Yes yes, I know it, but he said on Untrue, no? I think that he nowadays uses a standard DAW, I personally think it would be a total mess to do Truant, Rough Sleeper or later eps with Soundforge, and in fact nonsense, maybe I'm wrong, but I think the soundforge use is part of the mistery on Burial.
you have a point, but since he's master of his craft he probably don't see it like nonsense. Yeah he probably worked on other daws as well just like any other artist
great video, im a little obsessed with burial so have gone through this process youve done over and over, even down to scouring freesound haha. few notes to add, burial doesnt have his delay/echo time synced on anything, he also compresses his vocals after his reverb/delay which gives it a suction kind of sound when it goes fully wet. and final thing on the drums, burial is actually a very versatile producer, you demonstrated here probably his most signature style. if you listen to something like Pirates, which might be his most club-centric track, or his longform style tracks, he generally plays with a lot more high end frequencies. i think the hardest thing to nail on burial is his huge reeses, and only lately think i have realized he even runs his reese samples through formant shifting, like his vocals. great job though, you nailed the ghost hardware drums.
Likewise obsessed with Burial here, but still new to audio production. I found Vital gives a good Reese bass, there are some free presets out there which saved me some time, Dune 3 also gives a nice Reese. I'd have to look into it but I suspect the original Reese was made in Massive or Serum. Regular UK Garage clearly shows the parentage, a few other great Future Garage people are Synkro, Pensees, Manu Shrine, Vacant, Sepalcure, Sorrow. A new one I like that is also great: Phelian. If you love Burial you will like all those I expect. I'm starting to see how to put my own twist on it.
@@Chunda8 ya, same, I started during covid and started to post on SoundCloud and kinda quickly discovered I can not copy Burial and did my own thing instead :).

This is my first time seeing a video of yours and I want to thank you for making this. You’ve obviously put in a lot of work and it shows. This is a great video, and just the right time for me as my recent work has been taking several cues from untrue. Subscribed.
Dope video! I think another one that could be interesting is a video on Boards of Canada's sound! Especially they're drums, synths and use of natural effects in their music.
The synths have been covered loads of times, it’s the drums that are so hard to make, because they’re often samples of one of the brothers playing and then cut up and re put together, similar to how Radiohead did the king of limbs
Such a sick video bro. I’ve been an Indy/rock artist for 25 years and my tunes sound nothing like Burial. Yet he has been my favorite artist for 10 years. It’s all in the feel. Thanks for taking the time.
Holy shiit. I had heard a Burial song a years ago and have been searching everyyywhere ever since... So thanks! Would love to see a tutorial on Kevin Parker or Tame Impala in the future. Great tutorial as always.
Great stuff! I especially like the fact that you get into the philosophy of Burials style, while giving examples through the technical aspects of the individual tracks. And a lovely piece of music overall! Very thorough and informative! Thank you!
Vanity, you're tutorials are among the most influential video sources for me to improve my production skills, thanks a lot for that! Would love to see a Four Tet deconstruction one day. :)
Thanks for such a thoughtful and thought provoking tutorial. I've spent a lot of time with Burial (his music!), and have noticed many of the things you cover, but also missed quite a lot that you've now shown me. Of course his tracks vary a lot, and he is still breaking new ground, and you couldn't possibly cover everything even in 40 mins (+your work in preparing the track) but some of the additional things I noticed in Untrue were: the use of silence, pauses, false starts and false endings; sudden surprises through withholding and then giving back a reverb tail; sample fragments presented repeatedly but at widely differing volumes; and although a limited number of samples may be used, they are juxtaposed together differently to exploit their potential. Thanks again!
I had been wanting to make these garage/2 Step style beats for a very long time this tutorial was very helpful i even got the sample library and it was definitely worth it!
Another genius aspect of Burial and Future Garage in general: I back into this genre from the purely ambient side: Brian Eno and William Basinski. Something I was hoping was to take that sense of timeless space and depth that ambient has, biut then introduce other musical elements without losing that feeling. Future Garage genius is closest to accomplishing that- you can tell a story and have the music move, but you still keep most of that ambient soundscape. Now lets see what happens if we use that as a starting point, maybe work in some neoclassical, a little trip-hop, a little industrial. In other words I think there are immense possibilities to develop this genre that are unexplored, looking at it in a film scoring way can really take it forward I hope.
Your concept of creating the "world" od ur track is one of the greatest revelations musically to me in recent. Whilst im trying to make some more energetic heavy stuff, ive always loved the atmosphere in Future Garage but also outside it in artists like 2814 and Boards of Canada and yet I cant like achieve that atmosphere on my own, but i never thought about the concept of just actually treating the ambiencr and atmosphere as a "world" independent of the song.
I think the most interesting fact about Burials production is that he actually does not even use a DAW but Soundforge which is merely a sound editor and doesn't have any grid/bpm settings.
in terms of drums, there is a sound that is not explained, eg 28:10 in the end of the square. that bit would be worth clarifying as it makes the style as well.
i unironically kinda don't see the point of this so i went in expecting this to not sound like burial but the demo track really sounds like burial. also you wre clear and stuf, this is a kinda good tutorial on what makes burial great, and you flat out state that the only burial is burial, so you're a good man in my eyes jarbus.
exactly, especially the sounds of the Nymphs EP's is achieved with some very sophisticated mixing... we don't need a tutorial for 'Mi Mujer'-alike tunes, hahaha
I third this! or Maya Jane Coles (somehow no one has done a decent one online so far, they're all poor sound qualities) Ricardo Villalobos styles or David August (The Acid Remix) style. Nice video btw, one new follower :)
