We drive FJs and wranglers here in the UAE, and this is 100% accurate. If you don't have a warranty on the Jeep you better have a lot of money available for repairs
I love how people complain about Toyota engines being "old school". These Toyota engines are proven to work, unlike the engine in the new TFL Ford F-250 Overlander and Land Rover. Both with "new engine designs" and both engines failed with less than 20k miles on them.
@@truthbetold89 Don't buy an FJ expecting great fuel mileage. I've only got 33's for tires and I can get about 280 miles per tank. I also need to do some upkeep like clean my MAF and swap plugs, so I might not be a great example. It's worth it though for the ride and capability you get.
I have 190k on my 07. Had to replace my torque converter and went ahead and changed some seals, filter, all fluids, and rear diff seal while at it. It drives like brand new again.
I have had both, there is no question the FJ is far far better built and long lasting. i had my FJ for years. I kinda regret selling it now but the stick shift was really getting old for me.
Got one of the first FJs in Australia to arrive back in 2011, still going strong with over 200,000km. It's crossed deserts, gone to the beach and is cool in the snow. It's definitely a keeper. Even have a camper trailer to match the hornet yellow :)

Still driving my 2007 FJ Cruiser. It has been my daily driver until I retired and since then, I have used it as a cross country off roader. Nearly 250,000 miles and it is still totally reliable on the highway and off-roading. The windshield is a rock magnet and I am on number four, that has been my only major complaint. It has taken me to 33 National Parks and I have been able to be gone for weeks at a time. The FJ is a four season beast; that will go any where, anytime. I only wish that Toyota still manufactured the FJ Cruiser, I'd buy a new one tomorrow and still keep my 2007.
I have always liked the Jeep in the past, but I'm gonna go with the FJ on this one. I can't explain it. But damn it's cool, simple, capable and has that great Toyota reliability.

@@barrydraper absolutely, and I would take a Viper over a Vette without question. We have similar mods, but his Jeep is just a bit more capable since I haven't done a solid axle swap. I've had a few people take pictures of the FJ at stop lights, and that gives a pride of ownership like nothing else.
Jeep is no longer Jeep. older ones are bulletproof, some ancient Grand Cherokees with 300k+ miles on them. Wouldn't trust newer post-FCA-takeover models.
The FJ’s Engine from 2007 to 2009 (maybe 2010 also) had a single VVT engine making 239/278 hp/torque verses the newest one since 2010 with dual VVT making 260 or 270 hp and 270 torque. The oil filter of the first version was on top and the one on the latest one is a cartridge type below the engine. The dimples in the covers are to hold nuts and bolts when you work on the car.
I just got my Jeep worked on and heard a large clunk. I pulled over and looked at it everything seemed fine. I think my mechanic must have left a tool that's somewhere on the interstate. 😂🤣😂
The 4.0 v6 has been around since like 02, so about 18 years. Still very stout. Also there are a couple of these motors with over 500k, for sure I know one lives in a 4runner. The motor did get a small change around 2010, with a small bump in power and a different tune for efficiency. One of the reasons it feels slower in the 5th gen 4runners (that added with ~500lbs makes it slower to 60 than 4th gen 4runners)
@@snarkylive get one from 09 and newer. The earlier 1GR had head gasket issues. Look up 1GR P300 codes. The ones made around 08 had the gasket redesigned.
I've had my FJ for a little over a year now, and it never ceases to make me smile. Surprising offroad capability and insane mechanical durability makes it such an easy choice for me over other offroad SUVs. Just put a lift on it and now I have the ride quality of a Lexus!
Having owned a Jeep for a few years, there is no way the Wrangler would have won. Warranty and customer support alone would make me go Toyota. FCA customer support is a total waste of time.
@@Tsalinger Several mfrs have similar. It's not just FCA. Everybody is trying to meet emissions as global population and driving population grows. I'm wondering if engine longevity from most mfrs is going to suffer as they tune leaner and leaner. Use an additive like Duralube if you're concerned about increased engine wear from oiling issues with start-stop. Startup is allegedly when most wear occurs. Oils are even available now with similar properties to Duralube...built in.

