This story was such an adventure! And so much fun to shoot! But I want to know your honest thoughts after watching... Do you think he really hasn't slept since 1962? Or do you think he sleeps on occasion? Would love to hear from you in the comments here!
Man has three houses, where nature is his front and backyard, has a wife that cooks fresh killer dishes daily, he drinks, smokes, super chill, super productive. This man is not only super human, he's rich in more ways than one.
@@chazlon5061 What are you even saying? Are you implying that drinking and smoking makes you poor? Read my comment again. The man is productive, he makes money and has property, and his wife and family is happy. Drinking and smoking is his enjoyment what's wrong with that? Now it's when you drink and smoke or engage in any other vices that inhibits your productivity as a human, and your bad habit consumes you, then that's when it's an issue. About 80% of millionaires that I know personally either smokes, drinks, or both.
@@chazlon5061 What? They have nothing to do with living a good life. A few of people in deed have been lived not bad with them but it doesn't mean both of them really contribute and conduce to a good life.
This is definitely severe insomnia caused by PTSD, unfortunately it's not that uncommon actually. He likely experiences 'micro-sleep' quite often (this lasts only several seconds to minutes typically), he said he is able to sleep for about 2 hours if he drinks enough alcohol to stop thinking, that confirms that it's directly PTSD related. He likely developed a fear of sleeping/being unconscious during the war. I personally have experienced a full week of no sleep several times because of my own PTSD, the only reason I was unable to sleep was fear, any time I'd get close to sleeping even the smallest sound, movement or thought would have my heart jumping out of my chest, for that reason I started preferring to keep myself busy at night. The fear that's keeping you awake with this kind of PTSD is either the night terrors experienced when sleeping or the fear of a repeat of your traumatic experience. In my case it was mostly fear of someone coming into my home to commit violence on me as that is what happened to me. I still am an insomniac, though I've had some improvement, I feel really bad for this man because I know how exhausting and uncomfortable it is to sleep this little for extended periods of time. In reality this man probably knows exactly why he can't sleep but it's too painful to confront head on himself, so he copes through addictions and distractions, it is typical severe PTSD.
he has 3 properties, old as shit, can still drink daily just fine and looks like he has a good grip on reality. im sure he has traumas, but i think he's living a pretty fulfilling life minus the sleep
I think he is a very happy person always smiling he just wants to live with his wife in that small house and he was so happy when Drew and his friend came to him u could see it he was very excited to tell them
I know i'm a year late but this was beautiful in so many ways. The humanity in this the welcoming to the home, the bonding, culture, the respect and pure connection was such a pleasant thing to see.
There are sleep clinics in Switzerland, so it´s strange no one has offered to treat him there-I mean, the way videos go viral...Maybe he does not want to, precisely because of what you say @Kephasis
I second the "damn that's true" ....and add -based off when he started not sleeping he would be at least 130 years old .... that was a super rough calculation
“Can you believe it took me 3 total days of travel time to find him?” Actually, I’d say finding a man based on a name and picture in flooded Vietnam while starting from Arizona is borderline miraculous 😂… 3 days is super fast.
@user-cj2pz3qw6ri feel similar, but it’s not like he really doesn’t sleep. it’s a lie- not something he can’t control. i think it is a bit different in this case, but they should’ve at least asked before filming him (i do want to add that of course it’s possible he isn’t exactly lying, but maybe something is being mistranslated)
A 106-year-old lady was asked, "Haven't doctors throughout your life warned you about cigarettes?" She said, "Some of them have but all of them are dead now."
Doesn’t make smoking any less dangerous. I’ve heard of people living to be in thier 100’s while smoking or drinking, and I’ve heard of previously perfectly healthy young people get cancer and die. You never know what will happen in life, so it’s a gamble to do it, and I can see why. But to each their own, I used to smoke cigarettes and I still vape and smoke weed lmao
At that age.. who cares about health...iust live ur life till the end its suffocating when almost everythin u want to eat/drink are ban and the thing recommended for u are expensive medication... jst prepare coffin already😂
My heart broke when he said he wanted to sleep, lay down on the bed for a little bit and just sat up and smiled. I pray that somehow the doctors finally come up with a way to help him, because you can just tell, even after everything during the war he went through, he's still able to genuinely smile and let complete strangers into his home and feed them.
