For the turbo nerds here is some more stuff I learned about the OLED display verifying my findings with some experts: -The pixels on this display aren’t what you’d see on a lot of traditional Pentile-type displays, which have double the amount of G subpixels compared to R and B (because your eyes are more sensitive to green). -The B subpixel area is twice that of either the R or G subpixel area. That is not a surprise: Considering that blue OLED decay is much faster than that of R or G, use of twice (or more) area on B enables half or less J (current density, mA/cm2), which reduces the B aging rate. -We were curious if the B subpixel pairs were independently driven or if Samsung cheated when making the panel and driving them together, effectively giving you 1080Ps worth of B pixels. An image was created with a single white pixel on a black background and we verified that the B subpixel pairs are independently driven with the microscope. -It was speculated that the screen might look weird because the blue pixels aren't on the same center line as the red and green ones. I looked at a totally green screen but the dirtyness was still there, making the screendoor effect theory more solid. -Part of the “dirtiness” is mediocre “Mura correction”. Since each individual pixel is emitting it’s own light on an OLED panel it is important that it is properly calibrated so the brightness of each pixel is the same. This information gets baked into the firmware of each individual OLED display, and if the calibration wasn’t done the whole thing would look horrible. -Certain vision astigmatisms will make you a lot more sensitive to pentile layouts, it is possible I'm just really sensitive to this and you might be fine. -These Samsung OLED panels are basically impossible to properly colour calibrate. There isn’t enough power to run the whole thing at max brightness, so the colours/brightness of the scene can change depending on the total power draw of the panel. -All of these artifacts are imperceptible if you’re about 2’ away from the display, but are noticeable at about 1.5’ (fairly typical for using a laptop). -I was able to see the individual subpixels with my naked eye on the XPS 15’s IPS display, but had to get uncomfortably close. Anyway, if there are any display nerds with more info hit me up @AlexTheGreatish, this was a fun little rabbit hole. -AC

I'm waiting for a laptop like this with a killer amd cpu instead of that intel-heat-problem. Whichever company get's something like that out in a quality like the Dell I'm instantly buying it.
Yeah... Good thing you noticed that OLED image quality issue. I was wondering how the heck they managed to squeeze in a 15" 4K OLED touch panel in a $1500 laptop when you can barely get IPS screens with 4K touch at that price point. This old tech explains it. But this laptop with a normal IPS LCD seem to be a good bargain in todays ridiculously priced market space.
I also have a HP laptop, grey keyboard with back light turned on makes it really hard to see what is on the keys. Also my fan ramps up really quickly and it is quite loud.
@@Harley411 build quality is good for the zephyrus. What are you talking about? Everyone says the color accuracy of the zephyrus is good, at 117% srgb.
My job has been issuing out HP Envy 15s as company laptops since last year, the build quality on them is super nice. We've had our issues with them, being an enterprise and all, but overall they're not bad. Mine does have a ghosting issue with the backlight/panel, but not many people have this issue.
It was just in a position to be picked up better by the microphone. Especially when heard briefly, people tend to equate louder with better, but you'd have to listen more closely or hear it better to pick out the differences in frequency response very well. The bass was mostly just "missing" on the HP.
Envy 15 owner here.... I believe that the hinge flex shown at 3:52 may be limited to your unit.... I have the 2020 HP Envy 15 and I am not experiencing this issue. That being said, people on reddit have discussed a variety of QC issues with this particular model, even if I haven't experienced any myself. Overall it's a great device, at a great price! The vapor chamber makes a huge difference allowing smooth gaming without the thermal issues that XPS models have had in the past (I used to own a 9550).
I like the option of a Barrel connector because if you only have usb c charging you loose a type c port. If they only provide a USB c charger, it would be nice to have an extra usb c port instead of a barrel connector in that case...
HP has been on a roll the last 5 years. I have an older Envy 13 with an MX150 inside - it’s super reliable with a great screen, battery life and MacBook build quality, and can handle the occasional Starcraft 2 game. I’m actually looking at their Omen 27i monitor, which combines color accuracy with a 165hz refresh rate. Even in my office, the workstations with that “cheap” enterprise screens look great. They’ve come a long way!
