My experience is the same. PHEV, the absolute BEST of both worlds!!!..Going on 5 yrs with my Niro. Given , a 75kwhr battery, 10,000 miles per year, PHEV 80% electric miles. A) Make 1 BEV converts 10000 miles from gas to electricity. B) Make 5 phev. (5x15kwhr) converts 40,000 miles from gas to electric

Out of curiosity, what was the range you got out of a full tank of gas? We're battling between the Sienna Hybrid and the Pacifica Hybrid at the moment.
Great explanation on the complicated way Stellantis treats the fuel economy stats. As an owner of a Rubicon 4xE, it feels like a lot of folks are having a difficult time understanding how these systems actually perform. I’m very similar to your use-case, and rarely add fuel anymore. In fact, since fuel does become stale after a while, and the system has to maintain that, I have only been keeping a quarter tank at max. I think it’s a fantastic platform with a few quirks. Thanks for the great breakdown on this one. 👍
I love the explanation of the real world execution of the PHEV system, so many people just didn't understand how the Volt worked and GM didn't market it well with a deep dive like this. 4/10 of a gallon of gas, when at the gas station for the "I thought it was an EV" commercial would've turned the company around.
I had the previous gen with the v6 and the new 4xe power is a very nice upgrade! Love the extra power. I don’t plug in a lot, but still worth it to me if you can buy at a good discount. Smiling ear to ear.
Electrical system reliability has been a serious problem with the prior gas engine models. It will be interesting to see what new flaws the 4xe models will suffer from.

Great video! Just ordered one earlier this month. This will be my 4th PHEV. Like you I fit the perfect segment for this technology. My commute is about 10 miles to the office. With my wrangler 4Xe I was able to go 2,700 miles on a single tank of gas. (Yet the trip computer said I got 51 mpg. My Pacifica does the same calculations, but we all know how to get the real number 😉) So for people like me 80% of my driving is like having an EV, but when I want to go on a road trip I don’t have to worry about my range. Hi Alex @AAutoBuyersGuide, thank you for helping demystify the MPG calculations. However, I'm still confused, as the GAS RANGE for a full 19 gallon tank is only 370 miles. That's what I don't understand about the whining of that range. This thing is 5000lbs+ and pretty large but does have enough EV range for a large portion of Americans.
@@hellkitty1014 imagine being able to go back and forth to work full EV and having a tank that last for a month or so, that's the goal. Now I drive a TDI that gives me 730km avg per tank so I can't complain. There's always going to be a crowd complaining about anything that no matter what. If it's electric they they'll say the battery materials carry loads of pollution during extraction, if it's PHEV then they'll say it doesn't make sense and you'll have to carry dead weight when using the ice. And whatever they can come up with.
Thanks! Great video with lots of intelligent detail compared to others. I have to watch it numerous times to get it all in. So in electric only mode the engine will kick in for extreme use. How about the other way around? Is there electric assist in e-save mode if you're punching it for passing, for example? I haven't heard anything about this circumstance.
When it comes to the engines supposed to be behaving similar to the non hybrid counterparts, the GC never has had the 2.0T as an engine on its own, but the Wrangler does. That makes the gas only to PHEV conversion a little less different. The GC is used to either the very high revving V6 or the monsters that are the HEMI V8's. But the 4xE is very obviously being set up to transfer to the 3.0T when it comes out, as it will replace the Hemi's and the V6 and will be much more hybrid friendly than a big cast iron V8. Also it will allow them to scale up the 4xE to the 3 row and the wagoneers
I don't think so I think the 3.0T will only replace the V8 and will probably have a low take number. They are both pretty overkill for the GC, the 3.0T with the boost of the hybrid would have absolutely ridiculous levels of power. you don't really need an 800 hp GC
@@jeffk464 Stellantis has publicly said the 3.0T is completely replacing all the V8's (excluding the ram 2500 and up). The 4xE high output variant will likely be the new trackhawk. 500hp i6 and 200hp electric motor you do the math.
Cutting down on smoking as opposed to quitting actually provides little to no improvement in health outcomes! But I get your point with gasoline consumption. Great video as always!
