Tarkashi Wooden Block Making with Mohal Lal Sharma | Tarkashi Wood Inlay

Tarkashi craft utilizes gleaming metal wires (tar), set in the wood to craft intricate geometric patterns or floral designs. Tar means “wire” in Hindi. The technique of inlaying fine flattened wire of brass, copper or silver in wood is called Tarkashi. Tarkashi Inlay is believed to have come from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. The craft was patronized by the royals of Jaipur and Amber. Sawai Jai Singh, during his regime, invited Sri Sarwan Lal Misra a master craftsman from Mainpuri who started practicing and teaching this craft in Jaipur. Few people learnt the craft and carried the tradition forward.
At present there are about four families and fifteen individuals practicing this craft in Jaipur. These families are well regarded and belong to the Jangid community. We had the chance to meet the celebrated artist and learn about Takashi Art in detail with Mohan Lal Sharma!
Mohan Lal Sharma is a renowned Tarkashi artist with 45 years of experience. He embarked on his artistic journey at the age of 15, carrying on the tradition he learned as a child. His wife is also an accomplished Tarkashi artist. With a National Award to his name, he aspires to see the new generation of artists thrive with their original ideas and innovations.
