I agree that it turned out great. But the backstory is that Paul Simon used to write songs in a dark bathroom. One day he turned off the light and said, hello darkness, my old friend, and the rest is history.
"People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" - how could Simon envision the smartphone age so accurately 50 years ago? People texting without speaking, people watching without listening. Does she know the reference to "neon gods? Connecting with your daughter at 13 is one of the biggest challenges a parent can face. I found the love of music was one way to connection with my daughter at that age. I've always had music playing in the background her whole life so she grew up listening to all the great music of the 60's and 70's. It's the diversity of music genres that I believe helps a young person develop as sense of appreciation for all music, jazz, rock, metal, classical, modern, progressive, prog, bluegrass, certain country. But I did find that at 13, she would push back or reject more out of a sense of rebellion then because she didn't like something I wanted her to hear. Hello darkness my old friend, was probably written as he loved writing and composing songs in his Bathroom with the lights out. It became a friend to him where he was most comfortable. I also believe Neon Lights were flashing in the Darkness of his room. His song was the warning and Disturbed's song was the rage that no one listened.
What's truly amazing here , is not the music , it is a parent spending quality time with his kids .....and introducing them to artistic culture of music and keeping the classics and music alive ..............
I've seen Paul Simon in concert sing The Sound of Silence. Brought tears to my eyes. And I went and saw Disturbed and listened to their version of Sound of Silence, it shook me to my core
The first time I heard The Sound of Silence by Disturbed I was affected for at least an hour. In my mind I imagine being one of the citizens of Germany during the Nazi regime during the time when their music was being stolen and people were literally being "silenced." I was shaking with rage and pain: the unfairness of it all, the need to speak up against injustice in all it's forms. This song brings tears to my eyes and electricity to my spine every time I hear it. I absolutely can't stop listening to Draiman's powerful, magical voice. To me it gives a voice to those who were and still are silenced by oppression and tyranny.
You definitely should check them out performing this live on Conan. Even better. He was also sick when he performed... You can't tell. It's flawless and even better than the video
When this song came out, it really changed how I felt about it. The power and darkness they were able to put into it, completely changed the lyrical meaning for me. Being a Marine combat vet, I perceive the lyrics differently than most. "Hello darkness my old friend"... "In restless dreams I walked alone"... Each person can percieve lyrics differently. This is a very emotional song for many people. Thanks for the reaction!
I am not a veteran, but a friend to several and I understand that this would resonate differently with you. I just wish to say a deeply heartfelt thank you, for your service and sacrifice. God bless you and yours.
I was scrolling the comments to figure out the original intent cause every time I hear this version it speaks more to me. I tried listening to the original performers version to see if I could grasp the intent. I value your input cause it does seem open to interpretation to me & seems to have so many levels. Now I'm not going to question anymore & just allow it to capture me up & speak to me rather than being stuck to one idea or original intent of the song. I pray as you listen it heals & helps you to a place of comfort & more. Thank you.
I've always been a fan of Disturbed and love how they're doing this song. It's his voice which is something! Love Simon and Garfunkel so what a song to cover!
I read a post elsewhere on UA-cam about this version that really resonated with me. Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning if people don't change. Disturbed's version expresses rage that we've ignored the warning.
Finally somebody smart enough not deposit during the reaction thank you you have to listen to it all the way through before you talk about it well done
My favorite line of all time is when Neil Young sings "It doesn't means that much to me to mean that much to YOU" no better words were ever spoken! That is how I met my best friend in the world, when I said that to him on my first day at my new job! I held his hand when he died of cancer!
I find his voice to be awful. He ruined this song for me. No need at all for him to angry it up. It's just my opinion but I really find this cover to be just god awful.

June O'Connor Gotta agree with you ! It reminds me of Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Kinda cool how someone can take a song and totally make it their own and put a different kind of meaning to it.
@@christineschmidt8494 wow, that Cover was very different from others too, in that : "hurt" was covered by the elder artist from Trent's version -- being very counter intuitive from almost any other cover song. It's great how you brought it up!
