My M1 Air died in Dec 2022. It was 21 months old. It was not responding to any keys or trackpad. My local Apple store tried a new trackpad and connecting cable. They also tried replacing the complete topdeck keyboard etc. No success. They finally fixed it by replacing the complete logic board and touch ID button. They charged me £429 U.K. ( a discounted rate) They said that it only had a 12 month warranty. I purchased it online from an Apple Authorised Seller (Currys/PC World) in the UK. My Apple Store that they would have honoured the repair cost up to 24 months if it had been purchased direct from Apple, even though they also only sell with a 12 month warranty officially. It's working fine again but it was a disappointing introduction to Apple build quality. It is my first Apple product. My previous cheap Chinese PC laptop was still working perfectly with not even a loose key when I bought this M1 Air.
I’m sorry this happened to you, really sucks. But let me tell you something: all purchases in the EU carry a 3 YEAR WARRANTY from the seller (not the brand! The seller). Obvious exceptions apply: food, clothes and consumable parts like batteries and car tires. I haven’t been in the UK since Brexit but I remember them having 5 YEAR warranty from the seller! I had this same issue occur with my own MacBook Air M1 and when I contacted Apple; they were confused upon this issue; with the laptop not responding at all. I had the same solution given with my Mac’s motherboard, display, and complete keyboard being changed. I had purchased Apple Care luckily and my Mac got fixed for free.

I'm cheap, so I got the base M1 Air (8GB/256GB) on sale. I've had it for well over a year, and no problems at all. The 8GB has not been a problem. I use it for email, spreadsheets, web browsing, note taking, and web development. I don't use it for video editing or anything like that. The main limitation I've noticed is that it might start to slow down if you have a large number of browser tabs open, say thirty. That's not a problem for me, because I don't like having lots of tabs open because it becomes cumbersome keeping track of them. The 256GB has not been a limitation at all. I have all the software I want loaded on there (and then some), including Xcode, Android Studio, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Node, and IDLE, and still have lots of room. The story would probably be different if I had lots of video files and photos.
I don’t consider any purchase to be cheap as you should only purchase whatever you can afford. I use the same model as yours with 8gb ram and 256gb SSD. But unlike you i rarely use it. At times i use it to watch a movie or go through some emails or very rarely browse the web for shopping. So basically i have never pushed it to its limit and will never be able to too😅. Btw can you please tell me how is your experience with macos ventura 13.2 as i have not updated to it yet.
I am thinking to get mba m1 base model now for web development and design for $800. It’s not the best machine but it is the most comfortable option considering my needs and the money I got,
Exactly! M1 pro and M2 air have the same price but sacrificing a little bit of performance and fan just for some fancy new designs? Please I’m not that boogie.
The base M1 Air continues to be a best buy. Here's why - You are rarely punished for buying Apple's most inexpensive laptop. It's zippy, has a great screen, sounds great, is dead silent, and lasts forever on a charge. And I haven't even mentioned the price yet...
@@donkey1271 but if price isnt an issue would not the m1 pro be the best buy? Or is price too much of an influencer to overcome? Meaning: set aside the price, the pro is clearly the better machine but once you add price as a negotiator it clearly makes the air the best machine and buy? Make sense?
reason I ask is I bought the m1 pro cause money wasnt really an issue. But my buddies are almost cultish about their air it makes me second guess my buy.
