    I hate du-rags to so I invested in loc socks. I must say it made things 10xs better then a wave cap, du-rag, t-shirt wrap, etc... I have satin pillow cases so I rarely sleep with anything on my head now and my locs are still in great shape. Nice video brutha!!!!

    What's going on family? Thank yo all so much for liking and watching and following my journey. It's been 4 months since I've made this video and I want you to know that I've listened to a lot of your comments and concerns. I've come to conclude that most of you are right in your view and opinions, especially when it comes to what can cause lock breakage. I've conducted my own experiment with sleeping with my head wrapped since this video and I'm led to believe that it wasn't the cause of my breakage. I believe it was that I would go long periods of time without moisturizing causing my hair to dry out, which creates an environment for breakage. Not worrying about wrapping my hair is actually freeing! So thank you all!
    Thank you all for your love and support!!!!!!!

    Great video Ced!! You made some excellent points as well. I definitely agree with the fourth one, NEVER compare your locs with someone else's. You wanted Jirods and I came in the game wanting my hair to look just like Keisha Charmaines and Cordell Black. Your locs, your journey!

    Not wearing a do rag is not breaking your locks off...too much twisting and products are breaking them off...just wash and go for a while

      I can attest that not wearing a doo rag or some other type of hair wrap at night does indeed contribute to thinning and breakage. Like Cedric, I do NOT like wearing anything on my head at night. It's uncomfortable and often gives me a headache even though it's not tied tight. I never have a problem with my locks thinning until I go a few weeks without wearing my satin bonnet at night.

      Was looking to see if somebody said this. I dont sleep with nothing on my dreads too and theyre not thinning out or anything i also dont retwist for long periods of time like 4/5 months at a time and theyre still strong i agree too much retwisting and head fiddling causes breakage

    It's funny all these tips you've given applies to lose natural hair as well. I am very active in the natural hair community, and this alone has made me very knowledgable about caring for my locks - along with watching others who are fully locked who share their own experience. I appreciate this video, respect!

    Yo I love this!
    I've been thinking about starting locs for a few months now, and I wanna do my research before I get started. i've noticed there are majority ladies speaking up about their natural hair. I really like your enthusiasm to share your hair journey. More men should be involved in the natural movement. Not just by affirming black women in their beauty without weaves , black men need to be a part of the discussion because so many of your are natural. Thanks for this

    I think everyone has learned the hard way some how with their locks lol..that's the beauty of the journey, you always can imagine a outcome of your locks and most of the time it ends up being something you never could have imagined and actually love it! I'm getting my hair maintained the end of this month (November) so expect a before and after vid possibly another vid just for a little update.

    OMG, this is me! I stopped wearing my satin cap like 6/7 months in and I definitely noticed breakage around my edges especially and I feel like some around the back edges have thinned between the loc and the new growth. So now I found cap and I recently started wearing it again. And I don't even know how long its been since I retwisted my hair. I know it was last year though :x So I'm about to do that now and try to get on a twisting routine.
    And I was here crying that my locs weren't coming out how I wanted them so and all I had to do was take care of them like I should have been the whole time!! smh!
    One mistake that I made was I split two of my locs in half (making 4) when I hadn't when I hadn't watched my locs. Not only did that result in two of the locs being shorter in length, by the time I went and washed my hair I realized that the locs weren't as dense as I thought they were and I probably shouldn't have cut them in the first place. So now I'm going to be joining them back together, sigh.
    Great vid, your locs look fantastic!

    I did the same thing . I went a year without retwist. Also I did the same no no with wearing hair ties. paid for it with breakage.
    now I make sure to retwist every six weeks or so, hot oil treatments and wrap my hair at night .

    How long should I keep a ponytail in? And is it good to sleep with it at night sometimes?

    • @runnercedric
      @runnercedric  9 років тому +1

      Hmmm. I know that the type of band you use can damage hair if it's extremely constricting. If you've been wearing a ponytail all day, it's probably better if you let your hair rest at night if possible. But people also get styles and will keep them in for days so you kind of have to gauge based on your hair type.

