Getting in to this car with certain "expectations" from various reviews, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with the performance and driving dynamics. It's not 3 series but it is a lot of fun to drive and well equipped. I'm happy with it and it's more fun to drive than you might expect. Comments on the excellent fuel economy are spot on.
This car is nice. People love to criticize without seeing the actual car. For those saying this is like a Kia or Hyundai...you probably haven't ever had or been able to afford a higher end car. Videos have done this car no justice..nice ride and very appealing to the eye.
Really no reason to get this over a nice midsize sedan (AWD available on Camry, Altima, Kia Optima/K5) unless you're about the badge. Mazda 6 (soon AWD, hopefully) outclasses this completely for less money.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched this. My friend's new Honda is better equipped than this BMW and it cost way less money. The Mazda 6 is also a beautiful sedan. Would much rather a Mazda than a BMW any day.
Typical bias against luxury brands. The quality of this is still many times better than mainstream. You guys clearly never owned luxury brands or you would know how much less plastic there is in any luxury brand like BMW. And no I don’t like this 2 series. Just tired of clueless comments people make. Yes there is brand factor, no it is not priced twice as much cuz of a badge. I agree cars like Accord is much better value but to say it outclasses this is just an ignorant comment.
@@dailyrant4068 I agree the Accord is no BMW, but I'll take the naturally aspirated V8 of the Lexus GS-F AND have a car that will rise in price in the future.
@@kr46428 I had a 2018 6 for about a year. It was fantastic in every way except the ride was a bit rough sometimes on bad roads because of the low profile tires. Other than that it was really quiet, handled great, was fast and the high torque kept if from shifting as often as some cars might.
$52K for a well loaded 2 series. How desperate one must be to drive a car with that badge that will live 1/3 of its life in a mechanic's garage. Acura, Lexus - better, real-world choices.
@vvvVFANGSVvvv But logically why would anyone pay that for a FWD when you can get a 330i M sport at $50k or the 340i for $60k ... that's not entry level anymore. That was the point of the 2 series was to be affordable and appealing to younger buyers.
Seriously. A Jetta GLI is just as fast, and fully loaded with the digital dash is under $30k. If you need AWD a fully loaded Mazda 3 is also under $30k.
Maybe Acura, but hell no with the Lexus. I hate this new 2 series, but their 2021 IS is even worse. 6 speed on 2021 is just spitting on customer's face.
Tired to listen everybody saying that it's not a good car just because it costs 50k. If you want to spend only 30k just go with it! Stop comparing it with kias and acuras and others. It's a great car definitely, if you have money for it and you want it, just buy it. Bmw will never be cheap, it never was.. Cheaper brands are always trying to copy bmw and mercedes, sorry to disappoint you but they will never get the same level, that's why people keep buying them.
After mentioning the Cadillac and Volvo, Alex missed the most obvious alternative; the Genesis G70. The G70 is rwd/awd and also starts under 40K, while maxing out at around 55K. Only reasons to buy the 228i are you WANT a small car for urban commuting or you have to have the BMW badge. The Genesis, Caddy and Volvo all give you a much better car for similar money.
First car to come to my mind. It's easily the best reasonably priced 3-series competitor, better than the S60, with its compromised driving dynamics and iffy reliability. About all the Volvo offers is nice styling and reasonable power. The G70 is a well-rounded package that doesn't need to be optioned up like the BMW or Mercedes.
The A Class looks way better. The BMW looks blobby. The A Class looks way more sleek. The BMW looks like a 1 series hatchback that was made a sedan. It has that odd proportion towards the back whereas the A Class doesn't. You can see Mercedes was doing front wheel drive long before bmw because they actually got it to look right.
In other markets, we get the new 1 Series hatch. I'd buy that over this any day. Very cool and actually has some headroom. I love the A class hatch too!
