Removing physical F keys was a huge mistake on the new XPS laptops. Like someone else said: It’s the TouchBar that does nothing new, while doing the original worse. RIP XPS laptops. Press F to pay respects.
No one liked the apple touchbar and they removed it? No one liked the capacitive buttons of the XPS 13 plus? Let's make it the default on our 14 and 16 models 😇

I hoped the function keys being capacitive was some special for the XPS 13 plus, not happy seeing it on the rest of the lineup. Any idea if the AI key can be returned to function as CTRL in bios? Seems like the whole series is unsuitable for power users now

If there’s one thing I’m glad Dell changed is moving to haptic trackpads, because those trackpad sizes on the XPS 17 was way too big for a diving board mechanism, but yeah, this generation looks cool, but it feels very form-over-function; a XPS 15/17 with a haptic trackpad would’ve made the chassis relevant for a while
I disagree on new Alienware - the reason the old one was so big was because of that massive heatsink to help it cope with temperatures. It was an appreciated feature absent in most other laptops that instead were power limited and thermal throttled. This is an ongoing issue since GTX 900M series up to this day - it's bad to the point where you can buy laptops with exact same spec with noticeably different performance. All in pursuit of questionable form factor aesthetics. I'm sorry but if I'm buying a high performance laptop, I'd rather compromise on volume rather than performance - I expect every $ of performance to be squeezed out and not choked down because someone wanted to brag about 2mm slimmer chassis in their marketing slides...
Weird question, you choose how the function keys light up in the bios, extremely unintuitive, but how do you get in the bios? What keys do you tap when it's waking up to go to the bios?
Kudos to Linus Tech Tips for reviving the kitchen set! Even though it looks like a set not an actual kitchen anymore, it's awesome to see it come back. The nostalgia hits hard, and it's incredible how far this channel has come. Looking forward to the creative content that'll come out of this revamped space!
I could deal with the F-keys, but no full size SD-Cardreader is a dealbreaker for me as a photographer. Battery and performance would be so great pressumably.
I don't understand why any laptop would have any less than 2x USB-C and 2x USB-A ports? Especially ones that aren't super thin and lights. Also I don't get why laptops don't all have some combination of USB ports on either side. Sometimes it's just more convenient to plug something in on one side instead of the other.
It sucks that they got rid of the RTX4080 and 4090 options for the M16. I'm glad I decided to go with the M18 last year. I only wish I could have jumped up to the 4090, though the 4080 is no slouch for being a laptop gaming machine. So far, it's been a great computer.
strange coincidence that both asus and dell have stopped offering laptop 4090s (in the products weve seen today) and both now only offer 4070s, with big usability improvements. idk just kinda odd, i dont mind though :)
what about the screen brightness of the m16? they used to only go upto 350nits. Also theres no point mentioning the 142W powerlimit of the 4070 as it doesnt gain any performance beyond 100W
100% agree, the weak point on the outgoing Alienware models has been display brightness and lack of OLED/Mini-led options. For sure there is no point in pumping 142W through that 4070 for little to no performance gains. They finally have gotten rid of that bulge at the rear which is to be commended, the old form factor never made any sense to me as it made the laptop awkward to carry around.
I like the new design but the overall package just isn't worth it anymore, especially without Function Keys, the G14 is probably going to cost the same and it's thin enough and small enough to compete with the XPS 14, especially since the only selling point to me was that the Xps was a 2in1 back in the day.
As a very long time XPS user, the missing function keys and non-upgradable SSD + RAM is a big no 😢 I hope they release their R&D modular laptop or I would be considering other laptops in the future.
Alex said it (more or less): the new XPS is now called "Alienware". The new Alienware is a good XPS. The new XPS, on the other hand, is a huge step backwards :/.
The 13 Plus XPS has always been for people with small hands. The 14 to 16 inch Dell XPS sizes for 2024 is aligned with most competitors (Apple, Lenovo, Asus, and HP).
