Why are After Effects artists freaking out about Skew? | Insane new time-saving tool

- MoGraph Twitter has been buzzing about this new tool since it launched. Does Skew live up to the hype? And what does it even do?
Skew is an incredible new After Effects tool that makes it comically easy to space your layers out in any way you can imagine. It's got, in our opinion, one of the best UI's of any Extension we've ever seen, and it's an incredible time-saver.

Waddya think? Do you see Skew fitting into your workflow? Any other tools you can't live without?
That "select every" feature is super nice! Combining that with "Labels 3" from aescripts would be very nice
It's nice, but in Rift you can do this to keys, not only layers
@@mica.motion I was going to say, making this only touch layers in their entirety is going to create extra thinking and workarounds for underlying keyframes.
Cavalry App does things like this natively...and is stable...and doesn't belong to Evil Adobe
I've been using pt_ShiftLayers to do this sort of thing for years. As a scriptUI panel it's not a nice a UI though. There's some great touches in there.
I imagine this is the kind of thing adobe would build into after effects if they were into innovating and not just collecting that monthly payment.
My thoughts. Why won't they at least take what others figured out with these 3rd party extensions, scripts, plugins and implement that
If anything, I'd take that show all layers feature
They’re too busy buying out the competition and ruining our chances of innovation
@@imiy I completely agree! Instead we get coloured key frames…
I mean... it's sort of been a part of AE for ages (RMB click on selected layers (order in which you're selecting matters) -> Keyframe assistant -> sequence layers) but it's nowhere near as adjustable as this plugin makes it.
Rift is free and does about 95% of this. Granted, this is a much easier to follow UI. Also, once layers are colored, you can already right click and "select label group" in AE to select layers of the same color.
Rift is not free
@@bazz6932 "name your own price" so, nice to contribute, but not required
The UI of skew is so much better rift has complicated look and is hard to follow, again if you learn the UI of rift you can use that but skew seems much better
@@bazz6932 You name your own price, so it's free if you want it to be.
@@irakligujabidze2344 After 7+ years of using it pretty consistently, I'm used to the Rift UI at this point. Skew looks like a nice time saver tho, and I'll probably pick it up.
14:11 Alternatively, once you have the labels colored the way you want, you can click on the layer label (the color box on the left), which will open up a dropdown menu, and then you can click "Select Label Group" to highlight all layers of the same color. Saves 1 extra click.
Wow, what a great intuitive tool. Would be great to see these types of tools implemented natively
Knowing Adobe as we do, I guess it won't be until after effects 2030, at the latest! hehe
I really like the way you guys integrate your paid services into free videos. Really respectful to the viewer and provides a quality service.
I use a Script UI called Motion Tools. You can "stagger" layers, keyframes ect. And the tool does so much more. Anchorpoint position for layers and inside shapelayers, auto easy in/out ect ect and is free
Yeah I use that one too. It's handy when you have to offset multiple layers. That being said, the UI for skew here is incredible.
Yeah, I use Motion Tools all the time. The only thing Skew really has on it is the easing of offsets, but for $45? Doesn't seem worth it to me.
Also, MDS's Motion Tools lets you edit the offsets of groups of KEYFRAMES, not just whole layers.
nice recommendation👍, except for is not free, as far as i can tell it cost 40$ 😭
@@benstefanowitsch7729 yea I saw they ask money for it now. It was free when I got it, it was included with a course
Basically Rift but more User Friendly
This tool looks beautifully made, but it's incredible to me that a feature as simple as this isn't already part of AE.
This is amazing. I am blown away by how useful, well-thought through, and well designed it is.
I wish the native ae ui was more like this, it feels really outdated.
Great tool, I haven't seen something as useful and well made since flow.
By the way: if you just want to select one label group, you can do this by right clicking the layers color too!
Can they rebuild AE from scratch using that UI? Please 😭
Awesome video Joey. I saw some things on Skew but you've convinced me to get it. That last feature you showed is gold.
Thak you for explaining what the new tool is in under 20 seconds of the video starting.
Most channels would do an AD placement and go off topic for 30mins. Fantastic!
Finally picked this up and it's immediately a time saver and like you said the UX is so clean. Thanks a bunch.
Fantastic tutorial, keep up the great videos!
Skew. Instant buy.
Wow this is something BIG!
Thank you sooo much for sharing such a good tutorial
Love this channel! Liked and subbed!