In person this car looks really good, and Alex usually has faster zero 60 times than most other publications, perhaps it was the tires that were on his loaner car but Car and Driver states “ Yet, the acceleration of the 228i is virtually identical to that of the 330i xDrive that we tested last year. Only 5.1 seconds is needed to hit 60 mph, and the car covers the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds at 99 mph” which is very impressive and faster than the John Cooper Works mini that it shares an engine with the B 48👌
If you want the Mini, just get the Mini. Much better interior space and materials and less expensive. The Countryman is markedly bigger inside than X1. The BMW naming has gone completely off the rails though. The 228i Grand Coupe is entirely different than the 228i Non-Grand Coupe.

People talk about the price but y’all do realize it’s still a BMW Right regardless of it’s specs! Just like with any other luxury cars or luxury items, it is the branding which is what makes it expensive. If you can afford it good and if u can’t then oh well. You can do whatever u want with ur money.
I agree that you get a lot for your money with the main stream cars such as the Camry V6 accord 2.0 T, and the Kia K5 especially in GT Form, however The dealership experience at BMW is much better than those main stream options, and yes it does look like an expensive car If you care about the badge which I do when I’m spending $400-500 a month, also BMW has pretty cheap lease rates. The free scheduled maintenance on BMWs is also a nice perk, admittedly I’m not certain if I the other main stream brands include this but it adds up. I currently have a 2019 mini Cooper S and when I take my car in for service they always hook me up like for instance last week they gave me a 2021 BMW M440i coupe which is a $72,000 car and a hoot to drive, I guarantee that if you take your Camry in for service they’re not gonna be giving you a Supra, Or if you take your Kia in they’re not gonna be giving you a genesis G 80 etc. etc.
Radar adaptive cruise isn't standard on the European brands because it's not safety related. It's a convenience. Auto emergency braking takes care of instances where the driver isn't paying attention.

The 2 series Gran coupe is a waste of money. They make it look cheap at first, but then for luxury features that should be standard like sunroof, you have to buy a ton of packages. And at that point just buy a 430i or 330i
Well 50K+ just for the badge...I'm not snobing, I can afford a brand new BMW up to 5 series...but I like my cars reliable, cheap to maintain and run. Like Toyota, Honda, Subaru and perhaps Hyundai. A young cousin of mine graduated university with very high marks and my uncle got her the new X2. I advised him to opt for the RAV4 or Lexus UX or NX but he insisted for a BMW, my cousin isn't a snob and frankly she doesn't really care about badge. After 3 weeks the frond LED head lights started to draw water and condescension...BMW said is completely normal for the head light assembly to get water and condescension, best they can do is to dry the assembly and if we are bothered they can offer to put humidity absorbing packs inside the assembly to stop condescension... 70K car fully loaded and the head lights come with factory fault and BMW refuses to replace them...mean while my "shit box" Toyota Aygo got the same issue at the driver's head light after 4 years and Toyota replaced it for free, no part or labour cost...
BMW stopped being BMW years ago. This abomination is just another example - looks like generic Korean sedan from side, the rear brake lights also look like from any generic Asian sedan, the instrument panel lost traditional round speedometer and tachometer which you can't even get with digital display, no rear wheel drive, no hydraulic steering. Luckily it is still possible to find used BMW cars made in early 2010's with a relatively low mileage.
Good luck with those early 2010s pieces of plastic junk, since you wanna buy the most depreciated, but most expensive to own cars for whatever reason...
For those of us in "Steerage Class" (to borrow a term from "The Flintstones), would you compare the interior in terms of volume to the Civic and Corolla? Based on rear seat legroom, that appears less than what one would get in the Camry or Accord. That's not necessarily a deal breaker if the car is only going to carry one or maybe two people.
Expensive much? I don't understand the logic behind this vehicle. If this is entry level, after options this one is $52k you might as well get the 3 series in that case or even a Camry XSE V6 for less money. The pricing of this car makes no sense.
