I've done one before. It was in the early 2000's. I put a B16A VTEC into an '88 Integra 4 Door (trunk not hatch) It was difficult but it was made a lot easier by the Hasport engine mount kit and their axle kit. I did get a shop to do some of the crazy work though but the motor just dropped right in and bolted up without issue because of the Hasport equipment.
Tier 1 engine swap for my first time. The hardest part was catching the fluids out of places I didn’t know they were gonna come out of other than that really easy and straight forward :) G35 coupe.
I would say my swap is a tier 4. I have a 1987 pontiac fiero with a honda k24 in it. Custom poly engine mounts. Custom shift bracket, custom axles because it's a fwd drivetrain in the rear. Fully custom rear suspension, toyota based. Hardest part? WIRING, holy shit
Not my car, but I helped a buddy build/swap a 4-rotor into a Miata. The swap part was fine, but refitting the apex seals was and absolute nightmare, mostly because we didn't realize they were placed improperly until after we tried to test fire the motor. Basically had to go through the entire process twice because of one little mistake.

I have a truck, it sat for maybe 10 years waiting for my finances to catch up with the project. I finally said screw it, I'm just going to get it done how I can for now and in the future I can do it for real. So now I'm driving my straight 6 to v8 swapped m715 around and it cost minimal, like less than 1500 bucks to swap it. You can do it for cheap if you let go of any high end visions you may have and just build to your budget. It's possible to do, make some more fabricator friends to learn from, find some car people with extra parts laying around, get a cheap donor car and hack it up. Like my truck is to me, your project may not be what you really dreamed about but you'll be doing it, building your skills and enjoying what you've built. When money catches up you'll be in a better place to use it wisely because you'll have been through the process already.

Jack Zobe is the whole reason I feel comfortable picking up the maintenance on my wife and I's cars and why I want a project car, and Donut is the whole reason I'm becoming a full-on car guy, and I couldn't be happier about either. I went from only watching rock crawling stuff to loving stock car racing, japan's tuner culture, and all the other stuff they talk about all the time (except hatchbacks)
Dude, same. I always did DIY on my cars cause I don't have the $$$ for the repair work but I always just saw it as a hassle or chore (mostly cause my cars have always been rust buckets where the head of every bolt snaps off). But now I'm so into it that I was planning out an engine rebuild on my Corolla for a future supercharge. Unfortunately a relative has passed and that means shuffling around the family assets. My Corolla will go to my cousin and I will inherit my grandfather's 05 Camry. As it turns out, the 2AZ-FE in it is very turbo capable. So I'm excited to start planning and installing bits and pieces for the eventual upgrade.
Til you smoked by my turbo 91 Integra rs turbo (hatchback), then you'd be like "damn I want one of those" lol. Engine swapped to JDM B18B w/custom turbo build.

