First of all...James made fun of Layne in 1994...when Layne let his fans down, his band mates down and himself down by being pissed faced in drugs and missing some big shows. Layne died in 2002. Wierd how Layne died the same time James was in rehab. Second, Death Magnatic, the title, is inspired by Layne's death. 3rd, Metallica and AIC were always very good friends, and AIC ripped on Metallica in the passed also..."friends don't let friends get friends haircuts" 4th fuck you, James nailed it!
+Juventin AFTER REHAB YOUR VOICE CHANGE...IF KURT COBAIN WENT FOR REHAB HIS VOICE WOULD BE GONE.....layne how she died?...sorry but i have stucked to black album...and i dont know ..after a video i saw about jason and metalica which have get a psycotherapist to save metallica from destruction..it is a little fucked you know....and the video is after james rehab from alaska....changes that they cant resolve alone the problem like a union band out and say hey i hear metallica...when? and for what?.....kill em all..
People hating on James singing is so ignorant. Singing Laney songs is hard for everyone and no one will ever do it the way he did it. But it's still a very good cover, James's voice may not be the best ever, but is a really strong one, the tribute was really good considering there is AIC with Metallica's frontman, guitarrist, vocalist and songwriter Mr. James Hetfield, that's epic.
i know A LOT of people like Metallica and james, that's cool.. its def not for me... what I really don't like is how IGNORANT he was about Layne's problems and how he would try to humiliate him on stage and in the press...
james suck. layne's natural range is in between baritone and tenor. fucking james of metallica should be able to hit that like an afternoon tea. alas, without voice correction, these "legends" get exposed as nothing but fraud trust fund babies.
Metallica --- the band that introduced me to Metal (still one of my favourites). Alice in Chains ---the band that introduced me to Grunge (by far my favourite Grunge band). So, imagine how I am feeling now... great performance.
I think I just love this song too much, I've liked every version I've heard so far: with james, with anselmo, opeth's version and obviously the original, what a kick ass song, it works with all these singers!
People around here don't have a clue what vocal range is (but they're still ready to give their opinion). As a matter of fact James' vocal range is wider than Layne's but what is different here is intonation. James is a baritone, Layne was a tenor, simple as that. Good job BTW.
Layne was a Tenor... while James is a Baritone... it's a huge difference... and therefore a little more difficult for James to sing like this. Nevertheless... he nailed the song.
Actually, Layne was a high baritone, he just had more of a range, kinda like Chris Cornell but a little less. And as much a I love James Hetfield, this isn't his territory for singing so much....
I was there for this, live. Such an amazing moment. I was just a few rows off of the stage...surprised the hell out of all of us that he showed up. Trust me, it sounded leagues better live.
Just do not understand why you would bring someone on stage that ripped on Layne for years and years to sing a song that was out of his range? Thanks Jerry.
Wicked Vampire He's already an embarrassment to himself before any of this. I was so disappointed in AIC when they let him up there. It is as bad as them letting Layne's dad say something at their concerts. WTF? REALLY?!?
james has amazing voice, one of best in history, freddy mercury is in same league. but this song was destined for layne, like nothing else matters for james ;)
Quit you're bickering. Both Layne, and James were idiots back in the day. Only what Layne was doing killed him, and Hetfield's addictions nearly cost him his family. Layne died, and James got sober, which is a shame, because they'd probably get along now.
Uh no they wouldn't be getting along now. And Layne was not an idiot you moron. Obviously you know nothing about Layne. He would have took the shirt off his back and gave it to you. James would have took the shirt off your back and shit on it. All these years and James is still an arrogant pampas ass hole. Do some fucking research on them both before you get in here trying to be a cheer leader.
Amber Rain actually they both had some pretty bad or idiotic times due to differing addictions...i think they are both awesome but if there was a contest for who was more idiotic Layne killed himself and james is succesful b4 n after AIC and a family man.........sorry no contest even if your argument would be that load or reload sucked....death magnetic was awesome,,layne is just dead....left everyone behind for one fatal shot.....sad
jeff grencer you must not understand addiction. Yea ok now tell me you are a recovering addict to prove your point. James never had the life Layne had before the rock-n-roll life. He did not want to die but at a point there is nothing anyone could do for him and he knew it. To have tried to get sober at the state he was in would have probably resulted in his death. James did everything for himself.............ALWAYS family man or not. He did not give back as Layne did and he never will. You can argue your point all day long but James is still a POS and always will be as far as "I" am concerned. You like em? Rock the fuck on I could care less but shut up about Layne because you wouldn't have lasted 2 days in his condition and you wouldn't have continued to give back every chance you got. Even at his worst he gave when he could hardly stand.