Yes, I do think the war made this elderly man, suffer from PTSD. The fear of sleeping and be killed, the mind is always rushing for cover. You are so kind, Drew. Thanks for sharing this video.
@@ricky8545 I agree. He's already addicted to alcohol and cigs so adding a prescription wouldn't be a huge deal. I would just be worried about him mixing booze and tranqs. Good way to off yourself unintentionally.
@@StrangeScaryNewEnglandXanax has a way of lessening the craving for alcohol, he would probably drink less. think about on an average day this is how much he drinks. If he wants to get drunk it’s probably twice that amount, he should be pretty immune to the feeling. To be honest though why give him synthetic drugs over rice wine that he is happy making and drinking with no complaints
Wow this is incredible. The family is so beautifully kind and hospitable to allow him to glimpse into their lives, and he did a great job interviewing the sleepless man and telling his story. It does show the lasting effects of war and sheds light on what veterans go through. This man has done an incredible job over his sleepless years, hardworking and taking care of his wonderful family.
Twilight sleep (or wake sleeping due to PTSD) is considered no sleep (because you don’t enter REM sleep, and can be woken by the slightest thing (literally you can appear to be asleep, and may even snore; but hear everything around you, including your own snoring) Depression and anxiety, doesn’t stop a person from smiling and pretending to be okay - Robin Williams is one famous person who smiled right up until he took his own life. I’m a regular non-celebrity person who has endured 20+ years of smiling depression, and I still struggle to enter REM sleep. (You’ll know you are in REM, because you dream in REM sleep) I haven’t had a dream in a while (I dream 2-3 times a year) I hear everything when I’m asleep, so I wear earplugs (LOOP brand muffles the noise, but doesn’t block it completely)
You truly are such a kind person to be willing and able to connect with people how you do. I fear this lovely man suffers from severe insomnia and PTSD but seems to be trying to adapt any way he can. What a gift for you to spend time together in his world
His story has been widespread in Vietnam media for a while. I remember reading about him when i was younger. It’s nice to see him still being healthy and well.
This man survived a time where he had to be up for survival, a time when you feared closing your eyes because of the thought of what might happen if you do. Truly a warrior for going so long without no sleep, I wish him good health both mentally and physically. God bless.
I don't think the war plays any part in his sleep problem, it was a long time ago, assuming he is 80 years old and even fought in the war, he offered no proof he served in the army and no evidence was presented to establish his age. His sons look remarkably young for a guy 80. How old are they, no older then 22-27? Look at the age of his wife. It doesn't add up for a couple that old to have such young children. It's much more likely his sleep problem is caused by the constant amount of sugar he's consuming in the rice wine (reinforced by the fact he barely eats) that is over-stimulating his brain. Add to that he's clearly a chronic alcoholic, drinking 50-70% proof rice wine like its water all day long. Alcohol is extremely toxic to the organs, and has almost certainly damaged his brain and liver at this level of consumption over an extended period. He clearly has a very very high tolerance to alcohol if he can drink 1 litre of this stuff and be fine. That would be enough to put the average person out of action for several days, and in some cases might even be a lethal blood level of alcohol, depending on the amount of alcohol in his home-made rice wine, which could be higher than 70% proof. German alcohol made from potatoes is typically 70-90% proof, much stronger than vodka or whisky. Even drinking a bottle of whisky or vodka a day for years would severely damage your liver, brain and other organs. He's been slowly poisoning himself over a long period. It's more a miracle that he's even alive, and in such good shape, ad not severely ill or even dead,. Remarkable he's able to get by with the occasional nap and just laying down to rest, and still able to function and do work every day, even despite this level of alcohol poisoning on his body. I'd love to see some MRI scans of his liver and brain to see how extensive the alcoholism damage is by doing blood works on him to measure his blood sugar level and assess his liver function. It does raise some interesting scientific inquiry into what's different about Asian cultures, and factors like healthier diets, low-stress lifestyles, compared to the West, which reduces the risk of diseases and promotes healthier old ages in their countries compared to ours.
@@paullangton-rogers2390 very interesting. I've come up with the same conclusions myself about the extreme addictions to stimulants. But I disagree with the time limit on a severe untreated mental health disorder. The evidence with the attack on his hand could produce enough trauma to effect someone for life, so if the war stories are true as well...I would add PTSD to the equation as well like mentioned in the vid.