I love how realistic you guys are about timescales and costs. One of the things that grinds my gears is people on web forums BS'ing about how they can do "such-and-such" engine swap in an afternoon. Or claiming stuff like "Oh swapping a V8 in is easy. All you have to do is..." Anyone who's _actually done_ these sorts of things knows they always take significantly longer than you anticipate, because there are always unforeseen complications.
I did an engine swap literally on the driveway! definitely something you can do yourself, with a decent set of tools and some good planning/organising its an easy job
i wouldnt say its an easy job but with the right tools and knowing what your doing its for sure easier than ppl think. I guess it depends on the engine aswell
I might go so far as to say easier than on a lift. I did my e30 swap to a m42 engine and 6 speed in the driveway left my garage free for the little clean bits. Did my F150 351w swap on a lift in the garage and stuff was everywhere couldn't walk around my floor was strewn with parts I couldn't get into my closet with out moving the engine crane. fiasco
Tier 4 swap, you literally found one of the drivers from Tokyo drift. Seriously immense project and wish I had the time, money (and let's face it, more skill) so I could do this myself.
The bluing and the welds on Will's intake pipe were some of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time. Also I remember the first time C&D had that Miata with a Mustang V6 in it and I thought that was the craziest engine swap anyone would attempt at that level. We were naive in the 90s.
I had to rewind to look at those welds again. Beautiful. I remember Ford did sell a kit to put a Cobra motor in a Focus and that was just insane to me. Especially because it used the stock focus brakes lmao
I love how the tier 4 guy is so calmly talking about how the turbo is on it's way out and everything else on the car has needed replacing at some point.😎 Then how tier 4 blows out beyond the stat charts 🤣
y'all gotta do a video on state emissions and how car enthusiasts across different states manage to legally street their swaps/custom parts. most people don't realize once they do a tier 3 swap, their ECU won't work and they won't be able to get it through an inspection.
@@500k_e30 literally states forcing you to not have your check engine light on. I've seen some real shitboxes that have no business being on the road here in Arizona with fresh plates, but otherwise amazing cars get stolen (towed) away because of that stupid light. It's insulting.
I did this. I have a mk1 Audi TT with some work done on it custom cooling, racing clutch, ecu flash. Now the VAGcom doesn't save info. So it won't show emissions. BUT I live in rural TX so I just went to a little shop and got inspected.
Depends on my county too in the state sometimes. If my car was hopped up I'd register it in my parent's address in the sticks in a county that doesn't care.
I've done a few swaps and the part that kills me every time is when a swap is supposed to be a "tier 2" or maybe a "tier 3" and creeps into the next tier up. I'm currently looking at a race car in my shop that will either go back to a rebuilt stock engine or is going to jump to tier 4. It was supposed to be a tier 2 but we've realized that there was sufficient variation between cars of the same model and year that none of the stock parts are interchangeable.
Zach, you are my favorite host. You have functional knowledge, and it shows. Donut is my favorite UA-cam channel by far, because of the hosts (James, Jeremiah, Nolan, and Zach). Channel would be lost without y'all.
I've actually seen someone do a same-swap on a VW Golf TDI in under 4 hours without a hoist. Similarly, I've known expert mechanics take over a year to do a swap with an engine that was twice the size of the original. It all depends on the amount of prep and fabrication that's needed.
Yup it's definitely a quick one to do if you know the car. Lol this is why the Mk4 - platforms are awesome and still going strong as daily's. Great car to get into mechanical stuff. The tdis are reliable as shit. Wiring is fairly easy compared to new cars. And importantly Lots of Gurus out there as well willing to share information.
4 hours? You need an older VW. I've seen a "same swap" (actually the same engine out and back in) done in under a minute by four guys on a classic Beetle. And only using a floor jack because the engine goes in from underneath. Apparently this is a competition among VW enthusiasts with a strictly defined set of rules. Granted any "real" engine swap would require transferring over a bunch of components, cooling tins, carburetor, exhaust, and so on, not really a "real world" situation.
Seeing the 1uz in the intro really got my hopes up 🥲 I absolutely love that engine, insanely smooth and reliable, was amazing in my 94 UCF10 LS400. Man I miss that car…
As someone planning out a crazy engine swap project, a super simple video like this is nice to watch, given the amount of extreme detail I've been looking at
It's technically not an engine swap, but I would like to mention Gingium's insane mid-engine swap Eclipse project. He is doing it all by himself with some help, it's awesome!
Gingium is super boring for me.. I don't know, it's just something about his personality that makes me unable to watch his channel religiously... But my god that dude is talented. Literally anything he wants to accomplish, he researches and teaches himself to do it.
My engine swap in my Z was like a tier 1.5. Went from a non turbo engine to twin turbo so had to deal with the intercooler piping and such which wasn’t too bad because the VG30DETT belongs in a 300ZX. Wasn’t same same but wasn’t a “similar swap” because it’s really like going from an NA Supra and putting in a GTE Also, Will is so cool and humble. Had the pleasure of seeing his car at a show hosted by Greddy in Irvine. Thing is absolutely rad and he talked with my dad and I for a while about the process of building the car! Ask him about the gas door and how he and his buddies came up with the idea haha cool story! Cheers!