Having now used an alternative, lengthened aspect ratio for a couple of years (like 3:2 or 16:10), I'll never go back to a 16:9 again no matter how good or cheap the laptop is. While it doesn't seem like a big difference, in productivity work, it really is.
When you pulled the vapor chamber - it was connected/adhered by this black tape to the smaller radiators. Might it be a carbon thermal pad type of deal? Because THEN it might have a lot of sense.
Isnt the Vapor Chamber nearly the same as in the razor Blade 15, ist it? der8auer made a video on it. also the red glue around some components looks the same and is placed the same
I could be wrong but I think you are the first to actually put the HP Envy 15 out there. I looked for months, never found anything. I'd ask reviewers if they would ever get their hands on one. Uniform response is HP does not send review units out... so I bought the XPS 9500. Oh and Dell will not even attempt a price match against the Envy 15. Curious to see some benchmarks on it, but overall I'm very satisfied with my XPS 9500.
Have this laptop right now for 1 Month now. Still stunned by this device and can't really confirm the critic points. What is a bit enjoying for me is, that the buttom cover is not so stiff in the middle, you can slightly push it inside. Otherwise, no problems with heat and fan noise. On battery with few tweaks my fan is not kicking. Battery is awesome COMPARING to my old laptop without optimus. With enabled Battery Saver i can get out roughly 7 hours by doing office tasks.
Honestly HP always disappoints me, when I started uni I needed a powerful laptop for some cad and rendering stuff and I went for the 2019 HP omen 15 because specs seemed good for the price, Long story short first one the gpu dies in 2 days, got it replaced, second one came with a screen issue and a broken fan, and third one came with a gpu with a bunch of artifacts, this over a period of a couple of weeks, so eventually I complained enough to HP that they gave me a refund rather than a replacement, so I went for the ROG Zephyrus 701GWR and that one has no issues. My friend got the 17 inch omen instead and in 2 months he got a dead gpu too, and my father has had an HP ultrabook, I think it was the specter line and that laptop was littered with issues too, HP laptops seem good on paper but in reality they are pretty bad, also customer support is a big pain
I concur. I was buying and preparing laptops to accompany a high tech product my employer sold. Long story short, all of the HP's required lots of time and effort to remove bloatware and most of them developed issues. My own laptop is a Lenovo 17" with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM. I bought it a few years back and whilst I am ready to upgrade, the damned thing won't die.
I'm honestly fascinated with this. As someone who used to be a Lenovo guy but have been using Macbooks now for a few years (for both Windows and macOS), I'd forgotten about all the little things that I just don't worry about any longer, like screen quality issues, hinge quality, and all those other little things. Oh, and 200W power bricks... wow. While the additional ports are really nice... now that I've embraced the USB-C world and I've bought all the cables ( and a USB-C dock... which is essential). I'm used to it and in some ways prefer it. You DO have to be more organized but in general... I'm not using HDMI/SD/USB-A all the time ( when undocked ).
@ 11:05 I don't think it could be a graphite sheet just over the exposed RAM modules. Even in its composite form is electrically conductive, it would damage the whole thing. Silly thing, but it did trigger me. Good video, the computer seems quite solid, tho.
Holy cow! Full sized ports and more than 2?! Well done HP... this is pretty awesome. Would have liked an RJ45 port but I also like the Dock-life. But: Full sized ports and more than two of them! In 2020! I might consider buying HP again... after two of their laptops randomly died on me in the past.
Aside from the screen wobble (I'd have to judge the actual screen in person), I like it. Also like seeing they adopted good cooling practices normally seen on gaming notebooks as well. This is generally the notebooks I like - not game focused, no gamer looks, but still capable of gaming in a pinch when called upon.
Yeah, I feel as though in recent years HP is becoming a big competitor to large Laptop brands like Lenovo, Dell, and even Apple. Hope they succeed because their laptops are very well made and have solid performance. Best of all, they are way easier to fix than a MacBook (Cheaper I bet too)
1:31 What's the opposite of peel porn called? Because this is it. Also, can companies STOP making silver keyboards with white backlighting. It makes the keys hard to read in alot of mid to low light conditions when you'd actually want to turn it on.
agreed. it's so weird. Just got ours yesterday and it was one of the first things I noticed, in addition to the screen door effect on the 4k monitor. Not that happy.