@@dfull31I wouldn’t worry about second guessing your purchase. Each MacBook has its own advantages. The M1 MBA gives a lot of bang for the buck but the Pro is more capable for certain workflows. If your happy with your Mac, stay happy.
Thanks for the video. As a new MacBook owner I've honestly grown a bit too paranoid of my M1 Air dying prematurely, so this video really helped. Looking forward to the 2025 update!
@@eriknelson5585 compromises must be given somewhere, otherwise price would increase... Besides , if there is an update available that fixes it, is that a major issue?
@@Tech-geeky why should increase? The cost of an aditional memory chip would be less than 10$ Do you think all issues are software related and apple never does anything wrong?
As an early adopter of USB C (Nexus 5X and MacBook 12) those issues aren't new and Benson Leung did some amazing work on USB C cables. I've always only bought established brand cables and hubs since then!
The screen cracking happened to my partners M1 Air. They said even a paper clip between the screen when closing it could cause it to crack. I could not believe it, because there was no clear signs of damage to the exterior of the laptop. $700 to replace the entire screen assembly and now the hinge is so stiff you have to cleave it open. Knowing it could have been caused by a defect makes my blood boil!
Screens are cracking even without doing anything. It's like, you're working with your macbook and it just cracked in front of your eyes.... It's more like a manufacturing defect than misuse.
my screen cracked randomly just like this describes. The guy at the Apple Store told me I broke it and would have to pay. I insisted a the said it would not work. long story short, apple fixed it and never billed me. My computer was pristine and no impact point on the top of the screen bc I used my MacBook 95% with the screen closed in a dock. I think that apple must know a which Macs/serial numbers must have the defect and they just replace them.
@ 8:48 I would like to point out a 3rd option which is an HUGE peeve of mine: Best Buy (and others - Amazon included) refusing to offer higher options. I specifically wanted to leverage my BB credit for a top line M1 16” pro instead of opening a new financing line at Apple. Welp, unfortunately, BB never carried above 16 gig RAM /1tb ssd. I’ve noticed Amazon low-balling configs like this as well. Extremely annoying.
I've had mine since July 2021. Early on I noticed it would get really hot using Microsoft teams but now that most applications have been made for apple silicon so I haven't had any heating issues or any other problems.
My refurbished 16/512 MBA was bought in summer 2021 and it’s still doing perfectly fine. Tbh the battery life has never been great for me but I tend to push it with a million tabs, coding, and photoshop (making gifs). A light user would not push it that hard, but that’s why I’m gunning for a MBP in the near future.
I'm using an external tb4 ssd for most programs and my pictures/docs/whatever are stored on my nas. The ssd will outlive the rest of the notebook with ease. To me, external ssds are a must for the new arm based macs
I just traded a old BMX for a guy’s 2020 MacBook M1 Air. Come to find out he never used it & upgraded to a iMac. I just looked at the battery and health is at 100% and it has 4 cycles on it! It’s brand new. Just updated to Ventura. My last mac was a late 2010 MacBook unibody. Now I’m nervous on what to do
My M1 Macbook Screen cracked without being hit or damaged in any way. I'm still using it but I have to connect it to an external monitor because it's too expensive to fix
For anyone wanting to purchase an M1 Mac of any kind I really do prefer 16GB, it can get pricey and I understand but 8GB with normal internet browsing can get filled up quite quickly. 16GB really adds more breathing room especially if your using external applications like adobe products but the M1s still remain really solid machines

