The front facing stereo speakers were brilliant. I don't think anyone else did that at the time and few do today. Forward firing speakers sound so much better than back or bottom firing (Switch Lite, PSP1K). I've got the fancy official leather envelope case on mine and it's not disintegrating yet. Everything BlackBerry made felt premium.
I remember seeing this for the first time in a store as a teen. The gesture control was mind-blowing to me. Also loved the form factor, and the stereo speakers. It had amazing features such as extended display mode for the HDMI and true multitasking. (eg: starting a video recording and changing to an other app didn't stop the recording)
Yeah I got this back in 2011 and I remember this thing wash 10 years ahead of its time and the gestures were later taken by iPhones late 2017 iPhone X !!!!
I had one for a bit before I resold it - the interface was pretty fluid for its time, it was compact and the web browser was one of the few that still supported Macromedia Flash at that time. The PIN field in the Contacts is for the BlackBerry Messenger PIN (user ID) numbers.
I got one for Christmas once and loved it. Blackberry has a great idea with the UX here, ahead of it’s time with gestures but no app support or it would be huge!
The PlayBook was a classic example of something great that should have appeared on the market while BB was dominant. Considering it came out in 2011, the fact it has an HD screen, rear and forward facing cameras 1080p, a dual core processor, hdmi (1080p output), dock, predictive keyboard, dual speakers a great connectivity platform with your BB and other AV equipment is impressive. Added wins also include drag and drop files in a wide range of accepted formats and all in 2011, it’s hats off, but the rot for BlackBerry was already irreversible.
After so long rubber de-vulcanizes which isn't something most tech users experience. The old school ThinkPads which have Mobile CPUs are either devulcanizing or will be very soon. My T420s is currently doing that.
i'm a crackberry (i'm still using a KeyOne and a Q10 today) and i remember there was a very short period of time when, for some reason, only the wealthiest (and hippest) people i know owned a playbook it was 2011, so it was the tail-end of blackberry's prestige years, and owning a 9700 (which i've had) or a 9900 still meant more than having an iphone i think a big part of this mystique was the fact that the playbook is less of a stand-alone tablet, and more like a big extra screen for your blackberry; you NEEDED to pair it with your blackberry to be able to access your email and calendar. which means people who bought this either didn't know what they were getting, or they were blackberry loyalists who already have disposable cash. another thing that this did which was revolutionary at the time was that this runs on a primitive version of the BB10 os (this was the first ever blackberry device running QNX), and it was one of the few tablet devices (or any mobile devices for that matter) that runs a FULL desktop internet. that was a huge deal at the time.
QNX based gestures, stereo speakers, great mics, ability to sideload. The Playbook was my companion through college and was a trusty piece of kit back then.
I loved my Playbook. Got it clearance priced. Set it up to run Android apps. Even developed a few apps for it myself, and sold them on the store. Used it for years after it had effectively ended any practical use case scenarios as a portable Sega Genesis (thanks to an emulator and Bluetooth controller) and e-reader (thanks to the Aldiko app). It was my best little travel companion, and got used to pass much time on flights when I traveled semi-regularly for work. EDIT: I just remembered, I also used it with VNC to connect to my computer at home. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo, and a TV with an HDMI port, and bam, I was in business.
One of the worst issues (for me, at least) was that you could not let the battery go completely dead because it needed a bit charge to recharge. I let the battery completely die before knowing about this and had to send in to Blackberry to get "fixed". I have no idea why a table (or any electronic device) could be sold with a major flaw like this.
Actually - I did know. It was obvious at the time it would be dead in the water as RIM were avoiding Android at the time - which was a huge mistake and a major reason for their eventual demise.
LOL the PIN number field was nothing to do with credit cards... each device had its own individual personal identification number. BlackBerry devices supported direct PIN-to-PIN messaging. If you knew the PIN of your recipient's BlackBerry, you could compose an email message using the PIN instead of the email address. Kind of like a friend code.
Giving you the layer of privacy with not having to share your phone number or email to communicate. People just shared their BB PINS and were able to communicate and share pics ans so on.
I had it when it came out. It had really good frontal speakers, two of them. At the time, I didn't care about the bezels. We weren't as picky. I actually miss it. The battery was pretty good as well. I used to play Asphalt on it and it looked and sounded amazing. It almost vibrated due to the loudness. Fkn loved the thing.
Blackberry was ahead of its time with its software and functionality. Blackberry 10 brought in gesture-based OS. Apple and Android were still utilizing buttons to do everything. Now they utilize gestures in their operating systems and everybody acts like they started it. I remember people back in the day when using blackberry 10 complained of having to use gestures in order to navigate the operating system. And now it is commonplace and people couldn't fathom going back to buttons. Also, the pinned in the contacts was for your blackberry pin. Which was used for blackberry Messenger.
I find it hard to believe that such a big Blackberry fan didn't know about the Playbook. Still got mine that was paired with BB Torch. Like BB10 it was well ahead of it's time. I loved mine back in the day. Should charge it and have a play with it again.
luckily, i put some apps on mine when their store completely shut down a few years ago. it can stll be useful for the cam, audio and gaming. i wll never get rid of mine.
I still have this. Wifi is too slow, front camera not working, screen cracked, blackberry world stopped working, rubber texture is totally gone due to rough use. But it still turns on😂. Is there any way I can restore my playbook?
I have a BlackBerry Playbook, but because it was reset, I cannot sign into it, so I cannot use it. It looks almost identical to the Kindle Fire HD from 2012. The iPad also has gesture controls on iOS 5.
Yes omgosh I had the htc one m7 it was the phone of the year in 2013 and I loved their photos application layout too and the boom front facing speakers
Black Berry went out of business because of 2 CEO's. had nothing to do with their product but had everything to do with the fact that they didn't think that they needed an App Store.
I would love it if we could get some of that old tech working in the current day. It'd be easier to hold due to the bigger bezels and have all the ports that we need to connect it to anything, plus the front facing speakers. I'm betting that case wasn't official since it was disintegrating pleather, an all too common thing these days.
I used to have it. A nice tablet for a time, but with the BlackBerry OS it had no chances to survive the competition with REAL tablets of that era. Even then it was considered.... not so good. When was that? I guess 2012, time flies..
Writing this on my friend’s iPad 6 (he went on a trip and let me borrow it) and it’s thin af, Apple nailed the aesthetics here and even on the first eye UHM iPad Mini
I bought a blackberry tablet. I could never use it. I always have a problem with the internet and connecting to the network and sites, and worse, not having any correct program... But my daughter bought an iPad at the same time as me and she always made fun of me.
Honestly why wasn't the blackberry movie released in any cinemas or streaming services here?? Like why was it only released in the us and the company's home country of Canada??
Would’ve been nice if blackberry had gotten their crap together and became a big player again in the market because I liked the playbook. It sucks being stuck with google, Apple and Samsung.
I used to loveee using my blackberry curve 8900 and I miss having a physical keyboard blackberry used to be on top of the world I don't know what happened to them for them to crash and burn this hard
It had good audio and for the time a pretty good screen. Trouble was it was slow and blackberry dropped support for it when it failed to sell. In my opinion, it was this that caused consumers to lose faith in BlackBerry. Real shame.