So they made this front wheel drive, supposedly for space, but it still has little space. And now it's front wheel drive. What's the reason to buy it again? It's compared to a Honda Civic and I'd rather get that.
I am a little confused. I am looking at purchasing a 2021 BMW 230i with manual transmission and it is rear wheel drive. I have never owned a BMW and I am kind of scared to buy one due to all the horror stories I have heard. I drove this car with the automatic transmission and I thought it was fantastic. I just want to own a manual transmission. I can't find any reviews about the car I am looking to buy. What is with this FWD BMW 230i ???? Can anyone help me understand? CORE MODELS 230i Coupe 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, Rear-wheel drive STARTING MSRP $35,900 www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/2-series/coupe/pricing-features.html
It should. I tested the mpg on my one of my fill ups on a 1.5T EX and it went 311 miles on 10.185 gallons which is 30.5 mpg in like 90 percent chicago suburbs city driving.
DailyRant That person sounds like someone that paid cash for their car, because EVERYONE that pays cash for a low tier economy car or mid size sedan always feels the need to tell everyone they paid cash. Almost like a crossfit person or vegans.
@@johnjames7712 Yep and because they don't want to pay the premium for the BMW or whatever, they have to constantly remind themselves that they paid less. I get it, I don't buy top end products for everything either, but to constantly broadcast about these things show the insecurity of your financial situation.
From looking myself - you can get an X Drive 330i with leather, Premium Package and metallic paint for right at $52k. I’m not sure what else the 228 had over that but I doubt it’s much.
I don't understand how you say iDrive is more intuitive. I've used it in a friend's car. It's literally menus within menus within sub menus. It's extremely irritating. I didn't find it intuitive at all. MBUX is better laid out within functions. Like within the map part, it's much easier to enter a destination etc. In the radio part, it's much easier to navigate the options etc. Certainly much easier than BMW's menu menu menu menu submenu layout.
Countless comments proving how clueless people are about the market.... as someone who doesn't appreciate this car as much as most of you, it's really not that difficult to see where the market is trending. Look at the segment, you have a brand new CLA, A-class, A3. It's obvious these companies think customers are going to buy these (and they are probably right). So you can hate it all you want. When Porsche first came out with their SUV, they got so much hate. Now if you look at it now, they clearly made the right choice. Their Macan and Cayennes are best selling and really the only reason they can continue to make 911's.
It’s such a shame a brand like BMW will produce crap like this, a BMW is supposed to be RWD. If BMW want their enthusiasts and loyalists to stay, they’ve got to stop this stuff. And why would people get this over a 3?
Hey Alex, I'm looking forward to your Kia K5 review. I'm very disappointed at the features that this new K5 is missing compared to the Sonata Limited or even the older optima (like real leather, folding mirrors, 360 degree camera, digital instrument panel, etc, etc) I just want to hear your input about it because too many youtubers are not picking up on this. thank you. People leave a like so Alex can see this!
I'm similar in height and size to Alex and the back seat of this car looks very much like the one from my 07 328i. I would not even want to be there for a short ride. This is a VERY small car, so if you plan on carrying people, you better make sure they're 5'8 or shorter and won't get taller. A Honda Civic is bigger than this AND you can get a stick in the Civic Si. Just another needlessly expensive BMW.
Fantastic review as always. I just do not understand the appeal of bothering to build a four-door coupe that you can't actually put people in the backseat? A Toyota Corolla has standard better safety equipment and crash avoidance. And the last generation Nissan versa has More interior room and cargo? maybe I'm just getting old but it seems to be if you build a four-door car you should at least be able to put four people in the car At least for a short drive.
Only the first generation. The second-generation (current) Mini with the B48 engine and the Aisin gearbox shared with 4-cylinder Camry is much more reliable, to the point where dealerships are losing money by not doing enough repairs. Toyota deemed the 4-cylinder B48 and the 6-cylinder B58 to be good enough for the new Supra.