The video super awesome, mates 😮 Thanks so much for having me in this adventure, so proud of be a part of this. Really missing you guys already. Just let me know when you guys have a chance back to Vietnam, mates. 💪💪💪 See you!
This man is uncanny! I suffer from sleep apnea and insomnia and couldn't imagine dealing with what he's going through. The most beautiful thing about him is his resilience. He's able to tackle life with a smile on his face. Great video Drew!
this guy is an absolute warrior, hats off to you sir! And thank you Drew for giving the guy some cash to get help. Too often, I see journalist/youtubers get the story and barely give back to the host.
So he want us to believe he hasn't slep for over 60 years? Those who believe him are stupid to say the least since the human body can't operate without sleeping , the maximum someone can stay without sleeping is around 11 day and this way stay more than 60 years? yeah right!🤣
My uncle was in the war and has PTSD. He struggles tremendously to sleep at night because of it. Getting up to the slightest noise, so PTSD can definitely be a cause to his condition.
@@mttlsa686 and the fact he uses alcohol to sleep is also a lot like my uncle who uses beer to try and sleep. So I guess that's how? And plus he's been living that way for so long maybe his body is just accustomed to it now

Hi Drew! I’m from Việt Nam myself and I did here story about Mr Ngọc. And I believe that he really suffered from PTSD after the war. Thank you so much for coming all the way here to tell a story. Keep on going and sharing stories men!
I hope he will be healed of his sleeplessness and be able to sleep through the night. What a beautiful land and people. My love to everyone! It’s amazing not to sleep, yet have a productive, happy life. Amazing.
I'm a Vietnamese myself, have heard of this incredible story a few times, still not figured out why this man hasn't slept since 1962, until you share it to the whole world. Like, yeah, many people here in the comment section seem to know why, and it's really cool. Thank you guys so much!
The story of a man who hasn't slept since 1962 is often associated with claims about a Vietnamese man named Thái Ngọc, a war veteran who reportedly stopped sleeping after a fever in 1973. While such stories are fascinating, they usually lack scientific verification and are often embellished. It's plausible that, if true, his brain could have adapted by taking micro-sleeps or brief moments of unconsciousness, as seen in some sleep disorders. Micro-sleeps can occur without the person being fully aware, allowing the brain to get some rest. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) could also contribute to sleep disturbances. War veterans, in particular, may experience chronic insomnia, nightmares, and hyperarousal, all of which can severely impact sleep. However, it's important to consider these stories with skepticism, as extreme cases of sleeplessness without severe health consequences are exceedingly rare and typically undocumented by the scientific community.
As someone who has experience self medicating with alcohol, my heart hurts for him.I imagine his war experience was very traumatic. My first thought was that his brain is constantly on watch for danger. In war it meant death to sleep and be vulnerable. He is trapped in that time and I can’t blame him for using alcohol to shut down his mind. It’s sad that he has no access to healthcare or medication. It’s possible a couple ambian and talk therapy would change his life. I pray this man finds peace
Thanks for the perceptive comments, GL. You hit the nail on the head. I was once traumatized by watching a grim accident and, seeking help, no one would believe me while a man was bleeding to death. I kept replaying the incident in my mind for weeks on end. It was a non-stop nightmare for me. I couldn't end the memory tape replaying. Finally a spiritual mentor/older friend told me I did everything I possibly could to remedy the situation. Stop beating yourself up...I was told. And instantly the problem faded to nothingness and I was healed. I can understand why the Vietnamese fellow turned to alcohol to block out his pain. This is a very troubling situation which needs attention.
He's already medicating himself so much, it wouldn't hurt to give him something proper that doesn't destroy his organs. That could be zolpidem like you mention, but those never did anything for me, so he'd probably want diazepam or something on top to help with alcohol withdrawal (sleep is impossible when you're borderline delerium tremens). People in Thailand are lucky, they can legally try cannabis if they're in his situation.
