Thanks for making this video. I have a slightly older 4 hp Johnson. Just finished repairing the pull start and really appreciate your instuction and encouragement.😊 The end of the spring had broke so I needed to bend a hook at the end. Used a map gas torch to heat it up and bend it.👍 Again thanks for your video.
I bought a boat, motor (Evinrude 4 Deluxe, 1992) and trailer for a few hundred bucks. because the motor wouldn't start and the owner gave up. I found your videos for the 77 Evinrude and it's almost identical to mine. With your help I rebuilt the rewind starter, carb, fuel pump and the thing starts first pull and runs like new. I just wanted to say thanks for your awesome videos and all the help they provided me and many others!!
Great video, got a 4hp 72 on Craigslist. Last person didn't install the washer on the inside cup were the spring is. Had the hanging up plus my bolt was coming lose. Installed the washer boom back in business. Thank you again for your help
Thanks for the great info. I have the repair manual and your video made it so much easier. I had to use a paint scraper for tensioning the spring but it worked great. So much for special tools. Thanks again.
Thanks for the great video. Reading the section of your included image of the manual regarding the 1&1/2 turns, I think they were referring to turns on the starter not the flywheel. That is what I did then unwound enough rope to just fit thru the case and it worked out well. I also built a “tool” to hold the gears in mesh from a triangular piece of sheet metal resting in the cover track. Thanks again for the video.
thank you for this! Just pulled my assembly off the engine and the spring went flying! I'm hopeful that your video will help me get everything back on without too much trouble.
Thanks! When I first watched this video I thought this job was going to be pretty difficult. It's was. But I got it all put back together and it works great now! All this trouble over a brass collar wearing out and cutting the rope on the pull start. 🚣
Hi do you know the part name or number of the black cog that connects with the top shaft when pulled. Great video I am trying to repair an old Johnson 4.0 Deluxe
The part number for the idler gear is 312707. Will be replacing this gear and bushings today on my 73 Lightwin so this video is a great resource. Bushings part number is 312707 if needed. There are three.
Mine came off a 76 15hp evinrude cause I didn’t use a spanner to take down the big nut like you did 😂 live and learn . Lithium grease makes it smooth, cool
I bought the same motor 1977 4hp ,,story is had not been used for 7 years..the starter rope was hanging out. So your video helped me wind that..and gratefully you showed the nut on the handle to solve my other problem.
Can you share the Manuel by any chance? My spring seems to be jammed because my starter wheel doesn’t sit back down after I pull the chord, it just stays up with the black gear on the fly wheel
Didn't yours have the washer on the main spring side? I do not see it here. I'd think it would cause the issues you showed, as to make it work without the washer you'd need to loosen the big 5/8 center screw.
I followed the video and everything went well and seems to move properly…but I can’t seem to get enough tension in the spring to get the recoil to work properly…the rope barely goes back on. Any suggestions? Thx
Whats the engine cc displacment in these evinrudes? And difference between a 3 hp and a 4hp engine? The carbsetup? More cc?I got a 3 hp 1968 myself but the starter is missing the spring and the cupstop on the backside is missing as well.
I don't understand what the reasoning is here...I just did one. I just fed the pull cord around and around the spool until there was tension and went two more wraps. There is a guide TAB under the spool but the cord will slide by it.
Its the exact same process as the 9.5. Your fins are just more square, and the drive shaft is a bit longer. However, the roll pin and seal at the top arent on the 9.5. Alright maybe I will. It'll be a month while I gather parts and funds.
I have this same boat motor but I don't have a starter. Does anyone know where I could find the starter. I've been looking but no luck. Any help would be great.
I reckon a second pair of hands might be very useful. Tomorrows Corona Virus Lockdown task. Friday 15 May 2020. I have to do the recoil but the engine only has 32psi per cylinder.
I hope they sell these new because there is no way in hell I’m doing this. Tried it once on a pull start and it was a absolute disaster with that spring. NOPE. Not for me.
Great video and amazing explanation... but what garbage engineering... i have the same starter type assembly but mine is on a 1992 Deluxe 4hp... I got it for 100$ because the pull rope broke But what a pain to put out back together...

I used this video to repair the starter on my 1979 4hp. Your approach is much better than the Evinrude manual. Thanks a lot.
You’re doing God’s work here! I’ve used this video as a reference to fix my starter 3 times. Without you I wouldn’t be fishing much this summer!

Thanks for the video. It was much easier doing it this way. Putting some oily lubricant on the spring helped with the friction.
Brandon, you are incredibly patient!!! A God given gift.
Excellent video, thanks for posting. Quite a few videos on the 4hp Lightwin on UA-cam, but yours is the first to tackle the starter. Well done!
Thanks for the great video.