Amber Rain Okay, from the point of view from someone who is a recovering addict. The whole "only you can help you" shit is total fact. Layne holed up in his apartment and killed himself. Simple as that. James chose to go to rehab and take the steps to fix his life. Quit defending the guy. Was he great? Yes. Would I rather listen to Layne sing than James? Depends on which era of Metallica. (Lane was still the more talented vocalist though). No one helped me but me, and I survived and continue to survive my shit. Layne took the easy way out. Listening to some of you idiots bitch about how James "isn't worthy" to sing AIC songs makes me want to go back to eating 1/2 a pound of lortabs a day. For fucks sake Metallica influenced pretty much every single 90s band out there, to include your beloved AIC.
Kenneth Gottschlich What ever...........really? James did not chose rehab his fucking wife and two others in the family went to court on his ass because of his kids. He was threatened. And, for your information he is still getting strung out from time to time so so much for your hes so this and that. I love the comment about you wanting to go back to eating a pound of Lortab. Spoken like a true dumb ass. If you could face the truth about it you wouldn't need to deaden the pain. Excuse me for saying so but Metallica NEVER one influenced AIC............LOL you better do some more research. I'm done talking to you because you are ignorant and obviously have no taste in music to start with. Later tater have fun with that 1/2 pound of Lortab.
This is terrible! Layne would have turned himself into his grave seeing Hetfield replacing him. He also sung it dramatically. His voice just can't handle this song. I'm angry at Alice In Chains for letting this asshole ruin this song.
Pier-Luc Tremblay not really jerry and Metallica were friends. They became friends because of laynes drug abuse. Layne was doing mad season and class of 99 him and jerry didn't like eachother very much since they were trying to get layne help around that time. Jerry says it in some interview I saw awhile back
I think the the main point which people are missing is that it's just an amazing song. I've seen a few videos with different singers and I think they all work. The fact that so many other musicians want to sing on this song is a testament to it's greatness.
this is the best apology ever. i heard that layne and james were in a fight and this is the best way to pay him respect. it's not about how bad did he sang it. it's about the gesture. this made me cry. i can't stop crying :((((((((((. rip layne
No there's several others who i'd love to see tackle an AiC song like "Would?"... Mike Patton would be the ultimate choice. Probably the only singer who could nail it as well as Layne did... Maynard's done well singing AiC songs too.
I loved Hetfield's voice back before the Black Album. He was at his best on Master and Justice. I always felt like he was snarling at the mic back then. Awesome. James can't quite snarl and growl those lyrics the way he used to.
@Awayze Well yea. James has been playing for a long time. Look at AC/DC's frontman, Brian Johnson, or even Ozzy. They don't sound anything like they used too. Not to mention James did blow his own voice out on a couple occasions. So yea, James does sound different.
He rocked it man. Hetfield did his job well and plus he sang it in his own style which shows that hes a great musician. The whole point of music is not copying some1 else, Is doing a great job at interpreting it in your own manner.
AIC was grunge and metal btw but they are constantly considered grunge for coming out of seattle, though they made man in the box in '90 and smells like teen spirit was made in '91
for the lyrics he wrote, for the music he wrote, for being the leader of metallica (before you say sth about metallica i remind you HALL OF FAME), for being who he is, for having this special characteristic voice, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR BEING ONE BIG PART OF THE SOUL OF WHAT I CALL METAL THNKS JAMES !
I was there for this. Thirteenth row or so...about :08-:14. Hair rose up on my neck when James Hetfield took the stage. Video doesn't do his performance justice. Of course it was all impromptu. AIC was a Saturday day performance for Rock-Am-Ring and Metallica was a Saturday night performance for Rock-Am-Main. They were helicoptering the main performers back and forth.
as for whether or not he did a good job at it. Of course, he did. James has a sick voice. I think that was awesome that they got him to do a special appearance!
James and Phil both did a great deal of respect to this song! Both versions are very solid. Both of these singers can relate to the lyrics that Layne wrote.
I could watch and listen to this all day. I think Hetfield rips this to pieces with strength and passion! So many people here are writing mean things about James. That really sucks. James was obviously giving it his all. He wasn't trying to be Layne.
Observation... Hetfield was in the Alice In Chains Unplugged audience in 1996. Ill go out on a whim and say Hetfield never made fun of Layne and was being sarcastic. Most people dont understand sarcasm.
i remember seeing a vid of metallica making fun of layne at one of there shows. motioning a needle in the arm playing man in the box. its nice to see they have resolved there problems :)
"Into the fun again" -James Hetfield
J Lucero lol haha