Thank you for the creating this video. I got a M1 MacBook Air at the end of 2021 and it is my favorite laptop ever. I was able to get the base model for $799 at Micro Center. It has been so reliable, great battery, and speedy. Other than 60hz decent screen, I have no issues with the laptop.

My T2 MacBook suffered kernel panic issues in January 2023, and my AppleCare expired one month earlier. I purchased an extension of the AppleCare as a result of the kernel panics, then brought the Mac in for repair the following week after all efforts to repair the kernel panics failed.
Completely disagreed with screen issues. I suffered from one two months ago it was repaired for free( still in warranty). the problems caused the right side to flicker and not work. m1 mac has many problems but they vary from user to user. turns out the screen issue is rather common at least that's what the service center guy said to me.
Hey, you are right this is one of the first videos I saw when looking up a cracked mac screen! This is the second time this has happened to me! It is in the same area as last time and I didn't put any pressure on the mac. I closed it normally, went to school, and came back to a hairline-looking crack on the bottom left of my screen
You forgot non-working palm rejection, Touch ID wake from deep sleep, WIFI on battery that turns off when screen goes to sleep, audio crackling/popping, etc.
The idea alone of charging a MacBook Air or Pro via a USB-C hub has never sat well with me. I just don't like it, no matter what software update Apple releases or third party apps are recommended. No Sir!
My M1 Air has been solid. I recently had the replace the USB board as one died, but the Self Service Repair store made this easy, and cost me very little. Truly the best all-round laptop ever made
People who are short on a budget often do 4k editing on cheap windows laptop, that doesn't have enough ram, although it makes the hardware slower(barely useable) during editing and takes a lot of time during rendering, the laptop/ssd doesn't just die.
I own a base M1 MBA and my only recommendation is to PLEASE take AT LEAST the 16GB RAM model if you’re planning on using it for light gaming or occasional editing.
I don't know about AAA fps games, but my M1 base model handles World of Warcraft Dragonflight fairly easily at recommended settings. I play this game daily at my workplace whenever my boss isn't looking.
That's because M1 uses 128GB X 2 SSD chips, where as M2 got 256GB X 1 chip. M1 can read/write two chips simultaneously which effectively doubled the throughput. If you purchase a M2 512GB version, there will be 256GB X 2 chips in it, and that will be even faster than the M1.
After updating my M1 MBA to the latest OS, the wifi could take a couple of minutes to reconnect after waking up from overnight sleep and is unstable for the first half hour or so. Sometimes I even need to turn off and on the wifi to regain connection. Going on for over a month now and very frustrating.
Rookie question here let’s say you had two external drives transferring through usb c because of the apple silicon is the data transferring through the internal ssd before arrive on the external destination?
Watching this on my early 2015 MacBook air that still serves it purpose (report writing, making presentations, excel, emailing and internet browser). Wake me up when the M5 arrives
I just looked into my old mini's DIY Fusion drive's ssd, which failed. I ran High Sierra, ssd was X400 128GB, which has TBW of 72. SMART tells that real NAND writes were 111TB! (Actual data writes were 63TB, so there's quite much internal writing to keep bits "fresh".) The ssd was powered on little less than 10k hours. Mini has 16GB of RAM and I used it about 2-3 years with nothing extreme, probably the most RAM hungry was Chrome, which I usually end up having over 100 tabs, before I save all tabs to Session Buddy and start again with just few tabs. 9.9k hours with 111TB makes average of 11.4GB PER HOUR as AVERAGE! (But just 3.2Mbit/s for comparison.) MacOS has swapped like crazy for a long time and I do hate to use soldered storage. To conclusion, escpecially now that you can DIY all external Fusion drives (as a system drive) in APFS with desktop macs, it is wise to have a big ssd side. Not for speed, but for longevity.
I got a deal on a 512 GB SSD/8 GB MacBook Pro M1 13" for $500 USD and it has been a phenomenal introduction to Mac OS. It was in mint condition and the battery only had 13 charge cycles on it. My workflow is mostly MS Word for writing, a few tabs in chrome, and Apple Music. I also close those programs down for whenever I watch movies, use emulators, or use Moonlight to stream from my gaming rig. It's been nothing but a joy to use.
@@daultimate100 Right? I got very lucky. I bought it from a pawn shop but I checked the serial number before I did, everything looked good. I was shocked how little it was used before I bought it.
You've done a good job and I thank you for that, but we have to talk about a battery that is rapidly losing its overall capacity. My macbook air m1 is now at 88% with about 200 charge cycles. This is a bit frustrating given that i don't use my macbook much and it was usually used for study
As soon as i’ve seen your comment i checked my system infos 😅. 203 cycles and 94% for me, hopefully these are good numbers. Purchased exactly one year ago with 16gb 256gb

I don't have the Air, but instead the base model M1 MacBook Pro (8 gb RAM, 256 gb SSD). And even with its 8 gb of RAM it has been a rock solid and very quick laptop for my daily use. The Air would have performed the same here for sure. Most people won't need an M2 Max or something similar for their daily stuff. If they are like me, the M1's will last for many years to come.

