    I have used SPOT for years and Love the peace of mind it brings to me and my family. Now with SPOT X I can send custom text messages back home no matter where I go.

    If 5 mins is too long to wait for a message to be sent you can go into your settings and set the send receive interval for 2 1/2 mins but it will use up the battery quicker.

    I live in Northern Ontario and work in the bush. I use a Spot X and as far as the antenna goes when I am in a pickup I just put there Spot X lying on the dash and driving with nor problem or I have it in the machine that I am using and it still works. There has never been a problem as far as trees blocking the signal. Like I said I work as a logger. Cheers

    The Spot X DOES indeed let you know when your message was sent. Update your firmware if it doesn't because the current version does. You can check individual sent messages and see with an icon if it was sent for failed to send. You should amend or update this because its false information and pushing a lot of people away from buying this unit, when in fact it DOES have this feature. If you simply read the manual, you will see you can check for sent confirmation. Also the upload query icon on the top indicates when sent... Please provide people correct info, this is false and pushing people away from something that is a good product and almost convinced me not to buy one until I looked into it myself and got the owners manual.

      Thank you for watching and for the updated info. I was actually using the Spot X this weekend and noticed the icon for the first time. I will add an update in the description, unfortunately UA-cam won’t allow me to update the video. But I will look to see what options I have available for updating this information. Thank you again.

    I've had some conversations with SAR and they say the two way messaging capabilities of the newer devices is extremely valuable when planning a rescue. I think Garmin and spot have a some kinks to iron out in the speediness of the messages though.

      @MyLifeOutdoors  5 років тому +3

      Justin Outdoors I agree. When you think of what your message goes through to get to its recipient...up to a satellite, through GEOS, etc. etc. it’s amazing how fast it works.

    Fantastic review! The bulk of the con's you mention (slow and unreliable messaging, having to orient the antenna) I suspect are a result of Spot taking a dependency on the Globalstar Sattelite network. I've used sat phones on both Globalstar and Iridium and IMO the Globalstar network is complete garbage. The most telling way to demonstrate the exceedingly bad Globalstar network is to make a phone call between two Globalstar Sattelite phones. What you'll find is that it's almost impossible to have a conversation between two Globalstar Phone longer than a couple seconds because the sat coverage will regularly drop out at least one of the phone within seconds of connecting. And, that's it you can connect at all, most Globalstar to Globalstar phone calls never even connect.
    It's frankly disappointing that Spot takes such a significant dependency on a network that has over the years become a complete joke. Paying a premium like $.25/message for a system that is as slow and unreliable as you describe is IMO unacceptable. It definitely gives me pause when contemplating swapping out carrying an real satellite phone that uses a more reliable satellite network.
    The REAL plus for me on this device is the integrated keyboard, I'm also looking at the Garmin device. While those devices do NOT have a keyboard, they afaik are much more durable, AND most importantly use the Iridium satellite network (much more reliable).

      Thanks for that info between SPOT and Globalstar network. We have had the earlier Spot without messaging just the canned message. That seemed to work fine her in SE Alaska where one is out of service quickly. Also had an early Sat phone using Iridium Satellite. Looking at the InReach that many fishermen now use, so knowing how Globalstar is or not functioning is helpful.

    Dude your intro music is spot on in 2 out of 2 vids. I'm up in the middle of the night looking at my TO DO OFF ROAD PREP list for this coming spring and summer and I'm looking at Sat trackers to add to the quiver of safety and coms gadgetry . Dig your intro music, your presentation and the info you provide. You're easy to listen to, informative and cover things I find important. I was watching some Rocky Mtn ATV vids on the same subjects and they were nerve racking.... it felt as if they were more like commercials rather than actual testimonials by a real device user. So thank you for what you do, and keep it up!

    Thanks for your input. You have convinced me to stay with the older spot gen 2 I have used for years. I like the light telling me the messages was sent. I wish I could send out more messages more often that "I'm OK" but my wife and I have figured it out a method for my hikes. She knows I send one out at the beginning of my hike, about halfway and then at my destination on day hikes and then the same method on the hike back out.