Not sure if I am with you on the Alienware stuff. This is aimed at performance and gaming. Make an educated guess how many gamers care about going outside anyways. It is still easy to take to your gaming buddies or an event compared to a desktop. Why would you want to sacrifice performance for portability when portability is not a main requirement anyways.
These look pretty awesome actually. The only concern I have w the XPS is dpc latency cuz I make music and need that low as it can go. We need to all switch to usb-c cuz that's how it should have been from the beginning. USB-A(nnoying) is a pain in the ass.
Just make it a two in one like the x16!! The flow x16 has a 13900h and a 140w 4070. It also has a 240hz 1100nit 1440p mini led display. Using it as a tablet with bluestacks is crazy. I just wish dell did this instead of leaving it to asus to screw up quality control.
anyone else think the alienware chassis looks a bit like the old latitudes core 2 duo era with lid closed? ex user of the original XPS M1330s (yep the static discharge alu faceplate models!) id have the XPS ovver the alienware any day.
I will never understand the removal of full size sd card slots from high-end pro laptops. As a photographer, I LOVE the screens on these but the lack of sd card slot and making the keyboard more clunky turns me away.
I just don't get the idea of microSD card reader, what are we supposed to do with it? stick our microSD card into camera? as far as I understand SD card reader is for the majority of cameras, not so many device use microSD card (apologies if I am wrong), that's the reason we want a delicate SD card reader to make life easier, so what's the point for the microSD card reader?
"It isn't even one of those 'barely-a-4070s" - *has the minimum configurable TDP for that GPU* Yeah, sorry, that is exactly what it is. Don't get me wrong - it'll be better than a 60W 4060, and more than 80W total power for that chassis would be incredibly stupid in terms of cooling and thermals - but it's still as low a spec as you'll get.
I'm sorry but not having a separate charging port but using usb c instead is not an upgrade. Nerfing it down to micro SD card.. the capacitive touch keys.. ugh Dell 😐
Is there a break key on the keyboard? maybe scroll lock? do any touchpads support momentum? why is Synaptics still the only one to make trackball mode for touchpads?
Honestly this is a good albeit extremely predatory strategy to increase the prices of the laptops. They keep the same maximum price as last year with worse hardware, justify it by "improving" the laptop overall instead. And then they release the top spec for even more money. And even if they dont, they are still making significantly more margins regardless, since they are charging 4090 money and selling a 4070 instead. Are people really not seeing what laptop manufacturers are doing?
Really love the new lineup from Alienware and had an XPS before. It was a tough choice between it and the M3 Pro MB-Pro. In the end I got the M3 Pro however, it's wipeing the floor with the Intel 13900hx, just neverending battery life and unreasonable good performance.
Gaming Laptops should be thicker, not thinner. Just by looking at it I can see that it's going to overheat making fans spin like crazy and sounding like a jet engine going off. The display looks bland, like it's missing the Glossy Corning Gorilla Glass from cell phones; almost like it's been stripped and made into a TFT panel (old school). It looks great from far away but the Alienware M18 looks like it needs a re-make. Where is the biometrics fingerprint ID scanner? Dell probably didn't include one.
Alex feels like he’s trying to sell us something and not really adressing how they basically downgraded the entire line with worse specs, less beefy cooling and for some godforsaken reason removed the function keys. Also do these dell laptops have the same problem where the vrms overheat because the design was never adapted to new hardware?
the takes on this just make me wonder what weird stuff he uses for bags and exactly why his takes on laptops are focused on the odd points like a head phone jack and SD card slot. Why I'm not getting HDMI or a displayport, way more relevant to a professional and gaming implementation.
Yea they had to stop getting RMA's some how already had a dead battery in less then 6 months with my m16. Hoesntly i dont even game as much as i used to either so haven't even used it that much really. Pretty upsetting to be honest. I have a 4090 all the games i turn it down so it doesn't heat up as much. Thats why there aren't going to be anymore 4080 to 4090 models. 🤬
I haven't watched ShortCircuit in a while so I might be off base, hovever the exitement in these CES related laptop videos seems really forced and inauthentic to me (like more than usual).
