I remember when she first released this......it to k a couple listen to adjust to her voice but then it just clicked. The whole vibe of the song was smooth and kinda jazzy for me.
Heidi that's who, Yes! Everything you said, exactly. I still have this CD, I thought the same thing when I first heard it and then the lyrics made a connection with me, I got the same sense of jazz but her voice added a bit of funk. Fell in love with this song.

Macy Gray is brilliant with a beautiful voice. This single was a huge hit, as well as the album, I also think she won awards at the Grammy. The raspy voice is her signature, and it's been compared to Billie Holiday's voice. I also think Amy Winehouse sounded a bit like Macy.
I really didn’t like this when I first heard it. A few weeks later and I loved it and went and purchased the single ... takes a few listens but it’s a grower

Macy was a song writer first. She stood in for a lead singer once and they loved it. The uniqueness of her voice that you don't like is what made everyone else love her...including me. I have everything she ever put out.

I think it's called "vocal fry" that gravelly sound many singers (and non-singers) develop for various reasons... sometimes it comes naturally, like Chris Cornell, Layne Staley to name a couple... regardless, to each his own my friend... no one ever knows what they're gonna like or not like, or why... doesn't matter what others opinions are, you be you.
