👉 Check out the Lorn Sample Library: www.samplesbyvanity.com/products/lorn-in-the-style-of-vol-25 Hey guys, This was my most ambitious artist breakdown to date. Lorn really is a force of nature, one that has taught me a lot throughout researching and compiling everything I have learned into an hour long video. I definitely struggled, but I've always found that to be a sign of growth. Even though I only hit around 70% of my vision for this tutorial, I'm happy with the finished product, and I hope you are too!
To me, Lorn seems to be a true, pure textural audio, visceral and ethereally beastlike. Somehow a perfect merge of Synthetic and Organic, a true cyborg, who hasn't forgotten the emotions of old. His music feels like a portal to another reality.
Damn this was timed perfectly. Lorn himself literally just asked the community if we would be interested in a tutorial series but you beat him to the punch. Good look. Can’t wait to dive into this.
I did see that. I'm only an imitation, but I think I speak for everyone when I say we'd all love that. Hope this tutorial is helpful in the meantime :)
Honestly I think you did a great job with this. Lorn really is his own unique form of sound design and song structure. Like the master who knows that the rules only apply to mortal beings. The rules only apply when you don't know what Lorn knows. He breaks and bends the rules to fit his sound as if he's commanding the quantum particles themselves. Cheers.
I've been mesmerized by Lorn's music since I first heard Ask the Dust the year it came out. There are so many layers and so many nuances that you can notice something new with each listen. You said it right when you called him a force of nature.
You did an amazing job honoring that sound, I cannot begin to understand the difficultly you went through because of how unique that sound is. Outstanding work!
Thank you! I wanted to honor him by making something worthwhile of his name (as far as imitations go) and hopefully help those who are inspired by his production.
Wow this is absolutely incredible. By far one of the best tutorials I've ever watched (up there with my personal favorite: your Burial tutorial)! Your attention to detail is insanely impressive and your tracks always sound so amazing. Welcome back!
Also, a tutorial in the style of Aphex Twin would be awesome as well-in particular, his more ambient, experimental techno-style music like "Xtal," "Tha," and pretty much the rest of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Volume II. I love how he combines so many different elements in unpredictable ways, similar to Burial. He once said something along the lines of being "addicted to making noises," which I think with your crazy talent for sound design would make for an amazing video.
Ah, that’s kind of you to say, thank you! Aphex Twin is definitely on the cards, my only worry with someone like that is agreeing on what his ‘sound’ is. The sheer amount of music that he has released makes it hard to weave a thread throughout his sonic worlds. Perhaps picking a few album’s or series would be the best approach.
I love the quote "a song watching its childhood home burning down" because his tracks sound very much like a song crying. It's like he records a song and then wonders what it would sound like if he made it cry. He makes a song and then dismembers its favorite teddy bear in front of it.
Killer track, great tuition. Unbelievable that the video is free content considering the effort involved in making something like this. Awesome - I bought the sounds in a heartbeat.
Great video, my dude. Very, very in depth. Thank u for sharing ur research and knowledge. I must say though, apart from some of the slight peak adjustments, the master sounded way fuller and more like Lorns before matching the freq spectrum (atleast on my monitors) - still, great job on this.
I remember when the first " In the style of " Pack came out, I took the whole Journey with you! You are a super talented musician and I always feel like I'm learning something from your knowledge !
Wow man you killed it!! Ive always been intrigued by lorn since the early 2000s paltalk chat room days where turntablists would get on to session..lorn would get on and scratch over his beats its crazy to see how he progressed so much from then to develop a completely unique style.
Man, I can't even describe how inspirational this video is. Even though you didn't go through all the tricks Lorn uses for obvious reasons, the quotation and research included is such a nice touch. Thank you for this.
Bro. I remember years I'm talking eons ago when I first heard lorn I googled everywhere to find wtf the genre was and now your explanation makes sense why I couldn't find it. Cos I recall at the time I was looking for tutorials to create music like that. Btw your track here sounds a lot like tattered flag
Dude, saying my music sounds even remotely like Lorn is the highest compliment you could pay me, so thank you! Lorn is truly one of a kind; his genre is his own, which is part of the reason tutorials on his sound are hard to come by. I can't even put into words how much I love this video. It's so holistic and complete. It not only shows the technical and compositional side of things, but what I love especially is that you use Lorns vision and philosophy (by doing research and quoting him) to understand him on a deeper and more conceptual level.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! I’ve always found the philosophy to be the more interesting aspect of an artist. Lorn’s been kind enough to share so much of this online, I don’t think a video about him would be complete without it.
I saved this video ages ago and am just getting around to watching it. I think it's a quite a bit past my skill level, but I'll keep plugging away at it! I shouldn't be surprised that Lorn's sound is so carefully crafted. After all, it's ultimately tone that defines his music, IMO. MF has vibes for days. I think you truly did his music justice, and that is no small feat. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words! I agree with all of your points. For me, Lorn is the goat of production. I'm planning to revisit his sound again in the future as I think he requires a series, rather than just a single video.
