Market and Model
Prices start at around £26,000 for the base 218i petrol 'Sport' variant; you'll need £1,350 more to add dual-clutch automatic transmission to it. The 220d diesel costs from around £31,500 in 'Sport' form. In either case, you'll need £2,500 more to add ritzier 'M Sport' trim. You'll need a budget of well over £37,000 for the M235i xDrive variant. As you'd expect for that kind of cash, all variants get an extremely high standard of spec, including full-LED headlights, sports seats and BMW's 'Live Cockpit Plus' package, which gives you an 8-8-inch control display with touch function.
'Sport'-spec models get 17-inch wheels, LED front foglights, front and rear parking sensors, and auto-dipping rear view mirror and two-zone climate control, plus BMW's 'Drive Performance Control' driving modes system. 'M Sport' variants meanwhile, are upgraded to 18-inch M light alloy Double-spoke rims. 'M Sport' and M235i variants also get the upgraded 'Live Cockpit Professional' infotainment package with its larger centre-dash 10.25-inch touchscreen and its "Hey BMW' 'Intelligent Personal Assistant' which will allow you to operate many of the car's major functions by merely speaking a command. Plus with this top trim level there's M Sport-tuned steering and suspension. And an aerodynamic body styling kit that re-styles both the front and rear bumpers.
Cost of Ownership
As you'd expect, the engineering here is prioritised towards improving efficiency. As a result, the base three cylinder 218i manages up to 47.1mpg (WLTP) and up to 114g/km (NEDC) in manual form. And the 220d delivers up to 57.6mpg (WLTP) and 110g/km (NEDC). The top M235i xDrive variant returns up to 37.2mpg (WLTP) and up to 153g/km (NEDC). On models with auto transmission, this car can be particularly efficient thanks to intelligent connectivity that enables the two auto gearboxes to adapt their shift strategy according to the planned route and driving situation.
If this model is equipped with Active Cruise Control, both transmissions will factor in the data from this system and the standard Navigation, to avoid unnecessary gear changes in a quick succession of bends. Across the range, efficiency is also aided by coasting and Auto Start Stop functions that take their cue from the data supplied by the navigation system, the front-mounted camera and the sensors for the optional driving assistance systems. The coasting function de-couples the powertrain from the transmission at cruising speeds when the car is running in either its 'Comfort' or 'ECO PRO' driving modes.
Summary
It's surprising that it took BMW so long to bring us this car. It's arch-rival, the Mercedes CLA, has after all been around since 2013 demonstrating the very real global demand for a compact saloon with a trendy coupe-like vibe. Whether you prefer BMW's take on this concept will be purely down to personal preference. It doesn't bring anything particularly new to this profitable sub-segment, but it has the required technology, style and sheer swagger to make the necessary impact.
If you were already thinking of buying the 1 Series hatch, we'd encourage you to also consider this Gran Coupe because it's essentially the same car without much of a practicality downside and a considerably more stylish feel. That in a nutshell sums up what this kind of car is all about. Late to this party BMW may be, but the brand has come ready to make an impact.

I just changed from Mercedes coupes to this BMW SERIES 2 GRAND COUPE. I BEEN A MERCEDES FAN SINCE THE 90S TIL NOW. MY HUSBAND THINK BMW IS A DRIVERS CAR. I HAVEN'T TRY BMW BEFORE, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TO DRIVE ONE. ALSO THIS CAR IS THE SAME LOOKING CAR WITH MY OLD MERC.
MY HUSBAND PUT EXTRA HEATING ON THE STEERING WHEEL, AND TOUCH HANDLE TO OPEN.

Not her perfectly judged review. I test drove one of these and was really impressed with the performance. It won’t offer the same drive as a rear wheel coupe but for a real world car it’s excellent. Cars have become huge. If you don’t want that but need 4 door practicality and a decent boot then this ticks all those boxes.
I love mine...love the performance, smooth drive, easy to control. I’m also loving the all many features they have on it.

Same, I had the 330i tuned, I actually found the power too much, I always ended up driving far too quickly and it got kind of dangerously addictive!! This is great as you can get max out the revs without having to worry about being out of control

Gotta say, these are one of those cars that look much better in real life. It deffo stands out with that ass and even the grills. Brilliant sporty look, amazing features with tech pack, great value for money i think and as a family, kids and mrs love it too.

I bought my 218i back in February, beautiful car love the design and interior. You don’t buy this for the power but the design is stunning in person, must get a black grille and the upgraded 19” wheels.

Well so far (a month in) and I have to say I understand why some folks love the BMW it is without dought a beautiful car, it drives just like a BMW should deffo feel engaged more with the road acceleration is responsive as well as the brakes. If I was to say anything about this car is if you use it in sports mode be prepared to make regular petrol stops but that being said it's worth it.
What's the rear headroom like? Would people around 5 foot 7 be alright?

I’ve just ordered a M235i GC with adaptive suspension and thus the 18inch wheels which I am informed is the best configuration for handling. Got to wait 6 months for delivery though!

She was delivered on the 1st September and only thing I’ve done is put some better quality registration plates on her and ceramic coated the better looking than in the brochure 18 inch alloys.
I’m going to get this car in 2/3 years 🤞🏿.

Whats your verdict?
I had a choice between the 2 gran coupé and a couple of other bmx models. I am 6ft and the minute I *tried* to fit myseld on the drivers's seat, I immediately know it doesn't matter how cool the car looks and feels - I simply couldn't fit. I mean many bmw's feel tight, but this is definitely not for big men; I would expect such a car to come out of Japan.
that doesn't make any sense becuz i'm 6"4 and i fit perfectly in it....lol even if the chair was far back i was so very comfortable! 😂
currently daily drive one and ya i wish backseat area was bigger but i love it nonetheless!
@@KareemKayy I had moved the chair both to the back and as low as possible, and my head was touching the ceiling... It's a pity, because I like its looks but it's definitely a small BMW. In the end I could fit in the X2 just barely, so I chose that one.

Yes and rear drive dynamic is showen on wet or snowy road..Ordinary driver will be faster in fwd car than rwd...

Based it on a Mazda I would say. Ford have done the same with the Focus and the latest 1 series is that dull they have started bolting things onto to it to draw some attention. No doubt they are a fantastic drive but god they are becoming dull. I have driven BMW for years. The F10 was fantastic, of which I have had 3 and currently on my 3rd f21 Shadow Edition. Either going to keep this one or look at the Audi A3 fastback because it looks like Audi are finally sorting the exterior of their cars out 🤔