Bro the liquify portion was pretty mind blowing
My eyes were getting wider and wider and wider. That color selection tool omg
Awesome. Great explanation! Thanks!
Great video! Thank you!
GAME CHANGER!! this is how AE should work in the first place, I wish Skew's developers would be AE developers because this is the kind of stuff we need and Adobe doesn't truly understand its users, they're too old school.
Been using PT shift layers for years, it’s been a great tool, but it’s time to upgrade. 🎉 But by far the most powerful toolset you’ll ever use is Motion 4 from Mt. Mograph. It does EVERYTHING, and a bag of chips.
These are my fave type of add-ons. It saves time, provides creative flexibility rather than baked-in presets (which I find amateur and restrictive). Best of all, no dependency issues if you need to transfer the project to someone else.
I don't even use AE much but looking at Skew's incredibly well-designed UI made me feel like I should get into it more
I've been using this and it's amazing. Super handy like Flow or Keystone.
omg this is great. Thank you!!! I'm taking the 10 days free class right away too
Enjoy it!
THANK YOU IT WORKED. I AM SO HAPPY.
that's sick. It reminded me of Lazy initially but the layer selection features at the end really stood out for me, looks great. the only issue i would say would be the size of the extension window itself in the gui. Hopefully it works as well when it's shrunk down a bit
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING ME THIS OMG
This is mind blowing! Well done Skew 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
looks amazing!
This would have saved me HOURS of work in the past.
OMG!! This is so amazing!
Wow! Never heard of this, but I could see how useful it can be.
Really love the new intro and how you get into the content. Awesome work, SOM
Way useful. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this one. 🤓
This is awesome!!!
My walkaway from this is that I now want to be able to scale layers in the timeline!
There is an extension to add frames in the midlle of timeline for all the layers at same time like we did with Flash hitting F5?
ITS REALLY WORKED LOL THANK YOU DUDE
The music is dope. The tool is great. Good job!
You are best ;) Thank You !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man, what a great tool! Thanks for the perfect walk-through. But whats really great is the cat thumbnail!
My thumbnail game is NO JOKE.
@@joeykorenman lol :D
Amazing! Makes me want to learn AFX!
I would love skew, but I do LONG video animations. Is there a way to make skew work with in/out points instead of clip start?
2022 y me funciono perfecto, muchisimas gracias!
This tool is surely gonna be the most essential element in the future days.
ohhhh... I love the scale timeline button😍😍
Yeah it’s so ridiculous AE doesn’t have that after all this time
It’s awesome im gonna try to get it
This is cool!
mind blowing
Very useful😇
Hi Teacher, I am using "Create Nulls from paths". I have a problem when I am applying them and they don't lie precisely in that place. Could you please help me with that? Thanks Amrit
The fact that a Billion Dollar Company can't get their shit together and actually make such simple yet important tools by themselves gets me raging. 🤬
Adobe has literally never made anything. They just wait for something cool to come out, then buy it, and then ruin it later with stupid updates.
@@stylesraw Which is why we have 200+ "effects" that are actually mostly just basic tools. Most people who use AE have no clue how much you can do there, because so many features are hidden in obscurely named effects.
I'm so excited I will buy 3 copies! 😁
i just saw the picture and ... WTH . tHIS IS HUGE .
Oh my god... it's beautiful
hello, I try to enroll this free course but some error occurs. Can you help me solve this issue?
What a simple--but very useful--tool
the locked timeline feature would be my most used for sure
"HEY! Here's this awesome thing you can't live without. That'll be $45"
What a quality and comprehensive overview of what I can't afford.
Seriously though, thanks for the vid. Very good. Just a little salty about everything coming at a cost.
Ty I got my first divine because of you
im gonna get it, im sold
Oh I thought they were finally adding this to AE but nope of course! Been using Mister Horse Animation Composer's 'transition shifter' function for years now. Works fine.
Wow. Super helpful. Thanks Joey for everything. #batchmotion
I use Motion Tools from Motion Design School, which besides from a bunch of other extremely useful tools, has a basic skew function as well. absolutely one of my most used tools, so I can see this being super useful as well. but one thing motion tools seems to have over skew is that the offsetting works on keyframes too.
How can I get those text layers to be perfectly equidistant apart?
Ey guys how can I enable this tool is not showing up in my extensions panel ? I currently have after effects 2022
adobe needs to develop more and more features like this.