When you are assessing vehicle value, remember that you are paying for the mileage the vehicle has left in it, not the mileage it has already travelled. FJ is easily the more economical vehicle (and way cooler!).
That's one way of seeing it. In reality the longevity of a vehicle depends more on corrosion and general deterioration (esp. UV damage to paintwork and rubber parts) than on wear to the moving parts. Plus, as any economist will tell you, all value is subjective.
I love jeeps, but you can't deny the fj's value jeep loyalist get mad but for someone to compare a 2007 car over a new car shows the cuality of the fj.

Love my FJ, “ Tank” currently has 328,0000 miles and going strong. He has really been the perfect vehicle. 2007 purchased in 2008 with 55,000 miles for 16,000 dollars.
As a former owner and auto technician at both Chrysler and Toyota I have seen Jeep wranglers on stock wheels/tires come in at 30k miles for warranty work on the front end. The steering rods would have scary amounts of play at their ends. This was a DAILY occurrence! On the other hand my FJC was still nice and tight at 200k.
I've owned three jeeps over my lifetime. All have had issues of some kind except the Kaiser. The two Chrysler models were money pits! Now that fiat owners and produces them I steer clear. Purchased a 2014 toyota fj two years ago after much research. I've got to say it's the toughest best all around 4x4 I've ever owned. Told my wife when I die to bury me in it!
FJ may look old but is more comfortable to drive both on and off road. Quieter cabin too especially on highway speeds. I got an 08 Trail Teams and it has 255000km (158450 miles). I still enjoy driving it everyday.
Excellent review. Personally, being a 2008 4Runner owner (I've had it for 12 years and it still looks and drives like new), I would trust the FJ for the long haul.
I have these things to say about my FJ: I brought it new in 2008; I have put over 280k mikes on it; I changed the alternator, and it still runs and looks great (when it’s clean) and it is reliable! Oh, the best part...it’s a Toyota. A Jeep will come 2nd...and a distance 2nd. Peace

I have an 07 FJ and it has held up very well. Suspension is original and it still feels like a new smooth drive with no squeaks. Mechanically has been excellent, people are always shocked if they ride in it when they find out it is a 2007. Still feels like a new vehicle.
I am an FJ Cruiser fan sense 2007. I bought a 2010 with under 90k miles. I stole it from the dealer. I purchased before detailed. I bought the last day of the month, and the end of the quarter March 31, and the lot needed the sale. Having sold automobiles, I knew it was the best time to buy to get the best price. I have less than 100 k miles now. Being in excellent condition, if I sold now with today's market, I'd get 30-40% more than what I paid. Btw, at 63yrs old, it's the best auto I've ever owned.
Over New Years i bought an 07 FJ in Oklahoma for $12,300. Had 176k miles. Has atrac, locking diffs, TRD everything except color matched roof, lights, aggressive all terrains, and bilstien 5100s. Since I've had it, I've put over 14k miles, installed a smitty bumper and winch, and did an Old Man Emu heavy duty strut swap up front (medium duty for the back is on the way). I love it. I can't hack the jeeps front flex, and jeeps are a little better over super rocky and articulated terrain, but on everything else I can keep up with jeeps and on the road its 2x more comfortable
Love my Toyota BOFs. Had a 5th gen new T4r, only lost 1k on it over 3 years. Traded it in on a GX460. So dependable and rugged. Vault like. Love Toyota TEQ.
The FJ cruiser is my dream car. But they all need a roof rack on them to finish the look. I am trying to find one that is in good condition that I can afford.
Before you buy it. Be sure to check the geometry and wind noise. The FJ is notorious that; not all roof racks are created equal. Expecially, how they affect you MPG.
Honestly if price and getting a good value is of concern to you definitely buy a different car. Nothing much wrong with an FJ but for the price you’re going to have to pay you’re definitely not getting a good value, not even close unfortunately
@@kylekdk456 The FJ Pro said he could get the same FJ for 5K-7K less if you fly to Houston. There is a premium $$$ to buy in Colorado. Just saying at 23K for the same vehicle you can use the difference for the Off Road Parts.

