Another great Pencil and video Bob, thanks again for sharing your method for a modified mechanical Pencil. That sine wave was a very nice surprise. 😀🇬🇧
Great video Bob. Never thought to do a modified pencil before I saw your video. Cool idea. I have a kit and I fully intend to To give it a try. Thank you Jim
I wish I would have come across this video sooner! I did my second slimline yesterday and hated that I had to cut it for that band in the middle. Can't wait to try the modification. Beautiful pencil btw. :)
I think this might be a good place to just replace those two tubes with a longer one cut to the correct length. Although, what you did worked really well too... That's a really beautiful pencil. Love the full length wood too.

Great video as always Bob. Thanks for taking the time to video your work. I've made a one piece pen, but haven't tried a pencil. I gotta try one now. I'm thinking a matching set :).
Thank you bob for sharing your knowledge. I did as you instructed. Maybe next time wet in a blow the laminate, I did it and it was flexible enough to use a clamp and press them together. Thanks a lot, deeman

Thanks great job. I have a question though. This may seem like a crazy question, but I draw the center on both ends of the blank, but somehow, the end hole is not centered. Is there a way I can center it on my drill press, without putting it on my lathe? I know, when I drill on my lathe, the hole will be centered on both ends. I just wanted to know if I could do it on my drill press. I have it in a vise, so I'm limited as to making it square. Maybe I need to make a jig.

On a slimline pencil tutorial on IAP (by J.Blanchard) it instructs you to turn that pesky middle band between centers in order to shave down the center ridge and make it flush with the stems that fit into the tubes. He then connects the tubes via this middle "band" as per the instructions and the tubes, now connected, act as one long tube. BUT, as I think you demonstrate here, you don't need the tubes connected. They're not even touching inside the turned wood! Excellent! Now I feel a lot better about making my son this pencil. Great to have you as one of the experts in this field. Thanks for the work you put into it. Jake
Are you flipping the pen or are you reversing the pen as you sanded it. What is the reason for that? I like the pen you I think I'm going to make a few of those. Great job!!!!
Hello Dale, I have to flip the blank because my lathe does not have reverse. I like to reverse a blank to sand it because as you cut with the tool, it lays the grain down in one direction. Sanding in the opposite direction stands the grain up and I think gives an overall better appearance. Regards, Bob
+David Gardner Hello David, They are my non stick bushings for C/A finishing. Here's a video I made about them: ua-cam.com/video/KSXlS89qmCM/v-deo.html Regards, Bob
Awesome pencil. I have seen you do a modified kit with the two original tubes and also with a new full-length tube. Are there pros and cons to not using the tubes that come with the kits?

Very nice Bob - I really like that "modified" look, and the blank wasn't to bad either. Most don't realize the work that goes into a segmented blank. Thanks

great video. i am new to turning and have made a few pens so far as well as some spinning tops. very fun projects. want to try this techniquw as i love inlays an such. anyone know where i can get some Olive Wood in or near the Vancouver, BC area?
Another beautiful job! I've loved walnut since I made my first woodshop project in 7th grade, and that is a stunning piece of figured walnut you used. I like the modification and will try it myself. Thanks for all your videos, you've been a great help to us novice pen turners!
Wonderful video, i turned my first pen yesterday, really fun to have a finished project, not perfect but a good start. Question, why do you flip the work when sanding? Thanks a lot for your videos.
+Jennie Spradlin Hello Jennie, I flip the work to sand in the opposite direction because when you cut with a tool, it lays the grain down. Opposite direction lifts it so it can be sanded smoother giving a better finish. Regards, Bob
Another great video! I just turned a pencil today from a beautiful black and white ebony blank and it would be much better without that pesky band in the middle breaking up the grain. My dad and I will have to try the slimline modification sometime! Cheers, Kayley
Thank you Kayley, That band really takes away from the wood. One piece construction lets you show off a beautiful blank. Please do give it a try and send me a photo of what you come up with. Regards, Bob
Yes, sometimes when recording, it’s easy to say the wrong thing regardless of what you mean to say. This was a slip and I’ve had it pointed out to me many times over. The wood was mahogany.