Without question, this poor man is suffering for lack of sleep since the Vietnam War. He was partially injured and perhaps could not forget that war and scared to die or be killed if he falls asleep. It could be his mind playing him around and he uses rice wine to numb his fear and feelings. Let's all wish him nothing but the best and hope God gives him more years but more importantly some little joy and happiness in this cruel world of ours (don't think he's truly happy) before finally meeting his end. He's such a kind, loving and decent person and not fair to live such kind of life without experiencing once again ... sleep, rest and real relaxation.
Yeah!!!! the Americans they are so proud of their involvements in Vietnam war. And this is the end result of these innocent Vietnamese suffering today. Even heard Agent Orange??? Google if you never heard of it.
Our brains are very powerful. I'd love to see him get diagnosed and maybe get some help with his PTSD. Bless his heart, all the people there seem so kind and happy.
You mean "we are very powerful". Not "our brains". We don't *have* brains, we *are* brains. None of our body is separate from the other parts. There aren't even actual "parts" of the body. We only made up the "parts" so we could itemize them and differentiate where or what needed medical attention. Where does your head really end and your neck ACTUALLY begin? Our bodies are one big unit. We are our bodies, not something inhabiting a body like a pilot in a mechanical robot suit. Not how it works. Back to the sleepless man; do you think prescription meds would help him if he could obtain some?
@@StrangeScaryNewEngland If hes made it this far to the age of 80 and still going , hes probably better just carrying on , a lot of prescription meds have long lists of side effects probably not something an old man would benefit from , plus heavy drinking of alcohol and prescrip meds is not a good idea either ... if anything it would make matters worse
I sometimes cant sleep for days because of chronic pain, I feel this mans struggle, yet hes such an inspiration having 3 houses and a beautiful family not letting his problems stop him from achieving his dreams. I hope I can do the same things this man has done and be happy.
Maybe the bigger story is how incredibly friendly Mr Ngoc and his family are. Two strangers show up and you basically had a sleep-over (even if he didn't sleep he was in PJ's). That attitude and the scenery makes me want to visit Vietnam. I've been to Thailand and they're super friendly too. Maybe this part of Vietnam is friendlier? Amazing trip. Great video.
HAHAHA, WITH THE CUT THEY GOT FROM THE FRUIT SELLER, $10, for $3 worth of fruit, and the money the old bastard brings to the town with people looking to visit him….the whole country is a scam. I first went there in 1985, almost 30 years later my Vietnamese wife is laughing at the idiot kid being suckered. Perfect example of Vietnamese pig farmers, wants money for doctors but he has 3 houses, $4,000 in pigs….just another drunk in a country full of them. You can see a Dr. there for $3. You bunch of fools. I speak Vietnamese and they were talking about how they can get money from the moron American.
Everybody around the world do that with the exception of Europeans and Americans. You can go to an European house and if you weren’t invited for dinner they will eat in front of you. But if you go to anybody else in Africa, Philippines, India, Vietnam I’ll just say this, every country in Asia they will feed you. 🙏🏽
My dad was in the Vietnam war he also could stay alert with his eyes closed he always said he was just resting his eyes he could sit there looking like he was asleep but heard & was able to respond to a conversation while "resting his eyes" he did mention that while being in the war they had to sleep with one eye open because they could get their throat slit by the Vietnam soldiers if you fell completely asleep
when you fight for your land you must not let your enemies sleep. all respect to vietnam soldiers, all condolescences to the US workers who lived that hell in the name of imperialism
Whoever is reading this, I wanted to say I hope you have a great day and that God loves you so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins and He rose again from the dead three days later. God Bless! And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later. 2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you! 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever. I'm Praying for you and you are loved (Romans 10:9-13)
The biggest problem that alcohol causes is insomnia. After a few hours of sleep, alcohol can cause you to wake up and have a difficult time going back to sleep. Alcohol also has a negative effect on Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Also, PTSD causes insomnia in about 70% of sufferers. I believe this is a combo of the two, coupled with our bodies tendency to microsleep when we go to long without sleeping. He likely blacks out for microseconds at a time he'd unaware of to compensate. Religion & spirituality is known to cause some faacinating changes to the brain that we can't fully understand. I wonder how much of it is due to his strong beliefs as well.