It’s a cool cover song done by disturbed and this version gave me chills down my spine and goosebumps. The way he looks at you like he’s piercing though your eyes and looking into one’s soul. He’s has a beautiful voice from low to high voice and awesome rasp in his voice as well. I don’t usually listen to heavy metal bands especially hard core heavy metal but this song proves he can sing any type of music, opera, rock, jazz, blues, country or even on country music.
The way this song crescendos is fantastic! Even though the lyrical content is in no way uplifting, every time I play this song it energizes me! I always replay it....once is never enough!
One of the few versions of any song that brings a tear to my eye just from the emotion in the performance. The most amazing and probably crowning moment of Disturbed’s body of work.
I hope you played *"Down With The Sickness"* for her too, to get the comparison, so she can understand what makes this song all that more amazing. (special)
I work at an airport and a couple of months ago I was on lunch talked to this guy for 30 minutes about work, the airport, etc. It wasn't until I got back from lunch and people were saying he was there so I googled him and I found out it was the lead singer of Disturbed. Cool guy none the less.
I love watching these videos - at last, a father who talks TO his children and not AT them. These kids must cherish this guy - there aren't many of his sort around!
Although the "Hello darkness..." part is amazing, it's the next part that always get to me; "I've come to talk with you again". Not talk to, but talk with, as in the darkness respond... Scares the crap out me 😳
It's funny to me that the first line makes her laugh. That first line almost always literally brings tears to my eyes. Creative expression can be taken in so many different ways I love it lol.
Thanks for this!! I'm a 64 year old former rock and roll band singer and I've heard every version of this song too. But every time I hear this version, I cry. Why? I wish I would have sung it like that.
This is easily one of the best covers of a song ever made! Right beside Careless Whisper by Seether and Zombie by Bad Wolves. The build up in this song from soft to powerful is amazing. Your daughter looked like she got a bit emotional toward the end (which who could blame her). Beautifully haunting song!
I love this version as well. the 'hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again' is I believe, a reference to depression and despair. It then leads nicely into the rest of the song. It is why this version sounds so different to the original
Did you guys know that the lead singer of Disturbed was a Jewish Cantor when he was younger? That is why he had such great control of his vocals for this song, and does such an amazing job! This is my favorite version of this song too although I've only heard this version and the original, I haven't heard any other covers.

Show her "Down With the Sickness" so she can see both ends of the Disturbed spectrum :). They are unreal live as well, David has such amazing ability as a vocalist, and the bands energy is all the way up to 11 the whole time.
He has a voice that can give me chills when he brings out the big guns. 5:19 Every...single...time...5:38. Those 'fry' notes, he nails them with such gravitas.
Its great how you use music to connect with your kids. im learning so much from you sir, thank you. i can tell your daughter is paying more attention to the "visual" of the video rather than the music or the artistry of it. she did not connect so much to the "music" than she did to the visual. perhaps use lyric videos? she seems to try to connect to what she is seeing rather than what she is hearing/feeling. what you are doing is fantastic, and important. thank you
I never thot anyone could top the original (and It’s one of my favorite poetic songs) BUT this version left me speechless. I wasn’t expecting what came. Paul Simon himself gave it his stamp of approval so....
Love this song and it’s an amazing version of it and can see why you didn’t pause it. Also love the extra info you give with the vids. And it proves what you said elsewhere that a lot of metal singers can really sing and not just shout stuff out.
What surprises me about this video is the number of times that the man and his daughter used the word 'like'. I have become sensitised to it. As for the song, having heard The Batchelors, then Simon and Garfunkel - especially later in years, in concert (it is brilliant) and then Disturbed - so different, so thought-provoking - I don'[t even think of it as a cover version because it stands so superbly in its own right and I believe it will do so down the years.
7:15 I know why the first few words "Hello darkness my old friend" makes her laugh. The opening words of this song is often played as a humorous audio meme to represent "dying inside" lol.
"Hello darkness my old friend" is so ubiquitous on the Internet and in movies. Doubtless she's seen a ton of memes and comedies riffing off of the famous line.