Base model M1 MBA user here, after being paranoid about this memory swap issue I did some investigating: My SSD usage so far: 168.9 TB written (91% health on DriveDx, no noticeable issues YET) I asked a few friends to check their usage, all M1 MBA users too. Very surprising results across the board. Their usage so far: 1. 145.3 TB written, 91% health 2. 95.4 TB written, 94% health 3. 121.5 TB written, 95% health Software updates have indeed fixed this issue, or at least made it a whole lot easier on the SSD. Between myself and the others, we all used Google Chrome/FireFox. I have since switched to Safari a few months ago and my usage has only gone up +-100gb. Chrome was definitely the reason for almost 170TB in my case! Hoping to still get a good few years out of this machine, I have seen a Twitter user with more than 600 TB written without any issues, but the paranoia remains...
This is actually due to browser caching. All of the multimedia content you watched on Chrome (so every UA-cam video) was being written to your SSD. Firefox too. Combined with all the other miscellaneous writes it can add up. Safari doesn’t cache to the SSD which is why it stopped. This caching decreased significantly however with software updates. Regardless, these 256GB SSDs have no problem doing over 500 TBW with ease in many situations. I wouldn’t be worried at all.
@@CreatedTech That makes a whole lot more sense! We all do watch an endless amount of UA-cam so that’s definitely why it’s so high. Thanks for the feedback! At this rate I’ll probably never even reach 200 TBW
I still have my M1 13" Pro - Base model, still does what its intended for, in my case web development and design, though i sometime encounter a lag, but that doesn't mean its the end of the road and due time for an upgrade.

Had my m1 MBA for little over a year now and never had even half a problem, got it with everything base except 16gb of ram instead of 8. Used it for Web coding, photo editing, illustration, 3d modelling in rhino and now I'd be curious to test it on small or medium/high quality renders to see what it can do. Since I have a built pc at home I didn't need a higher end laptop but a portable and pretty powerful one and this is the best choice I could take. So yea I'd like to switch to a 14 pro bit just for the design, not regretting anything (except the excessively sharp edges smh)
@@lukasalan8682 I'm my opinion yes. If with web coding you mean like html/css (idk javascript since I never used it yet) not a problem, these systems use very cleverly the memory they got. For illustrator and photoshop I can say it never gave me problems, especially photoshop which I've always known to be heavier than illustrator. For the price I really don't know if there is anything better even with the quality of materials and portability. Highly recommend. Edit: I'd obviously recommend to have at least a more pumped up version, like 16gb ram and 512gb of storage, first one for performance and the second one because it's better have more memory if you don't want to always bring an external ssd with you (I have an extrernal 500gb ssd since I always carry the laptop with me in the backpack with everything).
@@jaystaly3421 I'd honestly wouldn't be able to tell you about that software because I never used it and even if I'd try to run it and tell you I wouldn't know how to deeply use it to give you feedback, sorry mate :( Anyway I'd recommend a Pro model or a windows laptop (one of those would be the Asus G14, I really like that model for both performance and portability since it's "only" a 14")

Sorry, but you mention RAM several times, when to my understanding M1 Macs use "unified memory". More than just an Apple marketing term, it seems the unified memory in Apple silicon's Mac ARM architecture is built differently than traditional RAM, which is why 8GB of it on a MBP may - at least on certain tasks - outperform even 32 of RAM on an intel Macs. (PS- To be clear, I'm certainly no expert, and make this comment as a mere consumer, from what I've read, and from my experience with my M1 MacBook Pro...)
A year late but that statement is full of shi#%. Its just marketing words for non tech people (like AI). Saying 8 gb of RAM is the same as 32 is just crazy. Even a gaming laptop from 2018 with 16 gb ram would destroy an M1 with 8 gb.
Hi thanks for the video. Let’s discuss some backup plans in case of unexpected internal SSD failure. If I have a Time Machine backup on external drive (let’s call it drive X), and assume that my internal drive suddenly died, can I boot from another external drive and retrieve a full backup from drive X? I’m thinking instead of throwing my Macbook, I will keep booting from an external drive and will live with it this way till I replace or repair my Mac. But is it a possible solution?
I still believe that owning an M1 MacBook Air is like the one chance we've had to pull the rabbit out of the hat on Apple. The base M1 Air continues to be a best buy. Here's why - You are rarely punished for buying Apple's most inexpensive laptop. It's zippy, has a great screen, sounds great, is dead silent, and lasts forever on a charge. And I haven't even mentioned the price yet...
And if you can grab one from Costco, they tend to sell them with 3 years of Applecare+
@@markholle3450 yup. Agreed. I love it
Thanks for the video. As a new MacBook owner I've honestly grown a bit too paranoid of my M1 Air dying prematurely, so this video really helped. Looking forward to the 2025 update!
Yes, Apple slowing the base SSD speeds on all M2 macs is ridiculous!
Same! I just got my Macbook Air M1 8GB/256GB December 2022! I was also worried about defects.
@@eriknelson5585 compromises must be given somewhere, otherwise price would increase... Besides , if there is an update available that fixes it, is that a major issue?
@@Tech-geeky why should increase? The cost of an aditional memory chip would be less than 10$
Do you think all issues are software related and apple never does anything wrong?
@@Teluric2 No... Apple has hardware issues too, it just i've never noticed anything with mine.. new or Refurbished.
I still think it's crazy that Apple sells a "MacBook PRO" with only 8GB combined RAM in 2023. That is really really low, not "pro" at all.
Leaving a paperclip on the keyboard isn't the brightest idea either...
I picked one up for $800 on sale for back to school in 2021. Great machine. No issues.
I use my Air all day and the battery often lasts me 2 days
16gb RAM model, bought 2 months after release. Still going strong.
My M1 Pro has been a fantastic machine since June 2021. I only regret not getting the 16 GB
I have not noticed any problems with my 8GB model at all but I really don't push it.