In this case that like comparing apples to oranges. Do you know where your electric cones from, or of you have solar, where the materials come from, how they are mined in Africa and mined and the material for the batteries. In reality a battery vehicle does not lower carbon footprint vs gasoline. But I do like this jeep
What was the octane rating of the fuel that was used during the performance test? Jeep claims that this engine can see a benefit from a higher octane fuel.
Hi Alex, thanks for the video. If I understand correctly, the JGC 4xe is not a traditional hybrid vehicle. My question is this: is there a drive mode that blends gas/electric to further optimize the MPG beyond the 23mpg? I think of it in terms of a Toyota Highlander that achieves 35mpg.
It was down to this Jeep or a Toyota Grand Highlander for me, we chose the Highlander, but I think the Jeep is also a solid choice. I didn't want to plug anything in, so I chose Toyota.
It makes sense that the cost of travel includes MPG and the cost of the electricity. However, like you said, the REGENERATIVE energy Produced during operation should be considered free. But the computer can’t differentiate between plug-in energy ($$$), and the regenerative energy (free).
I would like to know if theirs a noise when you step and release the accelerator pedal,i have a hybrid pacifica 2022 and it does, intereted in the cherokee hoping it doesn’t
I had Honda clarity plug in hybrid, it was kind of similar to this one when it comes to the hybrid system. It was very smooth on EV mode, however the 4 cylinder engine was noisy and unrefined! It produced loud noise and vibration felt in the cabin! I could not drive comfortably on hybrid mode since the gas engine was unrefined! Is it the same situation here? Do you feel the gas engine when it kicks in? Is it refined and quiet? Do you feel like you just want to turn it off and flip back to EV to get rid of the noise and vibration?
2:30, calling Stellantis and “American manufacturer” might be a stretch. They are from Amsterdam. Before that it was Fiat for a number of years, Italian. Daimler before that, German. So it’s hasn’t been an American company in a very long time. I supposed this is assembled here in the US, but so are many cars. 🤷🏼♂️
At 24 minutes in you make the most meaningful statement that the Jeep has more off-road ability and that the on-road is not as good. I never intend to go off-road and therefore this is not the best choice for me and most of the buying public.
Will the gas motor recharge the battery pack while in use? How is a 26 mile electric rage even close to efficient compared to the much more reliable gas motor. The tech is NOT even close to comparable yet. Definitely not worth the huge price of the vehicle. Maybe in the future. Not now.
Sorry to comment on a one year old video--but how does this only fit four 24" roller bags when the Toyota Rav4, which has the same stated rear cargo volume, can fit 6 without messing around with "underfloor" storage? It's just wild to me that a vehicle as "big" as the Grand Cherokee can only fit 4 medium roller bags like that. Is it because just one or two extra inches in one direction or another would make all the difference toward packing in 1-2 more bags? If you see this, I'd love a response!
Always enjoy your videos, Alex. Curious, you said the 4xe is quieter than the gas-powered versions, but the V8 WL74 you tested showed it was quieter. Driving both, which version do you think was quieter for normal driving?
No locking rear diff, no torque converter, but with air suspension to raise the vehicle and low-range. Odd combination for an off-road capable vehicle.
Great video as usual Alex but my main concern about this or any Jeep is reliability. I have owned Toyotas, Hondas, VWs, Audis and even a Ford. Toyotas and Hondas are the best. VW and Audi are decent. Ford, meh. My impression based on conversations with Jeep owners and from what I read is that they have a terrible track record. I know they they are great off road but, let's face it, unless that all you want to do, it's hard to justify. I would love to be proven wrong or to hear your (or other's) thoughts on reliability issue.
Great choice of vehicle to review in depth! Could mention the Range Rover Sport PHEV with 38 kWh battery and CCS fast charging support, with higher price of course. Please review the Wagoneer 4xe and RAM Revolution EV truck (with range extender option) as they are unveiled in more depth.
No Tachometer? It’s frustrating that all these early reviews show a tachometer and then FCA people decided to remove it. Any idea if they will bring it back?