I really wish HP would go back to writing out "Hewlett Packard" on their laptops. I have a spectre x360 with "HP" written out and it looks freaking awesome and looks super premium. Everyone always asks what it is and I love it. Also, what is the difference between the Envy series and the Spectre series?
Usually HP = "Heating Pad" Every HP I've owned has had a combination of heating issues, lots of fan noise, and poor battery life. The price may be ok, but if it turns out to be another paperweight, or hand-me-down to my nieces / nephews then why bother.
Couldn’t agree more. I have noticed HP cuts corners in different areas to produce a product with great specs for a great price but in the end an inferior product. I work on computers for a living, and Intel Optane also creates issues on consumer products. HP tends to use them a lot from what I’ve seen. I love the idea of optane but it not worth it for now.
Yeah, as a person who has used several Pavilions over his life, they do get hot and loud after a while. You have to clean them kind of frequently, but if you do so the price to performance of their machines are great.
I have a question. I'm looking for a laptop to do 1080p video editing for my UA-cam channel. I use windows movie maker (yes, still have it 😁) It's easy. So, do I really need a dedicated graphic card or Intel iris xe with I7 and 16gb ram will be enough? Right now, I upload a 15 minutes 1080p video in 20 minutes with my desktop with I7 and older system from 2017. Thinking about buying the Samsung book pro with iris xe or Dell xps 15 with iris xe.. Or should I buy the GeForce rtx 3050?Thanks 👍
Btw are the reviewed laptops settings checked? For example if speakers are set to the highest or higher than default frequency (usually 48khz). Because I think it's important
This video suited you incredibly well Alex. Also the screen stuff super important and cool. Bottom line, in general, can you tell about that 'dirtiness'? Because when you did the voice over, you said something about being "too close", but I saw you just sitting there and typing at a "using my laptop" distance. So I'm not sure how much further away they want you to be from... a laptop. I'd say if the screen isn't amazing or you can tell about these things then it's not worth using it.
No AMD version? sorry I'll pass. If HP drops an Envy/similar laptop with a 4000 series Renoir chip, consider me intrigued, $1600 for a laptop that could easily be made better (Lower thermals, lower power consumption and longer battery life) it could easily be closer to $1400 if they went with that specs list instead
The problem with Amd laptops is that their design sucks. Amd is superior in Intel as of now but there are not good laptops with amd. Can some one recommend me a 15 inch with Amd 4000 series

I mean, you could attack me saying most since most low-end ones will not so I'm really referring to mid-range to top tier ones but OMEN. OMEN. Let that sink in. If that didn't sink in, The Omen line is HP's gaming line. Also, which model do you have? where does it say it has power delivery? I am legitimately interested if I am wrong as this will be the first case where, if what you are saying is true, it says PD but does not support PD charging of the device. A link to the product on HP's website would be swell.
As to why I want type c charging on a 200W laptop. Because laptops are not just for gaming, just like this one, a non gaming laptop. Most of the time, you will be doing productivity where 100 watts is ample to top up the battery given at a lower rate. not mentioning you could lump around a charger that is 1/4 the size and 1/2 the weight.

I was so excited to see that OLED spec as well but hey ho.
It's not all THAT BAD lmao. It would actually be great with most people stuck at 250nits currently
I don't think it's "old" tech
@@AgusSimoncelli yes, that too 😂
I wish they make 1440P panels instead of 4K. It saves you a lot of battery life.
My guess before watching is that if this actually killed the XPS, we’d see a review video on LTT first
For sure not, solely because of the less usable 16:9 screen, inferior speakers, smaller trackpad, more plastic, etc.
@@m-stat9 I was gonna look into this laptop, but then you said "inferior speakers."

My job has been issuing out HP Envy 15s as company laptops since last year, the build quality on them is super nice. We've had our issues with them, being an enterprise and all, but overall they're not bad. Mine does have a ghosting issue with the backlight/panel, but not many people have this issue.