"Check out the bezels on that one"😂😂
The cameras are shockingly good

😂😂 should have kept his youth in a NordLocker. 😂😂
Love how the massive bezels here put a modern smartphone-sized screen in an iPad Mini-sized shell
After so long rubber de-vulcanizes which isn't something most tech users experience. The old school ThinkPads which have Mobile CPUs are either devulcanizing or will be very soon. My T420s is currently doing that.
De-vulcanised… pretty much summed up Leonard Nimoy’s passing 😞
The Blackberry tablet was fantastic for its day.

So do you think with the arrival of ivy and given how old qnx actually is, do you think bb could phase out qnx in the next couple of years??
@@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 i guess so yes, because the new softwares are much more optimised for cars.
QNX based gestures, stereo speakers, great mics, ability to sideload. The Playbook was my companion through college and was a trusty piece of kit back then.

You didn't knew I didn't knew thats why they are out of business .....my man that was deep
It was ahead of its time
Samtime is really by far the best reviewer of obsolete tech!
I love sarcasm and he does it very well. He's the only tech UA-camr I know who wears a suit in his videos.
I agree! This video, including the other one on the BlackBerry Torch, is rather funny too 😂
It's like a recovering addict bumping into his old dealer.

Oh yeah, that dreaded "feature" that kinda forced people to get their "rapid" wall charger.
Actually - I did know. It was obvious at the time it would be dead in the water as RIM were avoiding Android at the time - which was a huge mistake and a major reason for their eventual demise.
I had one back in the day and loved it. Sad that BB didn't stick with their Android/BB10 devices.

Tablet without home button it was perhaps the only one at this time.
I still have mine... in the original case. Internet browser no longer works, but it's perfect for presentations...
Saw this tablet at a pawnshop over ten years ago but it looked too unusable for me.
These had phenomenal build quality. I still have mine. They had Adobe Flash support back in the day.
The display is surprisingly decent

Reminds me of the Amazon fire i use to play my old music...clunky bezels and all.

Haha, I had one. Shame what happened to BB. I miss them. And Nextel.
Had one and they worked fine.
luckily, i put some apps on mine when their store completely shut down a few years ago. it can stll be useful for the cam, audio and gaming. i wll never get rid of mine.
The tech reviews we didn't know we needed. 😂😂 By the influencer we need in this world😊
the calculator bit got me......
I had one of these back then and LOVED it. It was amazing.
This should be in the museum
Why is that camera so good.
I still have this. Wifi is too slow, front camera not working, screen cracked, blackberry world stopped working, rubber texture is totally gone due to rough use. But it still turns on😂. Is there any way I can restore my playbook?
My friend has one LMAO, it bricked itself trying to connect to a wpa3 wifi XD, its unbricked but that was fun
I have a BlackBerry Playbook, but because it was reset, I cannot sign into it, so I cannot use it. It looks almost identical to the Kindle Fire HD from 2012. The iPad also has gesture controls on iOS 5.
I miss Blackberry HTC and LG

Android 13 lets you run virtual machines for ARM operating systems. Which means that, in theory, you could run this on a Pixel Fold.
“Try again earlier”. Lol
Black Berry went out of business because of 2 CEO's. had nothing to do with their product but had everything to do with the fact that they didn't think that they needed an App Store.
hotdamn the camera and video quality was better than i expected!
i was using a 9700 when this was released!

Damn that was a long time ago. Good old times when i owned blackberry bold 9700 and 9900

Wonder what is Sam’s connection to Romania, he oftenly uses it in his videos

Honestly why wasn't the blackberry movie released in any cinemas or streaming services here?? Like why was it only released in the us and the company's home country of Canada??
Hey people like us for the keyboards in our phones, let's release a tablet!
I had this for a while before and I was able to install android apps on it. It was awesome, however, I hated the humongous bezels on it.
Please review the blackberry movie, Sam