Jobe was an amazing addition to the gang. Always cool learning stuff from someone that feels like one of the bros. Keep it comin bois, high/low needs some buffer horses.
I did a tier 2 swap on my 1991 H9nda CRX. Dropped in a JDM D15B VTEC because it was the cheapest option, $700 delivered. Hardest part was definitely figuring out the wiring, changing from OBD0 yo OBD1 and adding VTEC. Took me a couple months of weekends, but it was fun.
Really interesting. Would love to see a high-low engine swap on the 350zs! Also you guys should do a series where you buy and build a popular kit car like the df goblin. I think seeing the whole start to finish of a kit build done by donut would be awesome.
My first swap was a b18c in a 93 eg vx. Previous to the swap the most I think I did was like an intake manifold swap besides a bunch of basic maintenance on the car. Took me two weeks to pull the old engine and put the new one in. Another almost three weeks to figure out the harness. After two weeks of research and cutting and sautering I could finally get it running but it would cut out spark intermittently where it was too unreliable to drive. The day I figured out it was a bad pin on a ground on the shock tower connector that ran to the ecu... It wasn't when I started the car and shook the harness and it didn't die. It wasn't when I drove it around the city and it didn't die. It was when I first cracked v tec and shifted from first to second and broke those tires loose I straight up cried. People don't get it when ur driving around an old junker with a treasure under the hood. Something special when u swap an engine. With all that said, I can do the swap in a day now lol.
I believe the hardest part is not getting the motor itself in... It's always the electrical part. Wiring. Ecu adaptations and so forth. The newer the model the more of this becomes a concern. It especially starts getting worse when you try to adapt different parts together on a stock ecu. ( Stand alones can get pricey and aren't always available )
@@Megasteel32no I clearly needed your expertise in the situation. Jee maybe you can build and program something to deal with the hundreds of sensors specific to each application of a build. You seem to be a pro so I'll assume your capable of understanding all parameters of a vehices afr, timing, safety protocols, control modules, comfort modules ETc. Don't forget they're all manufacturer specific. ( + different variations due to market/timeframe/regulations ) I could do all these things or I can be reasonable and utilze parts that stream line the build in order to increase my chance of actually driving it.
I'm currently doing a 5.3ls swap into a 1991 4runner, we're also doing long travel front suspension in the front and a 8.8 rear axle, she's gonna be a beast
I’ve did a “tier 4” back in the early 90’s, installed a 12a in to a 1974 Triumph Spitfire. I did all the motor work and mounts while my mate I raced with did the suspension and drivetrain. The rear diff was truck AF with inboard mounted brakes. The entire frame was no stiffened, doors hollows out to accommodate the sides of the roll-cage. It was already a tight fit, so we made the sides of the cage extend into the doors and Roll hoops over the seats. If I ever do a stage 4 again I think I’ll stay more on the path and just do a Volvo C30 AWD swap and lift it using a moisture of XC70/XC90 suspension components. There’s different levels of “stage 4”, there’s mapped and unmapped. Mapped being it’s been done before and while there no kit there is the knowledge that it’s possible and maybe notes cans advice can be found. The second is off the map, here you are ignore all the warning and advice given to by others and with an idea in hand you forge a path into the unknown. At the time the RX triumph with inboard brakes was never done or we at least never met anyone who didn’t it before. It was very trying but at the end of the day it was simple cause cars of that era didn’t come loaded with computer systems that have locked proprietary software. My bit of advice to others is simply this, if you have to ask to many questions and are looking to purchase tools you don’t own or never used don’t go forward with this. It doesn’t matter if you have $10,000 in your pocket to buy the best well there is that $10,000 will not buy you the years of skill needed to lay a bead that structural. So if you’re looking at doing some sort of crazy swap be at putting all V8 into something that shouldn’t have a V-8 or Lodine 1200 pounds of batteries and I would like to find your vintage car you should think carefully before doing so.
I have a Spitfire in my parents back yard. It was supposed to be my first car. They got it when I was like 10, now 30. Neat car, but it would have been much cheaper to just buy another one.
That sounds like a cool swap. I imagine that a carbureted 12A with a distributor would be infinitely easier than modern fuel injected swaps, but still no small feat. 👍