    I had locks for ten years and was forced to cut them because no matter how many times i washed them build up showed and it looked dirty and unprofessional. In an attempt to save them i thought about bleaching but that would have been unprofessional as well. In the end i cut them and advice i have to all is watch the products you use when maitenencing ur dreadlocks, alot of people will not use the best products on your head because it more money out their pocket. Only use natural products and try to let the same person maitenence your locks over time. Product build up attracts dirt and if your not washing your locks weekly it can and will destroy their appearance. With that aside i
    did alot of things right with my dreads and got compliments all the time. Any questions i am here for yall. I been through it all and have alot of advice on producing healthy dreads!

      +NYC Kali acv every month is not good. That should be done once or twice at most a YEAR. it will strip your hair of everything and cause it do break by doing it too frequently.

  • @malekai14jg
    @malekai14jg 9 років тому

    If you have build up, you need to do a deep clean retwist. which can be done a couple different ways. I personally like a honey retwist, with a rinse with lemon juice and baking soda. this takes the build up away, freeing the dreads from any stiffness or mildew smell you might have. I don't wear a Du-Rag anymore, they usually fall off, but i bought a hair sock which works perfectly if you tie it up. #DredOut

  • @MDSoldier1
    @MDSoldier1 9 років тому

    i also connect dreads together to get thicker dread... but im really appreciative of you pointing out what happens when i don't use a du rag. i too get really lazy at times and just don't wear it. which now i know why i was losing dreads. i also didn't know the time period on when to re twist. I was twisting more like every three days lol. i do my own so once i see a problem im back at twisting. thanks for the video i seriously appreciate you sir.

    I went almost 5 months without getting a retwist and it caused MAJOR breakage. I get em done every 6 to 8 weeks now but I'm still recovering. Some times I'll do it monthly cause my scalp be disappearing lol...sleeping without a satin cap will also cause me to tug on my hair in the middle of the night and makes it super dry which also caused breakage. Hair is still in recovery mode lol

    • @runnercedric
      @runnercedric  9 років тому

      Ebonie007 Praying it recovers well. I'm blessed to have a really thick head of hair. But going a long time without retwisting has resulted in more problems with my locs in the past. So i feel you on that one.

    I know different strokes for different folks for sure....for example...
    1. I don't sleep with anything on my Locs (because I just can't), and I've been loced for over 5 years with no issues. When I sleep I'm aware of where my locs are (if that makes sense). My locs are entering mid length and I have about 360 locs. If my locs are in the way I get up and tie them loosely on the top of my head. My locs are never wild and scattered all over I would never get rest! When I toss and turn I carefully move my locs with me in my sleep! Lol

    Twisting the hair actually does more damage long -term that not twisting. I don't twist or wrap my hair at night (two years). Perhaps the wrong product, over twisting and not washing the hair often was the reason for your breakage.

      Hey AlysseStewartOnAir Thanks for the input. I haven't been sleeping with it wrapped much this year in efforts to be more hands off with my locs. My thing was that I have some seriously thin locs that were getting swallowed by some of the bigger ones around it. Thanks again for your input. Good thing to mention.

    how do you deal with itching? sometimes my scalp gets really itchy. I'm 9 months in and hair gets itchy- i do wash it and oil my hair. just don't know why it itches.