      I do some very difficult hikes and I will share that the hardest part of every one is leaving my wife. She also worries but copes with it as best she can. She's been on the hikes and knows what I'm doing. My response to your comment and the comment on your comment from Mike is ...what happens if you can't send the message? Endless reasons why that might happen but what if. I would say THAT worry is far worse than coping. You not sending that message will mean something bad happened until they hear different which might be days. I understand the temptation but I think we all (especially me) need to work on our coping skills.
      Great to hear two guys loving their wives though. Thats always great.
      Cheers

    To the point, I motorcycle tour a lot and usually in areas where help is nowhere to be found. I will say this about the spot x, no one wants to be in long text conversations when out enjoying the world. We all know that when tech gets heavy in your hand, the enjoyment is gone and once your significant other has the ability to have long conversations, it will never end. I just want to enjoy getting away and the texting doesn’t do it for me. I know, there is a plan with a 20 text limit….. we all know what is going to happen with those 20 minute after your significant other knows it’s available. I’m good with the preset messages. If my wife is close to her due date, I’m thinking she will be my priority.

    What do you expect its satellite communication not cellular. The delay for the average cellular system is 30ms whereas satellite communication you are looking at about 300 to 500ms delay. Realistically you don't text back and forth. Also for me I have it mounted Ted in the 4wd so the antenna will always be pointed up.

    The reason text messages do not go through as fast as we like is "prioritization" done by the satellite (whichever happening to be over your head and picking up the text) itself. That satellite has a lot of things to do (very important things with very limited power and bandwidth) and the least important thing for that satellite is your "Hi, honey!". That is why your non-important text goes at the end of the line and is delivered when other important things are done! The SOS function on the other hand is designed to gain priority over every other function that satellite is doing and is sent to the closest SOS receiver in relation to signal source (You) immediately. Hope that helps and happy outdooring!

    Very useful. My wife is pressuring me to get a tracker, but I am a dedicated technophobe. This info is helpful and I have to agree on the battery thing. Far too much new tech is rechargeable only and I cannot trust it to do what it needs to do in a pinch. (Flashlights headlamps, GPS etc). No batteries, no buy.

    • @EdwardRaybould
      @EdwardRaybould 3 роки тому

      I believe that there are two reasons why devices such as this only use internal rechargeable batteries: there's no battery compartment where a seal can fail. The unit is sealed up tight at the factory and can maintain its IPX7 rating. The other reason might have to do with current draw from the battery. In other words, when these devices are transmitting to their respective satellite networks, more current is being drawn from the battery than alkalines can handle. Although my second reason is an educated guess, it is backed up by looking at two of Garmin's products. I have a Garmin 66st, a full-featured GPS receiver, but no Iridium capability. Garmin's 66i is the same thing but adds the InReach/Iridium capabilities. My 66st uses alkalines. The 66i only has the internal rechargeable battery. Both are IPX7 rated.

    I have used a SPOTX since July ‘18 after triggering a SAR response because I could not let my family and friends I was ok but going to be late by nearly 12 hours. The SPOTX has been a work in progress but after each firmware update has increased it reliability and function. It still is not a navigation device. The latest version has Bluetooth connectivity to work with a smartphone. Mine does not. I would buy one again.

      MyLifeOutdoors My daughter, an LEO knew I did not have my PLB, it was in a shop having the battery replaced. She gave me 12 hours then contacted the county I listed in the trip plan. I was late because the canyon trail I was on was severely damaged over winter, I lost the track a couple of times and ran out of daylight . I still had nearly 2k elevation and five miles of unknown trail at dark. I was on BP trip and had food water shelter and a good camp site. I just hunkered down for the night and hoped I could head off the SAR response. I left camp at 7, ran into SAR Deputy a mile from TH a 11; the trail up and out was as bad I imagined. The Deputy was able to head off the full on county response with horses; ORVs and the first foot squad was 20 minutes from him. Talking to them on the way out, they were all about the SPOTX.

