The MBP16 has got mobile graphics (M) while the XPS-line has got full-sized Nvidia GPU's, that's what's causing the weight difference. Totally worth it for better graphical performance.

XPS has got better hardware(except speakers) and upgradability but it's mostly Windows vs Mac OS preference at this point.

Y'all aren't appreciating just how awesome it is to see someone like Alex meticulously dissect products.
The normal reviews are great but sometimes it's the little things that people wanna know about. Like he just says everything that no one else says in the product previews. A lot of reviews just treat the product as a showcase and forget that some people are forking up good cash for this stuff, we're gonna be living with it, we appreciate details.

I'm glad Dell realizes that the camera industry hasn't shown any signs of moving away from the SD standard and still includes the card reader.
Sd cards apear to be here to stay. They are reliable, and are just advancing, and keeping up with other forms of protsble storage.

The Satan I have personally experienced the mbp 16 sound and it’s really of exceptional quality. But I am using the Dell XP’s L502x model having jbl speakers and it sounds really good

I've used my XPS 15 for about 2 years now and the trackpad has never been an issue for me working in Premier pro, in fact it's larger than many windows laptops to begin with

I bought one i9 9570 for a user, the fan never shuts up once it gets going. Selecting quiet from Dell Power Manager barely drops the fans rpms.

I like this style of video, it reminds me of old UA-cam where people would sit down with a product and a camera and wing it, unboxing style. More laid back and I like it.
Hopefully these aren’t plagued with coil whine and other issues like the past xps devices.
insainllama Yeah like driver issues, dock niggles, not turning back on if you let it go to sleep, screen lag and res/sizing issues when the built in display is 4K and you’re using 1440 ext monitors.

@@Top_Dawg360 There are nox X570 Mobos with Thunderbolt 3. Also intel gave the Thunderbolt spec to USB-IF for USB4 and by the time the next XPS comes out they probably can just use USB4

Same. A lot of the options on the market this year are going to be a "No" for me just because of Intel. The Lenovo Yoga line-up is rumored to feature a R9 version, let's see what they have to offer.

I've been an XPS fan for several years. I had one in 2010 that a buddy made into a Hackintosh for me. I kept that computer for over 4 years till someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse to let it go. Good to see Dell keeping these models going. (:

Please review more average laptops, like Lenovo Yoga stuff and especially ThinkPads, as well as like ASUS and Acer stuff. Lenovo makes great laptops, ThinkPads are awesome and really compete with MacBooks, but I feel like I only ever see XPS and Surface reviews (other than gaming laptops).
I agree whole-heartedly. Lenovos also seem more valuable because of possible lower price.

A 17" machine with no USB-A ports. I'm not crazy about that. I love my 9570. It has everything I wanted in a laptop. USB-A and a Ryzen 9 with DECENT speakers, and I would be looking at an upgrade.
No ethernet as well. I would have expected at least one type A so you don't need a dongle for a mouse or a USB stick. Very weird design for a 17".
Also got the 9570, absolutely love it. It's expensive but well... The only thing is the cooling, mine sticks under full load (i7 model) at 1,8ghz, that's a bit low...
Would definitely upgrade if we get the Ryzen cpus
@@Becky5205, because the bottom panel is aluminium, a cooling pad works great. I bought one for like 10 USD.
@Antonio Zamudio The downsides with Bluetooth mice are they tend to have higher latency and most lose macro button functionality. One of my Logitech mice allows you to switch between dongle and Bluetooth, the difference is noticeable.
@@Becky5205 Repaste and undervolt, mine is also i7, and is able to sustain about 2,9 Ghz (and limiting factor is power budget, not cooling).
5:25 I was literally thinking "It makes that one look old".. I think that's about the best way to describe it. The old one doesn't look bad, but side by side, eh.
I just want to share my experience - just over 6 weeks in - of the XPS 15 9500. We bought 4 top-spec versions of these, at a total cost of almost £10k, for our business partners. They look and feel great, at first... but the aluminium is very thin (nothing like a Macbook) and dents incredibly easily. There are SO MANY calibration issues with them. Thermal regulation is a joke; you need to completely shut them down before putting them in a bag, or they overheat to a dangerous degree. The trackpad and keyboard randomly glitch, and the process management is shot - we each have to restart at least once or twice a day, just to get the computer functioning again. The list goes on. They feel very much like pre-release prototypes, rather than high-end or even market-ready machines. Having switched from a 7-year old Macbook Pro with Windows 10 running on Bootcamp, which was otherwise flawless but no longer powerful enough, I'm severely disappointed and frustrated with my experience of Dell. Apparently we are far from alone in these issues - many of which apparently even existed with previous models and were never resolved with drivers / BIOS updates.