Mini is a niche automaker. Most buyers want a bigger car, and the few who want something that small aren't willing to pay premium prices. It sold for a few years on cuteness as a fashion accessory, but that always wears off.
How does this compare to the 320i? Is the 320i competing with Mercedes A since 228i competes with CLA? How would the two compare in terms of driving dynamics?
If anyone wants to go back to IMO BMW's glory days, go check out Doug DeMuro's main channel. He did a review of the 1989 BMW M3(E30) which is my second favorite BMW of all time. My favorite BMW of all time is the 2001 to 2007 BMW M5(E39) which maybe the greatest sport sedan ever built in terms of power, handling and ride comfort. That M5 suspension was perfect in terms of it would suck up all bumps and pot holes like they weren't there and it had barely any body roll on tight corners at high speeds. It was the most perfect sport sedan!! This BMW 2 series is just crap. I like the M2 because you can get a manual but the body style is fugly like all their cars now. BMW like all car companies who sell in the US know that the huge money and profit is going to SUV'S and that is where they are putting all their R and D money. I would love it if BMW decided to put out a replica of the E30 M3 with a turbo inline 6 and same body style. It would sell like crazy IMO
It's not grand in any sense of the word (except price). It's not a coupe. It's not RWD, hence it's not a real BMW. It's not a manual. It's not a 2.8 litre engine. I would take a Toyota Corolla over this. At least they're honest.
Just wanted to add something. A quick glance at the BMW, Medcedes and Volvo websites. One thing that really struck me was how boring looking Mercedes and Volvo are. Not much color choice and they look like old people cars. BMW much more fun looking. My 2¢
This is the most unattractive BMW currently. The rear isn't bad but that face...nope. The GLA is styled aggressively but the Audi A3 wins in the looks department for me, especially in RS3 guise.
I just never saw the appeal with spending money on a car with virtually no utilitarian benefits whatsoever. In my book anybody behind that wheel over 25 years old - makes no sense to me
@@markmiller3279 Take a look at Alex ratings. Every single tesr so far said the same things: subpar handling, subpar driving feel, poor comfort and cramped rear seats.

Subaru is junk
Condensation is awful! But I guess when someone throws $70k on a silly car they get condensation at no extra charge!
You’ve said it perfectly!!!
Good luck with those early 2010s pieces of plastic junk, since you wanna buy the most depreciated, but most expensive to own cars for whatever reason...
It looks like Ford will indeed continue to produce the Focus sedan, with a new nose.
Instead of focus, Ford should focus on the fusion first
@AoA you brought up the CT4 during the test drive. Will you be doing a review on one soon?
Don't waste your money on the 2 series -- 3 series is a FAR superior car and just a bit more.
Why would one get this and not 4 series for 52k or fully loaded A5 sportback
Exactly! For that money, there are other vehicles with far more options for less money. $52k that's 340i Msport money right there.
mp3....You certainly can't get fully loaded models for 52K. Not new anyway.
@@giofromtexas2679 The 340i STARTS at 54K with no options at all. It can touch almost 80K fully loaded.
Those models are just as feature-poor at their base prices as the 228i. Add on the options most people expect and want and you're up another $10,000.
@@markmiller3279 Yea the German brands know exactly how to nickle & dime a person 😄
Really great review! Thanks
So its better to get an X1 because the passenger seat, like in my 2016, has a power side bolster and costs a lot less than 52K like this is.
Yes and no, because they do offer you the real iD7. Sometimes they try to stagger tech so the cheaper models get less or older tech

The CRV Hybrid doesn't get 30 MPG in the real world?
Woke AF Random.......
@@llcross04 Go rewatch the video.
It should. I tested the mpg on my one of my fill ups on a 1.5T EX and it went 311 miles on 10.185 gallons which is 30.5 mpg in like 90 percent chicago suburbs city driving.
$52k and yet no adaptive cruise?!
wtaf
You get that with a $19k Versa.
