I used to be an equestrian, I was born with an infinite passion for horses, I took horse riding lessons, started to compete as a child, then I started doing eventing, coaching students, training horses, all this over a 20 year period. One day I was teaching and I seriously started to doubt the ethics of what we are doing to those animals. In the end, it came down to teaching people who just want to win ribbons and championships, some with money and doing this for social standing, once in a while someone who really loved horses but generally it is a very egotistical pursuit. My coach tried to push me to drug my horse after the cross country, to be sure he would pass the vet test the next day... I didn't do it. I also worked with race horses and the horrors that take place there in the name of money are unspeakable. I quit it all after 20 years, starting at 9 years of age, and quitting at 29. I love horses free, free to be what they are not some instrument to ego gratification. Do you really need to risk their lives? all for a ribbon or a trophy? this video shows incredibly treacherous obstacles, and not so qualified riders... it breaks my heart
H e a r t B r e a k e r The horse was fine he competed weeks after that, if anything I’d be more worried about the rider I mean he did just have an entire 1200 pound animal land on his back and sit there
H e a r t B r e a k e r I had checked to make sure all horses were not injured after the competition. I think he either just couldn't get up or he was in shock. There was also a clip straight after this showing the horse and rider walking away.
It looks more like the horse knows the rider is under him and is waiting for help, if he kept rolling the rider would be done for. It happen to me once, I flip with my horse over a jump, I landed under her, she threw herself to the side to avoid me.
I love cross country and I love the gopro video's etc but this course and many others seem way and way to difficult. I know it's a high level of cross country but this is too difficult.
Lot of tough jumps! A lot of these horses are remarkably calm about a fall or a spill, though. They just kinda walk or wait for their riders to get back up. Shows the relationship they have.
Actually, stunned is more like the truth. When a horse hangs a leg or has a rotational fall they, like humans, are blindsided. Don't anybody kid themselves these horses walked away in onr piece mentally and/or physically. I evented for 10+ years and horses are affected by those bad things that happen accidentally or by bad riding.
I think Badminton Horse Trials' course designers make some very attractive fences, but sometimes, they just don't seem that safe. I know they've since introduced frangible pins on these fences, and rightly so, but they're oftentimes still ostentaciously wide or large. Do they really need to be that big and daunting? Must be scary when coming off over one of these fences.
What a brutal course so many falls, refusals, run outs, horses falling all at the same lot of jumps, that was a tad hard to watch but I definitely take my hat off to all the riders competing and their horses giving it their all 😊
Well,I have been riding English style for almost 40 years. Although I started with jumping, of course amateur lebel, in the last years I only enjoyed long rides in the country with.my beloved horse. I believe both horse and rider must have good time and relax and no rider should risk a horse just for his own interest
It's fascinating to see how the majority of the horses already make mistakes before the actual fall. You can tell when they are having a bad run. Most of the time it's the riders who fail to guide the horse and ride the horse in my opinion. Most of the time the horse and/or rider can't see the strides/distances, so the horse panics and stumbles, like humans would too! Same with speed. If you push your horse too much or too little, it's going to have a hard time clearing fences.
@2:20 wow that could’ve been so much worse! I get worried for my horse is she rolls her ankle in a miss step, I would be a wreck if I didn’t cross country. These horses are amazing athletes, some of these jumps made me wonder what they were thinking with design though.
Moral of the story: The more you kick, yell at and hit your horse before a jump, the higher the chances of a refusal or injury. 3:41 Check how when the horse gets up he moves away from the rider, probably because he knew he was in trouble. Smh some of these people don't deserve horses. 4:53 speaks for itself 5:25 I love the little pat to say it's ok Lol I'm just putting all my time stamps here 6:46 LMAO WHY WAS THAT OLD WOMAN SMILING 7:33 Clearly no care for the horse with that temper tantrum 8:28 Made my blood boil 8:41 OH gosh were they both ok?