Good you didn't do it like the tut of the IAP. That person's way was to put the center band between a dead and live center and turn the metal down to make a tube coupler that when done the two tubes were touching. This assembly was now glued into the blank. I see this as causing two problems, first the pencil would be a tad short but I think the cap at the end would still cover the eraser, but second you couldn't use a normal pen mandrel since the coupler gets in the way. Only issue I see with this style is that you can't make a traditional "slim" slimline. It could snap in two or get crushed between the tubes.
Hello Cliff, I have purchased some long tubes that I believe I can cut to the proper length and inserted into one single blank. That would let me make the pen slimmer. What are your thoughts on a single tube slimline mechanical pencil? Regards, Bob
The pen turned out great. I've made the modified slimline pen from your earlier video and will definitely do this one as well. How about looking into modified proline click pen kit?
Really great idea, looking to get into turning and really like your informative videos....FYI, not cherry and maple but African Mahogany and quartersawn white oak.
Nice work is there any videos that you would suggest for a person doing this for the first time although I won't be making mechanical pencils I would like to find something that's start to finish step by step I just can't seem to find what I'm looking for I have most of the things I need at least I think I do
I see you get a lot of "requests" for pens. Have you ever put a logo on a pen? I have been approached by a local business for some. Small order therefore not warranting buying a laser engraver. Any ideas?
Testor model transfers. You can buy them at the hobby store and run them through your printer. A couple coats of C/A then apply the transfer. Finish up with a few more coats of C/A. Regards, Bob
+RJBWoodTurner Thanks! Ordered some decal paper yesterday as a trial thing cause I couldn't think of anything else that would work. I guess I was on the right track. Please keep doing what you do! Love watching your videos.
I really appreciate you videos. I've been carving and building things with wood for nearly 50 years. I started out making wooden belt buckles while working for a cabinet maker. Don't stop doing what your doing; excellent work.
I love the pencil but i do have one worry for my own. Since there is a gap between the brass tubes, would this affect the structural integrity of the wood in the center?
I'm glad I subscribed to your channel as you are clear, concise and you have no annoying music! Thanks. I believe your veneers are not cherry and maple, but perhaps South American mahogany and (possibly) hickory. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable viewers than I on species identification. Keep up the great work and I look forward to more videos.
Thank you Karl, You may be correct on the veneers, my mother found them at a garage sale so I don't really have any idea. I don't care to use music in my videos, I love the music my machines make. Regards, Bob
Excellent pencil Bob and the blank came out fantastic. I have been itching to put some new ideas I have had to the test but just can't seem to find the time due to work and grandchildren. Hopefully I might be able to get this weekend off and try some of them. All the best Tony
Thank you Tony, I know what you mean about no time. I have so many ideas and can't seem to find the time either. Best of luck to you and I'd love to see a video from you. Regards, Bob
Hi Bob I'm a new subscriber just getting started in wood turning and pen making. Your videos are very informative and enjoyable. Would you consider a quick tips video on sharpening and maintaining your tools? Thanks Scott
+Hoosierchef70 Hello Scott, Let me put some thought into it. I use the Wolverine sharpening system and that may be a little out of reach for many turners. Thank you for the suggestion. Regards, Bob
That is a fantastic looking pencil. My drillpress wobbles so badly I would never get it centered, but I can drill it on the lathe. I have to make one or two or eight of these!