Between these two I reckon the FJ is the safer bet, prices on those are bound to start climbing at some point. Toyota made an instant classic with the FJ and solidified it’s status by discontinuing it a few years later. They are only getting rarer while the Jeep is getting more common.
Ive owned a Jeep I bought brand new and honestly can say it was the worst purchase I've ever made. That thing spent months in the shop getting fixed and when the driver's seat electronics kept failing and either pinning the seat against the steering wheel or reclining it all the way back all Jeep could say was that I had to keep getting it towed back to them to have the computer reset. That was their solution... I now own a FJ which I bought second hand and never had an issue. I would never recommend anyone ever buys a jeep.
That Jeep will be in the shop needing repairs within the first 20k miles. That Toyota with minimal maintenance will go 500k on the original drivetrain. I own a used car dealer, I stay far away from Chrysler products. Maybe exception for the older 4.0 manual Jeeps, but nothing automatic from Chrysler. PS. Stay away from most any car with a CVT transmission. (Mainly Nissan 04+) I took a FJ in on trade the other day. 260k miles, front bumper smashed to pieces, driver fender crumpled, 4 different tires, dings, scratches, interior is nasty but I’m keeping it for myself. I’m fixing it up and building it. I’ve always wanted one but wasn’t willing to pay the price. ($2,200 invested so far). Ordering parts this week for 18” wheels with 35” tires, 3” lift, few other mildly tasteful mods. Can’t wait!!
I was not a Yota fan until I bought my FJ. Not gonna act like I can keep up with a Rubicon on hard trails. But hell, the FJ is the next best thing under the Rubicon. And way more comfortable
You can still by 2020 Fjs in the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. Here in Australia we got the 2011 to 2014 model. So short release. Since covid here the prices have gone up about 5 to 10k due to everyone being stuck at inside the borders. You'll pay between 25k and 50k for an FJ here. The outback of Australia is all arid dessert you"ll rarely see a Jeep you will see almost exclusively Toyota's and the Fj is one of the most reliable. Jeeps due to solid front axel are better for weekend 4x4 up harder tracks that require better flex, but if you want a unique vehicle that'll get you into the most remote places on earth and back FJ all the way. Also they forget to mention the 2013 to 2014 fjs come with crawl control and dual tank for 157 litres of fuel. At least here they do. They can be thirsty and if you have kids your probably better of with the prado which shares the same mechanicals. We got one spec with all the fruit. I love mine there's nothing like it really.