Price wise it compete with the Model 3 which I think it is a better car
Ricardo Miyakawa Rather have the Model 3 over this for $52k
John James true!
Over $37,000 and No Spare Tire? Not even a donut tire. I'd never buy it..................
Keith A. Clueless about bmw huh? They have been an option for a long time cuz of run flats
$20075 spent for my 2019 Mazda3 Preferred sedan will do just fine, thanks.
And you felt the need to make this comment?
Not to mention, the Mazda looks better
DailyRant That person sounds like someone that paid cash for their car, because EVERYONE that pays cash for a low tier economy car or mid size sedan always feels the need to tell everyone they paid cash. Almost like a crossfit person or vegans.
@@johnjames7712 Yep and because they don't want to pay the premium for the BMW or whatever, they have to constantly remind themselves that they paid less.
I get it, I don't buy top end products for everything either, but to constantly broadcast about these things show the insecurity of your financial situation.
Alex, check your ad placement. I don’t see any breaks in your video. Did you do that on propose? Thanks for the video! Great stuff as always!
The way YT does ads is EXTREMELY annoying, not everyone will get ads all there time.
Alex on Autos Got it. Maybe because I watch a video before yours and just came from watching an ad. 😣
Why buy this over a $52k 3 Series? It’s $0 in savings when equipped the same! Also the new 2021 A3 looks pretty darn good.
From looking myself - you can get an X Drive 330i with leather, Premium Package and metallic paint for right at $52k. I’m not sure what else the 228 had over that but I doubt it’s much.
Hi Alex.. waiting for Mercedes GLA 2021
$52 for such a small car...i can't. I do like the look of this in the front though, the rear not so much.
This car is beautiful! Dumping my Audi for this😊
So if the 2 series is 52, how much is the 3 series these days? I have a C300 and it was 45... much bigger car..
Great informative video
What’s up with the audio during the pricing and comparison section?
Countless comments proving how clueless people are about the market.... as someone who doesn't appreciate this car as much as most of you, it's really not that difficult to see where the market is trending. Look at the segment, you have a brand new CLA, A-class, A3. It's obvious these companies think customers are going to buy these (and they are probably right). So you can hate it all you want.
When Porsche first came out with their SUV, they got so much hate. Now if you look at it now, they clearly made the right choice. Their Macan and Cayennes are best selling and really the only reason they can continue to make 911's.
Didn't know the G70 was so bad it wasn't worth a mention
It’s such a shame a brand like BMW will produce crap like this, a BMW is supposed to be RWD. If BMW want their enthusiasts and loyalists to stay, they’ve got to stop this stuff. And why would people get this over a 3?
A spare tire is a necessity, not an option.
Nope, this one is runflat
Hey Alex, I'm looking forward to your Kia K5 review. I'm very disappointed at the features that this new K5 is missing compared to the Sonata Limited or even the older optima (like real leather, folding mirrors, 360 degree camera, digital instrument panel, etc, etc) I just want to hear your input about it because too many youtubers are not picking up on this. thank you. People leave a like so Alex can see this!
Th3 difference between a luxury and a mainstream brand is that the luxury brand charges extra for everything.
still looking for what make this specific model car a luxury car? other than the badge on the hood.
52k?
And 52K isn't even fully loaded!
Kind of insulting that adaptive cruise control is optional...that literally comes standard on a base model Toyota Corolla.
Yes but unfortunately that’s how all German luxury brands option their cars
I like this better
I wish that BMW made the 2 series gran coupe a liftback like the old 4 series gran coupe and the Audi A7 or A5 sportback
Then they would be competing with themselves lol
Brian Cooley would call you a "pompous ass" if you buy a low end car like this just for the high end badge.
Or a 1-2 year old 3 series for less than the 2 series...?