Thank you Ted, I think drilling these out in the lathe would work very well. I have a chuck for my lathe but it's tied up at the moment as a migshift mandrel. Regards, Bob
Great job Bob. I've been looking for a project to use up some veneer and this looks perfect. A side question for you: Do you buy bushings for each pen kit you buy or use a near enough approach? I've recently made a perfume atomizer (www.axminster.co.uk/perfume-atomiser-spray-kit-ax890768) that required a new set of bushings which makes these one off projects more expensive than I'd like. Any suggestions? Cheers and all the best in your new home. Ben
Hello Ben, I generally buy a set of bushings for each kit style. I usually make quite a number of pens of each style though. I have on occasion used my calipers to size a pen. It works great but is much slower. There are turners who use HDPE and other materials and make their own bushings. Regards, Bob
+Bryn Phipps Thank you Bryn, When you cut the blank with the tool, It lays some of the fibers down in one direction. Rotating the blank lets the paper lift the fibers and remove them. Regards, Bob
Nice pencil! I don't care for the center band either. I've made some two piece slimline pens without a center band. I just make the upper tube a bit longer to account for the width of the center band. I end up turning the two blanks without the center bushing. I have to give the laminations a try, it came out looking very nice.
Great job, Bob, and I think your new shop looks great, After it's fixed up I think you will have hours of fun in it. I know I do mine. Congradulations on your move.
are you positive those veneers were maple and cherry? im almost certain those were oak and mahogany. either way I really liked the end piece, i agree that center ring was very obnoxious. the ones I get from my local supplier are more conservative, not a real flashy design, just your typical straight slimline, much better than the one you were showing I think
You're correct they were mahogany and oak. I don't know where I got cherry and maple from. This was a Trimline pencil kit from Penn State. I'm not sure what they were thinking with that center band. Regards, Bob
Hi Bob, I have to hand it to you, I have followed your turning videos for quite some time now, and in all sincerity I have to say that your videos are the best! You do a real good job of describing everything you are doing, and why you are doing it. You show what needs to be done, and exclude the repetitive stuff. Have you ever thought of teaching night classes at the local schools or clubs? Your standards are certainly good enough. Love your work and the way you do it. I wish you much success, and keep 'em coming. Ed
Thank you Ed, I remember when I first started making videos, I was told over and over not to go into so much detail. I didn't listen and kept making videos like I would want to watch that explained things in a way that would allow me to do out into the shop and duplicate what I saw. The people telling me to cut the time down are long gone and the people who follow me now seem to enjoy the style of videos I do with lots of detail. I'm glad I stuck with doing it my way and now I have a great audience to share with. Thank you for watching. Regards, Bob
Bob, I have a horrible time with Pencil Kits either from PSI or Woodcraft. I love the idea of eliminating the band and measuring the tubes and middle connector to make a solid piece of wood. I will give this a try, You sir, are a wizard! Thank You Jerry
That looks awesome. I've just recently started turning pens, couldn't do it without your great instructional videos. I've watched a bunch of them. Do you have one on how you sharpen your tools? And have you ever tried the carbide tools?
+John Hall Hello John, I haven't made a sharpening video yet but I have had many requests. Hopefully soon. I have a square carbide tool but I only use it for roughing. I prefer HHS tools because it gives a smoother cut. Regards, Bob
This good to learn - I've hesitated to make modifieds for pencils because of the need for the "unscrewing" in the middle, I'll give it a try this weekend, thanks for the lesson.
I've got one of those pencils hiding behind the flap in my pen case so I don't have to see it all the time, did you mention crushed? But, now with new hope! :) Gorgeous piece of work there Robert! - Bill
Thank you Bill, I've had a few returned because they were sat on and bent. Then I have to steal a trim ring from another kit to fix them. Now all those kits can be used to make beautiful, stronger, pencils. Regards, Bob
Super job on the mod. of the pencil. I found if I run the veneer grain the other way the halves press together easier. Keep the great videos coming. Thanks
+Kenneth Legendre Hello Kenneth, Great question. When you turn a blank, instead of cutting all the fibers, sometimes it will lay them over. Reversing the blank lets you sand against the fiber, raise it and smooth it. While sanding, it will lay smaller fibers down in the opposite direction. The reversing allows for a much better finish as it continually raises those fibers and shortens them. I hope this helps. Regards, Bob
+Kenneth Legendre I think once you do, you'll see the difference. As a test, make a slimline and rotate only one of the blanks. That should really let you see how well it works. Regards, Bob
Was just planning to do some very similar blanks to this. Glad I found your video. One thing I have considered trying when I do mine is to cut the veneer with the grain perpendicular to the grain of the blank, or essentially 90 degrees from the way you cut your veneer. That should allow the veneer to very easily curve to match the curvature of the wavy cut. It is much easier to bend the veneer perpendicular to the grain than to bend the grain strands themselves. I'll let you know how they come out.
