Majority of riders are the best of friends with their horses and the horses LOVE to do what they are doing. Its a risk putting them in a paddock, just like its a risk competing. More accidents actually happen at the lower level due to lack of skill.
Looking at these falls, the rider is at fault mainly. Many of these riders will not accept criticism, Its a culture thing in the "sport". Many are so full of themselves they do not understand danger and how they contribute to it. They have bad riding habits that they either do not accept, or it has never been noticed.
Brian Sloth, these falls aren’t intentional, I agree with you about SOME riders taking no criticism but they are only human we make mistakes but I’m just wondering if your Horsie or ride?
Love the professionalism of the fallers, especially the last one. Gives her horse an apologetic pat, runs up her stirrups, loosens her girth. As it should be done.
0:36 she just let go and gave up. 1:20 she wanted to be a trotting pole. 1:51 "That's a bush not a jump!?!" 2:13 "I DONT WANNA BE HERE MOM!!" 2:45 "hit the flag hit the flag and HIT THE FLAG **jumps** 3:11 "I WANNA GO SWIMMIN MOMMA" 4:27 I believe I can fly!!
Some of these jumps are just "awful surprises" for the horse. It's not fair to the horse to have it jump a log to water six feet down on the other side with no way to judge how deep the water is. It's not fair to have a horse jump a log to a steep hill where momentum surely throws you forward into a roll over. I wouldn't take a horse through this. Broken legs, necks, bowed tendons...and injured riders is the only outcome.
Not every horse used for eventing is treated like a piece of meat. Most eventers love and care for their horses very much. This video is a horrible example of eventing, most events aren't like this. The riders in this video are either riding under prepared horses or are responsible for the fall due to their lack of riding skills.
no I agree with Iris, their is no difference from jumping 30cm or 130cm injurys will come either way, most horses enjoy what they are doing. Do you think a gymnest is going to stop what theyre doing because they broke an arm that one time or a football players gonna stop their sport because they broke their nose, leg, arm face during that one math? It might not look like it in the videos but those horses get treated like royalty out of the arena. The horse worlds tough but these horses love what their doing or they would do it, a rider can kick and smack their horses but doesnt mean it would go over a jump. I know of so many horses that actually started showing signs of depression after being retired due to age or an accident. I get where your coming from but this is our sport, injurys will occur to both horse and rider, we are a team:)
Jez If my horse tipped the jump and fell the first thing I would do is check the horses legs but some loons out there just either smack their horses or just check the saddle. Edit: Some people think im talking about people in this video but what im trying to say is SOME PEOPLE out there that are just horrible to their horses and usally get mad annd give em a smack, but on the bright side most of the riders in this video didn't have the time to catch their horse because the horse probably trotted away, I get that. Other than that Alot of riders out there are very good to their horses ! so im not hating on any horse riders ! :)
if you're referring to the last girl, the first thing she did was to untie the reins so that they didn't twist up in the horse's legs, and it also looks like she was about to take the saddle of, not checking it. Id say she cares a lot about her horse. Not all the riders check their horse first thing, but at least she did. I'm not trying to be mean but i don't think you should assume that the riders don't care about their horses.
Most riders cannot check their horses right there and then. There is someone else also on the course after they have been on for a certain time and if they stay in that place for too long there will be a collision between them both. Each horse is thoroughly checked over after a fall by the many vets that are on site.
Most of the time I'm more worried about the horse than the rider because the rider chose to take the risk, the horse was forced to do it whether he\she wanted to or not
Midnight Marius The rider can die like the horse mister, you should care about these two life. Horse can refuse, stop treat them like the beauty and the devil. Rider life is equally important as the horse life. You're pretty immature and irresponsible to judge the rider like he is in control of everything, they can also make mistake. No one is perfect, horse and rider are a couple, the two of them are in danger. That's the only point you should care here. The rider have a family, it can be you. And don't tell me you will never do some mistake in your life or on a ride, it's a liar and a greedy affirmation.
How do you think the horses are forced to do it? They’ll have years of XC training before they get anywhere near Burghley. If they ever showed a lack of willingness or ability they wouldn’t be in the competition. It is very difficult to force a horse to do something he doesn’t want to do
Phanic!attheFallOutAllTimeRomaceofSummer all of the horses have leg protection on from what i've seen so far, there's not really anything else you can put on a horse to keep them safe besides splint boots and bell boots.
