Hi Rick, I would like to get a unit that would provide tracking information (via satellite) back to my family for when I fly small planes around the eastern U.S. I might use it occasionally for hiking or hunting also. I want to be able to get in touch with family members if ever needed, or to activate SOS services. Which unit would you recommend for me? Thanks!
As a private pilot myself, I would look at the Garmin inReach Mini 2 as it can pair with the Garmin Pilot App to easily send and receive text messages from the cockpit. Here's a link to Garmin's site for some additional information. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/765374. Look farther down the page for the GARMIN PILOT APP information.
Thanks for the thumbs up. Any inReach device can communicate with any other inReach. InReach devices can communicate with all other types of satellite communicators, however, you must initiate the message from an inReach device to something like SPOT or ACR Bivy Stick, then you can communicate back and forth for the next 24 hours. After that, the inReach user would again need to initiate the message with other non-inReach devices. I hope that helps and makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
When I activated my spot this month I was offered navigation as an option that I paid extra for
Thanks for bringing that up. I'll research it more to see exactly what features it offers.
Rick

My tenant looks exactly like you, also name Rick.
That's funny. I'm not sure that's a good thing.