MBA M1: still an incredible laptop for many years to come
Thank you for the creating this video. I got a M1 MacBook Air at the end of 2021 and it is my favorite laptop ever. I was able to get the base model for $799 at Micro Center.
It has been so reliable, great battery, and speedy. Other than 60hz decent screen, I have no issues with the laptop.
12:33 I was sitting in my bed doing a college essay on my MacBook air 2020 13 inch and I clicked on the trackpad and the LCD on the bottom left popped and now I cant see the left side or bottom edges of my laptop screen. Glad to hear I'm not the only one this happened to
I just learned that I was safe by charging my M1 pro directly instead of connecting the charger to the hub. Wow! that's a relief!
Imagine bashing users for wanting to use their 8GB Macs for video editing.
It's apple's fault for providing pathetic amount of RAM in base models.
My Mac M1 Air screen cracked out of thin air. I don't get how. It was open suddenly a black strip just appeared before camera.
I have a 14 inch M1 Pro and the screen is really soft and once tiny bits of things get stuck inside it starts to get tacky fast is it just me?
The idea alone of charging a MacBook Air or Pro via a USB-C hub has never sat well with me. I just don't like it, no matter what software update Apple releases or third party apps are recommended. No Sir!
Bought a total of 4. Never had any issues. Thanks for your video
had my mac book air since 2021, not had any problems and love it, its used every day all day
My M1 Air has been solid.
14:07 If you render a video or play a game on a mac, it will heat up to significant temperatures.
I own a base M1 MBA and my only recommendation is to PLEASE take AT LEAST the 16GB RAM model if you’re planning on using it for light gaming or occasional editing.
How do game on Mac?
I don't know about AAA fps games, but my M1 base model handles World of Warcraft Dragonflight fairly easily at recommended settings. I play this game daily at my workplace whenever my boss isn't looking.
There are, the issue is its ssd is actually faster than the M2, so no upgrading to M2 for me.
Only the 256gb m2 is slower. The 512gb m2 is faster.
M1 MB Air, 16, 2TB used every day for all things graphics since Nov 2020. No issues.
How is your swap usage with the 16gb while editing
After updating my M1 MBA to the latest OS, the wifi could take a couple of minutes to reconnect after waking up from overnight sleep and is unstable for the first half hour or so. Sometimes I even need to turn off and on the wifi to regain connection. Going on for over a month now and very frustrating.
How easy will it be to replace the battery in a few years when they start dying?
My MacBook is as good as new. AFTER 2 YEARS.
Still gives a strong 12-13 hours with 89% battery health. BEST BUY EVER! ❤
4 or 8 ram?
I just looked into my old mini's DIY Fusion drive's ssd, which failed. I ran High Sierra, ssd was X400 128GB, which has TBW of 72. SMART tells that real NAND writes were 111TB! (Actual data writes were 63TB, so there's quite much internal writing to keep bits "fresh".)
The ssd was powered on little less than 10k hours.
My mac died within 2.3 yrs. Authorized servic center told me to change logic bord worth 40k.
@shivamurmu5182 without applecare+
Dammm. For $500 that was a steal.
That battery health indicator is misleading and shouldn’t be relied upon. Most of the time it’s not even accurate.