TheNonMakeupGuru I know other people go and help the horses, however, the riders should because they are the ones that are riding the horse and shouldn't expect others to look after the horse even if other people help. Also it's not very nice to call someone ignorant when you are the one who is being ignorant since you can't respect people's opinions! Maybe you think it's fine if the rider just walks away like they don't care but I don't!
I love horses and enjoy seeing horses do remarkable and athletic things and I don't cry foul that animals are being abused or misused too easily......BUT......some of these "jumps" are just asinine and obviously designed by some human to be "different". Many of these jumps are flat out dangerous and I would never allow my horses or my loved ones to bother competing at some of these events. Jumping over a near blind spot and onto a downhill into water? That is not a jumping competition, that's an idiot competition.
for the one at 1:12 , I think the horse was confused and wasn't prepared for the jump. You can see that it is moving its head back and forth to decide whether to do the jump or go next to it :P
I’m doing research on the new rule change of hackamores not being allowed in eventing anymore. From what I was told by the FEI is because it creates higher instances of rotational falls. This was extremely difficult to watch and seriously make me feel sick to my stomach seeing these animals fall and get caught up on the jumps. Not one of them had on a hackamore. This is basically a short compilation of what a risk analysis showed that was done for the FEI. No tack was mentioned in that report.
Thankfully so have there been issued new building laws (at least in Europe, dont know if all countries care though) that the tracks must not be as complicated as before and built less hard to minimize risk of severe injury of horse or rider since there had been more then one death of both horse and rider during the last years.
I will say, checking your horse is the best way to gain favor with the judges. Even if you can't continue the race, you will be known as the person that cared for their horse. I was riding english pleasure in show one time amd the horse Inwas riding on stumbled really bad over nothing. I descided to just go ahead and get DQd because I wanted to know if she was ok. So I went ahead and let go of the percarious position I was on, and my feet hitting the ground. I checked her legs and she was fine. I didn't know what to do as it was my first year if showing. The judges actually told me to get back on and finish if she was fine and that I had not been DQd. Probably because I checked my horse. Everybody in that pretty big competition circle knew me as the girl who checked her horse.
Honestly the most upsetting thing about this is how the riders pull on the bit. Like, they expect the horses to still jump when they're being told to stop? Of course the horse will go off balance with signals like that!
The majority of cross country enthusiasts jump at novice and training level and have a lot of fun without this kind of risk. Some of these jumps are just stupid risks. I'd like to hear the ongoing story of horses that take these falls and have to be retired. Just because they get up and walk around, jacked up on adrenalin immediately after the fall, doesn't mean there isn't a serious issue that prevents them from ever competing again. And what happens to expensive equine toys that can no longer play the game that 'justified' their expense?
I think the level of fitness in horse AND rider should be addressed going into these 4* events. Younger and younger riders entering these high levels without the experience and possible conditioning necessary. They used to have to complete road and tracks as well as steeplechase before the xcountry.
I'm not defending the event but the Burghley Horse Trials are designed to test horse and rider. Some of these falls are horrific yes, but the riders have almost double the risk of dying than the horse due to size & weight.
Yeah its all about humans at the end of the day isnt it. Oh poor us, animals don't have a voice so I guess they're better off than us when WE force them to jump these courses.
@ 1.15+ - that 4th? rider & horse: the chap with the open CAR boot to their RIDICULOUSLY NEAR right, - doing whatever, you could see the horse sooo distracted
1:00 at least she didn't fall in the water... but honestly XC is too scary for me ahah, it's just the jumps are solid and you and your horse can really get hurt. (don't get me wrong every discipline is dangerous in its own way, but not the bravest of riders haha...) also, 2:11 love how the bay kept an even canter after jumping the tape, looking around like 'next jump?'
I always get worried that the horses may injure themselves when they stumble. I noticed how heavily the one horse was breathing. They must be exhausted with that amount of cantering and jumping. Poor horses... just for human entertainment..