Would like to point out that your cherry veneer is actually Quartered Sapele. Keep up the great work! your such an inspiration to this new wood turner.
Greetings me a question I'm observer from Germany as possible to send me a company name or details of the pens of ink tools and cylinder Golden and thanks to you
Thanks for the inspiration. I made a couple of long barrel pens as presents for Christmas presents. I like your design and I will make a pencil to show to buddies at work.
Just wanted to thank you for all your videos. Bought my 15 year old son a Rockler lathe for Christmas and we both turned our first pens last week. My second was a slimline that I did as a modified one piece like this pencil. I have another one piece blank to turn tomorrow. I am working my way up to an olive wood pen and pencil set doing this method and using the slimline kits. Mine will be the brushed chrome or satin chrome. I have a fountain pen kit on the way. It is so addictive, my son is already on acrylic blanks. Anyway, thanks again, your videos have been our main instruction. You certainly are the pen guy, looking forward to where you go next. Oh, congrats on the new house and shop too.
I've been watching a number of your videos - outstanding quality and creativity. On top of that, you're a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely...
Great idea to eliminate the center ring. I think I would draw lines each side of center to keep the veneer in the blank. Congrats on the new shop, did I miss the tour?
Hello Bill, I thought about drawing lines but I wasn't sure just how fat the pencil would be. I just kept tight to the center line and thank goodness it worked out. I did a shop update a while back, the address is: ua-cam.com/video/nKdE4IrsiA0/v-deo.html I'll do another once I have everything cleaned up. Right now, it's a mess. I unboxed everything and now I need to finish putting it away. Only problem is the lathe keeps calling me and I'm not getting my work done. :^) Regards, Bob
When a friend says "whatever you come up with", that means he trusts in your creativeness. Now you have a new suscriber, Bob. Greatings from Chile (South America).
I like the way you configure the pen and Pencil to eliminate the center piece. I prefer single tube designs but I like the simplicity and the cost of a slim line
+Daniel Edwards Slim lines are great, I always keep them around so when people come to the shop, and are interested in turning, I have something inexpensive to learn on and they can take home with them. I really Like the one piece design because it's all about the blank. Regards, Bob

Very nice pencil. I learn something new every video you make. Where would I find the plastic bushings you use when you apply your ca finish? Thank you
Hello,
I make them from 3/4" HDPE or UHMW rods I buy off Ebay. The rods are really cheap too.

great video. i am new to turning and have made a few pens so far as well as some spinning tops. very fun projects. want to try this techniquw as i love inlays an such. anyone know where i can get some Olive Wood in or near the Vancouver, BC area?
Thank you Marney,
I get my Olivewood from www.pennstateind.com. I don't know if they ship to Vancover, BC but you might ask them .
Regards,
Bob
+RJBWoodTurner pennstate ind ok great thanks i will check it out, good to know
Good job - except - need more light for assembly process.
Thank you Richard,
I have corrected the lighting issue in my shop.
Regards,
Bob
Another beautiful job! I've loved walnut since I made my first woodshop project in 7th grade, and that is a stunning piece of figured walnut you used. I like the modification and will try it myself. Thanks for all your videos, you've been a great help to us novice pen turners!
Thank you,
I'm glad you like the video and the pen.