Plus I got the color I wanted. Now, and Here is where I Sometimes get into a Bit of Trouble. Jeep people Love Their Jeeps.(you guys are Snobs for sure)But That's OK. I 'Get It'. However, Even with Only Rear-Lockers, the FJ Has Done the Rubicon Trail by the Industry's Best & Well Known Off Road Drivers, and Had Zero Problems.(There is a Booklet with All the Photos and 'Story Telling' that came with my First FJ) SO, As a Result, I Often Proclaim that my FJ Is as Good as Any Jeep Rubicon, but Then, 'Them Words' can End in a Verbal Altercation. So Be It. I live In/On the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and take my 'Stock-Rig' Anywhere Without a Problem One. Plus, the Ride is Superior in Comfort.(I Know, Because I once had a Jeep) Two Months Ago, a Total Stranger FJ Collector, Offered me 10K Above What I paid for mine Seven Years Ago.(I Have Yet to have 28K Miles Racked Up on it)(I'm Sure that had Something to do with it) But, since I live Where I 'Off Road', I Don't have to Travel There, to Get There) All in All, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE My FJ and What it Can Do, and Where it can Take Me. I just bought last winter for $27G a 2014 with 87,000 miles Toyota Certified. It has a 4year Toyota warranty or 140,000 miles bumper to bumper. Had to take out a separate insurance to cover to true value. Blue book is low, true market value is way above now. Last week found same FJ but a 2012 no warranty and 60,000. Miles for $34G
When I bought my 1st truck, I needed it for hauling stuff to do projects around the house. I found a 1st gen 2wd Tacoma and suspension needs some TLC so I bought Bilstein Shocks and upgraded springs and ball joints. I came from a car background so I know I want good shocks for it instead of the cheap stuff at AutoZone. After doing the shocks, I didn't know that I transformed the truck and my mechanic said that I need bigger tires now. I have no idea what he's talking about but I did noticed the truck looks funny with the wheels. It looks off, it doesn't match. So I did went bigger. My friend said to go off roading so I gave it a try, I liked it and now I want more. I started researching for a good 4x4, might be a truck or SUV. I looked at everything from F150 to Xterras. I liked the jeep since I grew up in Philippines, the jeep design is prominent there and I always like the look. I looked at the FJ because of it's heritage, but the rear doors were a turnoff, the windshield and the massive blind spots. I didn't like the 4 door Tacomas because the passenger space feels small and tight. I wanted something that I can depend on, go on an adventure with my wife and a potentially growing family, so I got a 4Runner Off-Road.
I drive a 2012 FJ in Army Green that just rolled 100,000 on the odometer. A few things to point out that I love: 1) The stock stereo is decent, but it’s also super easy to replace. If you want satellite radio and multiple cameras, even in unit OBD2 monitoring, there are plenty of options. 2) The half doors are great for a single person, a couple or someone with a dog. And “in a pinch” they’re way better than a two-door. 3) The wheelbase is the perfect compromise between the 2-door Jeep and the Unlimited. 4) Although it’d be awesome if the doors and roof could come off, temperature inside was never an issue living in Phoenix, AZ or SoCal. And it handled cold winter weather in Flagstaff, AZ and southwest CO well, too. 5) Although the aftermarket for the FJ may not be as large as that for the Jeep, it’s still pretty huge. Lots of parts from Land Cruisers, 4 Runners and Tacomas are interchangeable with the FJ and there were plenty made specifically for it as well. And modding is just as addictive: I’ve added a steel front bumper, custom modified TRD front skid plate, RCI skids front-to-back, heavy duty DOM sliders. Still need to add suspension but the factory one has tackled some gnarly trails in Moab, UT; Ouray, CO and all over AZ (Crown King!). I’ve been drooling over the new Bronco but I also can’t imagine parting with my FJ. The styling is odd but it grows on you. It’s comfortable and it’s capability constantly surprises me. So glad you posted this and your other video right after picking up the FJ. Now I’m craving taking it out on some trails!
Getting the sub to work was easier than the headset and harness install itself (which wasn’t hard), so having to do some basic wiring shouldn’t deter anyone from swapping out the factory stereo.
2008 FJ Cruiser had since new. 46K miles; 3 inch lift, sliders, 33's, backup camera, CDT speakers and Kenwood head unit, AUX bumper lights. Zero dents, scratches or rust (AZ). Immaculate and unless Toyota can come up with something better; I'll never sell. Test drove a Jeep before I bought the Toyota and there was no comparison. There's a reason FJ's hold their value.
Here in the Middle East....... They [ FJ Cruiser ] sell like hot cakes even now. The Arab here loves them...[ As well as the Wrangler ] Uses it for Dune Jumping... That's the main reason why the Patrol [ Armada over there in the US ], Land cruiser, Mitsubishi Pajero, all Japanese trucks basically due to the legendary reliability Great Review by the guys Great Job .....
I have an fj toyota 2008 4x4 with 230k miles and stills runs strong and reliable, and i love how simple was build it so basic, nothing fancy. Just you and the road. Fj forever 😍
This would be a tough decision for me as well. Having a warranty is good but the best kind of warranty is the kind that you never have to use. I still can't decide.

I was looking to get a fj with a manual trans and under 100k miles. I looked all over for 4 months and couldn’t find one anywhere near my price range of 25k. I ended up getting a 2 door wrangler with a jks lift, 33” tires and upgraded bumpers/ rock sliders.
The Jeep and FJ are similar offroad (the newer Jeep has the advantage with gearing etc,) but 75% of my driving is on paved roads where the FJ is much better in handling and feel....except when you want to back up. Rearward vision sucks, but the backup camera is awesome
I remember my 2008 RAV-4 had a swinging rear door, that swung the way the Wrangler does and not the way the FJ does. It does make more sense to swing towards the drivers side for US curbs.
I've had my '08 FJ for 6 years. 115k miles with a 3" lift and 33's and never had a single problem. Here's to hoping Toyota will revive it at some point.

