Selection Tools: Photoshop CS5

This is a beginner tutorial on how the selection tools work. It covers the Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee tools, the Lasso Tools, and briefly the Magic Wand and the Quick Selection Tools.

Can I move selections on a layer independently?

I'm not sure what you mean. But I will give it a shot. If you make a selection, you can move the contents of the selection by click hold and dragging the area inside the marching ants with the Move Tool. If you want to move the selection (marching ants only) without affecting the image below try going to Select, then choosing Transform Selection.
