    I`m not surprised over Defender because it`s one of the best off road capable vehicle. But unfortunately I would never pick this car for a daily offroad adventure, even if in some situations it`s better than FJ or other similar SUVs. First of all - no frame, which will make a huge difference in a long distance. Of course for 10km of such offroad you won`t see any difference or sirious damage but after hundreds or tousands of km, that definitely won`t be a one piece car... Secondly - electric, I don`t trust it esepecially on difficult terrain. It can failure any time, without any worning, just because it`s what it is. Half a year ago watched a video on youtube where guys took a new Defender for a really serious offroad in Ukrainian mountains, and where driving it up the steep hill, but suddently the electronic switched off, which means you couldn`t even use the breaks and stop the vihicle, while it was falling down from the mid of the hill. Fortunately nothing bad happened but it could ended in much more worse way. Relaying on electronic just because it`s capable of doing something is too "stupid". When you drive a serious off road the main factor is not you capability but RELIABILITY. For me RR Defender is a cool electric toy, which you can take for some fun out of town showing off its offroad capabilities but not a car which I rely for a long distance journey where are no car repair services. With all my love to RR, it`s just a very unreliable expensive toy. I don`t look at it as a car, and all today`s electric cars are not made for people, because of "ecological" or other stupid reasons but because a group of managers from marketing in the end has better profits... Less reliable means sooner you will invest in repair or another one. When I buy a car I want to have a car, which I control in 100% but not a computer with 4 wheels and a seat for me, where are dozens of useless touch screens, where to change a simple thing you need to go to a menu, than sub-menu, next other sub-menu, while you could press just a simple buttome. And some one who saying it`s more convinient is just a lier for me. The same with electronic seats, cargo-door etc.... So many useless things, which increase the cost of the car and make it more breakable. Sorry fo such a long comment :D

      You are completely right, the defender is a cool electronic toy, not a real durable and reliable car.
      I have a fj cruiser and this thing never fails.

    • @mjl8115
      @mjl8115 2 роки тому +4

      I couldn't agree more. Personally I hate electric seats, tailgates and glossy screens. For me a 4x4 SUV is about off-road fun and utility. I cannot feel anything positive in a toy that is not trusty and very expensive to service and maintenance (proved by "LR Time" YT channel). Of course new Defender has brilliant 4x4 electronics, but it is for showing off only. Using it all the time you can overheat brakes and eat discs 'n' pads in hours - like in every car or SUV that has electronically controlled 4x4 system. This is why REAL mechanical locks are stil in use in off-road vehicles. Yes, LR freaks, FJ Cruiser has electronically controlled front diff called A-TRACS, but front lock is rarely used in off-road situations and rear one is mechanical. This is completely different idea than in Defender where all 4 wheels are "locked" by brakes all the time in off-road modes.

      @@mjl8115 I can't imagine how good it would be to have a trip to the country side on a typical offroad suv with the people whose company I enjoy.

    • @Steve_MFr
      @Steve_MFr Рік тому +6

      No, I have to disagree. The Defender has a lockable center and rear diff (optional) - which can both be set up in the preferences with quick links as personal preferences. Just because you can do more does not make it worse.
      And as far as reliability goes, things have changed dramatically at Land Rover in the last 15 years. We manufacture diagnostic equipment for Land Rovers and have a very good idea of reliability statistics. Land Rover's reputation is much worse than it deserves.
      And you CAN control and repair a modern car the same as you did with your 80 series Land Cruiser or whatever. You just need the appropriate tools. And torx bolts aside, that is basically one electronic tool to help you diagnose problems, one more tool than people carried in the 1950s. And this tool will even tell you what the problem is. In the 1950s, you had to understand how a car works before being able to do anything with it if it wasn't working perfectly.

    Should have compared the FJ with lockers and A-Trac. The FJ is a literal beast off road. I got turned around on an extremely rugged ATV trail once inadvertently with my FJ while pulling a small fiberglass travel trailer. That FJ didn’t skip a beat! She didn’t complain a bit! Fortunately the trailer had a high lift suspension.