My dads best friend fought in the Vietnam war and to this day, we know better than to bring up that war around him. I can’t imagine what both he and the gentleman in this video went through in that war, but it must’ve been hell on earth if this poor gentle soul can’t even sleep. I wonder if he had nightmares about the war so he fought sleep and over time his body just got used to little to no sleep at all.
the fact that he can be a heavy smoker and drinker and still being able to stay awake and do all the jobs he has is really impressive! hope he lives for a very longer time ❤
@@vidda2000 yeah but nicotine isn't really a strong stimulant at all. Not even close to coffee. What's trips me is he's gotta at least get sleepy and even pass out from the alcohol though since alcohol is a depressant. 🤔

I have a Vietnamese friend and he is currently living in the US. He couldn't sleep either. He told me he was South Vietnamese soldier during the war, he got injuried by the incoming Vi Ci RPG, the blast caused him sleepless for 40+ years. Probably the explosion and the shocks caused his his nerve system went down
That is so intense. It probably has to do with damage in the vagus nerve. I suffer from gastritis/gerd and it is so difficult to sleep and stay asleep.
Many years ago I went through a period of no sleep……it was horrible….literally felt like a Zombie for the few months I went through it. The weird part is I was traveling at the time with no sleep. Could not imagine this long without sleep.
Scientist says just by closing your eyes you can already gain energy even without sleeping. But for 61 years? Thats amazing! Have you heard the story about the man who never showers and only eat dead animals? But he's dead now. (RIP) They forced(?) him to shower.
@@dcmjE It was in Iran essentially he wanted a partner but he could never get one, eventually the village that took care of him convinced him to he wasn't forced he died fourd months after (he was in his 90s) Also I think his brain might have figured out how to process memory's without sleeping. (So he can essentially asleep while functioning.)
My dad suffered something similar but not from ptsd, rather excessive use of ephedrine through the 90’s. It was a common pre workout supplement, but stored in his body fat for nearly a decade after it was banned in the us. Every time he attempted sleep his body would shut down but his brain was firing on all cylinders so to speak. Powerful sleeping pills would do nothing but force on hallucinations. He’s good now, which is a bonus but still was scary as a kid living with somebody who never slept.
this dude is not just a super human but hes super cute with such a beautiful heart and lovely family. lots of respect and best wishes for him and his lovely family. they really made me want to visit Vietnam.
Amazed at what the human condition can do. Sleeplessness, alcohol and smokes for years and yet still trucking. Most of us would be dead at 65 living this way for years but not this guy. Body can only take so much and eventually it will give out. Still you have to wonder how the hell its gotten him this far. Damn. Respect
Watching this I realized something insane. We beef in the streets over here about girls, drugs, money hell just pure jealousy. This dudes life was changed forever because of war from his sleep to his hand to his lifestyle and all that. Then an American comes and after everything he’s been thru he still extended his hand greeted you with open arms gave you a place to stay and fed you and never cared where you came from an laughed at the fact that American people had a hand in what altered his life. This dude has the biggest forgiving loving heart there is and this shows me I got a ton of work to do on my self. WOW. That hit me hard man I gotta learn to let shit go it’s only tearing me up at this point.
Someone once said, "Everyone should smile. Life really isn't that serious -- we make it hard. The sun rises, the sun sets... we just tend to complicate the process."
All of those things you mentioned that most people do are really because of our culture and technology. The internet has changed the western world in the worst way possible, and all it does is stoke the egos of all these desperate, annoying, lonely kids and young adults. Now everything is about how much flashy bling you have, going to nightclubs half naked, doing drugs, money money money, sex, shooting or hurting people you don't like, suing someone because they looked at you funny, destroying English with street slang, the list goes on. People that live in places like this man haven't been exposed to and brainwashed by the same things the rest of us are. I'm only 32 and don't want to sound like a boomer, but the internet and social media really are ruining EVERYTHING. No ifs, ands, or buts.
good that this has made you have that realization! That is growth! now just apply it to your life and work on yourself and make the changes! you can learn to forgive, let shit go, and be a loving person!
This could very well be the video that I enjoyed the most. It was so magical and beautiful. Vietnam 🇻🇳 and its people are absolutely amazing. God bless this country and its citizens. 🙌❤️
Its fascinating how he can function normally without sleep. Even if he does sleep for a few minutes or 2 hours, it couldn't be enough for a normal person. Your body will be weak and feel lightheaded. It's amazing and sad at the same time. Maybe you're right, the war made him like this, and the fact that he still wouldn't share why is very heartbreaking. Imagine maybe he's lived almost 80% of his life fearing to get his mind be at peace and now he just wanted to sleep. He deserves to sleep soundly especially in his age.