@Iqbal Muhammad haha, no. Just got one and it’s absolutely abysmal how many issues there are in the hardware and software both. Only had it for a few days and I already feel like I need to get it replaced.
There is no problem on mine. I think windows are updating on your computers. I normally update everything at first. It will take sometimes to update everything.

These machines are the business tools of four partners in a business, which has caused a significant negative impact. When buying 'top of the line' computers, for large sums of money, you should not receive a prototype.

That would actually be really cool. I'd want the trackpad to be a little bigger first, but I think I used to have a 3x4 Wacom fun like 10 years ago, and it really isn't that far off.

My sister is looking for a new laptop. I told her to get a XPS 15. Now I’m making a different decision to get her a different laptop just because there are no USB-A ports
@@ORIOLESFan02 You can still get the last-gen XPS 15 from Dell. There really isn't anything better out there. I preordered the XPS 15 in 2015 which is when they had the last redesign to the one they are using now and have been using it for 4.5 years. I got a three-year warranty, which was the max at the time, and extended it by two years. I had to use the warranty at the start because I was an early adaptor, but after the first year I haven't needed to, it was just for peace of mind. If Intel didn't kill Skylake with all the security patches I probably wouldn't be looking to update this laptop until it died, and it doesn't look like it will for at least 2 or 3 more years, easy. Dell is offering 0% interest financing for 18 months and $450 off the last-gen model right now, so my advice is go for it before they sell out. I just bought my father the top of the line i7 they have with 3 years of warranty (they do offer four now, but I know I won't need it), and I paid $2,400 with taxes, shipped.

Yeah my blade set itself on fire after LTT praised it so highly and bought one for every employee. And then of course later I hear that half of the LTT units cooked themselves.

@@tazerz9 back in 2016, linus got everyone on staff a blade for christmas after giving the thing a perfect review. My stupid ass bought one. 6 months later it sets itself on fire in my bag. Thankfully my bag smothered it. Needless to say, laptop and bag were both ruined. A year or so later, in a video, linus mentions in passing that every blade 14 gtx 1060 they had failed. And yet they still call razers build quality good. Its super misleading.

Jo K it’s funny how intel tdp numbers are similar to desktop zen, though that doesn’t take into account the differences between their testing.
Imagine a Ryzen 4900HS in a XPS 15, but with a 97Wh battery instead of dedicated graphics and a 1080P screen. That thing will probably outlast your day and run as cool as a cucumber, all while kicking serious 8 thread ass.

I've had friends who've bought previous xps 13 and have had many problems with battery and hardware
I can attest to this, Dell support came to my house twice, replaced the motherboard under warranty and problem persisted. Wound up replacing the battery myself and that fixed it.
Even though the support didn't fix the problem, I will admit sell support is pretty good. I have their monitor too. Wich I had problems with... Maybe I should stop buying Dell.
Owned 9350 9370, everything fine but that persistent coil whining. Dell just not seems care about it.
I keep seeing these machines just die for no reason. They use the same cheap board in the base model on the higher end models, this has been covered on LTT before I believe. It's stupid. It's on par with MacBook reliability.

Seems like everyone is holding out for further implementation of Ryzen CPUs. If I wasn't looking for high quality gaming performance as well and was only interested in an absolute workhorse, I would purchase a Ryzen variant of an XPS 15/17. I'm running into the same sort of situation with the Asus Zephyrus G14 being too small of a screen size for my preference, crossing my fingers they release a larger size.

These are some great products by Dell, would've loved to see them change the finish and design on the top of the devices but man oh man if it isn't one of the most prettiest devices to look at, that big trackpad makes it look a lot nicer as well.
I'm genuinely asking what is the use case of a touchscreen on a regular laptop? Personally I don't see myself using keyboard and a mouse and suddenly reaching to touch the screen. Why? Can someone tell me why regular laptops need touchscreen? 2 in 1 yes, but regular, I don't think so.

@@danwat1234 If I'm sitting on a desk (which is the right way to use a laptop, this is not a tablet) I don't think it's faster to reach and tap the screen than to move the mouse a little bit to the left or right.