So I own a JLU Sahara and we also have an FJ in the family. Love them both. The FJ does indeed have a bullet-proof drivetrain and rides a bit nicer than the Wrangler BUT (and it’s a pretty big one) the FJ NEEDS to be properly maintained and babied a bit. Example: we took them both on a fishing trip with both towing fishing boats. The trip included some water fording and deeper mud. Even though the FJ had new Toyota brake parts, the brakes warped and rusted badly when I failed to hose everything off immediately after we returned. The radio screen has gelled and the power windows work when they’re in the mood. But please don’t allow any of this to deter you. The FJ is an outstanding vehicle and the overall build quality is great. It’s just not a Jeep and can’t do the things a Jeep does. The FJ has “baked-in” quality and the Jeep has 70 years of baked-in ability. They’re for different buyers.
Keeps are Junk, no thanks. You bought a new FJ and kept the mileage low your FJ is worth more now, than when you bought it new.Essentially the vehicle has paid you to drive it.
Toyota should just bring back the FJ as a proper 4door SUV that also has a removable roof to replace the Land Cruiser and to compete against Wrangler & Bronco.
@@garrettsmith8286 I'd love to see a new FJ compete with the wrangler and bronco. Toyota may come out with something but it will be detuned and conservatively designed for safety and reliability which will make it slower and less capable. Times have changed but toyota hasn't.
The Willys may not have a locker but it does have a limited slip (AntiSpin) rear diff. We have that sane exact Jeep (color and all) and it’s a beast in the mud and soft dirt.
I can't watch a 22 minute long commercial with no action, but I will take that super nice FJ any day over that Jeep. The off road I'm in has a few FJs and they're a little fat, but they just don't break ever. They just keep going like a fine watch!

I drive a 2012 Toyota FJ with 204,000 miles. It just goes and goes and goes. Never had any mechanical issues.
Just turned 170k miles on my 2012.

Got one of the first FJs in Australia to arrive back in 2011, still going strong with over 200,000km. It's crossed deserts, gone to the beach and is cool in the snow. It's definitely a keeper. Even have a camper trailer to match the hornet yellow :)

Still driving my 2007 FJ Cruiser. It has been my daily driver until I retired and since then, I have used it as a cross country off roader. Nearly 250,000 miles and it is still totally reliable on the highway and off-roading. The windshield is a rock magnet and I am on number four, that has been my only major complaint. It has taken me to 33 National Parks and I have been able to be gone for weeks at a time. The FJ is a four season beast; that will go any where, anytime. I only wish that Toyota still manufactured the FJ Cruiser, I'd buy a new one tomorrow and still keep my 2007.

@@barrydraper absolutely, and I would take a Viper over a Vette without question. We have similar mods, but his Jeep is just a bit more capable since I haven't done a solid axle swap. I've had a few people take pictures of the FJ at stop lights, and that gives a pride of ownership like nothing else.

The fact that there is even a comparison between a 2014 and a 2021 shows how impressive the FJ is. I'm NEVER selling mine!
The FJ’s Engine from 2007 to 2009 (maybe 2010 also) had a single VVT engine making 239/278 hp/torque verses the newest one since 2010 with dual VVT making 260 or 270 hp and 270 torque. The oil filter of the first version was on top and the one on the latest one is a cartridge type below the engine.
The dimples in the covers are to hold nuts and bolts when you work on the car.

I just got my Jeep worked on and heard a large clunk. I pulled over and looked at it everything seemed fine. I think my mechanic must have left a tool that's somewhere on the interstate. 😂🤣😂

The 4.0 v6 has been around since like 02, so about 18 years. Still very stout. Also there are a couple of these motors with over 500k, for sure I know one lives in a 4runner. The motor did get a small change around 2010, with a small bump in power and a different tune for efficiency. One of the reasons it feels slower in the 5th gen 4runners (that added with ~500lbs makes it slower to 60 than 4th gen 4runners)
I would get the pre-2010 engine any day.

I've had my FJ for a little over a year now, and it never ceases to make me smile. Surprising offroad capability and insane mechanical durability makes it such an easy choice for me over other offroad SUVs. Just put a lift on it and now I have the ride quality of a Lexus!
Having owned a Jeep for a few years, there is no way the Wrangler would have won.
Warranty and customer support alone would make me go Toyota.

@@Tsalinger Several mfrs have similar. It's not just FCA. Everybody is trying to meet emissions as global population and driving population grows. I'm wondering if engine longevity from most mfrs is going to suffer as they tune leaner and leaner.
Use an additive like Duralube if you're concerned about increased engine wear from oiling issues with start-stop. Startup is allegedly when most wear occurs. Oils are even available now with similar properties to Duralube...built in.

When you are assessing vehicle value, remember that you are paying for the mileage the vehicle has left in it, not the mileage it has already travelled. FJ is easily the more economical vehicle (and way cooler!).
That's one way of seeing it. In reality the longevity of a vehicle depends more on corrosion and general deterioration (esp. UV damage to paintwork and rubber parts) than on wear to the moving parts. Plus, as any economist will tell you, all value is subjective.

