    I refinished this vintage homemade dresser that my neighbor gave me to give it a modern painted and stained makeover. I ran into a few refinishing problems but I hope it helps others learn from my mistakes.

      That is different in different areas! You need to check waste disposal in your area.

      I would like to see this too as usually there are only a few times throughput the year to dispose of the waste. How can the rags and stripper waste be safely stored so as not to be a fire hazard.

    Great Toasty teamwork It was definitely worth stripping and staining the bottom, it looks a million dollars. The actual paint stripping with the tape looked so satisfying, shame the tape didn't work though.

    Lots of good tips in this one Shab. So moral of the story is to get all your showing wood done then tape it off, then paint. This is exactly what would have happen for me, in fact I would be sure to splash the stain on the paint. You don't read comments usually but is that top mahogany? Somebody did a great job building that, now it looks like you bought it from some high end place.
    Also hard to believe you got such a good level poly coating with a sponge, I mean Toasty. Sorry Toasty.
    No lewd or crude remarks from me today, just hope your other stripping gig is going good.

    Gorgeous restoration! The base was worth redoing in the wood stain! (Easy for me to say, ha ha). I was surprised you’d use a polyurethane over white paint. I’d be concerned it would yellow but it must have been water based poly?

    I like the way that base matched up with the top. There's another furniture flipper on here a woman who makes a lot of bases to modern up a piece. It is pretty easy to do and looks great. I wish I could remember which channel it was so you could check it out.
    Did you show the neighbor how the piece turned out?

    • @ThatShabbyGuy
      @ThatShabbyGuy  2 роки тому

      I think you're referring to DIY Wife.

      @@ThatShabbyGuy yes I do believe that's the one those legs really help a lot of dated pieces.
      Yeah the dad had made the dresser I wonder if she ever saw what you did with it and maybe wanted to buy it after it's transformation.
      Good to see you're doing well you have one of the best channels on here. You are very clear about your processes and why you do them. And without crappy music blasting in the background.

    • @ThatShabbyGuy
      @ThatShabbyGuy  2 роки тому

      I tried contacting her after it was done and never heard back from her. :( When he passed away the remaining siblings sold the house to an investor and haven't heard from them sense. This chest now sits in a very nice home in downtown Dallas, Tx and I passed the history of the piece on to the new owner. She was very appreciative of the work put into it and its backstory. So maybe it will continue as it is passed on. :) Good to hear from you again. Thanks for checking in!

    • @AlexBabcock-hw9iz
      @AlexBabcock-hw9iz 2 роки тому

      @@ThatShabbyGuy very cool I've gotten furniture that has had typewritten or hand-written stories of the piece on an underside or back out of the way place before.
      When you think about it furniture especially really old furniture has seen so many people pass by been a part of lives ect. It's kind of fun imagining who may have owned it where it was all those kind of things.
      So many items outlast us and have had previous owners.