They all got up again, but I'm not sure about the one at 2:55, he's not putting weight on the off hind and the reaction from officials isn't good: see their covering of mouth with shock and instant walkie-talking.
I love how me and my horse trip over a trotting pole, and she's like.." I can't go on..I dying" then we do cross country, and she might throw me and she will fall over too, over a jump, then she gets her ass up, and bolts out of the padlock. Like wtf.
the last rider dident look like she had any expireance at all she was leaning on the horses neck and she wasent holding on to the rains properly but im not sure why the horse fell if the girl doent know how to ride properly well then she shouldent be riding in such a top level show. That my advice im not saying to take it but if you dont know how to ride well your putting yourself and your horse in danger
I don't think some of these jumps are fair, like for example: they will have a huge jump, then a steep hill, and then a pond. The horse will most likely not expect the hill afterwards and possibly trip and fall. ( this is my opinion so you don't have to agree)
This is honestly bad for the horses i have a horse who i do 50-60cm and dressage meduim level. This hurts their tendons, legs and necks.i feel so sorry for those horses they dont derserve it
Some of this is bad judgment or balance by the rider, And a good chunk of it is the Horses miss calculating. They don’t lift their legs high enough, or prepare for a stretch. It just happens sometimes, and this makes me nervous from doing high-level stuff. It doesn’t help that these trials look to be after a rainstorm when everything is nice and slick
I don't know how anyone would find that horses falling and riders falling I'd funny I mean the horse could get relay hurt I mean I'm crying just watching this this is soo sad
kelli totten you dont know what you're talking about. there are SO many riders and horses at Rolex and most of them get thru the course just fine. this video just makes it seem like a lot. these riders and horses are the best in the sport, the course is created to challenge them.
kelli totten what are you on about? You didn't even know what event this was and its one of the biggest eventing events in the world! Shows how much you know
Loads of these turns and jumps are near impossible for a horse to do one after the other successfully. Of course it is possible and it’s meant to be really difficult but I think it’s too risky sometimes for both horse and rider
My horse means more to me than that, I would never risk those fall. Obviously it is not about care for the horse. So I love the falls, people only, did u get hurt, oh so sad, haha. Hope u were, because too many horses r hurt in this sport, what just for fun, to win. Karma's a -itch. Hope it finds u.
I always find videos like this extremely educational. Without question, it's very distressing to me seeing a fall and how badly shaken the horses are after a fall, even those relatively unharmed that keep running. That last chestnut looked completely stricken. I would love to be able to say to that beautifully large horse that that was the last time it would ever have to go through something like that, I really would. ~ For them the feeling is the same how we feel when involved in a serious car smash! It's a horrific shock to the system. ~ Even though I grew up eventing as a rider I am inclined to find it more and more unacceptably unfair on the horse. The tiny numbers of highly skilled riders and proficient horses that win doesn't make it OK for the rest that don''t. ~ "Eventing" has meant to have become better but it's just not across the board, new jump designs and guiding times have done little to halt the number and even type of falls in some cases. Lets face it which ever way we look at it the idea is to eliminate horses, however this is an unacceptably dangerous way to go about it. People should be able to risk their necks if they want to but to expect horses to do the same is just not sporting. ~ With gathering public and rider awareness in how horses should be trained how they should be kept and what we expect from them Im quite honestly wondering if eventing hasn't simply come to it's end in the progression of all things equestrian 21st Century AD. Is there still a place in society for this kind of treatment of a horse? ~ Whether the "sport" shouldn't just be banned outright on welfare grounds is a serious consideration. A series of normal show jumping style fences set across country would be better but then we already have Derby style events and even point to point so where is "eventing" even going to end up? They cant even decide what it should be called. The standard of both the dressage (though it is improving) and show jumping is not nearly good enough to stand on their own as a joint dicipline without the cross country. ~ We cannot be stoic and philosophical about inflicting pain suffering and stress on animals, we need to do something about ending it completely and that's all there is to it. I feel half measures are simply going to excelerate its banning, unlitmately.
I think they need to ALL pat those horses and love on them for awhile. Like the horses got the worst of it and the first thought for any good equestrian is “is my horse okay!?” Like even minor falls
I usually don't criticize events, but this one is just awful. The grass is slick and the ground is uneven. It's like people are asking to be hung and have their horse scared of injured as well. I hope they discontinue this event or find better placement for it.