Love my FJ, “ Tank” currently has 328,0000 miles and going strong. He has really been the perfect vehicle. 2007 purchased in 2008 with 55,000 miles for 16,000 dollars.
As a former owner and auto technician at both Chrysler and Toyota I have seen Jeep wranglers on stock wheels/tires come in at 30k miles for warranty work on the front end. The steering rods would have scary amounts of play at their ends. This was a DAILY occurrence! On the other hand my FJC was still nice and tight at 200k.

I've owned three jeeps over my lifetime. All have had issues of some kind except the Kaiser. The two Chrysler models were money pits! Now that fiat owners and produces them I steer clear. Purchased a 2014 toyota fj two years ago after much research. I've got to say it's the toughest best all around 4x4 I've ever owned. Told my wife when I die to bury me in it!

I had a 2011 Fj, trail teams edition. I never should have sold it. Big mistake.
FJ may look old but is more comfortable to drive both on and off road. Quieter cabin too especially on highway speeds. I got an 08 Trail Teams and it has 255000km (158450 miles). I still enjoy driving it everyday.

Excellent review. Personally, being a 2008 4Runner owner (I've had it for 12 years and it still looks and drives like new), I would trust the FJ for the long haul.
I have these things to say about my FJ: I brought it new in 2008; I have put over 280k mikes on it; I changed the alternator, and it still runs and looks great (when it’s clean) and it is reliable! Oh, the best part...it’s a Toyota. A Jeep will come 2nd...and a distance 2nd.

I have an 07 FJ and it has held up very well. Suspension is original and it still feels like a new smooth drive with no squeaks. Mechanically has been excellent, people are always shocked if they ride in it when they find out it is a 2007. Still feels like a new vehicle.
I am an FJ Cruiser fan sense 2007. I bought a 2010 with under 90k miles. I stole it from the dealer. I purchased before detailed. I bought the last day of the month, and the end of the quarter March 31, and the lot needed the sale. Having sold automobiles, I knew it was the best time to buy to get the best price. I have less than 100 k miles now. Being in excellent condition, if I sold now with today's market, I'd get 30-40% more than what I paid. Btw, at 63yrs old, it's the best auto I've ever owned.
Over New Years i bought an 07 FJ in Oklahoma for $12,300. Had 176k miles. Has atrac, locking diffs, TRD everything except color matched roof, lights, aggressive all terrains, and bilstien 5100s.
Since I've had it, I've put over 14k miles, installed a smitty bumper and winch, and did an Old Man Emu heavy duty strut swap up front (medium duty for the back is on the way). I love it. I can't hack the jeeps front flex, and jeeps are a little better over super rocky and articulated terrain, but on everything else I can keep up with jeeps and on the road its 2x more comfortable
Love my Toyota BOFs. Had a 5th gen new T4r, only lost 1k on it over 3 years. Traded it in on a GX460. So dependable and rugged. Vault like. Love Toyota TEQ.

The FJ cruiser is my dream car. But they all need a roof rack on them to finish the look. I am trying to find one that is in good condition that I can afford.
Before you buy it. Be sure to check the geometry and wind noise. The FJ is notorious that; not all roof racks are created equal. Expecially, how they affect you MPG.

Between these two I reckon the FJ is the safer bet, prices on those are bound to start climbing at some point. Toyota made an instant classic with the FJ and solidified it’s status by discontinuing it a few years later. They are only getting rarer while the Jeep is getting more common.
Ive owned a Jeep I bought brand new and honestly can say it was the worst purchase I've ever made. That thing spent months in the shop getting fixed and when the driver's seat electronics kept failing and either pinning the seat against the steering wheel or reclining it all the way back all Jeep could say was that I had to keep getting it towed back to them to have the computer reset. That was their solution... I now own a FJ which I bought second hand and never had an issue. I would never recommend anyone ever buys a jeep.
That Jeep will be in the shop needing repairs within the first 20k miles. That Toyota with minimal maintenance will go 500k on the original drivetrain. I own a used car dealer, I stay far away from Chrysler products. Maybe exception for the older 4.0 manual Jeeps, but nothing automatic from Chrysler.
PS. Stay away from most any car with a CVT transmission. (Mainly Nissan 04+)
I took a FJ in on trade the other day. 260k miles, front bumper smashed to pieces, driver fender crumpled, 4 different tires, dings, scratches, interior is nasty but I’m keeping it for myself. I’m fixing it up and building it. I’ve always wanted one but wasn’t willing to pay the price. ($2,200 invested so far). Ordering parts this week for 18” wheels with 35” tires, 3” lift, few other mildly tasteful mods. Can’t wait!!