I'm similar in height and size to Alex and the back seat of this car looks very much like the one from my 07 328i. I would not even want to be there for a short ride. This is a VERY small car, so if you plan on carrying people, you better make sure they're 5'8 or shorter and won't get taller. A Honda Civic is bigger than this AND you can get a stick in the Civic Si. Just another needlessly expensive BMW.
for u 2 troll about. Just another needlessly expensive BMW that makes them full range manufacturer & explains why they've been expanding for 60 years.
Is it a real BMW? Yes!
Is it a traditional BMW? No!
Mini has failed due to their horrific reliability, they are nicely packaged and a hoot to drive, but too expensive and inexcusable lack of .quality
@@Ficon Didn't toyota tweak to make it up to their reliability standards though? I thought they did something like that
Mini is a niche automaker. Most buyers want a bigger car, and the few who want something that small aren't willing to pay premium prices. It sold for a few years on cuteness as a fashion accessory, but that always wears off.
Moses M From what I’ve read, they only did chassis tuning. Engine and gearbox were deemed good enough.
Actually it's a mini cooper.
it looks a bit like veloster
BMW produces such nonsense.
this car looks like a Toyota Corolla with a bmw badge
Very nice.
Looks like the body was designed to fit the mini frame and just looks off
52k for entry level, i would just get a trim 5 series
Change and please update the CHEEZY outdated early 80's jingle intro!
How does this compare to the 320i? Is the 320i competing with Mercedes A since 228i competes with CLA? How would the two compare in terms of driving dynamics?
Manufacturers also went to FWD for better traction in snow and ice.
Congrats, BMW just ruined your best car in your whole line up and turned it to a piece of junk. From the legendary m240 to now this.
they still make the 2 door coupe with RWD and the new 2 series 2 door coupe coming soon and will still be RWD based
If anyone wants to go back to IMO BMW's glory days, go check out Doug DeMuro's main channel.
The cla looks miles better than this Kia BMW.
It's not grand in any sense of the word (except price).
It's not a coupe.
It's not RWD, hence it's not a real BMW.
It's not a manual.
It's not a 2.8 litre engine.
I would take a Toyota Corolla over this. At least they're honest.
$52k for THAT!!!!! 😂
*FRONT WHEEL DRIVE.....BMW SOLD IT'S SOUL!*
There is honestly no reason to buy this. The 4WD adds weight !
$52,000 for this is ridiculous.
I just never saw the appeal with spending money on a car with virtually no utilitarian benefits whatsoever. In my book anybody behind that wheel over 25 years old - makes no sense to me
I just..... dont see why u would buy this when u could get a GTI....
Absolute garbage car. Horrible, ridiculous. The worst non-SUV in this price range by far.
Mgoblagulkablong better than A class in my book, but agreed it’s a crappy bmw
@@dailyrant4068 A Class is the same type of car, but what about the BMW is better? Every comparison test between them I saw the BMW lost.
I don't think it's awful, but it's seriously overpriced. Equipped like this it should be more like $45K.
@@markmiller3279 Take a look at Alex ratings. Every single tesr so far said the same things: subpar handling, subpar driving feel, poor comfort and cramped rear seats.
@@Mgoblagulkablong A class is super slow, they gave it a detuned engine so it doesn't compete with CLA (CLA has same engine but more power).
A class to me looks far uglier. CLA is much better looking.
the problem is not about been purist ,,the problem is this ,,it is really hard to find a good excuse to buy this car( a 2 grand coupe series with a FWD), other than been a badge fan. there is not reason to buy this car over a honda accord 2020 touring 2.0 turbo. the honda is faster ,,more roomy ,better equiped ,more reliable and better priced,, i think bmw did wrong here. if you are going to charge a premium price on a car ,it is necesary a good justification for that price. this bmw looks like a ford fiesta or a kia forte with a bmw badge.
ah...the phrase "2200 foot mountain pass" is satire, yes? How about 'through the hills, on the way to my home', instead? Seriously, that would be the more honest statement.
