@@peterp2153 Don't know anything about that, but I will say that playing drums at that level for that long definitely takes a toll on your health, especially on your back. It's definitely the most physical instrument in that way. Most drummers, as they get older, hit a wall beyond which their playing just isn't the same.
Alex was a monster drummer. So many great grooves. Enjoy your retirement Alex.

Maybe Alex at 71 years old, realizes he doesn't have much time left on this earth and would rather spend it with his family than on the road playing music. As he's gotten older he's probably also gotten wiser. I love playing music, but I certainly don't idolize it. There's more important things in life like friends and family.
Every ending has the potential for a new beginning, Alex will be grieving until he's done. From personal experience, you never get over these kind of things.... you just get used to it. I firmly believe that Alex WILL be back and will be even more badass than ever before!!!
I am so sorry that Alex is going though this but I don't blame him they have been playing music all thier lifes and now it rime to retire. Thank you Alex for sharing your wonderful brother with us and I hope that one day we will see you play again even if for a little bit. The man chose to RETIRE. Lots of us guys do. Just not musicians, because they love to CREATE music, and PLAY music. But even a musician can choose to hang up the cleats, as athletes say. The lead singer of REM, and the Cars did it. David Coverdale won't tour again. Plenty of others have chosen to give it up and just retire, too.

I know of a lot of Pro drummers when they hit their 60's things change. If you never turned 60 + then you wouldn't have a clue. Some have heard of the 7 year change ie: when you'r 14 your different then when your 7 etc etc etc. We all have a shelf life folks. Big Al didn't *need* to continue to play - key word need. If Al was 35 years old when his bro passed it would be different. Obviously Al's choice is not what most people want and like, even Sammy seams not to like it or get it. But I get it, the 7 year change... When he turned 70 he's not the same 42 etc. I totally respect Al's decision *****He went out on top!! Not like Crue and Kiss and the rest of the 'karaoke' phucking drama queens that are a beyond a mockery joke to themselves and their legacy. AVH Legacy is phucking epiC!!! Respect to the fullest degree! And `respect is thee highest complement I or any one can give. Respect is something earned respect is thee only thing you take to the grave, deal with it. Peace

You must be a musician! Musicians KNOW being a musician is never really a choice - you just are. Once a musician always a musician. You may quit “it” but “it” will NEVER quit you. Whatever you do, wherever you go, if you ever were, you ARE a musician.

There are different motivations for musicians to play an instrument. One motivation that could not be discouraged, is if one LOVES music, you can’t stop. All the best Mr. Van Halen, great work.

I have to imagine it's like John Deacon with Queen. When the person you love to do something with is gone, that something loses its luster. There's nothing wrong with that; it's part of the grieving cycle and provides closure. Best of everything to Alex!

All my heroes are dying. When my Mother died so did my desire to play music. I quit 10 years ago and have lost all desire to play.
Sorry for your loss but I bet if you start playing again you will feel her presence. It seems like she was the one who encourage you the most. ❤❤❤

Of course I would love to see him play more , that's because I grew up with Van Halen's music , so my desire is a little selfish. Being an adult now , and having lost family myself , I understand what he's going thru for the most part...I respect and understand his decision... it was a GREAT run and GREAT music !!!!

Again, as much as he contributed to the very unique backing vocals, he contributed very little to the actual writing of the the songs. As well, EVH would often say how he wanted the bass line to be, then M.A. would just play it.

AVH probably got tired of hearing Hagar ramble-on about his (alleged) glorious time in the band. At the end of the day Van Halen remains the sole brand/property of AVH. It's his choice to end it as only he see's fit.

Right. It’s HIS~Alex’s~ choice. As much as we the fans would love to see and hear him play with Wolfgang and whomever they chose to sing lead, the fact remains is that the man lost his brother. They had a bond that was obviously deeper than most sibling relationships, and everyone grieves differently. Yeah, I mean, I’d think he’d like to keep a little something, maybe to pass down to his kids, his nephew’s kids, but alas again, it’s his choice. I’ve never gotten why “fans” are so very critical of every single aspect of an artist’s life. We don’t know what that man is going through, how he feels, or what he’s thinking (and lemme just say, neither does Sammy, despite his personally knowing Alex) so who are we to speculate and judge?? Judge not, lest ye be judged. I have some respect left for Sammy’s actual discography, his work, but I’m not getting all this grumbling, begrudging, whining from him as a man. He needs to take a cue from Elvis and admit he’s “just a singer”, and not a shrink or be spewing out all his philosophy of other artists. Yet, since I’m nobody, I think maybe the auction was the only way Alex felt like he could send a clear message about his intentions. I pray Alex is and continues in good health. I pray Sammy does well in his future endeavors. I just wish my feed would contain less negativity from him.

Dont go to the 2024 concert, I just left early, it was horrible!!! Played songs I never heard of, waited 2 hours in the rain, loverboy never came out , me and hundreds of people left early, never been so disappointed

Got to admire Alex Van Halen, he's in his 70s, the band is done, he had a good run, not like some of these other rockers who age, can't admit to the passage of time, end up on stage, lip synching, physically unable to do the shows anymore,looking ridiculous, Vince Neil fell off a stage a couple of weeks ago, I think Motley Crue is on their third or fourth reunion tour.
The gear was largely old broken down stuff designed to entertain people in arenas in the 80s. No brainer. Has little to no practical use now.
Storing drum kits is a lot different than guitars . Maybe he just wants to downsize and stop dealing with the storage of his various ,mammoth kits.
A fitting end- his entire life he played with his brother - they accomplished amazing things -his brother is gone -- I applaud him for knowing when to quit
Alex played his whole life with his brother. Now that Eddie is no longer with him he doesn't have his partner in music anymore. Not hard to imagine he's no longer interested. He owes nobody anything. Enjoy the rest of his life with his family

I met Alex Van Halen back when I was 18 years old in Southern California at an AMPM. He was a rude drunken jackass.
This is interesting considering the rumors going around about Alex trying to persuade Jason Newsted and Joe Satriani to come together to play Van Halen tunes. Newsted confirmed this and was called out for mentioning it. Satriani is preparing for the "Best of All Worlds" tour with Anthony, Hagar, and Jason Bonham.
I feel like everybody is trying to profit off Eddie's death--gear manufacturers especially. All the "reissues" of certain things like pickups, guitars, amps, electronics--it's kind of meh.
I wouldn't be surprised if Alex is doing this for publicity and acquires new gear at a later date to perform a few shows. He can afford it.
Musicians auctioning their iconic gear seems to be part of the music industry's current trend of artists selling their catalog rights back to labels for large lump sums, as well.

Alex played drums pretty hard and he is not that big of a guy. =Lots of wear and tear on the body especially with long tours with little breaks.