    I have a 2010 since new and I think the driving style of the guy in the FJ made it look like the FJ was having trouble. Also seems like the FJ tires were a little hard for the rocky terrain. I would have aired down to 18 psi for that, with all 4x4 you must keep your momentum when climbing lose rocky terrain, if you are constantly stopping and stabbing the throttle you are going to get wheel spin and struggle. Find the right gear and rpm and keep it moving.

    There is absolutely no chance i would choose the Defender over a FJ. Here in the outback where i live you would be lucky to see 1 land rover of any type per 500 other 4x4s and those 4x4s are 80% Toyota's. This tells us all something that Toyota's are the 4x4 king of 4x4s for many reasons most of all reliability.
    This is the reason we don't see any other make but Toyota bieng used by our large mines in Australia. There is no way your going to see a Defender on a mine. You will only see Toyota's. Because they allways work. Their reliability is a legend.

    Technologically, Defender is much progressive than FJ and therefore it has gained the leading position. However, in terms of the reliability which is the vital component for selection of 4x4 trucks. I'd say that FJ is incompatible. Well, all depends on use of the car. I think this cars are in different categories. Defender has moved in to more of a SUV type car unlike of FJ, which I think shall be considered as rough Off roader. So, both of them are OK, but I would choose FJ for off real off roading and Defender for traveling with Family at slightly rough terrains. I am follower of the old school generation and I prefer less electronics and moving parts in the car. Since, I think as many moving parts you have as much chance to brake something as well as maintenance cost will kick up.

    Lets be honest, your comparing an elderly disabled electric scooter vs an APC.
    One vehicle is designed for people who have difficulty buttoning their pants and wiping theirselves.... landrover. And the other is for people who are capable of learning and utilising a much more capable reliable machine... FJ. The Fj is for people who have a brain and know when and where diferent assistive aids are required if ever.
    Now if this guy driving the FJ utilised a good line, 4low and Atrac Automatic traction control or crawl control it would have managed the rolling rocks even better.
    Also if you go back along the landrover line youl see how many mechanical issues they have, the last gen FJ has none of those, not to mention that a service for an fj oil and filters can be done anywhere for under $100 simple 10w30 oil and air filter. The defender needs special oil, otherwise you risk destroying the expensive DPF filters. Ie several thousands of dollars to replace and the vehicle will not run if it has a fault.
    The fj isnt the same as that, so even if you soemhow think the defender did a better job, when one of those computer systems craps its self you are going to 100% require a tow to a mechanic. no ofs or buts about it. You need an electronic workshop for that vehicle. Ive never heard of a last gen 2010 on FJ letting anyone down thats been even backyard maintained. And that there in is another plus for the fj, you can diy. cant say the same with that defender.

Let's see how the LR holds up after 5 years of this kind of use. My 2010 FJ has 157,000 miles and at least 1/3rd of those miles are off-road. When going to remote off-road locations, being able to get back to pavement reliably is usually the most important part.

I drive a L322 Range Rover that kicks the current Defender off road and I dont trust it , because , like All land rover products , they are very unreliable , especially on their electronics . I would hate to be given an out of warrentee out of maintainance plan defender , it would be cheaper to put a match to it than fix it , Land Rovers are a money pit !

    The fj cruiser is only light duty 4x4 like a hilux or prado wich its based off or most duel cab utes it is not classed as a full size heavy 4x4 like its big brother the proper land cruiser be it a 40, 45,55 ,60, 70, 75, 80, 100, 200 or now the 300. the defender is meant to be in the full size 4x4 heavy class is it not ?. As previously it has always been compared to the true 4x4 heavys like the land cruiser and nissan patrol not the soft off roaders. dont get me wrong i love the fj as well as an fj40 owner i like the retro style but it is lacking unless modified as most modern 4x4s are.

    Defender has the worst articulation. Idk what Land Rover was thinking not making it body on frame and making it independent suspension front and rear. That’s not an off road vehicle. It’s not horrible off road but they def put off roading on the back burner and focused more on luxury and on road comfort which is a shame since the defender should come with off road chops with its past tradition defender name. But either way I’d never buy one lol. Way too expensive and horrible reliability ratings. I’d take a 4runner, fj cruiser, or land cruiser anyday over anything else.
