I was a REME fitter TA back in around 1985, and my detachment had Explorers, Martians and a couple of EKAs. When the guys went for their yearly camp to Bordon they got shown round the REME museum by a REME officer. When they got to the Explorer he said and this went out of service in the 70s etc. the guys pointed out we still had them, and he nearly passed out. Lovely truck you have there, and much better Gardner engine.
Just saw your video and Oh my, it looks like your vehicle has a Gardner engine. My 50' trawler (Grand Banks Alaskan) has a 6LW Gardner (twins) and I love them. Zero maintenance beyond normal wear and tear for over 15 years. Thanks so much for posting your video and letting me see another one of these wonderful diesel engines.
@@zeusapollo8688 No, the boat was built near Hong Kong and was delivered to the original owner in eastern Canada with Ford Lehman engines. We believe he was the owner of a Gardner dealership there and installed the engines as demonstrators. We can't think of any other reason. And it would have been expensive since the engines would have had to been completely dismantled to get them into the engine room.
Met a man who restored a scammel explorer 6x6 tank recovery and it had the rolls royce petrol 10-5 litre petrol engine in it,, water cooling axle,, what a great bit of equipment it was,, it was here in northern Ireland with the Reme and he bought it many years ago,,he had an old diamond t and a few other trucks , awesome video,, few more mpg from the diesel conversion 😊😊😊☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️From Northern Ireland great video,
I had the privilege of driving one of these, or something very similar, thirty years ago. I certainly wouldn't have swapped it for the DAF 95 that was my 'daily driver' and I was glad it was only a ten mile hop from one depot to another but it was fun. You certainly feel invincible.
When I did my mechanics apprenticeship 1970 to 75 with a Ford main Dealer we had a Thames Trader as our mid weight recovery truck and a Scammell Explorer as our heavy recover truck
I love Scammell trucks, and this is a beauty. I joined the Scammell Spotters Club back in the mid 60s, and I still have the booklet and the badge (I'm 67 now)! How sad is that?
I served my apprenticeship at Cossington Commercials in Leicestershire they had a very similar Scammel with a 5LW possibly 6 I remember the brass plate in front of the gear lever Exceeding 35mph will result in serious transmission damage. I’m pretty sure the chains between the two axles were exposed. In dreary Cossington blue but yours is a beautiful machine.
What a lovely job fanbloodytastic you must be proud of your work the XG reg was one I recognise as a NorthYorkshire or Durham reg am I right thanks for the vid 👍👨🏻🏭
My compliments on a truly beautiful Explorer, its without a doubt one of the nicest I have ever seen! I restore both German and American Military trucks and I know how much work you have into this one but let me say it certainly shows, it just plain beautiful in every way! Its strange I have never seen a Scammell in the US, I show trucks in all sorts of shows and never a Scammell? I wonder why? In looking in the cab is that big lever by the steering column your gear shift lever? I have always been fascinated by these trucks and yours is amazing! Again my compliments!
No, it's a 'hill holder'! Pull it down & it depresses the foot brake. Thus a short term handbrake on all 3 axles. The true hand brake is a 'Neates' ratchet, which will fly off.
Great comment, thanks ! In my past I had restored a 1966 Kaiser M543A2, US military wrecker. I loved the strength of that unit, was in parades here in AK, etc. Great to read of others that restore such equipment 👍👍

Great to see your lorry! My Grandfather used to use them for tank recovery. Cheers!

I can honestly say that's the nicest looking scammel I've ever seen.

Flat road speed is important, but the time killer always seems to be what you loose on hills. :o)
Dam nice !
Lovely
Dont get that thing stuck!
did you keep the turbo? I had a 6LXCT 230hp in an ERF until it went bang lol good noise while it lasted though

Amazing machine! Thanks for sharing. What kind of torque do you reckon it could be making?
When he lets out the clutch, the world rotates underneath it!🤣🤣
Did any company do a model of this?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
is the 6lxct just a 6lxb with a turbo and differnt sprayers? nice truck by the way
Pistons
Injectors
Turbo
Bigger elements in the injector pump tops
Timing
Some have advance/retard unit locked in advance.
Great winch but no good for the lift and tow over eight tton that Gardner sounds sweet
Would it have a Gardner engine ?
As soon as I saw the engine, I thought; That looks like a Gardner engine. They are hand built and almost bullet proof.
Middlesbrough registration.
I am going at Watford On Sunday😜
it starts so quickly, does it have glow plugs?
Gardner engines dont have glowplugs high compression, direct injection, and excess fuel button on the rack for cold start.
Parabéns
I want pic of Scammell, model 80, PLZ.. THX alot
It Better than V8 SCANIC 👎.
And that piece of garbage of course meets all emission regulations..... should only be static or even better off to a scrapyard
Actually I think it’s euro 6 compliant 😂😂