You can still by 2020 Fjs in the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. Here in Australia we got the 2011 to 2014 model. So short release. Since covid here the prices have gone up about 5 to 10k due to everyone being stuck at inside the borders. You'll pay between 25k and 50k for an FJ here. The outback of Australia is all arid dessert you"ll rarely see a Jeep you will see almost exclusively Toyota's and the Fj is one of the most reliable. Jeeps due to solid front axel are better for weekend 4x4 up harder tracks that require better flex, but if you want a unique vehicle that'll get you into the most remote places on earth and back FJ all the way. Also they forget to mention the 2013 to 2014 fjs come with crawl control and dual tank for 157 litres of fuel. At least here they do. They can be thirsty and if you have kids your probably better of with the prado which shares the same mechanicals. We got one spec with all the fruit. I love mine there's nothing like it really.

OK, My First FJ-C Was an 07.(lost in Divorce)I ABSOLUTELY Loved It. Fast Forward, I got 'The Last' FJ- Cruiser a 2014, that I was able to Order with All the Options Just Before they were SOLD-OUT. Plus I got the color I wanted. Now, and Here is where I Sometimes get into a Bit of Trouble. Jeep people Love Their Jeeps.(you guys are Snobs for sure)But That's OK. I 'Get It'. However, Even with Only Rear-Lockers, the FJ Has Done the Rubicon Trail by the Industry's Best & Well Known Off Road Drivers, and Had Zero Problems.(There is a Booklet with All the Photos and 'Story Telling' that came with my First FJ) SO, As a Result, I Often Proclaim that my FJ Is as Good as Any Jeep Rubicon, but Then, 'Them Words' can End in a Verbal Altercation. So Be It. I live In/On the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and take my 'Stock-Rig' Anywhere Without a Problem One. Plus, the Ride is Superior in Comfort.(I Know, Because I once had a Jeep) Two Months Ago, a Total Stranger FJ Collector, Offered me 10K Above What I paid for mine Seven Years Ago.(I Have Yet to have 28K Miles Racked Up on it)(I'm Sure that had Something to do with it) But, since I live Where I 'Off Road', I Don't have to Travel There, to Get There) All in All, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE My FJ and What it Can Do, and Where it can Take Me. I just bought last winter for $27G a 2014 with 87,000 miles Toyota Certified. It has a 4year Toyota warranty or 140,000 miles bumper to bumper. Had to take out a separate insurance to cover to true value. Blue book is low, true market value is way above now.
Last week found same FJ but a 2012 no warranty and 60,000. Miles for $34G
When I bought my 1st truck, I needed it for hauling stuff to do projects around the house. I found a 1st gen 2wd Tacoma and suspension needs some TLC so I bought Bilstein Shocks and upgraded springs and ball joints. I came from a car background so I know I want good shocks for it instead of the cheap stuff at AutoZone. After doing the shocks, I didn't know that I transformed the truck and my mechanic said that I need bigger tires now. I have no idea what he's talking about but I did noticed the truck looks funny with the wheels. It looks off, it doesn't match. So I did went bigger. My friend said to go off roading so I gave it a try, I liked it and now I want more.
I started researching for a good 4x4, might be a truck or SUV. I looked at everything from F150 to Xterras. I liked the jeep since I grew up in Philippines, the jeep design is prominent there and I always like the look. I looked at the FJ because of it's heritage, but the rear doors were a turnoff, the windshield and the massive blind spots. I didn't like the 4 door Tacomas because the passenger space feels small and tight. I wanted something that I can depend on, go on an adventure with my wife and a potentially growing family, so I got a 4Runner Off-Road.
I drive a 2012 FJ in Army Green that just rolled 100,000 on the odometer. A few things to point out that I love:
1) The stock stereo is decent, but it’s also super easy to replace. If you want satellite radio and multiple cameras, even in unit OBD2 monitoring, there are plenty of options.
2) The half doors are great for a single person, a couple or someone with a dog. And “in a pinch” they’re way better than a two-door.
3) The wheelbase is the perfect compromise between the 2-door Jeep and the Unlimited.
4) Although it’d be awesome if the doors and roof could come off, temperature inside was never an issue living in Phoenix, AZ or SoCal. And it handled cold winter weather in Flagstaff, AZ and southwest CO well, too.
5) Although the aftermarket for the FJ may not be as large as that for the Jeep, it’s still pretty huge. Lots of parts from Land Cruisers, 4 Runners and Tacomas are interchangeable with the FJ and there were plenty made specifically for it as well. And modding is just as addictive: I’ve added a steel front bumper, custom modified TRD front skid plate, RCI skids front-to-back, heavy duty DOM sliders. Still need to add suspension but the factory one has tackled some gnarly trails in Moab, UT; Ouray, CO and all over AZ (Crown King!).
I’ve been drooling over the new Bronco but I also can’t imagine parting with my FJ. The styling is odd but it grows on you. It’s comfortable and it’s capability constantly surprises me. So glad you posted this and your other video right after picking up the FJ. Now I’m craving taking it out on some trails!
Easy to replace but you'll have to do some splicing to get the new radio to work with your sub-woofer.
Getting the sub to work was easier than the headset and harness install itself (which wasn’t hard), so having to do some basic wiring shouldn’t deter anyone from swapping out the factory stereo.