Just got a 3806A 3 hp from my father in law. I Love your channel.
Thanks a lot for this video, you are the first one who share how reparing starter for small motor
Well thanks!
Thanks. Have exact same motor. My very first outboard project. This helped tremendously
Thanks! Without your video I would never have gotten it fixed, much appreciated!
Thanks for,the video, you have more patience than me! Mine would have been on E Bay by now! Well done!
Thanks for this video... i was able to put a small chunk of wood in to hold the starter gear up... it's still a job that needs a lot of patience...
I just finished one myself complete pain but this video helped I used my overhead winch to and zip tied the stopper on the plastic gear worked great
Great job working through it all. I know some guys that would have used a sledgehammer when the rope wouldn't retract.... Thanks!
Thank you for this video! We followed it to a T and it's fixed!!

Thank you for the video helped a lot, I had a question is a Honda 5.0 4 stroke Outboard motor good or is a evinrude 2 stroke 9hp better?
“Spring is picking up the camera, wrapped around the tripod, un-cool”. LOL. Spring loaded shit is such a pain in the ass. Nice job.
Omg. Using the flywheel to put tension to retract the metal is genius.
I couldn't agree more.
THANK YOU for Showing I was missing the tiller bolt nut. Now the arm stays in place.
Isnt it annoying without the nut on?
Now, did you come here looking to fix the handle, or were just watching the 4 HP videos?
I bought the same motor 1977 4hp ,,story is had not been used for 7 years..the starter rope was hanging out. So your video helped me wind that..and gratefully you showed the nut on the handle to solve my other problem.
This was awesom! Great video, saved me a lot of cursing and possibly modifying the motor into an anchor. haha
Thanks so much! Helped me to restring my 68' 3hp Johnson rewind starter
Can you share the Manuel by any chance? My spring seems to be jammed because my starter wheel doesn’t sit back down after I pull the chord, it just stays up with the black gear on the fly wheel
I'm getting ready to work on a 72,I was wondering if you mite remember what size nut fit on the main bolt to hold it all together?
i believe 5/8
Didn't yours have the washer on the main spring side? I do not see it here. I'd think it would cause the issues you showed, as to make it work without the washer you'd need to loosen the big 5/8 center screw.
Excellent camera work.
The camera half the time isn’t in the project
I followed the video and everything went well and seems to move properly…but I can’t seem to get enough tension in the spring to get the recoil to work properly…the rope barely goes back on. Any suggestions? Thx
More turning on the spring
Thx.,.I’ll try tmrw!
Do you have a pdf of the repair/service manual for this motor. I just picked one up at a sale.
what size socket is the centre bolt as none of my metric or imperial sockets will fit
Whats the engine cc displacment in these evinrudes? And difference between a 3 hp and a 4hp engine? The carbsetup? More cc?I got a 3 hp 1968 myself but the starter is missing the spring and the cupstop on the backside is missing as well.
Thanks. It worked perfectly 🙏🙏
Thank you!
Hi
You are showa a manual at 27:05. Where can I find a good one? Is it free?
Thank you for good videos
I don't understand what the reasoning is here...I just did one. I just fed the pull cord around and around the spool until there was tension and went two more wraps. There is a guide TAB under the spool but the cord will slide by it.
How do you get the gear to engage spinning the motor top immediately on pull? Anyone know?
If you have on can you do a video on a 78 6hp ? Wanna redo the lower since mine is damaged and I've never done one b4

how much psi per cylinder should this motor have? i have the 1985 4.5hp motor
There is no good answer for that. A guess, 80.
but even then, it'll probably be fine lower than that.
Usually, if its even, youre good to go.
I have this same boat motor but I don't have a starter. Does anyone know where I could find the starter. I've been looking but no luck. Any help would be great.
ebay
@@BrandonsGarage all are used and they no longer manufactured
where can i get that bushing?
Is that motor or two-stroke or 4-stroke
Two
Where did you get the manual?
You got a spring winding tool.both your hands.
I reckon a second pair of hands might be very useful. Tomorrows Corona Virus Lockdown task. Friday 15 May 2020. I have to do the recoil but the engine only has 32psi per cylinder.
Yes yes yes! now i ll try to fix my rope problem, had same isues ahhahhahha thanks
I hope they sell these new because there is no way in hell I’m doing this. Tried it once on a pull start and it was a absolute disaster with that spring. NOPE. Not for me.
Just got done doing the same pull cord there is a much easier way of doing it I'm putting a video out soon and I will send it to you
Sounds good!
any chance I can get your video Ryan? thanks
Matt Mark yea I would like to see it also
Ryan. i clicked your name and the recoil video is not on youtube.
Like to see that video as well. Good luck with your classic outboard.
Too much spring pretension?
You're a clumsy dude haha
Great video and amazing explanation... but what garbage engineering... i have the same starter type assembly but mine is on a 1992 Deluxe 4hp...
I got it for 100$ because the pull rope broke
But what a pain to put out back together...
But! Had it not have been a pain, perhaps the owner wouldnt have sold the motor for so little, as he could have fixed it. Hm?
@@BrandonsGarage I totally agree but it’s still bad engineering though