But there's Transition Shifter that comes free with Animation Composer, which been around for years does almost the same
Not fair of them teasing us with a cool new time-line on the side while we still haven't to do everything in the old one.
Noooice!:)
Pretty cool, very well designed plugin. In terms of workflow plugins like this, I think Motion3 is the best i've ever seen and does some similar things. Would be cool if school of motion reviewed all the great mt mograph plugins. I have no affiliation lol, just love em
What the diff between motion 3 and motion 4? (Someone mentioned 4 above you)
Does this set layer in-points to fractions of frames? It seemed like all the layers were snapping to nearest whole frame number? That'd be a deal breaker for me. Would be great to see this implemented for selected keyframes as well.
Pain the timing ! I never thought someone would say that hahaha
I straight up hit purchase at 2:38. You could stop the video there, that's all i needed to purchase is!
This could be really cool to use in hand drawn animation with sequencing layers
Bought skew last week, stoked to see SOM putting the dev on. Saved at least a few hours already, I think skew is heavily underpriced.
we have the same in blender it is called commotion and it is absolutely brilliant
Skew is something Adobe should be buying with big money
This is bananas
Wow!😍🤩🥰
Lazy 2 is pretty similar but this seems more intuitive ux wise. I would buy this if I didn't already have lazy 2
same
Can Adobe just implement this in the root application?! This is so small, but the workflow is 100x faster! Great vid!
this just makes me appreciate how Cavalry works, cause with the stagger behavior you can do this super easy
speaking about cavalry, how has it been evolving lately? I stopped paying attention in 2019
@@chfr theres been active development, the discord is the best place to stay up to date. Theres a lot of cool stuff been added and coming up like all sorts of filters and effects, rubber hose and skinning of 2d meeshes for characters, other stuff too. Also ppl been making good tutorials for it, one of my faves is pepko motion.
Im sure its come a long way since 2019, im learning both after effects and cavalry coming from a 3d background looking to expand, and finding cavalry more appealing for most things. It doesnt have quite the level of effects as AE, but just working in it and making things happen is much smoother, so im preferring it.
It has a much different mindset about things than after effects, more similar to procedural tools, but packaged like AE
@@TB-cq3tl I see, thanks for the info, I've been learning fusion on my end to try something that's not layer-based
@@chfr ya fusion is great, likewise too with resolve to do the E D I T S. Imo cavalry can do layer based stuff but excels with vector based motion graphics and manipulation, visualization, etc. Working with keyframes and graphs is also v nice. Theres so much good software out there these days
That's cool! Also check out Rift on AEScripts, if this tool feel over-engineered for your purposes.
I tried to enroll to the Mograph 10 days course but when opening it via the dashboard, I get a HTTP 404 page :(
What I do not understand is how features like this (and even more like similar things on keyframe-level or selection sets etc) are not inside after effects features since ten years. And how users seem to be fine with it. If it wasn't for teamwork reasons, I'd switched to c4d or blender for my 2d-animations already...
Blows my mind. If more people spoke out, there would be consequences, but people would rather ridicule a person who didn't cover their bases rather than the person that took advantage of it. P.S. I'm LOVING Blender lately :)
Dude how do you use after effects with a magic mouse lmao. Truly a superman
I didn't realize how odd this was, ha!
Is that a Roland electric drum set in the background? 🤘
This is an Absolute KILLER of a plugin
However, I always used Rift for tasks like these, and until skew has the option to manipulate keyframes, I'll be using both, instead of just Skew :p
Sooo trueeee
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Animation Composer from Mister Horse already do this, doesn't it? I use it for over 1 year now and don't have this problem anymore and it's totally free.
Not quite. Good little extension, but I’ve never seen this inside of it. Best AE toolset is Motion 4 from Mt. Mograph. it doesn’t just about everything.
uhh. :DI really hope you haven't adjusted every layer by hand so far :D
select layers -> right click -> keyframe assistant -> sequence layers (check overlap (timeline length - 4/5/6frames))
Sure, it's not as powerful as skew. But most of the time totally fine.
If you'd combine all the plugins and scripts that have been written for After Effects to make it suck less you'd have a pretty good design/animation software.
this literally could have saved me ages on a stinger i made for streaming
Probably best deal on market😀
I don't even use After Effects and I'm excited about this 😂