It is amazing how powerful these animals are but really hitting them over these difficult jumps is just a bit over the top. Horses have some hard vision in which they estimate the distances and it’s so amazing how most of these horses clear such huge heights and distances
Good comment re horses' vision. Recently a book was published noting in it a study regarding how a horse's vision works. Turns out they have pretty poor vision, e.g. show jumpers which consistently want to position their heads high coming up to a jump. It also explains (sorta) about their tendencies to spook at dangerous objects like a wayward leaf or a menacing pebble.
2:32 Turns to smack horse and gets hella left behind Edit: His whole course is TERRIBLE. Flailing arms, (I’m afraid if he flaps them any faster he’ll fly right off the horse!) pumping body, (I know what drivers seat is but that was excessive) and the yanking! Oh the yanking! That poor horse’s face! This isn’t even something I would expect from a preliminary! Let alone a 5*!
Very tough trials for horses & I don't think it is ok for horses & riders, especially the water points seems insane for horses to cover. Is there any limit where we can limit our race & thirst to win?
ok, the fact that most horses knocked over, flipped, or refused the same exact jumps probably means they aren't suitable jumps. I know it's high level but the exact same jumps got refused or knocked over by almost all the horses.
When I was doing cross country, the jumps were fully solid. No giveaway . This is a really great idea because I had a bad accident because of it and am still paying For it today. (Horse was okay, I cushioned his fall)
Jumping is tons of fun when you have a balanced and eager horse and a relatively reasonable course. I’m a jumper so I do things around 3’ for shows but I’m working up to four feet at home. This looks like the kind of course I’d never make my horse go through though.
I was so surprised when looking for a horse fail compilation (because I couldn’t sleep due to being ill), I clicked on the first one I saw and it starts with a K-pop song aka Seventeen-Hit 🤩 Feeling a bit better now😊
that's immediately what I thought, no trying to hang on and unbalancing the horse, straight out the side door and the horse clearly loves the rider cause it stops straight away. that's proper horsemanship
Seeing this makes me realize why I only ride recreational. I listen to my horse, and I don't go for crazy jumps or events. I'm not saying I'm a perfect rider, but I try my best to make it comfortable for my horse by riding bitless and without spurs etc..
On peut voir a quel point c'est dangereux pour les chevaux comme pour les humains. Je pense que les obstacles sont trop compliqué pour les chevaux... Ce qui donnes toutes ces chutes dangereuses pour les chevaux et leurs cavaliers.
2:29 is the worst rider, they were not prepared to jump and too focused on the horse going fast enough, 2nd, they had bad jump form and started pumping their arms and trying to make the horse faster with that motion, 3rd they didn’t concentrate on the jump and always looked back to see if they made a good jump. I hope this person improves their skills as a rider because with what they just did they can put themselves in danger and their horse also some of the people riding they were pulling their reins back when they got up to the jump or when they jumped is also very bad because it will slow the horse down. Most if this video very hard jumps and hills going up and down and multiple jumps at one time. I agree that some of these courses were to hard for the rider and horse to accomplish.
It always warms my heart to see that some of the riders give their horses pets after they fail a jump 🥰 reminds me that there are still people in this sport who actually love their horses.
Manny jumps are way to hard to “see” for the horses so they don’t know how high and wide they have to jump and most of the riders are riding very poor, especially how they are sitting on their horses and how they support their horses (more not support them, or even make it harder for the horse)
At 71 I stick to dressage, but in my younger day's use to jump, had a horse that would jump 6 feet to clear a twig. Freaked me out, but boy he NEVER refused, sold him on though because he needed a braver rider. Chicken jumps are enough for me to stop boredom of dressage.
why do they make cross country courses so challenging when the riders clearly are used to smaller jumps, therefore accidently put the horse off balance before the jump. there were so many instances where the striding was so completely off that there was no possible way the horses could have jumped the jump well. of course i am not meaning that the riders aren't good ones, i'm sure they probably are , but this level is just way too challenging for them and their horses.

This is horrific... bad riders, terrified horses and really dangerous falls...
