Our family had that exact machine, purchased around 84 or 85 - 70 Series HD. That machine lasted for about 15 years or so with nearly daily use. Only repair that it needed was the timer burned out after about 12 years. Great machine there, and even worth more than $5 as scrap, so either way you come out ahead!
And I'm willing to bet that of all the video on the internet, this is the only one featuring a washing machine in use in the back of a pickup truck! lol
    Great vids as always! :)

Chad, i used to work for a Whirlpool dealer in the late 80's to the early 90's &i did a lot of service calls on whirlpool & kenmore machines. the model you have there was made around the years 1986 - 1990. that was one of the last belt driven models that Whirlpool corporation made before their radical design change in late 1991. that is definetly a keeper

Very nice! We had a similar washer when I was little (that would've been the late 90's) that we had until the early 2000's when we junked it, along with the matching Kenmore dryer, which is still in existence in my father's old house, and worked when it was last used about 4 years ago.
The agitation sound is different then this machine. I always found it soothing.
    Great video!

My Series 70 is still going strong since 1985 (!) It needs a little TLC every few years (just installed a new upper agitator and clutch dogs), I hope it runs for another 28 years....they really don`t build `em like this anymore....this one has a baked enamel finish that`s still in excellent shape after all this time. I wish I had a dollar for every load of wash that`s gone through this machine.... :-)

This is a wonderful machine. My best friend's family had one from 1979 which had a PentaSwirl type agitator (single piece) unlike this one which has the DualAction agitator. Up to 1987, all of the Whirlpool/Kenmore washers were pretty much belt driven and had the terrific "woo woo" sound (some higher pitched like this one or lower pitched with the older 1950 and 1960's models) during the agitation, drain and spin. The pump is what you would hear the "woo woo" from.

@MrRobert5 Whirlpool stopped making belt drive washers for themselves and for Sears in mid 1986 and went exclusively to the direct drive models that they had been building in a limited quanity since 1981 or 82. If you look in any Sears catalog from mid 1986 on you will see the direct drive washers with the timer control on the right side of the panel

My Aunt had one like this, I remember it shook a LOT and she always referred to it as a rocket taking off...but it lasted forever. They even sold it off when they moved...
You got a good deal on that, I could never find something like that for such a price!
Ive always wanted a washer/dryer set of some older 1980's General Electric machines, the washer in particular had a lint screen on top of the agitator. And I the dryer had a top mounted lint trap. I don't see many of those around anymore.

I just got a 1987 Sears Kenmore 70 series, I believe it's a direct drive. Very nice sturdy machine.

For the machines that had either a waterfall detergent dispenser (mostly on the Lady Kenmores) or the ones which had a manual lint filter waterfall, the pump would always be turning creating the "woo woo" and a solenoid would trip during the drain portion to allow the water to pump out (these didn't pause between agitate, drain and spin the way the more recent machines do when they need to change motor directions for the pump out and spin cycle) and then in 4 minutes send the machine into spin.

@vintageappliguy when i was working for that Whirlpool dealer, they still had maintained at least two belt driven models in stock until the later part of 1991 when we could not get any more from the distributer. from then on, it was the direct drive models. i guess that the owner of the dealership was able to secure a deal with Whirlpool to get all of the remaining stock of the belt drive washers.

@westytoploader Westy is absolutely correct. All self cleaning belt-drive Kenmores except a couple very high-end models with the triple dispenser had the self-cleaning filter ring by late 1982. The only model in the last lineup of 1983 models to have a pump-flushed filter was the Lady Kenmore, because of it's triple dispenser.

Wow that is a bargain. My parents had the same model. I remember the paint could be easily scratched off.
I cant remember exactly, but I think ours lasted sometime into the mid 90's before it quit, but my mother got a lot of good use out of it.

Appliances are perfect examples of how "They don't make them like they used to." The crap they're making now is deplorable, at least the "American" stuff. No problems with our LG front-loading washer so far, and it's been about a year since we got it. This cannot be said about the Whirlpool or Frigidaire appliances we've had. This over the course of a few years. I say you're making a good choice sticking to the older appliances!

Congrats on a neat machine. You have a bit of a unique machine in that this model and the three seventy series machines above it were all originally intended to have the polyester finish on the top and lid, and did for most of their production, except for a brief period in late spring of 1986 when a production constraint required this model and one other to get full porcelain tops. Mine has the polyester. I like it fine, but love the beautiful porcelain.

The cycle knob that was able to turn whether the knob pushed in or not was an interesting "washer" Easter Egg, but turning the dial without pushing the knob in too much might strain the timer, or motor. That's what a friend of my Mother thought, because she used to have an older model of these beauties.

@NVHSChadSheppard1 The sounds of these machines are all very similar, from late 1981 forward. The baseplate, tub, and basket were redesigned at that time. I don't know if those changes made the woo-sound get higher in tone or what, but they all seem to have a higher tone from 1981-1986.

  • @NVHSChadSheppard1

@MustangFanNC I totally love this machine. If he can restore it, it'll last forever, I think my lid on my washer has a polyester finish on top of it too, this washer has a nice woo woo sound to it, higher though than my 79 kenmore and it reminds me of the 1982 kenmore you have.

thats great agitation, those are the best although I like the rotating filter with the pump return pouring on it.
I hope you remove the agitator and clean it inside and out, also pull the drum to the side and clean the lint traps a full 360 degrees.
Then run a empty load with 6 cups of bleach.

I like the sound of the 1986 Kenmore washer. It sounds almost exactly like the 1975 Sears Kenmore All American washer that my grandparents used to have. I remember last seeing it in action back in August 2003. What a nice find. Do you still have this machine?

I bought this same model brand new in summer 1986. This model was produced from late 1983 until late fall 1986.
The serial C615 does indeed indicate that it was made in the 15th week of 1986. The model number, being 110.82370130 eliminates the machine being a 1970s model because the first character to the right of the decimal (an 8) is the decade of design.

Nice washer, nothing compares to a kenmore, the nickname for the dual action agitator is the corkscrew because it resembles in a shape of a corkscrew, mine 1979 Kenmore has the same agitator but the woo woo tone is a little lower than this one

According to appliance411, it was manufactured the 15th week of 1986.
The model number is 11082370130, and the serial number is c61521459.
The site actually said 1976 OR 1986 and I guess they got that from 6 and 15 in the serial number. However I don't think the Energyguide law was enacted until the 80s.
I've been a bit sick and this cheered me up, don't often see someone run a washing machine in the back of a pickup!

4:17 drainhose is lower than the pump, it wont do it if the hose is stood up.

It should have a model number starting with 110. The first two digits after the 110. are the model year. It does look like a 1980's machine.

Interesting washer! I never seen a washer before with that additional rotating thing in the middle. Is it driven by the same motor for the rotating drum? Here in germany i only know machines with a rotating drum.