I love three-day eventing, but it is ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL holding these trials under these weather conditions. It's one thing to hold jumping trials in the rain in an arena with better footing and where the jumps give. But on a cross country course ?!? Aside from the unforgiving jumps, the footing is oviously sh**t for the poor horses, making this even unnecessarily dangerous to both animals and riders. Shame on the organizers.
Denk nach, bevor du was schreibst.
Mussdassein?
Anabelle Crickmore It prevents them running off, if you were in an open field you wouldn't want your horse wandering places you don't want it going, this is the same thing, you don't want them running around when competitors could be riding and then be at risk.
Even if i had the balls to do this level i would never ever risk my horse's life for a sport. he's my friend before all else.
I'm with you.
I feel exactly the same
Callie Jet You're right but YOU would risk YOUR LIFE too. The horse just has to jump to side and you could die.
Mussdassein?
so? His life would still be at risk. Not worth it
Majority of riders are the best of friends with their horses and the horses LOVE to do what they are doing. Its a risk putting them in a paddock, just like its a risk competing. More accidents actually happen at the lower level due to lack of skill.
I love how the last girl rolls up her stirrups and loosened the girth instead of just walking away
At least she shows care and compassion for her horse!! Others...not so much!!
Why is this video labeled 'best falls' these falls were obviously terrifying for horses, riders & viewers
Counting Strides I feel more for the horses
Equi Ava i dont care abt the riders, they asked for it, horses didnt

Did any one else notice, this isn't really recorded, the youtuber just recorded it off of a tv or somethung
yep
Englishrider 27 that's what most people do... So what?

The injury to the horse is not worth the risk
Halo Boxer like I think some of the brush jumps that are easy and simple logs but not the steep drops water and brush jumps.
Then you don’t understand
Some of these jumps are just "awful surprises" for the horse. It's not fair to the horse to have it jump a log to water six feet down on the other side with no way to judge how deep the water is. Brooke Anthony I saw a video one time where a guy came off and smacked the place beside him, spooking the horse
Horses are very beautiful animals indeed and I find them very intriguing. So dignified.
sometimes it just amazes me how strong horses are, they mostly stand up and walk away right after a terrible fall 😱
Yea so do I
Most of the time I'm more worried about the horse than the rider because the rider chose to take the risk, the horse was forced to do it whether he\she wanted to or not

not funny what so ever

Burghley 2016 was so dangerous, it rained all day and the ground was so slippery. I had my heart in my mouth all day.

The second one scared me to death!!!!
at least the music suddenly goes silent about 2/3 of the way thru
The thing is with cross country is that all the fences are solid so the horses can’t knock a fence ya know
😰😱😰😱😰😱😰😱. The first one I like POOR GIRL AND POOR HORSE

How can a refusal or a fall be good?
What's the title of the song ?
you were watching it on your computer
I always get worried that the horses may injure themselves when they stumble. I noticed how heavily the one horse was breathing. They must be exhausted with that amount of cantering and jumping. Poor horses... just for human entertainment..
poor Pippa- she was going so well- what a shame about stupid bad footing in the pond :(
I just hope that all the horses and riders are OK. I wouldn't jump my cob at this level. *I'LL STICK TO CROSS POLES AND STRAIGHTS THANKS*
Like wtf.
What they don't tell you is that on an average, 10-12 horses are killed doing cross country and 4 -5 riders die every year.
Source?
Just Google "3 day eventing deaths". The sources are plentiful.
I can't watch it entirely...I freak out everytime I saw something like this. It's too painful to watch.
You recorded these off another one
the last rider dident look like she had any expireance at all she was leaning on the horses neck and she wasent holding on to the rains properly but im not sure why the horse fell if the girl doent know how to ride properly well then she shouldent be riding in such a top level show. That my advice im not saying to take it but if you dont know how to ride well your putting yourself and your horse in danger
There are 3 obstacles in that video what should be modify in the whole cross and country world....