Couldn't even get to the System Settings menu to get the authorization code to activate and get new firmware. Oh yeah, while I was on hold for support, I found there was a note in the box that a firmware update was required for the device to work right, but, couldn't do that because I couldn't even activate. Support said it was probably a software (firmware) issue and it probably was, but I really didn't want to risk paying for a year's service and wait for another. Sending back in the morning.

    I have a Spot X, I noticed that messaging takes a VERY LONG TIME. But, this coyld be the difference between life and death, as well as keeping in touch with the family during a disaster. I live in Texas, where disasters are commonplace. Being able to contact my wife when the grid goes down is important. This way we can find eachother! That's the whole reason I bought this. Emergencies and disaster preparedness. Even if we cannot use our cellphones, this is a backup that lasts 12 months.
    Edit: We paid the $421.47 (per device) for fully unlimited in the even of a disaster or emergency. Do the annual highest tier contract plan, cause it is cheaper. If you do anything else, it will kick you in the butt. Just be ready to throw them your money. Honestly, it's worth it to us. Honestly though, the price wasn't bad. We pay nearly that per month in cellular services alone.

I have bought a Spot Satellite Messenger before but I didn't like it but I have bought an Garmin Inreach Explorer and it's pretty nice and it's a two way communication device I like that one better. We have had a few Murders and other stuff going on so that's the reason I have bought one. good luck with your Baby I hope everything turns out okay.

    • @MyLifeOutdoors

      Yes it will work in the Atlantic Ocean but Spot's coverage is limited. (Check out their website for a map of their full coverage areas.) As I understand it SPOT contacts the closest search and rescue responders to your current location. Its hard to say who that would be. Possibly the US Coast Guard depending on where in the Atlantic you are.

    Excellent video! I appreciate your likes and dislikes. I've been using Spot (all generations) since 2008. I'm very interested to see how SPOTX matures. Question: what do you think of the keys on the keyboard? Last question: some generations of Spot were an IQ test, and a lot of people didn't score too well. Is SPOTX easier?

    • @MyLifeOutdoors
      @MyLifeOutdoors  5 років тому

      Thanks for watching! And great questions. I found the keyboard easy enough to use. Not quite like my iPhone...but no big issues.
      As far as how intuitive Spot X is...I’m not sure I’m a great judge. I think if you have used a SPOT before you will be able to find your way around a SPOT X no problem. If not...there might be a learning curve.

    After using for a few years, for me using Offshore fishing out to 60 miles, I am not happy with the device. Always very slow sending/receiving. Sometimes, might not send for about 10 minutes. Clear sky, no obstructions. Also, it will not work if any 5G is around when near or on shore. Connectivity in the app via bluetooth fails to stay connected for no good reason. I am going to cancel my subscription and go for the Garmin InReach Mini2.

    • @MyLifeOutdoors
      @MyLifeOutdoors  5 років тому

      lumywm I’m not sure if Garmin does. But I know there are other organizations offering similar services like GlobalRescue.com. Basically they are rescue insurance. Which, alternately, can be purchased on a trip by trip basis from a long list of insurance companies. I have not researched this but off the top of my head...trip by trip insurance may be cheaper and better. Spot and Garmin will call local SAR. And that is who you want looking for you anyway. People who are familiar with the area you are in...and don’t have to come a long way to get to you. Any trip insurance you buy will reimburse them up to the amount you are insured for. But like I said...I haven’t researched this...but I have purchased one time trip insurance with a million dollar extraction policy for a trip i took in a developing country.

    • @EdwardRaybould
      @EdwardRaybould 3 роки тому

      The Iridium satellites used by the Garmin devices do have whole planet coverage. The Spot devices use the Globalstar satellite constellation. It is my understanding that they cover everything except the extreme polar regions.