I grew up with all of Simon & Garfunkels incredible songs. Sound of Silence written during the Vietnam War, was so popular in the late '60s; however, my oldest son sent me Disturbs cover & I was OMG; what a set of pipes this man has; deep voice that grabs you by the throat.
true that, everyone thinks it's a reference to depression, but Paul liked the acoustics in the bathroom and took his guitar there to write, and in this particular instance to develop an idea that had remained from a dream. If i understand correctly the rest is a warning about Television (the neon god) but can equally, if not even more so, be applied to the modern technology (internet and social media) of more recent times. Great to see a father and daughter doing something like this together, thumbs up from me :)
TOTALLY AWESOME!!! This is something your daughter will always cherish, value, and remember, as such a special time shared with her dad! Especially partaking in something as meaningful as bringing the art of music into her life and you both sharing you feelings about what you both experienced together! As for the reaction,,, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, for not pausing it!! OOHHH I HATE THAT! Like you said, you had to let it flow to enjoy it all! I believe when you pause a song, you take so much out of it! It robs you of the building feeling to what could be a moving crescendo or hairs on your arm raising experience if you pause it just at that pivotal moment! Dad! I could tell in your facial expression throughout the whole song that you really enjoy this version/song!! I didn't get so much expression from your daughter during, so I wasn't sure,, but it was a privilege to be able to hear her truthful feelings of the song, as she appears to be a well raised, educated young lady from obviously a loving family!! Refreshing to see on such a social media type world where everything goes anymore! You both have a great chemistry! Thank you for sharing that with me,!!!!!!!!!!!
If my 11 year old daughter develops that kind of taste in music, I'll be a happy man. Currently, despite playing guitar in the school rock band, she still prefers pop that's a bit on the mindless side. But hopefully as she gets a little older her tastes will mature.
this has become one of my favorite songs of all time. I have heard the original but am more familiar with disturbed. your point about his point of view of a young kid when he wrote this song completely changed the way that I think about this song. it resonated with me more than any song has in a long time. thank you sir and keep up the good work!
Yes the live version on Conan is the first time I heard or saw this song by Disturbed...and my first thought was that they were going to trash this great song! Then it was...OMG, I love this version!!! My favorite now👍
@@DiyanneLea That performance was hands down the best version he has done....just watching his intensity and the power of his voice unfold....truly moving!!!!
After seeing Diturbed perform this song on Conan, Paul Simon, the creator of the original, reached out and PRAISED the band on doing their song justice. That alone is the greatest reward any band can receive when doing a cover that is so old and beloved by multiple generations.
I don’t know if anyone else does this but, with my kids, when a remake was released whether in music or movie I would make them watch or listen to the original release first and then they could listen to or watch the new one. It makes them appreciate the advancements and what people were able to do before the age of the computer and CGI and digital. It’s about respect and appreciation. All of my kids have said they plan to carry forward the same practice with their kids.
Disturbed takes us on an emotional voyage, the power and the intensity is truly magnificent, this is the best cover ever in my humble opinion, this band proves itself worthy of this song.
Top 3 favourite songs doesn’t matter who sings it, I choke up during it, it hits home some how. Number 1 song is Hurt sung by the late great Johnny Cash. It hits home too.

Dave Draiman does an iconic job!!! so glad the both of you reacted to this song!!!
Thanks, I really do love this song and this version, thanks for watching.
It almost look like she was getting teary-eyed at the end, lol I definitely could be wrong but I think I saw some fast blinking there
Maybe, not sure myself, but this one went pretty well.
Wow, what a great rendition . This was a song, voice and arrangement for the soul
Check out the live version it is moving to say the least :-0
You've raised one of the most stoic 13 year old in existence.
This version gives me goosebumps evertime
Its great how you use music to connect with your kids. im learning so much from you sir, thank you. i can tell your daughter is paying more attention to the "visual" of the video rather than the music or the artistry of it. she did not connect so much to the "music" than she did to the visual. perhaps use lyric videos? she seems to try to connect to what she is seeing rather than what she is hearing/feeling. what you are doing is fantastic, and important. thank you
Thank you so much, great comment!!!
Bruh she oozing confidence now good job
Your not the only one who smiles at that line. I love that one also. It's a relatable line
It is probably one of my favorite lines in all of music, love it.