The body make some adaptation that's why he can function normally, it's rare condition. most people will experience psychosis if they not sleep for several days, but some people will not show any symptom, most people out there struggle to sleep including me.
The part where he sat on the side of the bed and looked like he was thinking hit me pretty hard. That's what I do sometimes. I was in the Iraq war 03, and 05, diagnosed with PTSD in 04, found out I have Bipolar II disorder about 3 years ago. I was an opiate addict, and a lot of times I couldn't close my eye's and sleep unless I was loaded. Even now I have been sleeping in my computer chair for almost a year now. My bed is full of my clothes. The reason is when I lay down I feel like i'm dying, and I jump back awake. The fear that hits me is so hard I just ended up staying awake. So now I just stay in my computer chair, and if sleep comes, then it comes. I don't try to have a schedule anymore though. This is the first time i've ever talked about it.
Sorry to hear this! It’s important to talk about it. In war you see the worst that human beings can do to each other. It must be very difficult to pretend all is “normal” when you know how things can be…. It’s like living in a parallel universe and somehow people around you seem to not be able to relate to what you have experienced. I wish you much betterment!
Man this makes me so sad to hear. That must be horrrific. I hope you'll find peace. If you haven't considered seaking trauma-therapy please do consider it. Wish you all the best!
@Em K I’d really encourage seeking diagnosis and treatment! There’s a treatment called EMDR which is life-changing and really effective. Wishing you the best.
Thank you for your service. I pray for your peace and healing from the traumatic experiences that you suffered all to serve our country. May GOD bless you in Jesus name!❤
That's true I was hospitalized because I couldn't sleep for 10 days, my eyes looked and felt like sandpaper, my body was roiling in pain, and I could not make sense of much of anything, I did almost die. With that said if somehow he is telling the truth, then he is the world record holder, replacing the previous record of 264 hours of no sleep, a record I almost accidentally, but did not, beat. Pretty sure I woulda just died if I went any longer. It hurts a lot.

There is a disorder call Fatal Familial Insomnia, but it is only known to affect people from a small town in Italy and their descendants. I think he is on to something about PTSD from the war. Extreme insomnia is known to be a symptom. The thing is, there is a reason for the name of the Italian disorder. It is ALWAYS fatal from the lack of sleep. He may experience what is known as microsleep, which can occur with the eyes open. I'd be interested to know if this occurs. When he drinks a lot of rice wine and believes he is sleeping, he most likely is not. He has just passed out, which is not technically the same as sleep. He might get some of the benefits from a mild sleep, but it may actually do more harm than good. It would make this post WAY longer to explain why. I feel for the guy. The fact he is still in good spirits says a lot about this man's strength, as well as who his family is. They seem like good people.
I believe there are 2 sufferers (brother and sister) in Australia with that disorder. The lady is a television reporter, and she took part in a documentary regarding it. Very scary.
@@mathewaitken938 I believe you are correct about that. I think heard of them as well. I know I heard about siblings suffering from it, which was of interest to those studying the disorder. Those that suffer from it live all over the world. Their genealogy all tracks back to the same town in Italy, but they do not all live there. It comes from a genetic issue. If I am remembering correctly, as it has been a LONG time since I have studied it, it is a protein mutation that it is attributed to; but don't hold me to that, as I could be thinking of another disorder. I studied these in college a little over 20 years ago.