@TheGoat yes on a tablet using fingers is a lot more intuitive but on a laptop I have the mouse in my hand why would I reach and scroll when I can just scroll the wheel on the mouse. Or why would I reach to the screen and pinch zoom when I can just again rotate the wheel. For a tablet or two in one of course it's better, but while I have a mouse in my hand and the display is 1 - 1.5 meters away I don't see the point for a touch screen especially if I have to pay more for it.
I would have preferred to have 16:10 AND the large bottom bezel. Tiny side and top bezels are great, but I wouldn't pay more for them over MBP sized bezels. However, a large-ish bottom bezel makes for better ergonomics. Lenovo really got it right with the Yoga C940.
I really can appreciate the very high video quality. The 4k video downsampled to 1080p looks just as good as a Blu-Ray movie does.
Why does most reviewers focus on MacBook's plus but ignore it's shortcomings.
But if it's a Windows machine, they focus on bad things and ignore the good.
Especially when. The MacBook or any Mac is limited, I don't consider them as computers more like tablets that work like computers lol..os so limited, no wonder gamers never look into it

Xps 15 has been my favorite laptop for years... The quality is fantastic. After years of use they still look and function like new.
As a long time student, the ability to charge on either side is AMAZING!!!
Packaging in general has improved so much in the past few years. Remember the packaging for your last laptop 5 years ago? It was like opening a vaccuum cleaner...
Xps has always had decent packaging though. Am still using my 2015 model but the soft touch carbon fibre coating has turned slimey and gross :’)

Pretty sure the 17" 2020 is a tad larger than the 15" 2019 model. It's about the same size as a normal 15" laptop

the crazy thing is the old xps looked modern compared to everything else out and now it looks like it’s dated next to the new one.

It's incredible to me that track pad size is such a big thing for laptop reviewers. The first thing I do with any laptop is find out how to disable the trackpad, and then I only ever turn it on if my mouse breaks.
I've never experienced a trackpad that doesn't make typing impossible by moving the cursor all over the page through random clicks.
I ordered my 9500 in 8/2020. The trackpad clicks work intermittently. It's very frustrating to use the laptop with the touchpad. I called Dell and they sent a repair technician to my house. The new palm rest/keyboard/trackpad also has the wireless antenna. The cable for the antenna was defective. The technician tried for over an hour to get the cable to work, losing his temper and throwing his tools in my livingroom. The technician also said that Dell doesn't know how to design a laptop. He also got mad when he had an extra part he didn't remember where it went back to. He couldn't get the antenna cable back on but did something with a screw to hold it next to it and told me he didn't have all night to sit here and try to fix it. After the machine was "finished" it still had the same click problem. I called Dell and the first two customer service reps hung up on me. I have been trying to speak to a manager for almost a week now to get a replacement unit sent. I'm telling you, I will never buy another Dell product as long as I live. I should have bought a MBP.

When converting from cm² to mm², he just multiplied by ten; for area you need to multiply by 10² (effectively 10 in 2 dimensions).
840 mm² is about the size of a stamp; 135 mm² is about the size of a page number in a book.
Please, when you measure something in inches/pounds and so on - can you just add the conversion to civilized units in post-production?

They have basically the best processor for laptops, a pretty good GPU, they are thinner, have better build quality and have a better trackpad, respectable thermals (in current gen). Higher color accurate screen, better speakers, better design... basically everything. The only thing this 17” has is a 1” bigger screen with smaller bezels and a higher performing graphics card by about 30%.
Also better battery life on MacBook

From my experience using a dell xps 15 for a little over 3 years before it just randomly died on me, I wouldn’t be surprised if this new one slows down alot and eventually dies right after the warranty ends.
AT my work a lot of us have xps 15 (9560 for me) and there is a lot of things to like (battery life, design, screen, keyboard), but there is a LOT of us that experienced countless issues, notably with the thunderbolt dock, the fans (mine were changed twice in 2 years), charging boards, motherboard replacement, driver issues, etc....my computer is 2 years old, I can't believe I still have so many driver updates that can still crash my machine..
My IT department is sick of them, and they almost always have 5 XPS just waiting to be fixed.
And while the lack of the rj45 wasn't so bothering (we use them a lot for connection to automation equipment), if my next pc doesn't have a single regular USB A, it's going to make everyone life so hard
I understand the "world" is moving to USB C, while that's true for personal equipment, it's definitely not the time for professionals
I guess I will have to old onto this one.....
Finally a refresh on those devices, im so fricking stoked about it!!!!!!