I agree, if you have to ask a bunch of questions you are not ready to do a tier 3 or tier 4 engine swap. I swapped a Ford 4.6 engine and transmission from a 1995 Thunderbird into a 1984 F150. I had no knowledge of anybody doing this exact swap. I would consider this smack dab between tier 3 and tier 4 . There was no kit, however it just wanted to go in there. I did fab my own motor mount brackets, but used actual motor mounts from a 1997 F150 (first year the F150 got a 4.6 from the factory) The transmission bolted to the factory crossmember in the stock location, driveshaft from the Tbird was the perfect length all I had to do was swap the pinion flange. Both the Tbird and the F150 had a 8.8 inch rear end so no problem there. The 84 was originally a carb , so a new fuel tank and pump from a 1995 F150 bolted right into place. Used the fuel lines from the Tbird with very little modification. The most time consuming part was the wiring. I printed wiring diagrams from both vehicles and taped them together on a wall. Cut a bunch of unnecessary stuff from the Tbird harness and spent a few hours a day for about a week modifying the harness to work. Swapped the factory 2.47 gears (not a typo, that was the stock ratio) to a set of 3.55 gears, rebuilt a craigslist traclok unit to get both rear wheels spinning. Truck would get 20 mpg or better if I was light on the throttle, but would get up and go. 1984 was one of the lightest F150's built. It was a regular cab short bed 2wd truck, with me in it and a full tank it weighed 3500 lbs! This was no race truck, but it was still fun to drive. I have a few videos of this truck posted on my channel, before the swap and I made a slide show video of the actual swap. I never did make a video of the truck running after the swap, and now that truck is gone. Wish I would have made a video.
@@eoinduffin7815 and another one! love my v70xc to pieces and can't wait till i've saved all my pennies to lift it. an AWD lifted c30 would slap. my first volvo was an s40.
I've done an engine swap on a Focus that I still own. I have a 2002 Ford Focus SE and found a wrecked SVT that was in Florida. We salvaged the entire wiring harness from the wrecked one included the bigger brakes on an SVT. I had to swap out the wiring harnesses and had to spice in some wiring from my old harness because the donor harness had been damaged in one of the front corners. I was honestly surprised as how well everything bolted up into place. Most of my money was spent on new CV axles, brake lines, new SVT wheels to fit the new brakes, and various other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. I had a lot of help from my dad and grandpa who are master mechanics in their own right. I did it mostly for the learning experience and bragging rights.
I definitely agree that engine rebuilds can far exceed the price of a tier 1 swap. I got over 4k in a gen1 sbc and that's not even with top tier components (but definitely some upgrades). Rebuilds can be very satisfying though but be prepared for a lot of time and money. (I could've made cheaper power with a tier 2 swap 😭)
From the power for price standpoint, the LS platform is hard to beat.. swaps are a dime a dozen from a local pick n pull, and CHEAP😁 and many companies make any and every part such as swap mounts for your project car😉
Swapped a EFI 5.0 HO / AOD into a F-150 that came with a carb'd 302 / C6. Mount points lined up on the block and trans, but I had to modify the accessory mounts, make my own wiring harness, and run custom fuel lines. Also did a custom fuse block in the cab and had to re-route how the starter worked. Maybe it was a tier 3. Hardest part was the wiring to retain the EFI in a carb truck without a kit or purchased parts. Took 8 Saturdays to do the entire swap.
I AM an electrical engineer and I can tell you right now that I cannot do that lol. Electrical engineering as a profession is very broad though, but I understand what you mean and I'm sure with some study I could figure it out. But right now, it's over my head lol.
Did what you'd call a "Stage 3" swap (4A-GZE converted to turbo, into a... Toyota Yaris), it's awesome but yeah, the issues never stop coming, engine management and communication with the rest of the car's electronics (for modern cars anyway) are also a huge pain. Now looking to spice up my other Yaris (I'm an addict, don't judge please), but in a much more straightforward and affordable way, a K24A actually looks like a good candidate :D
Don't know why I'm saying this cause I wanna keep it a secret but if you want a good cheap 4 banger get one out of an old pt cruiser gt, or a d series Honda engine.
Nothing against the rest of the crew but Jobe is my favorite. I have helped a buddy do a swap with same engine ( used in multiple vehicles) and everything went smoothly until we learned that whatever it came out of had a slightly deeper oil pan and it was so minimal that everything lined up and could have been bolted but the pan was sitting on the cross member and obviously that was a problem since when running who knows what would happen. We pulled it and luckily the pan and pickup from old motor was in good shape and worked on new motor. Definitely a minimal issue considering everything that could happen and a valuable lesson for future when using a motor used in multiple vehicles even when you give all information to engine shop and I’m not sure they would have known because it could have been a mid run change.
If you're teasing hi low engine swaps, the hi car with a 2jz and low car with a "LS" family truck engine would be pretty cool and suiting to their overall themes.
@@lego4virgo well he said he was leaning towards rebuilding the RB26. I seem to remember the VQ engines in the Z cars didn't like the turbo systems that they got and I don't know if I'd call a VQ and upgrade over an RB but that's just my opinion.
Kinda funny how popular 2jz swaps are but in the racing world all 90s Toyota anything including supras ran 4 banger 503e or 3sgte and then later on swapped 2jz for 1uz. The 2jz could never stack up to the 3s or 1u in racing applications. Straight lines it works good though.
@@joealex65 I don't really know what else would be a good fit for hi car. I'd be fine with seeing a smaller 4.8 that's better for boost or a bigger 6.0 that will put up bigger numbers but the standard 5.3 stuff is okay too.

