  • In case you're wondering, it's "Four-By-Eee", you know, like four-by-four? Whatever you want to call, it'll give you around 25 miles of electric range and middling fuel economy after the battery has been depleted. Assuming you're the average American driver and you plug it in every day, the combination will consume less gasoline and extend your range, but as with all PHEVs, fail to plug it in and you might spend more on gas than just going with the base engine.

One thing to emphasize is that the top trims have a super nice and beautiful interior. The lower trims (of the regular GC/GC L at least) have rental car interiors. It’s kind of a night and day difference.

They make sense as commuter vehicles, but something this huge is not very logical for commuting unless you only have one vehicle that you need to do evergthing. Something like the Prius Prime makes a lot more sense as a PHEV.

Allow free markets to decide what consumers want. Government incentives always distort markets and transfer wealth for EVs from taxpayers to buyers (usually upper class who can actually afford EVs these days).

The drive train makes a lot of sense to me. Very economical & green for around town. No range anxiety for long trips, especially to wilderness. XRoad needs low-range torque: not huge HP # and the electric engines deliver that. It would be more choice, except I would never raise the hood to showoff the tiny I4 in the huge engine bay.

The 4Xe is a great option if you are in a warm or moderate climate. There are a lot of reported problems with the power plant in cold climates. I was going to buy a GC with the 4Xe until I started hearing about all of the problems, and beings that I am in Alaska I can not take the chance.
Also, a not for those that want to buy a 23 with a Hemi. Even though you can build them on the website, you can not order a GC with a V8 any more!! Only the Waganeer and trucks.

Even though this will probably be the most expensive engine option (or will the hurricane ever be an option in the GC(L)) I think the 4XE would be the one I would probably want. Hopefully, it makes its way to the GCL by the time I'm ready to buy. Also, every week the MSRP on the jeep build site goes up by several hundred dollars. Before long the X5 might become the value option when compared to the GC.

I drive all highway (73mph-77mph) in my wrangler 4xe. 44 miles round trip. I charge at home over night (Level 1 120V) I am very fortunate to have chargers at work (Level 2 240V) when I get off work I have a full battery.
Also since I'm plugged into 240v charger at work. I can schedule the AC to come on about 20 minuets or so before I get off work to come to a cooled interior. I still haven't burned any gas. That's a life saver here in Phoenix. I have driven about 4000 miles and burned no gas. I have been very diligent to stay in EV mode as much as possible, as to not pay for gas as long as possible. The last time I got gas. it was under $3.00 a gallon.

I'm a bit late to this plugin world, so I'd really appreciate it if anyone would educate me on this.
First, what does it mean with "electric only range" of 25 miles? With hybrid vehicles, isn't the electric range blended with the gasoline range to get overall mpg?
Or does it mean you choose to drive on electric mode on battery only for 25 miles? Once the battery runs out, you'll use gasoline.
For me, 25 miles range is nothing. It's my one way commute. That means the battery will be out by the time I reach my destination?
Second, related to first question, if you can choose to drive exclusively on electric only for 25 miles and then the battery runs out, I thought hybrid cars self charge during the drive?
Or is it only applicable with regular hybrid and it's different with plugin?
    I'm really confused
Wanting to get a version if hybrid, but should I get the regular or plugin hybrid?

I think the 2.0T needs to become the standard engine in the grand cherokee, but I'm gonna assume that will come with the new inline 6 3.0T, or maybe they're waiting until they can make the grand cherokee a standard 2.0T hybrid with an optional PHEV. I am going to take a shot in the dark and say the 3.0T phev will replace the trackhawk with a 500hp gas engine and a 135hp electric motor. But the 400hp version with a phev will probably my favorite 4xe.
Also the overland is honestly the best model. It gets you every offroad goodie from the trailhawk (except for the swaybar disconnect sadly) and all the luxury features of the summit, just not the luxury trim. It really is what makes the GC stand out compared to the competition. Now if you're on a budget then the trailhawk makes more sense, and a base model (V6) makes for an awesome compact and relatively cheap tow rig. This is why the grand cherokee is simply my favorite vehicle

Yeah, I'm looking at one of these specifically because of its ability to tow. Not a common feature in the crossover world. Not sure it would fit in these Grand Cherokees though, they tend to be a really long engine. Depends if they designed it with the new engine in mind or not. High output in the Srt ~510 hp and 500 ft/lbs
standard output with ~420 hp and 450ish ft/lbs. From a twin-turbo 3.0L inline 6. Seems like it will be an excellent replacement for the old but tried and true 5.7L V8. Jeeps says the high output is supposed to it a couple of MPGs more than the v8 (which v8 they don't say). But we will see. I do worry about the power vs. displacement, but it should be better than the complexities of the hybrid system., for which you only get 22-24mpg anyways with regular driving, so if the new engine can get 20ish mpg seems like a much better option. with Jeep/FCA/Stellantis (terrible name) you have to pick your poison in terms of questionable reliability, unfortunately.

It depends on the region as well, I don’t believe this is the case in most of the US because even with tax credits there’s often still a price premium comparing PHEVs to HEVs or conventional ICE vehicles. I’ve read that this is a problem in some European countries where PHEVs have been very heavily subsidized, the US subsidies have not been as generous/useful to many car buyers. I personally have religiously plugged in the 2 PHEVs I’ve owned and every PHEV owner I know personally charges their car regularly.
The exception to this would likely be areas with single occupant HOV lane access for PHEVs like CA, I’ve seen a few people in PHEV forums who say they never plug in and only bought the car for the HOV stickers.

@@MylesV since CA PHEV sales make up the majority of US sales (and a lot of people in CA buy them for HOV stickers and CA rebates as well as federal credits ), then this a big problem and the European study is very relevant for the USA.

So expensive and complicated to maintain and repair these plug in hybrid cars. Personally, I'd only get a full-electric or full gas car. If I had to get a hybrid, it'd be a toyota.

If you are gonna keep it forever a Toyota makes sense, but if you change cars every 3-4 years why not buy the Jeep, it'd still be under warranty.

Thanks for the thorough review, as usual! The $7500 tax credit seems to be the only reason to buy this over the ICE models. I would love to buy a GC but after seeing some glitches in the infotainment system in some reviews I am hesitant. I always loved the styling of the GC.

I don't see the value in this vehicle. Unless you have a very short commute it's really an indulgence. A member of my family bought the Rav4 plugin hybrid. In a year they've bought two tanks of gas...that's it. It gets over 40 miles on a charge. I'm amazed. EV's aren't there yet and these vehicles are ridiculous.

22.4 mpg in hybrid mode? So all that money you pay for the plug-in feature is strictly for city driving, and for that you would buy a vehicle whose mission in life is luxurious offroading? And of course this virtue-signaling toy for the rich will be tax-subsidized by the working stiffs. Got it.

It’d be interesting to see data on what percentage of Jeep drivers would actually plug the car in regularly, rather than just get in and go. Cool car, but if they’re not plugging in, then it’s just a waste of batteries.

I’ve seen lots of Wrangler 4Xe vehicles charging at stations around me recently. Looking at the fuel economy ratings there isn’t much of a point in buying the 4XE option unless the intention is to plug it in so I’m sure most owners will.