The difference between the Jeep and the BMW is reliability and cost of services after the Warranty expires. One German Vehicle, Audi, is one too many! You mentioned the decibel rating is 70 at 50 mph? Mine is 54.4 at 55 mph, why the big difference? Only my idiot neighbor would take a Grand Cherokee off-roading as he did his 2021 Overland, it fell 25 feet and destroyed the body. I am surprised he can get insurance, but he got smart and bought a Wrangler for that kind of driving route.
My local Jeep dealer is selling these new for $32k because nobody wants them. Reviewers might like them, but real people don't. The dealer has 20 at that price. $30k off. I'd rather have the Limited X v6 AWD for another $2k.
Thanks Alex for this detailed video. Mitigating fossil fuel usage is good for all. While full EVs are great, they are not for all of us. My home doesn't have the infrastructure to charge an EV. I'd have to change my panel and run a dedicated line outside. The EV would live outside 100% of the time. I'm pretty sure our next vehicle will be a PHEV.

Do you know if there’s any difference between this and the 2022 model? Looking to buy one of those.
i saw thumbnail but dint notice the side mass, so i thoght i was looking at a roof down large suv like cabriole
Excellent analysis and review 👍
Great review. Was the part 2 deep dive ever posted?
Hi Alex, thanks for the video. If I understand correctly, the JGC 4xe is not a traditional hybrid vehicle. My question is this: is there a drive mode that blends gas/electric to further optimize the MPG beyond the 23mpg? I think of it in terms of a Toyota Highlander that achieves 35mpg.
Is the moving map display on the instrument cluster google maps?
Try to tow upto "6000lbs" with a 2.0L I4 Turbo when the battery runs out after every 26 miles! 😂
I would love to see the new 3.0L Hurricane engine put in the 4xe~
It was down to this Jeep or a Toyota Grand Highlander for me, we chose the Highlander, but I think the Jeep is also a solid choice. I didn't want to plug anything in, so I chose Toyota.
It makes sense that the cost of travel includes MPG and the cost of the electricity.
However, like you said, the REGENERATIVE energy Produced during operation should be considered free.
But the computer can’t differentiate between plug-in energy ($$$), and the regenerative energy (free).
Base model 4XE does not come equipped with the tow pack and if you add the hitch aftermarket, the rating is 3500
Great video
I tow a 3200# trailer often 300 miles /day. Is there anything I need to be aware of that wasn’t covered here?
Sloping up tallest in back is basic best air-o profile not to mention roll over toooooo, dah!
2 panes mini split r the only way to go when hybrid trying to best use resources of planet.
Not now.
Excellent review!
I believe that Toyota counts the battery use as free, with the plug in, and also inflates it’s mpg.
Always enjoy your videos, Alex. Curious, you said the 4xe is quieter than the gas-powered versions, but the V8 WL74 you tested showed it was quieter. Driving both, which version do you think was quieter for normal driving?
Another great, detailed, quality review. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Mexico.
Is there a Grand Cherokee regular hybrid?
Great video 👍
Alex do you have a spreadsheet or way to access all your vehicle spec data?
What is the real world MPG in hybrid mode with a full battery? Is it still 24 MPG?
Can't wait to see what they do with the redesigned Cherokee for 2025. I know it will be bigger and come with the 4XE but that's about all I know.
My first hybrid plug-in SUV! Nice job Alex.
Which recent AutoBuyersGuide gives details on 4Xe? What time mark? Titles & descriptions in AutoBuyers don't help. Thanks
Do they have an inverter built in?
Great choice of vehicle to review in depth! Could mention the Range Rover Sport PHEV with 38 kWh battery and CCS fast charging support, with higher price of course. Please review the Wagoneer 4xe and RAM Revolution EV truck (with range extender option) as they are unveiled in more depth.
No Tachometer? It’s frustrating that all these early reviews show a tachometer and then FCA people decided to remove it. Any idea if they will bring it back?
Paddle shifting in sport mode brings it up
The difference between the Jeep and the BMW is reliability and cost of services after the Warranty expires.
MPG when charging with the e-save mode??
When explaining how much leg room and head room you have, it would be very useful to let your viewers know your height.
It's a Grand Cherokee, but I'm still surprised combined MPG is only 24.
No garbage hybrid for me , I want the hemi 5.7 litre v8 tried and true
Central diff esp hybrid also!!!! helps big time off road, duh!