    • @runnercedric
      @runnercedric  10 років тому

      In all honesty bro, I'm no specialist. I've always found hair questions like the check engine light in the dash. It could something as simple as not tightening the gas cap or as bad as needing a new engine.
      Dry scalp can be caused by something as small as temperature change or as big as psoriasis (skin disease).
      But it basically derives from an imbalance in moisture at the scalp level.
      I'd seek medical attention if it's something persistent.
      Hope this helps :) *****

      All depends on what u using maybe the stuff your using could be causing it may not feel like it but the main reason it itches because your scalp is dry and can't breath. What oil and shampoo do u use and do u confit ok your hair? I used to be the same way but now my hair never really itches. Also depends where u live if u live somewhere and it's cold around this time your hair gets dry a lot also

      thanks bro!! thats what I think is the issue if I go a while without any moisture my hair becomes itchy. I don't always have it but i did have it a while back. As far as conditioner at the moment i don't use any- have any suggestions? I get like a spray bottle and add water along with oil that seems to help with dryness. Jerell Johnson

      I use design essentials product line works really great it's a 2shampoos one is called oat protein cleansing shampoo it removes all the buildup sweat oil and products in your hair then the second I use with it by them is called moisture retention it adds moisture to your hair because that first on strips everything so it will have your hair dry then the conditioner is called stimulations works really good stimulates your scalp and the stuff actually makes your hair grow

      Make some flax seed gel. Just UA-cam it. I did my sons it holds extremely well, and its natural so if your hair touches your face it won't cause breakouts.

    • @runnercedric
      @runnercedric  8 років тому

      Fantastic that you're joining the community! I don't think a person has to be extremely knowledge to start your locs as long as they're not doing some out of the norm or tool method. However, it could take an untrained person a little more time to part evenly throughout the head. But if the person has done box braids or two strand twist styles with loose hair, the method is almost the same. I would continue Youtubing. Maybe even have the family member watch a few videos to have an idea. Other than that. Keep them clean. Protect them when you sleep (suggested but not all people do it), and be conscious of drying them if you get them wet.
      Much love! #blessing

    Durags having nothing to do with it.... Sure ok tie your hair down, wrap it up wateva, but "Breakage" is usually from bad products OR not giving your hair Proper nutrition OR even getting your hair overly twisted same difference I "guess" but for thoses who Free form don't twist at all so going long periods of time without twisting doesnt hurt your hair u just won't be able to see your parts that's about it but most most most importantly for locs is keeping them clean KEEP it oiled for that Ummmm its pretty much your choice from there my hair is different from yours so it responds different to certain oils ect... Or maybe even no oil at all blk folks our hair produces its oil own oil so yea there u have it

    • @Jmoney5219
      @Jmoney5219 10 років тому +1

      Going long periods without getting them done can hurt them if u don't take care doing that time because they try to grow together and if u don't keep them from growing together and have to pull them apart all the time it can weaken the base of your locs.

    • @runnercedric
      @runnercedric  10 років тому +1

      Brian Jackson I completely agree with the thing you've mentioned as well. Thank you for bringing up a good point. If you're a freeformer, I would imagine the stuff that I worry about, may not pertain. I don't think I would worry much about wrapping my hair if I freeformed or ponytails. Our hair does produces oil naturally, but so does everyone else's. Some people's scalp is dryer than others and I believe people really have to discover their moisturizing needs for themselves.
      Thanks again for the feedback. I'm sure it will benefit other!

    If a stylist tell you to use black gel or any commercial brand gel on your locs,run like u see a ghost because 9 times of 10 it is extremely toxic and can damage your hair. You can re-twist with any of the followings #1.non concentrate coconut water #2. 1/2 Rosewater + 1/2 soy free Vitamin E oil #3.Distilled/Filtered water #4.okra slime #5.pure aloe mixed w/ raw honey #6.Beef protein gelatin mixed w/distilled or filtered water #7.Kokokum butter mixed with shea butter or your choice #8.raw shea butter #9. pure beeswax mixed with butter #10.cactus gel.For Shea butter and beeswax definitely use in moderation

    My hair is about 4 inches long and i use a sponge everyday and I get pretty good results but it doesn't matter how twisted my hair is when I wash my hair i lose all my twists. Should I use the sponge everyday for like 2 weeks without washing my hair until they lock?

      AE23 if you're trying to lock, why don't you just get your hair coiled? My hair is between 4-6 inches and in between retwist I do the rubber band method when I wash my hair so my roots don't come unravel. There are videos on how to do that.