I personally would love to see you jump this course. They are hardly bad riders, just inexperienced as a lot of them are Eventing 5* for the first time
Right, well ok... let me put it this way: if this is the standard of what's good in cross-country, then it's an abusive sport, on a par with racing, steeplechase and that disgusting thing that's done to the Tennessee Walker. Imagine putting your horse in such extreme danger in the name of "fun" and "sport". :(
I agree the riders look a bit in- experienced. And the horses are obviously scared and confused
@@DutchIsraeli This isn’t a standard. It was a bad day for a lot of riders and it’s never going to be a perfect day where everyone jumps clear. It’s the reality of horses and Burghley! Like I said, you jump round Burghley and never put a foot wrong and then come speak to me
@@tauma_the_goat7156 like I said, this is abusive.
Poor horses trying their hearts out over a ridiculously difficult and dangerous course, is this entertainment?
I am an eventer… meaning I do cross country. However, even I draw the line when it becomes permanently damaging or dangerous to the horse. I never hope to jump this high as I don’t feel it is fair to them at all!
Yep, it is..
0:39 you can see the rider pat his horse on the neck, and the rider was not mad or disappointed in his horse. Such a true rider 💚
So impressed at the horses bravery in taking some of these!
The jump at 8:41 gives me so much anxiety :( odd to see a horse just stop moving
I believe that was a rotational fall sadly...and tbh I think the horse has been put down...it looked like it broke it's hind leg
It happen to me once, I flip with my horse over a jump, I landed under her, she threw herself to the side to avoid me.
that whole crash was so scary
Thanks for bringing two of my most favourite things together: Kpop and and cross-country

It’s awful to see people using horses mouths to carry them over long jumps that they set the horses up for to begin with. 😥😢
They are fine they get great treatment and care and they love going over the jumps you can tell how excited they are until they get hurt.
@@SCAREofAL yeah it’s all fun and games until someone breaks a leg or worse…
Yes. Some of these jumps are soo dangerous. I would never want to expose my horse to such danger.
@@FranciscaAVior yeah, Cross country isn’t my favorite.
@@SCAREofAL Yeah right and probably have some good old nerve damage from all the yanking on the bits.
I love cross country and I love the gopro video's etc but this course and many others seem way and way to difficult. I know it's a high level of cross country but this is too difficult.
agreed
Lot of tough jumps! A lot of these horses are remarkably calm about a fall or a spill, though. They just kinda walk or wait for their riders to get back up. Shows the relationship they have.
they probably didn't want to run away cause they were so exhausted from this very difficult course
Actually, stunned is more like the truth. When a horse hangs a leg or has a rotational fall they, like humans, are blindsided. Don't anybody kid themselves these horses walked away in onr piece mentally and/or physically. I evented for 10+ years and horses are affected by those bad things that happen accidentally or by bad riding.
those oxers are so ducking wideeeee!!!! my horse would literally think it’s a bounce
Absolutely agree. I know one horse died (it was even the level under this) and the rider said the horse mistook the jump as a bounce
At what point do we stop and think “maybe these jumps are dangerous and unrealistically demanding on these animals?”
Yesss, when you're both a horse person and love kpop. Your music taste is immaculate.
I really appreciate that girl that gave her horse a pat even though it refused.
I’m seeing many problems at a couple of fences. Speaks to me of bad jump design
@2:20 wow that could’ve been so much worse! I get worried for my horse is she rolls her ankle in a miss step, I would be a wreck if I didn’t cross country. These horses are amazing athletes, some of these jumps made me wonder what they were thinking with design though.
. 38 perfect way to handle the refusal. He didn’t beat his horse with the crop, instead he reassured him and tried again.
Moral of the story: The more you kick, yell at and hit your horse before a jump, the higher the chances of a refusal or injury.
3:41 Check how when the horse gets up he moves away from the rider, probably because he knew he was in trouble. Smh some of these people don't deserve horses.
