- ■ PERU, CUSCO: There's local cuisine and then there's ultra local cuisine. In Peru you can't get anything more quintessential local than grilled Guinea Pig, or Cuy as they call it. Always up for an exotic meal I decided to take Cyrus up on his offer to show me his favorite restaurant for indulging in this questionable Peruvan delicacy..... Don't worry, it tasted even better than chicken he kept saying! So off we went. I've had Cobra heart and Scorpion claws I thought so how bad could this Cuy be? 🤔
Update: On March 23rd 2021, Cyrus got his official license and now he is an official tour guide! 🥰🙏

I am not a vegetarian either, but I once had some guinea-pigs as pets when I was a child and I cannot imagine somebody could have eaten it. Still, I believe they are tasty and who knows, maybe one day being in Peru I will have an opportunity to try it.

BEERCOASTERSpl Guinea pigs are the same as chickens because they eat vegetables and it’s healthy to eat. So the meat is pretty good actually. Guinea pigs also come from South America so they were eaten long before they became “pets”.

It's funny how people react to guinea pig. Rabbit and squirrel used to be some of the main meats eaten in the US. Small game is much more practical than dealing with large animals without the expense and time of preservation and no refrigeration.

Peruvians also drink frogs juice ,they prepare it in blenders at street markets ( Trujillo region ,north of the country) and grilled cats which they serve with smashed potatoes...This happens in the city of Huara which belongs to Ancash region (north of Lima).

Greetings, new to the channel here, I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. Just wanted to say you should make your visit here worth the while by dining at one of the following restaurants: Central or Maido. Central ranked 6th best restaurant in the world and Maido being the 10th.. Also Lima is a very big metropolis if you are into traffic, danger and noise hahaha. Cuisine is Peru's biggest asset (yes better than Machu Picchu and its scenery)Anything you want to know about Peru just ask away~

i bought this dudes art... years ago i was in cusco for a short stay then back to the us mainland, me n my ausy friend bought several pieces. he was legit. i got a ahyausca influenced and pacha mama pachapapa and this one of a kind with these 2 llamas doing it causally in the middle of a bunch of other llamas like how they hang out. he had great brush strokes and it felt authentic where as others didnt haver that same feel. i still have them. there were lots of other artists but ciro was the winner along with one other. i almost sold 1 for 7k usd a smaller one but it had a feeling to it. i turned them down. ciro had that spark when i saw his art with my bro i might have bought it before... i was i want to see your art the stuff you have that is passion . and dude had it. awesome to see him get some air time. he felt like a genuine artist and good dude. there are still artists out there. he had good tubes for the art to. no issues on bringing it home. ive one to the met and seen many art exhibits. it was captivating for me. i went back yrs later and saw him and others and no one had the 2 llamas doing it i felt like he just did it for me knowing id come and get it. it was tasteful. id laugh but it had this nestalgia feel with a bit of realism comedy... llamas in their natural state.

This is guinea pig Cuzco style. Harald you have to try the one from Arequipa 'cuy chactado'. That's the best one from all cooked guinea pigs. I'm a local who is recommending you this dish, but if you need more confirmation you can look for it in the conde nast website and you'll see that they also consider it as the best guinea pig dish. You'll fall in love with it and will always want to try it again

Because from the independence until now all the land was remain in hands of those who had the land before, the land that was stolen from the incas. They murdered thousands to have private property of those lands, but still they kept those lands for their own after independence, exploiting them and making a lot of money, while the real inca descendants live like Ciro. Is just pure injustice.

You should try “Cuy Picante”, the sauce is amazing. One of my favorite plates of the mountain region in Peru. Not sure they make it on Cusco though.

Ciro said average wage is $500 a month. That's $125 a week. Ciro hustles the art but the money isn't steady. At fifteen US dollars each they probably can't eat there more than once a month...if that.
Hoz Holla The minimum wage is 500 usd, average salary is around 1400 usd. That guinea pig cost 45 usd. Guinea pig in Peru is quite expensive and in the coast where nobody eats it even more expensive