2008 FJ Cruiser had since new. 46K miles; 3 inch lift, sliders, 33's, backup camera, CDT speakers and Kenwood head unit, AUX bumper lights. Zero dents, scratches or rust (AZ). Immaculate and unless Toyota can come up with something better; I'll never sell. Test drove a Jeep before I bought the Toyota and there was no comparison. There's a reason FJ's hold their value.

I was looking to get a fj with a manual trans and under 100k miles. I looked all over for 4 months and couldn’t find one anywhere near my price range of 25k. I ended up getting a 2 door wrangler with a jks lift, 33” tires and upgraded bumpers/ rock sliders.

The Jeep and FJ are similar offroad (the newer Jeep has the advantage with gearing etc,) but 75% of my driving is on paved roads where the FJ is much better in handling and feel....except when you want to back up. Rearward vision sucks, but the backup camera is awesome

I remember my 2008 RAV-4 had a swinging rear door, that swung the way the Wrangler does and not the way the FJ does. It does make more sense to swing towards the drivers side for US curbs.
I've had my '08 FJ for 6 years. 115k miles with a 3" lift and 33's and never had a single problem. Here's to hoping Toyota will revive it at some point.

So I own a JLU Sahara and we also have an FJ in the family. Love them both. The FJ does indeed have a bullet-proof drivetrain and rides a bit nicer than the Wrangler BUT (and it’s a pretty big one) the FJ NEEDS to be properly maintained and babied a bit. Example: we took them both on a fishing trip with both towing fishing boats. The trip included some water fording and deeper mud. Even though the FJ had new Toyota brake parts, the brakes warped and rusted badly when I failed to hose everything off immediately after we returned. The radio screen has gelled and the power windows work when they’re in the mood.
But please don’t allow any of this to deter you. The FJ is an outstanding vehicle and the overall build quality is great. It’s just not a Jeep and can’t do the things a Jeep does. The FJ has “baked-in” quality and the Jeep has 70 years of baked-in ability. They’re for different buyers.

@@garrettsmith8286 I'd love to see a new FJ compete with the wrangler and bronco. Toyota may come out with something but it will be detuned and conservatively designed for safety and reliability which will make it slower and less capable. Times have changed but toyota hasn't.

The idea behind the clam shell doors on the FJ. Are to give you the look of a 2, but the access of a 4 door.
The Willys may not have a locker but it does have a limited slip (AntiSpin) rear diff. We have that sane exact Jeep (color and all) and it’s a beast in the mud and soft dirt.

I love this comparison. An old old FJ versus a new Jeep, and all I want is the FJ. Toyota styling and reliability versus an ugly green dinosaur.

It's easier to put the Jeep in 4 high or 4 low if your moving. My owners manual even recommends what speed....

I can't watch a 22 minute long commercial with no action, but I will take that super nice FJ any day over that Jeep. The off road I'm in has a few FJs and they're a little fat, but they just don't break ever. They just keep going like a fine watch!