I feel so bad for the horses😭
I don't know how anyone would find that horses falling and riders falling I'd funny I mean the horse could get relay hurt I mean I'm crying just watching this this is soo sad
horse ! no ! :((
2:09 When mum says to go to school.
it seems to my that the riders need more training or a better regulated course .... that water just is nuts
kelli totten you dont know what you're talking about. there are SO many riders and horses at Rolex and most of them get thru the course just fine. this video just makes it seem like a lot. these riders and horses are the best in the sport, the course is created to challenge them.
kelli totten need more training? These are the top eventers in the world! You don't get better eventers than that
Whatever you think is fine.....in untitled to my opinion just like you are!
kelli totten what are you on about? You didn't even know what event this was and its one of the biggest eventing events in the world! Shows how much you know
Erm, i said Badminton, i meant Burghley... but, uh, ditto with Badminton, or Rolex, or Pau, or Adelaide.... you get the picture
OH NOOOOO!!!!😨😱😲
Loads of these turns and jumps are near impossible for a horse to do one after the other successfully. Of course it is possible and it’s meant to be really difficult but I think it’s too risky sometimes for both horse and rider
Does everybody else think all of these falls/wrecks are acceptable in a equine sport?
My horse means more to me than that, I would never risk those fall. Obviously it is not about care for the horse. So I love the falls, people only, did u get hurt, oh so sad, haha. Hope u were, because too many horses r hurt in this sport, what just for fun, to win. Karma's a -itch. Hope it finds u.
Poor Sonja Johnson and Benny
Future Liberty I was standing to the side when she came off. Sonja sat up and said "aw crap". Gave everyone around a good laugh
Haha. I love her!!! hahaha. She is a legend
einfach grausam ...
~
For them the feeling is the same how we feel when involved in a serious car smash! It's a horrific shock to the system.
~
Even though I grew up eventing as a rider I am inclined to find it more and more unacceptably unfair on the horse. The tiny numbers of highly skilled riders and proficient horses that win doesn't make it OK for the rest that don''t.
~
"Eventing" has meant to have become better but it's just not across the board, new jump designs and guiding times have done little to halt the number and even type of falls in some cases. Lets face it which ever way we look at it the idea is to eliminate horses, however this is an unacceptably dangerous way to go about it. People should be able to risk their necks if they want to but to expect horses to do the same is just not sporting.
~
With gathering public and rider awareness in how horses should be trained how they should be kept and what we expect from them Im quite honestly wondering if eventing hasn't simply come to it's end in the progression of all things equestrian 21st Century AD. Is there still a place in society for this kind of treatment of a horse?
~
Whether the "sport" shouldn't just be banned outright on welfare grounds is a serious consideration.
~
We cannot be stoic and philosophical about inflicting pain suffering and stress on animals, we need to do something about ending it completely and that's all there is to it. I feel half measures are simply going to excelerate its banning, unlitmately.
Horses before humans:)
why do xc riders sit so far back all the time, esp during jumps?
Because they are going down hill, it's harder for the horse to flip bumdass
Ridiculously dangerous for the rider and the horse.
those poor, poor horses
That second one looks like he could have broken his neck - poor horse.
Crafty Animals badminton this year was worse!! That vicarage vee jump at badminton was just unnecessary!
Laura BLair Yeah the vicarage vee was awful. I love Badminton but I think that jump was horrible! Way too many accidents there
I love three-day eventing, but it is ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL holding these trials under these weather conditions. It's one thing to hold jumping trials in the rain in an arena with better footing and where the jumps give. But on a cross country course ?!? Aside from the unforgiving jumps, the footing is oviously sh**t for the poor horses, making this even unnecessarily dangerous to both animals and riders. Shame on the organizers.
poor horses I can't bear to watch
poor horse riders that happend to me
Denk nach, bevor du was schreibst.
Mussdassein?
Lol when the horse is having a odd disposition toward the jump but they ram him through anyway
It's called a rotational fall, a 13 yr old died at Prelim level this year because of that, not funny
3:58 is way too dangerous for the legs of the horse. put some bushes or something
😱
I hate it when riders don't let go of the reins it must hurt the horses mouth!!😥
Anabelle Crickmore It prevents them running off, if you were in an open field you wouldn't want your horse wandering places you don't want it going, this is the same thing, you don't want them running around when competitors could be riding and then be at risk.