4:53 speaks for itself
5:25 I love the little pat to say it's ok
Lol I'm just putting all my time stamps here
6:46 LMAO WHY WAS THAT OLD WOMAN SMILING
7:33 Clearly no care for the horse with that temper tantrum
8:28 Made my blood boil
8:41 OH gosh were they both ok?
the ‘temper tantrum’ at 7:33 isn’t that at all. horse is clearly unhurt and what do you expect her to do? run after a galloping horse as if she can catch it. i’m sure you would hit the ground a couple times too if you had spent hundreds of thousands on travelling across the world and training all your life to compete at this level just to take a tumble at a simple skinny.
@@islamcginnis1926 its stupid to put so much money on so crazy competition. You know the risk, you dont whine whne you fail. Most likely, finances of that person werent hurt. As i asuume only filthy rich (and stupid) is wasting money on such stupidity, that also seems to be animal abuse.
@@alicjamalgorzatabrygida6000 not animal abuse, can guarantee these horses are the best well looked after you could find. also not just money but people train all their lives to compete at this level, obviously you would be disappointed at failing off, just like a footballer is disappointed when they miss a goal.
@@islamcginnis1926 This comment is kinda old and I don't remember typing it. I do agree that I worded it wrong, it wasn't really a temper tantrum. However I still think it's unnecessary to get angry if you're well aware of the risks in the sport.
1:47 well, the rider didn’t fail with ripping the horses face of
The one with the stud getting stuck in his girth gives me the heebeeejeeviess
Some of those riders are absolutely brutal on their horses.
4:12 that first jump was so iffy already I would've called it right there. That course is nuts.
number 22s horse literally gave so many signs that "Hey this is not my day" AND SHE DIDN'T LISTEN. I could see that rotational fall from a mile away.
Cross country is a scary ass sport. it’s hard to imagine that people did this before they had collapsible jumps👀
I like how he gave his horse pat pf reassurance after the refusal in thr 2nd clip. Horse always first
That was prolly one of the only ones that I smiled and was happy
I know they have to make it challenging but Dang… That one corner jump.
It is amazing how powerful these animals are but really hitting them over these difficult jumps is just a bit over the top. Horses have some hard vision in which they estimate the distances and it’s so amazing how most of these horses clear such huge heights and distances
British eventing, in particular, has taken to handing out penalties for improper use of whips!
@@lizmaslin5258 Yeah i know what their vision is like i completed my horse biology lol
2:32 Turns to smack horse and gets hella left behind
Edit: His whole course is TERRIBLE.
The horse was so small, let alone the rider was ripping on the horse's face while telling it to go faster.
@@flopsybunnies5841 yes!
Very tough trials for horses & I don't think it is ok for horses & riders, especially the water points seems insane for horses to cover. Is there any limit where we can limit our race & thirst to win?
The person at 2:34 doesn’t need a horse they whipped it in mid air
ok, the fact that most horses knocked over, flipped, or refused the same exact jumps probably means they aren't suitable jumps. I know it's high level but the exact same jumps got refused or knocked over by almost all the horses.
The 2019 course was at some points way to intense, some angles are also almost impossible
This is an extreme corse! I hope all the horses get all the treats in the world!
That white fence looks hella dangerous with how many horses straight up fell ON their riders for that one.
When I was doing cross country, the jumps were fully solid. No giveaway . This is a really great idea because I had a bad accident because of it and am still paying
For it today. (Horse was okay, I cushioned his fall)
Heck them riders need nerves of steel for those jumps. I’ll stick with 2.3 😉
Jumping is tons of fun when you have a balanced and eager horse and a relatively reasonable course. I’m a jumper so I do things around 3’ for shows but I’m working up to four feet at home. This looks like the kind of course I’d never make my horse go through though.
Those jumps were huge it was still amazing
Not me getting distracted by Hit, Clap, and Dramarama lol
I was so surprised when looking for a horse fail compilation (because I couldn’t sleep due to being ill), I clicked on the first one I saw and it starts with a K-pop song aka Seventeen-Hit 🤩 Feeling a bit better now😊
Buck’s fall scared me more than the others
I love the fact that they are masking more jumps be able to fall down it’s so much safer
0:48 what a saint letting go of the reigns and jumping off not falling on its neck and holding onto the reigns while on the ground! :D
that's immediately what I thought, no trying to hang on and unbalancing the horse, straight out the side door and the horse clearly loves the rider cause it stops straight away. that's proper horsemanship
@@isabelbowes4547 it was also an amazing emergency dismount!