Sabaton - Primo Victoria
Epica - Consign to Oblivion live at the Zenith
Both will get that head banging!
"Hello darkness my old friend" sets the mood/tone for the rest of the song.
You must be incredibly grateful for the video record of these moments. Thanks for sharing.
Very well done, and thank you so much for not talking over, what is possibly the greatest cover ever done. Respect. Best review I've watched.
Land Of Confusion is another great cover by Disturbed!
the song is 30+ years old.
still holds 100% true TO THIS DAY.
THIRTY! YEARS! of doing fucking SHIT about it!
@Jeremy Austinwhere did you get that info? This song was long before Genesis. It was written by Paul Simon & FIRST recorded by Simon & Garfunkle.
@@Fostermom4chis Jeremy was referring to Land Of Confusion not The Sound Of Silence!
@@davidpalahinjak2664 :)
No need to do a reaction video in it but Disturbed singing this live on Conan is a MUST SEE. (if you haven't already)
Keep rockin. 😎👍
Sean Keating
My thoughts exactly!
Live with Myles Kennedy is even better IMO
He was sick with a chest cold while taping on Conan...and still managed to pull itboff
I agree...it kicked @$$ on Conan.
I saw that one too....pretty awesome as well.
Beautiful version. She looks stunned. It worked Dad
Hello darkness my old friend was Paul Simon referencing him writing songs in a dark bathroom.
Nice, I did not know that.
true that, everyone thinks it's a reference to depression, but Paul liked the acoustics in the bathroom and took his guitar there to write, and in this particular instance to develop an idea that had remained from a dream. If i understand correctly the rest is a warning about Television (the neon god) but can equally, if not even more so, be applied to the modern technology (internet and social media) of more recent times. Great to see a father and daughter doing something like this together, thumbs up from me :)
Another great song. Looking forward to the reaction later 🤘🏻
Another great reaction and on a roll 🤘🏻
Thanks for the kind words, on occasion I do have to pause though to help avoid copyright, but for the most part I try to limit that. Thanks again!
Las racciones de ella son magníficas porque son muy espontáneas y sinceras. Gran video. Saludos desde Venezuela
YES! Never pause anymore! LOL!
If my 11 year old daughter develops that kind of taste in music, I'll be a happy man. Currently, despite playing guitar in the school rock band, she still prefers pop that's a bit on the mindless side. But hopefully as she gets a little older her tastes will mature.
He went into a room got stoned and sang it like this, then decided he liked it and brought it out.
this has become one of my favorite songs of all time. I have heard the original but am more familiar with disturbed. your point about his point of view of a young kid when he wrote this song completely changed the way that I think about this song. it resonated with me more than any song has in a long time. thank you sir and keep up the good work!
BTW, this video doesn't do this song the justice David does when you see it live. Live it's a spiritual experience.
Yes the live version on Conan is the first time I heard or saw this song by Disturbed...and my first thought was that they were going to trash this great song! Then it was...OMG, I love this version!!! My favorite now👍
wish I would have seen him live, lived my life not following these awesome singers
@@DiyanneLea That performance was hands down the best version he has done....just watching his intensity and the power of his voice unfold....truly moving!!!!
If you do a Cover, make sure you do the original justice....., Disturbed did just that!!!!!
After seeing Diturbed perform this song on Conan, Paul Simon, the creator of the original, reached out and PRAISED the band on doing their song justice. That alone is the greatest reward any band can receive when doing a cover that is so old and beloved by multiple generations.
And some.
Agreed, but I woulD've loved a version with more "disturb" in it. (personnaly)
No! Disturbed just topped the original!
Disturbed surpassed it
I don’t know if anyone else does this but, with my kids, when a remake was released whether in music or movie I would make them watch or listen to the original release first and then they could listen to or watch the new one.
Your daughter might like Disturbed - The Light official video. Really accessible and has a great message.
" I don't know why I laugh!"
Because the Internet ruins everything...
Top 3 favourite songs doesn’t matter who sings it, I choke up during it, it hits home some how. Number 1 song is Hurt sung by the late great Johnny Cash. It hits home too.
When old music is made by newer artists it tends to sound better. I the case of this song Distrubed also made it more emotional.