Maybe it's different when you're in-person, but did anyone else think the HP sounded better than the XPS?
bruh it sounded way better on the video. maybe it did sound diff irl
its just yours headphones/audio setup sucks
It was just in a position to be picked up better by the microphone. Especially when heard briefly, people tend to equate louder with better, but you'd have to listen more closely or hear it better to pick out the differences in frequency response very well. The bass was mostly just "missing" on the HP.
Some people like flat music and some like bass
HP laptops usually have awesome sound in light of the limitations of the speakers' size since Bang & Olufsen tune the speaker setups for HP
The bottom looks very similar to omen 15
Omg! Just noticed credits at the end! Cool! Thanks guys for making this video! :)

What was the video you were watching at @8:10? Looks like LMG made a heist film; can we check that out?
when even the unboxing channel for LTT pulls out a microscope.
When you pulled the vapor chamber - it was connected/adhered by this black tape to the smaller radiators. Might it be a carbon thermal pad type of deal? Because THEN it might have a lot of sense.
"the way the pickles are lined up"
Isnt the Vapor Chamber nearly the same as in the razor Blade 15, ist it?

I could be wrong but I think you are the first to actually put the HP Envy 15 out there. I looked for months, never found anything. I'd ask reviewers if they would ever get their hands on one. Uniform response is HP does not send review units out... so I bought the XPS 9500. Oh and Dell will not even attempt a price match against the Envy 15. Curious to see some benchmarks on it, but overall I'm very satisfied with my XPS 9500.
Nice fearless flyers shirt, my dude.
7:33 I wonder why screens haven't been made the way the Bayer sensor is made. Than deBayering would not be an issue.
I'd be very interested to see the real world thermal performance of this compared to the XPS 15.
I really like the Envy lineup. The x360 is an amazing laptop!
7:22 OMG thanks Alex I was just having the same problem with my new monitor, moving it back on my desk totally fixed it.
"a lot of ports" lmaooooo
So sad that we manufacturers make laptops so thin and sacrifice cooling and functionality :(
Yea Right!!!! It hurts to see a machine not getting some breathing space and they're like let it get uncomfortably heated then.
@ 11:05 I don't think it could be a graphite sheet just over the exposed RAM modules. Even in its composite form is electrically conductive, it would damage the whole thing. Silly thing, but it did trigger me. Good video, the computer seems quite solid, tho.
Ah yes, "Who's Dis?!", a well known editor of LMG.
Looking at most if the comments, I thought only I noticed that
Best of all, they are way easier to fix than a MacBook (Cheaper I bet too)
The crosshatching effect or screendoor effect is due to the touch digitizer its also present in hp spectre series too
1:31 What's the opposite of peel porn called? Because this is it.
Also, can companies STOP making silver keyboards with white backlighting. It makes the keys hard to read in alot of mid to low light conditions when you'd actually want to turn it on.
agreed. it's so weird. Just got ours yesterday and it was one of the first things I noticed, in addition to the screen door effect on the 4k monitor. Not that happy.
I have the envy 13 2018 and the backlighting is blueish. It is weird
Usually HP = "Heating Pad"
Every HP I've owned has had a combination of heating issues, lots of fan noise, and poor battery life.
I love the idea of optane but it not worth it for now.
they did get their shit together with the new OMEN though. that thing's a cooling beast...
Yeah, as a person who has used several Pavilions over his life, they do get hot and loud after a while. You have to clean them kind of frequently, but if you do so the price to performance of their machines are great.
Hey, what is the name of that video you showed us here with Linus wearing that robber's mask/outfit??
huge fail on that screen, how did that pass the muster at the factory.
It wasnt defective, thats just how the technology is built. They are using an older style of OLED to make it fit into this price point.
Is it just me or does the HP laptop look just like the Razer Blade 15???
Pretty much, inside as well. They could have compared it to the Blade 15 as well.
Btw are the reviewed laptops settings checked? For example if speakers are set to the highest or higher than default frequency (usually 48khz). Because I think it's important