Hey Zach or anyone else, I’m looking for a first car I have no clue which one of the following to get, I live in a small town with all four seasons very present, my options are a jeep renegade with 4x4 obviously, and oldish truck maybe a Colorado or something like that, or a Volkswagen gti, if I could get some advice that’d be great, I love donut since I was 12 thank you guys. Keep it juiced!
If in all four seasons I would recommend an AWD vehicle or 4x4. I am a Floridian but travel to places where it gets snow. My car is FWD and does sorta ok, but this is with all season tires as well so I also recommend tires for appropriate temps, I went skidding through a 4 way stop while full on the brakes with all seasons and going less than the suggested speed limit. Good insurance too, especially if it covers uninsured motorists. That has saved me multiple times too. These are my personal experiences not hard fact. My biggest suggestion is get something you enjoy driving every day and you will never be unhappy with your car.
I live in Canada where the snow gets bad and the plow drivers don't give a fuck. Buy an old corolla. It may be 2wd but as long as you keep the wheel straight and throw on some good tires itll handle the snow no problem. It being your first car, don't go for 4x4 or awd, more expensive parts, insurance and lower fuel economy
I’ve been enjoying my hummer h3, I live in Ohio so it sees all seasons. Has absolutely no trouble with traction and deep snow. But if you were to get one make sure it’s a 2008-10 and make sure someone who knows what they’re looking for take a look at it before buying. They usually range from about 8-10k
Having done a straight KA24 swap in my S14, I can confirm it's "simple." It took me a few month between work, college and my other car but once I worked out all the wiring kinks, it fired straight up. Also cuz it was a KA, I got the motor/trans combo for under 500

