, for this type of LM?
Maybe this will help someone. Mine is model xtx650, 149cc Spark plug- Koehler # 14 132 11 Socket deep well 11/16 Plug gap 0.030 in. Oil capacity 20oz Oil type 30w warm climates, 10w-30 cool climates.
Thanks for the video. I just picked up the same make/model mower free from Facebook. What spark plug gap did you use? I've searched the internet and found a couple different recommendations. Thanks in advance and take care.
Wasn't that a square drain plug on the bottom of the mower? Was it really necessary to tip the mower over to change the oil? What if you still had gasoline in the gas tank?
Great question.. There isn't a lower drain plug on this mower, so tipping it is the only way to drain the oil. Also, there was no gas in the tank, and I should have stated that for safety reasons. Great feedback, thank you!
I've never seen a Kohler Engine of this type that didn't have an extended dipstick tube and there's even a cutout on The Recoil housing for it to fit in on your mower.
I have a Lawn Boy I purchased about 8 or 9 years ago. Have a small yard so never performed any maintenance on it. At the end of last mowing season it would take longer and longer to start with the electric start. Then the last time I tried it never did turn over. Was going to toss it for a new one but your video gives me hope. I can't do everything you did since I am disabled. But what would be the first thing I should try to fix it?
Well.. a new spark plug and an oil change will do wonders. But if you went that long without an oil change, and it's been sitting all winter, it may be done. But here's to hoping!
@@DadItYourselfDIY - Thanks, it's worth a try as it probably is fairly inexpensive to buy a spark plug. I'll have to watch your video again to see where to locate the spark plug and how to replace it. Never done that before in my life, as you probably can tell. :)
@@DadItYourselfDIY - Just went out to the garage to check it out and encountered a brand new issue. I pushed the mower to the center of the garage and discovered the right back wheel won't always turn and sticks. I hear a noise and then it moves again just to get stuck after a couple of rotations.
Had a rear right wheel come loose on my lawn boy. recovered all the parts but the nut for the bolt. All the "experts" tell me that I'll have to replace the bracket for the wheel. Even Lawn boy Just answer a simple question. any ideas?

@@DadItYourselfDIY I have a 1990s 2 stroke Lawnboy 3 speed. I lost all 3 gears. I spent many hours diagnosing and traced problem to 1) worn bushing at gearbox and 2) 1 of 2 key shifts were broken inside gearbox. Spent another several hours repairing. Could regular lube of driveshaft bushings have prevented? I don't know but it certainly made me want to prevent it from happening again!
So helpful! My neighbor just threw this away when they moving out! ready to use it for our lawn
No way! Tune it up and mow away! mine is seven years old now!
Thanks virtual dad, you're the best!
Thanks. Just used this mower this morning. Still going strong!
Love this mower,I use it daily
Mine is still going strong after 8 years!
@@DadItYourselfDIY amazing I had to put screws in the adjustments on the wheels they keep coming off, that's the only downside
Literally have never had that happen.

Thanks! Good luck!
Awesome. Thanks for the video. Glad to know this is super easy to do. Going to buy the parts and tackle this on mine
Very cool, glad I can help!
Great tips. Thanks for the ideas from a newbie here!
Take care of your tools an they will take care of you.
Good stuff. Very helpful 💪🏻
Thanks!
Nice work! I'm heading out to the garage to do mine!
Great video!
Thanks Paul!!

I do not. I'm sure one exists though.
Don't forget to use a torque wrench to properly torque the bolt holding the blade on. On my model its 60ft-lb.
Calibrated Elbow.. 😁🤣🤣
Still have our lawn boy from 1972. All original air filter and spark plug. Still runs like a top and to be honest I’m surprised
Great mower, just won't die!
Maybe this will help someone.
Mine is model xtx650, 149cc
Spark plug- Koehler # 14 132 11
Socket deep well 11/16
Plug gap 0.030 in.
Oil capacity 20oz
Oil type 30w warm climates, 10w-30 cool climates.
This is awesome info!
What size socket did you use for the spark plug?
I don't remember
Nice job on the tune-up and the video. I'm curious, have you ever done the fuel filter?
I have not, or the drive belt..
Thanks!
You are very welcome
thanks!
You're Welcome. Thanks for the support.
Is there a fuel filter? Where do I find it?
I'm not aware of one.
@@DadItYourselfDIY Thanks for the response. It's running rough and a friend suggested that it's probably time for a new fuel filter.
@gt-yh3ty Now I'm curious. I've never changed it if there is one. This mower is 10 years old now.

I honestly cannot remember. Is the owner's manual on the Lawn-Boy page? I cannot remember..
It's 0.030 inch
@nutmuffin-cz7xb Thank you!
The google link for motor currently is resources.kohler.com/power/kohler/enginesUS/pdf/14_590_26_EN.pdf
(I searched "lawn-boy xtx650 mower manual")
helpful but not for the replacements you are using... what spark plug are you useing and what air filter

Hi Have same mower, how much oil does it hold?
Less than a quart.
Wasn't that a square drain plug on the bottom of the mower? Was it really necessary to tip the mower over to change the oil? What if you still had gasoline in the gas tank?

Have you changed the belt on this mower yet?
I haven't. Spring is right around the corner, so a tune-up is scheduled.
I've never seen a Kohler Engine of this type that didn't have an extended dipstick tube and there's even a cutout on The Recoil housing for it to fit in on your mower.
It's about 7 years old now. Bought it brand new from Home Depot in 2014. Still going strong..
i came here to verify sizes of spark plug socket, socket size to remove blade....didnt get none of that
Noted. The spark plug is a standard size, and the nut on the blade is either 3/4 or 15/16

Oil/grease the hub. May need to remove it, clean it up and reinstall.

Email me a picture and the model number. I can be very creative! IG @dadityourselfdiy or dadityourselfdiy@gmail.com
Is there a torque value in inch pounds for the bolt that holds the blade?
There is. IF I recall it's 60 inch pounds.
@@DadItYourselfDIY thank you 🙏
40 to 45 foot pounds .
It’s 82NM or 60 foot LBS
Perfect!
How often should I time up my lawn boy.
I do a full tune up every spring.
there's no excuse to fill the gas on your lawn, when your neighbour's lawn is right next door
Bahahaha.. I actually like my neighbor!
Muy buen vídeo, si se pudiera dar más de un like se los daria. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

That poor transmission feels neglected.
Yeah? What could I have done? Or do? I'm sure I missed something!
@@DadItYourselfDIY What does the manual say? I would think lube?
The manual is long gone. I'm sure I could look it up online. This is probably a good time for a follow-up video!

I can only image. I've been using this mower for almost 10 years and haven't ever lubed those items!