When you say not bad, how much swap do you generally use?
Apologies for all the q’s I really want to buy a MacBook but just worried about swap
My M1 MacBook pro 13" is so slow for video editing now.
Don't buy m1 Mac why ? I have also buy the same and now regrating beacause after 5 months mac died and from the first day I am facing Static Charges which is pretty anoying and the customer care said it is accepted behavier and the repair cost you all know !!!!!
I have had ssds die on my with a lot lower than the advertised tbw. A Kingston 120gb SSD died after just a few months.
Is 8gb enough for basic uses? How much memory swap does it uses?
ayo that's my reddit post there at 0:27! Btw been a fan watching you since your release of vids about the m1 MacBook Air, really bought it becoz of ur good reviews. Feeling happy to be in the vid even for the shortest amount of time :)
Base model M1 MBA user here, after being paranoid about this memory swap issue I did some investigating:
My SSD usage so far: 168.9 TB written (91% health on DriveDx, no noticeable issues YET)
I asked a few friends to check their usage, all M1 MBA users too. Very surprising results across the board.
Their usage so far:
1. 145.3 TB written, 91% health
2. 95.4 TB written, 94% health
3. 121.5 TB written, 95% health
Software updates have indeed fixed this issue, or at least made it a whole lot easier on the SSD.
Just checked mine too, 116 TB written. Guess I’m getting more RAM next time 😅
This is actually due to browser caching.
How do you check the swap memory usage?
I still have my M1 13" Pro - Base model, still does what its intended for, in my case web development and design, though i sometime encounter a lag, but that doesn't mean its the end of the road and due time for an upgrade.
My macbook air m1 is great, but upgrading to ID Ventura has reduced the battery life compared to what it was.

Hello, do you think the 8GB would run smoothly for web coding, illustrator, photoshop?

I think I'll order the M1 Pro 14. What do you think?
I fried my M1 MacBook Air Logic Board, used a aftermarket dongle with pass through, might have been it, who knows. I ended up having to pay for a new logic board swap and no issues since. This happened after the update.

You can also double the lifetime by updating SSD to 512GB as I did. It does the same trick as updating memory from 8GB to 16GB.
16/512 seems like the perfect configuration
@@Breadfan00 it’s what I have even though I don’t need that many ram i wanted to-be stress free😁

It's so freakin' amazing at a price point that is nowhere near to that of the M2's, etc..., and it still accomplishes anything that you'd need it to. It's been my go-to for like 2 years already, and still running pretty smooth.

@@CrisGarcia6 the newer MacBook Pros that were made in 2021- have the notch (14-16 in’ I believe). Off the top of my head I think it’s the base price upward. The 2020 has the og screen they used in 2019.
Your videos are excellent. Thankyou

With the killer USB C hubs. I owned a 2018 HP Envy x360 and used a Dell USB-C monitor which supported 65w charging at the same time. Super convenient. Used for months with no issue then one day the usb c port died, i unplugged and kept trying and then bang, a loud click noise and the computer was dead, didn’t respond to power, charger nothing. I think the monitor fried the motherboard but I never expected this as i thought there would be some failsafe. I still use a 2021 HP spectre x360 with no issue with the monitor but my replacement 2018 HP Envy x360 USB C port recently died with the monitor again, I am not plugging the monitor in again because I am scared it will fry the laptop, but something tells me it’s either a faulty failsafe on those model of computers or something is wrong with the wattage of the dell monitor.
Note: I only recommend official USB C accessories, meaning if you have a HP laptop, buy the HP hubs and accessories, sure others will work but many are not to the same standard as the official OEM products. Same with Apple computers
I question this review and comments. There’s something not right. I had an Apple Mac for 8 years without issue. I had the M1 3 months before the screen damaged from non-existent pressure. The glass doesn’t break. It breaks the LCD behind the glass. It’s not built for purpose. The screens is made from confetti.
To those who bought it early will be extremely satisfied. Even today the upgraded m2 is no where worth an upgrade, also more expensive 🤣