I was really worried that I was not able to sleep for the past 2 days properly due to cold ,but this seriously made my realize that sleep is a gift and I am gifted

Living life is the secret to life. Creating moments is life. Filming them is work but you and your camera man and team independently made magic. This is real entertainment and better then scripted crap that the big producing television and film companies cannot make. It’s rare and I love the Realness and reality of your channel. It’s awesome. This story touched me because worrying or ptsd can keep anyone up. I can be super tired physically and mentally and cannot sleep. I think of my family, life and all my ups and downs of life. I can easily not sleep for one or two nights. I suffered a bone marrow transplant to beat stage four lymphoblastic lymphoma 20 years ago. This man went through war. I can relate but cannot imagine the fear of one night worrying and seeing war. My mantra anytime I feel down is their is always someone worse off then you are. I suffer from neuropathy and type one diabetes from the treatment. Full body radiation killed the cancer after four months of chemotherapy and nine spinal taps injecting chemo. I beat cancer but at a cost to my health. I’m not complaining because I lived and turned my experience into success by way of making videos to inspire people to live in the now and enjoy life like theirs no tomorrow. So to you and your team and this man and family and everyone commenting and watching your videos and living life please help others around you, like and share this video and subscribe. for someone who doesn't sleep i'm surprised at how strong he is, i mean he do things and walked here and there just fine wow just wow also he is smiling everytime, bless you 🙏🏻
That's because we're brainwashed into thinking sleep is somehow healthy. If that were true he'd be dead long ago. I only slept 1 hour a day for nearly a month with no negative side-effects. Doctors are told that if the body doesn't sleep after day 11 it dies. Lience is full of lies.

Drew, it may just be because of my extensive exposure to Vietnamese/Lao/Hmong culture, but I could literally feel the temperatures and smell the humidity in the air in the scenes. I felt the humbleness of these people and could even taste the food you were eating at this man's house that his wife cooked. Thank you so much for travelling and producing this video, it truly gave me some nostalgia with this culture.
You could definitely feel the humidity and temperature just by watching footage of them. Especially when you've spent time in similar environments before.
@@Will-cj8vp Its a sensation you get when you looked back at the footage of similar environments you've been in. I guess you have never been outside of your basement, or just lack the basic visual sense thats all.
This could actually be an incredibly sad story. I met a man once who had terrible sleep at night because of his night terrors from the war. So it wasn't just that he couldn't sleep, it was also because he was just too terrified to go to sleep. I suspect this could be a similar situation. Poor guy, I hope he finds peace and restful sleep.
I suggest you educate yourself, I was tortured and abused for many years as a child and I used to wet myself and hide under my bed and I still have nightmares but zero sleep is absolutely impossible!!!!!! Look up ffi it’s fatal familial insomnia and that slowly progresses until they get no sleep then they die within a month or 2, they are left brain dead and hallucinating non stop. No matter what trauma a person goes through, eventually they will fall asleep. It’s hilarious lots of idiots here think it’s possible!! 😂😂

@@arsonfly Agreed. I have heard of sleep deprivation experiments from the 60s where people were healthy/fit people were forced to stay awake for around a month, and within around 1-3 weeks (Depending on the individuals) they were pretty much mentally done and legit hallucinating and even having waking dreams and when the month was over a lot of them went insane and even the ones that were least affected were noticeably changed, so yeah, this guy is a absolute miracle on 2 legs :) In my prime I once tried staying awake for as long as possible and was getting towards the 2 day mark, drifting in and out, then I was done/crashed even though I still tried to stay awake and I ended up sleeping like a log for nearly a full day, lolz :)
This is very inspiring to see a man that doesn't sleep still employed. I have my reasons for not working and living a normal lifestyle. He doesn't seem to be complaining about it. Makes my problems seem miniscule.

Vietnam is so green and beautiful. I survived the war as a combat Marine. I always wanted to go back to the area where we operated from. I am in fear that I trip an old booby trap and either die or have a body part blown off. These are great video's to see. The village I was near is Dia Loc near the San Vu Gia River. God watched over me and my life has been filled with both with ups and downs. I nearly drank myself to death. I gave up cigarettes in the early 70's. I have PTSD and hypertension.
Old bombs or traps like that are rare nowadays since they remove most of them. You should be fine :) I would suggest book a tour via a travel company in Saigon and they will take care of your travel. Vietnam welcomes everyone
it would be interesting to have him agree to see a sleep specialist with a camera and see the tests they run. I think it could also benefit him if he agreed to talk to a professional about the war. Perhaps talk and learn about PTSD. Of course, consent is key but nonetheless, it would be good for him if he had access.