My Corolla will go to my cousin and I will inherit my grandfather's 05 Camry. As it turns out, the 2AZ-FE in it is very turbo capable.

I don't know about a golf but I can tell you from experience I swapped a 1500sp to a later 1600dp in my 65 bug in about an hour 😂
I think the quickest Ive seen was 2 hours - guy over the road did it on his driveway. It was a same-swap old VW beetle

My engine swap in my Z was like a tier 1.5. Went from a non turbo engine to twin turbo so had to deal with the intercooler piping and such which wasn’t too bad because the VG30DETT belongs in a 300ZX. Wasn’t same same but wasn’t a “similar swap” because it’s really like going from an NA Supra and putting in a GTE
Also, Will is so cool and humble. Had the pleasure of seeing his car at a show hosted by Greddy in Irvine.
The production quality on this video was the best I've ever seen! Keep it up guys!

I'm currently doing a 5.3ls swap into a 1991 4runner, we're also doing long travel front suspension in the front and a 8.8 rear axle, she's gonna be a beast
Based 2nd gen owner
Wow I've found a fellow volvo enthusiast!!!! AWD c30 would rip!

The past few days I've been looking into engine rebuilds, engine swaps, and overall engines. This couldn't come at a more perfect time.

Though technically not an “engine”,an electric swap can be pretty damn difficult. Especially if you’re not already an electrical engineer of sorts
I AM an electrical engineer and I can tell you right now that I cannot do that lol.
Electrical engineering as a profession is very broad though, but I understand what you mean and I'm sure with some study I could figure it out. But right now, it's over my head lol.
I think from hardest to easiest parts are to mount batteries securely, get electronics working and mount motor (there are kits for motors)
Youre on the wrong page, Gtfo with that electric shit

One of the best hosts of any UA-cam shows on the platform!
The swapped Zs!!!!!! I neeed that content in my life like yesterday. Thanks for all the hard work.
Having done a straight KA24 swap in my S14, I can confirm it's "simple." It took me a few month between work, college and my other car but once I worked out all the wiring kinks, it fired straight up. Also cuz it was a KA, I got the motor/trans combo for under 500
Good to see he actually finished his engine swapped RB25
This was a solid explanation of how involved certain swaps are.
That tease at the end. YES we want to see those swaps. One straight forward (low car) and one insane (high car).
My dad started a Tier 4 build 15yrs ago. We're only just finishing it now. Custom springs, custom 4 link, custom brake lines etc etc. The only thing standard is the cluster
I'm working on a Hayabusa swap in my 1962 Austin Healey sprite, and it it is WAY more work than I anticipated.
I'm committed, though. Hope to have it done by the end of the summer.
This was my favorite parts of money pit in a series, favorite series beside high and low, need me some more high and low those Zs were so much fun to watch
That rx7 was insane. Absolutely love it. What a beauty
Just did a pop and swap on my 2012 mazdaspeed3 over the weekend. Swapped in a SP63 stage 1 built long block, added all my bolt on parts the following weekend and now I'm just waiting on a new tune, a battery, some oil and some fresh gas and she should be ready for the first start 😀 all in all I got $10k-$15k into this car if not more but would have paid a shop $2k+ to do the swap for me
love how this was next in my feed after a Westen Champlin "Smokestang" vid. now there's a Lv 4 swap.
I came to sing Zach's praises and was happy to see a lot of people beat me to the punch. cool fkn dude talkin about cool fkn stuff
Jz fd is definitely tier 3 according to your guys scale. There are kits to make it plug and play. No chassis modding required. The thing just drops in. There is a degree of effort getting everything to fit but you covered all that in the video.
an HR swap on the high low cars, but for the high car, it gets a crate motor HR, and the low car gets a junkyard HR.
10 seconds in and I see a “swap” for a 1UZ-FE in the 3D animated. As a Lexus owner this brought a smile to my face!
@ConceptIIIPerformance ayyyyyy collab of the century
I'm supa late.
Dad-dude is doing a 350 in a 1949 panel. Not done yet and have been getting in his way since the project began five years ago.
Funny thing the in-line six came out the same day we got it!
I did my first tier one engine swap at 15 years old with a come along winch through the rafters and a 180 piece tool set.
Saving up for a k24a2 to drop it into my 2005 rsx type s.. so a stage 2 swap, same 200hp output with way more torque! Never swapped an engine before but there’s a first for everything I’m super excited
So happy to see hilow got ls swapped. It just felt right
I like the subtle hints of the potential new Hi/Low series
My first swap was a 6 liter LS into my 86 RX7 took me about two years to save up money and slowly piece it together, finally got it running, driving, and drifting. it's so damn fast!
Damn, that d be fun car to drive!
Good job man
How about a high car low car engine swap? Tier 1 vs tier 3. Difficulty, cost, outcome and even more take them to the track when they’re done and compare track times. Love the channel fellas
Glad to see the sc300 get recognition
Sick seeing William Chang on here, ardent follower of him and @concept3 performance. Just so happened to be watching this again years later and spotted his RX7. A Collab deffo is needed here
Tier 4 is defiantly it! Working on a rotary swapped protégé 5!