@Dulce periculum Ryzen is another processor made by a company called AMD. It's important because the value (I mean performance per euro/dollar) proposition of Ryzen is quite impressive compared to the competition. It's especially amazing with pro workloads Therefore, having such an amazing value in quality laptop like the Dell G lineup could be amazing :D

Maybe they dont want to? Asus doesnt do it on most of their devices (including the 17 inch), Razer doesnt do it and Apple doesnt do it either. Out of the top of my head i can only think of Lenovo and HP as companies which consistently put a numberpad on their 17 inch models.

Functionality isn't exactly something you should be compromising on a large-form-factor laptop. When you've committed to a 17 inch, super-portability has moved down your list because you're likely not moving it multiple times a day, or for that matter outside of your house.
I'm fine without the numpad, in fact I really don't like them on laptops because I don't like how it shifts my hands off-center with the system.

Agreed. They could have put 1 or 2 usb A at the back and dare I suggest an HDMI? It's like those who emove the good old jack on phone. Their bluetooth will never replace the convenience of a cable that don't nescessitate to be charged and can be plugged in another device in half a second.

I might have been interested in the 17, but who's ever heard of a 17" laptop with no number pad. Plus, who needs that many thunderbolt ports, but no USB-A. I know they include a C-A dongle, but needing one is just gross. I'm old school. I could live without a CD drive (under duress), but no laptop will ever win me over without USB-A.
I have an inspiron 17in and it has a number pad. What I dislike about it is that the keyboard is offset and I have never gotten to use it. However I do like the number pad. Agree, these should have usb-a ports, especially a laptop, and there is plenty of room for it.

The next review needs a serious throttle test. I've had never ending thermal issues with my i9 9570 - often throlling down to ~500mhz at IDLE
Dell updates are horrendous, that's what ruins the experience for me.
Also, their quality control seems pretty bad. I switched to windows recently and thought about buying an XPS, but I ended up going for a surface laptop instead after reading about tons of people who had problems with wifi, updates, drivers, loud coil whine, unreliable performance etc. Reliability is extremely important for my work so I was "forced" to go with a surface. I've had zero problems so far. That beingsaid, the new XPS laptops look a lot more modern.
If only they had a Ryzen model :(
It's a shame. I'm guessing most of their target audience aren't necessarily very techy, so Intel is more appealing due to its name.

I'd love to replace my 9370, but:
- I don't want to go down on usb-c slots (I have 3 now)
- I'd like to have 1080p touch display. Or, at worst, a guarantee that I will be able to use a lower resolution like 1920x1200 if it's 16:10 (I'm using 1920x1080 on my 4k display, because windows scaling just isn't reliable enough)
- the insert key needs to be a separate key

Why do I feel like the perfect laptop ever made for both gaming n' cpu intensive tasks was right here within Dell's grasp... & yet they didn't build it? It would of been the XPS model that combined the 15" screen size/footprint; but with the better GPU, the RTX 2060 MaxQ n' more importantly, the vapor chamber thermal solution of the 17". This would've bumped up both the thickness n' weight to be somewhere between these 2 models... but, dare I say it'd be the 'Ultimate' laptop, imo.

You guys should check out Lenovo's laptops line-up. Thinkpads are great for professionals but the build quality of the Yoga lineup has made me switch from mac to PC pretty recently. Thin laptop, pretty good graphics card, all aluminum chassis and decently priced.
They did check ThinkPads on a few occasions now with hot takes like "TrackPoint bad"

Could webcams be better? Sure. But I feel like they're expecting 4k cameras hooked up without even considering why 720p makes sense.

Regarding the camera thing, I would honestly hope to have more than a 1MPx camera on a 1400$ laptop. Not talking about 4K (lol that would be so stupid to have, but you're right that could be a selling point for some people), a decent 720p or FHD cam which handles low-lights fairly well (mine doesn't) would in my opinion be nice to have, and contributes to the overall quality feel of the laptop.
I know it's super old video but several mistakes: dell 15 9500 has 1650 Ti mobile not maxQ. It has performance close to 1060 mobile while a maxQ 1650 Ti is much worse. Another mistake is dell 15 9500 CAN and WILL draw 130 watt, the peak can even pass that limit. Final one is, the guess about battery time is right but with large battery and FHD+, it can run 16 hours, which is more than enough. Plus one: Dell 15 9500 still has the heatness isolation between keyboard and the motherboard, which is surprisingly, to some extent anti-spill. It cannot prevent damages from water but will reduce the repair cost compared to macbook pro. If you are lucky, you don't need to repair at all.

There you have it: a 1:1 design match with the Macbook lineup. Add to that a price range that offers more performance pr dollar across all Macbooks and you have a very compelling offering!