@@giusepperaciti1591 I absolutely agree with you. Sleep patterns are very complex. As someone with narcolepsy I can assure you that this is what happens with our disorder. It's not that we sleep all of the time, but rather in short bursts. We enter into REM within less than 5 minutes after falling asleep. We also don't remain asleep for long periods of time. Sometimes narcoleptics can also enter into REM while wide awake. I suspect that this dude has some rare form of hyper insomnia. His lack of sleep has definitely reaped havoc on his body after all those years. To be honest, I'm surprised he's still alive. His heart must be a ticking time bomb. I couldn't help but notice the part where Drew shakes his hand. The dude was lethargic like an SOB. It may be because he was having a microsleep, as you stated.
I worked with a man who experienced a very traumatic experience when he was a teenager. As a result his ptsd prevented him from sleeping ever again allegedly. We worked together in a restaurant kitchen and he smoked cigarettes and seldom ate as well. Once or twice a year he would visit a hospital and they would put him under to be a able to sleep. Despite this, he was always a great worker, level headed, and looked young for his age. I believe he was nearly 60 years old or older but until I learned this I believed he was in his early forties. He was in great physical shape as well.
@@khoya he always said he wished he could sleep and that he wanted to sleep like everyone else. But he said he was used to it and didn’t really feel tired. Sometimes he would be tired like everyone else after a busy shift.

Thats very sad :(
It sucks he has to go through that, and you too. I had no idea that was a symptom of PTSD
Sending you 💞 & healing. 💞

Amen! ✝️

He does want to sleep though. He doesn't like being sleepless after all? I like to stay awake forever, I never wanted to sleep in the first place.
Que maravilloso documental. ❤❤❤ Bendiciones para ti y tus invitados a tus videos.
If you don't need sleep who cares? We sleep because we need it. This man doesn't need it.
and you know, you're absolutely right my friend
Makes sense

That attitude and the scenery makes me want to visit Vietnam. I've been to Thailand and they're super friendly too. Maybe this part of Vietnam is friendlier? Amazing trip. Great video.

1. Believe that God sent His Son
(Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later.
I'm Praying for you and you are loved
(Romans 10:9-13)

Vietnam welcomes everyone
did you kill a lot of vietnames?😅
why even go in the military for and risk your life? it’s dangerous
Hypertension could you tell me some cause and effects do & don't please and thank you!
Most of all thank you for your service God bless you
Thank You for Your Service!
it would be interesting to have him agree to see a sleep specialist with a camera and see the tests they run. I think it could also benefit him if he agreed to talk to a professional about the war. Perhaps talk and learn about PTSD. Of course, consent is key but nonetheless, it would be good for him if he had access.
sure... make money out of it
To unwrap that now might kill him.. his brain is making him live the in the moment, and he seems happy and non violent.
It looks like he has micro-sleeps every minute, where he gets few seconds of REM Sleep
@@giusepperaciti1591 maybe the rice wine helps activate it for him.
0:16 he was sleep 😂😂😂
His son looks so much like him. Hope they all continue in good health for many years.
Yeah, he's living proof that sleep is overrated, which I already knew, but this was nice confirmation.
@@atlasgunther8947 lol wtf
@@atlasgunther8947 i think you might be right
@@atlasgunther8947 sleep isn’t overrated 😂
I worked with a man who experienced a very traumatic experience when he was a teenager. As a result his ptsd prevented him from sleeping ever again allegedly. We worked together in a restaurant kitchen and he smoked cigarettes and seldom ate as well. Once or twice a year he would visit a hospital and they would put him under to be a able to sleep. Despite this, he was always a great worker, level headed, and looked young for his age. I believe he was nearly 60 years old or older but until I learned this I believed he was in his early forties. He was in great physical shape as well.
PTSD is one hell of a condition, I’ve known people who wake up in the middle of the night pretending to shoot a machine gun and screaming.
did he feel tired though? like an everlasting insomnia? or was he simply never tired
This is exactly the comment I was looking for I have ptsd and I legit barely sleep
@@khoya he always said he wished he could sleep and that he wanted to sleep like everyone else. But he said he was used to it and didn’t really feel tired. Sometimes he would be tired like everyone else after a busy shift.
@@wildbill3811 so what do he do when he tired? or at night its still doesnt make sense to me
Anyone who has ever had a loved one who is a functional alcoholic with PTSD from fighting in a war can draw stark comparisons here. This sweet old man reminds me of my angel father may his soul rest in peace. My heart felt warm watching this; he reminds me of my dad so much. 😞
Take care man