thank you so much, it's relieving to see someone who's not filled with hate on here

+Juventin Thank you i totally agree
best composed comment, with knowledge of situation.
Fuck James Hatefilled! Fuck you!
I'm a huge AIC fan and its kinda good.
Hetfield range is not as close to Layne's but its an awesome tribute
R.I.P Layne... I agree no one can rock this song like you did. I still love your music and always will.
WRONG~! he is, and always has been SHIT... and always will be...
DJ MBOI so has shakira... doesn't make it GOOD... as a live singer he SUCKS... always has... couldn't lick layne's or AIC'S BOOTS
i know A LOT of people like Metallica and james, that's cool.. its def not for me... what I really don't like is how IGNORANT he was about Layne's problems and how he would try to humiliate him on stage and in the press...

@@djmboi9030man 16 years ago he was in his early 40s when they sung this, even when u wrote your comment he was only 55 lol
Small people will always act small... Haters gonna hate... Rock on!
I love this song, and Hetfield does a great job with the vocals
Metallica --- the band that introduced me to Metal (still one of my favourites).
Alice in Chains ---the band that introduced me to Grunge (by far my favourite Grunge band).
So, imagine how I am feeling now... great performance.
This video made me discover alice in chains about 2 years ago and totally changed my life. They are now one of my favorite bands...thank you
Don't think James' voice is right for the song, but nonetheless still badass to see him and AIC performing together.
i agree it‘s a cute combo but not quite a fitting one
It's a remider of how good Layne was, but that happens every time someone covers AIC.
I think I just love this song too much, I've liked every version I've heard so far: with james, with anselmo, opeth's version and obviously the original, what a kick ass song, it works with all these singers!
Layne's Vocals were the best there has ever been on earth
Workin' butter ! hatfield. Thanks for posting. I love it ,then and now !

James Hetfield should have sang angry chair instead of would. It's probably closer to his range.
Just because he's the table?
That's racist man
@@cholestroll8937 how?
Damn, the ending just gave me chills. IFF, I COULD, WOULD, YOUUUAAAHH!?! Classic Hetfield. I love it.
good job,Jamezzz
james has my full respect man because of his try to sing this song!
really great
You have to remember...this is for a live audience, not clarity for youtubers.
I'm always happy to hear these songs and see Jerry!
And to be fair... James is no longer 20 :) Still.. a nice tribute
Andrew Anthony Layne did not have wide range. I wonder how people are ignorant but still eager to comment. He was an amazing singer though.
Layne had almost 3.5 octaves at his peak during facelift times.
Sorry I seem ignorant to you but the average vocal range is 2 octaves, usually under that.
"YouuuuWah"
i think jerry cantrell does a good job hes the closest one to layne in my opinion
I was there for this, live. Such an amazing moment. I was just a few rows off of the stage...surprised the hell out of all of us that he showed up. Trust me, it sounded leagues better live.
Huge fan of both bands! Nicely done!
love James but Layne is LAYNE :v

Dumb comments there friends.
LOL, that sucked balls, james cannot even stay close in the place layne was.

same league? if mercury is MLB then hetfield is little league teeball. you’re out of your everloving mind

is sound perfect with James, as always when he sings.

Btw great preformance
Hetfield is a wise old wolf ... knows his limitations, knows how to handle a situation like this. I LOVE HETFIELD LOVE CANTRELL AND LOVE LAYNE.
When I'm feeling down, and I need a good laugh, I can come back here and listen to James fuck this song up.

Really cool of James to do this.
stop fighting.. can you just notice how beautiful is to hear this explosive combination!!!?? 90s rules!

Yeah I thought it was Duvall, wasn't sure though.
James is by far the best metal vocalist, there is no one like him.

i remember that!!!
Is the severe edge the long, sharp knife that he stuck into this song as he proceeded to murder it?
@Ruben75017
I agree... wow, I was optimistic til he opened his mouth.
A bit shaky at the start, but James gradually started to get a better feel for the song as it went on.
good performance by jamez
alittle bit of of yeah and ooooaaahhhh, just the way it should be :)
James sings the song very well, great tribute to Alice in Chains,Layne would be proud
Im not sure what you guys are talking about - James did respect this song - great job!