@@tyrasearay3683 yeah! theyre certainly exceptional equestrians!

As a hobby horser, I can relate to the “not happening today” that the horses are feeling
Rotational fall. Horse and rider lucky to survive
Seeing this makes me realize why I only ride recreational. I listen to my horse, and I don't go for crazy jumps or events. I'm not saying I'm a perfect rider, but I try my best to make it comfortable for my horse by riding bitless and without spurs etc..
2:33 they hit there horse with their crop and hit the horse quite bare they deserved to fall of that was not professional riding
Schleichnstuff 2020 The horse deserved to be smacked, besides she only smacked her horse once with her crop.
You know the course is too much when you can make a whole video of all the fails and refusals. Also, that rotational fall😬
This course is so technical. I doubt your going to see most of theses elements in the next course, way to many problems over the same questions.
The course designers at these big competitions are forgetting they are horses not machines.
Some of these riders need to know when their horses have had enough. Not to mention some of these jumps are unreasonably dangerous
On peut voir a quel point c'est dangereux pour les chevaux comme pour les humains. Je pense que les obstacles sont trop compliqué pour les chevaux... Ce qui donnes toutes ces chutes dangereuses pour les chevaux et leurs cavaliers.
Example at 2:12 Say no horses were injured…. Right.
I'm sorry if i'm wrong but some of these horses just seem more exhausted than they should be...
3:01 i love how she hung onto the horses neck for dear life XD
Me casually watching and then here seventeen's song clap. I'm living that was a nice surprise
*Clicks on vid* OH HELLO MY KPOP FRIENDS
Love the mix of kpop and horses
4:46 WHY do you have to slap your horse after it fell/ almost fell over a jump and made a good recovery? WHY?
That horse at 6:41 landed a jump on 1 front foot!!!! Amazing save by the horse...
I slowed down the footage and it looks like the horse got his hoof stuck on the girth or some straps down there😟
@@hockey_n_horses1181 yh true
It always warms my heart to see that some of the riders give their horses pets after they fail a jump 🥰 reminds me that there are still people in this sport who actually love their horses.
6:56 .... The woman in the left corner was literally just filming or taking pictures, while the horse and man fell onto the ground- Like my goodness.
0:42 the horse was heavily hit BEFORE he refused. Soooo. No the rider wasn't "a hero".
I love the riders who stopped or slowed to be sure the horses were good. Very good sportsmanship and horsemanship on their part
I did not expect kpop as the music of choice, I very much approve
Manny jumps are way to hard to “see” for the horses so they don’t know how high and wide they have to jump and most of the riders are riding very poor, especially how they are sitting on their horses and how they support their horses (more not support them, or even make it harder for the horse)
3:43 awww he got away from her so quickly
And then that stupid loose dog scared him...... poor pony
Allison Brizburk I know!! People who can’t control their dogs SHOULDN’T BE AT EVENTS!! I don’t understand why people don’t get it!
My respect to the riders who pat their horse instead of whipping them when they fail a jump📈📈📈📈
the person about 2 mins i with the red cap and bays two point is just… wow!
I'm watching that white fence as 3 horses fall over it then it finally gives way for the 4th...like wth?!
why do they make cross country courses so challenging when the riders clearly are used to smaller jumps, therefore accidently put the horse off balance before the jump. there were so many instances where the striding was so completely off that there was no possible way the horses could have jumped the jump well. of course i am not meaning that the riders aren't good ones, i'm sure they probably are , but this level is just way too challenging for them and their horses.
This course is dangerous. A downhill jump right ahead of a tree? Really? Is one of the horses named Sunny Bono?
0:37 - the chicken trying to take off XD
I'm honestly so confused... Flapping your hands DEFINITELY makes the horse go over the jump lol