Regards,
Bob
Cigar smoke im in 7th grade now and am building my first cutting board for my mom with my grampa out of walnut and maple its beautiful wood
That was oak and mahogany in the insert, not maple and cherry.
Thank you.
A beautiful looking pen bob, thanks for explaining your technique, me thinks it will be copied by many.
Take care
Mike
Thank you Mike,
I hope your right. Best of luck with your Woodturning show, I hope it's a brilliant success.
Regards,
Bob
Wonderful video, i turned my first pen yesterday, really fun to have a finished project, not perfect but a good start. Question, why do you flip the work when sanding? Thanks a lot for your videos.
+Jennie Spradlin Hello Jennie,
I flip the work to sand in the opposite direction because when you cut with a tool, it lays the grain down. Opposite direction lifts it so it can be sanded smoother giving a better finish.
Regards,
Bob
Another great video! I just turned a pencil today from a beautiful black and white ebony blank and it would be much better without that pesky band in the middle breaking up the grain. My dad and I will have to try the slimline modification sometime!
Cheers,
Kayley
Thank you Kayley,
That band really takes away from the wood. One piece construction lets you show off a beautiful blank. Please do give it a try and send me a photo of what you come up with.
Regards,
Bob
beautiful pen but isnt that cherry actually mahogany?
Hello Cliff,
I have purchased some long tubes that I believe I can cut to the proper length and inserted into one single blank. That would let me make the pen slimmer.
What are your thoughts on a single tube slimline mechanical pencil?
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner Should work. I haven't made a pencil yet but I have one on my workbench. Just looks for the right blank.
The right blank is a quest I'm always on. It's never ending.
Regards,
Bob
As always, really enjoy your videos Bob. Very nice job on the pencil. Great way to get rid of those pesky center bands. Glad to have you back.
Thank you Joe,
It's great to be back.
Regards,
Bob
The pen turned out great. I've made the modified slimline pen from your earlier video and will definitely do this one as well. How about looking into modified proline click pen kit?
Help Eric,
I've never heard of the Proline. Where can I get my hands on one?
+RJBWoodTurner sorry, Slimline Pro. I picked mine up from Rockler. I'm not sure if the center band can be removed because of how it assembles.
I haven't seen that pen before.
Regards,
Bob
Really great idea, looking to get into turning and really like your informative videos....FYI, not cherry and maple but African Mahogany and quartersawn white oak.
+kevin scruggs LOL,
I had that pointed out to me right after I posted the video, not sure where I got cherry and maple from.
Regards,
Bob
Nice work is there any videos that you would suggest for a person doing this for the first time although I won't be making mechanical pencils I would like to find something that's start to finish step by step I just can't seem to find what I'm looking for I have most of the things I need at least I think I do
Here’s a playlist of some videos, maybe they will help you.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner Where is the play list you are referring to I didn't see it
Modified Pens & Mechanical Pencils

I see you get a lot of "requests" for pens. Have you ever put a logo on a pen? I have been approached by a local business for some. Small order therefore not warranting buying a laser engraver. Any ideas?
Testor model transfers. You can buy them at the hobby store and run them through your printer. A couple coats of C/A then apply the transfer. Finish up with a few more coats of C/A.
Regards,
Bob
+RJBWoodTurner Thanks! Ordered some decal paper yesterday as a trial thing cause I couldn't think of anything else that would work. I guess I was on the right track. Please keep doing what you do! Love watching your videos.
Thank you,
Best of luck with the decals, I've seen some really nice pens done that way.
Regards,
Bob
I really appreciate you videos. I've been carving and building things with wood for nearly 50 years. I started out making wooden belt buckles while working for a cabinet maker. Don't stop doing what your doing; excellent work.
Thank you Tarry,
I appreciate the encouragement, that's what keeps me going.
Regards,
Bob
That looks like a good idea and I will have to try it. thanks.
Thank you Gerald,
I had a blast making it. It's good to be settled and to have a working shop again.
Regards,
Bob
Very nice. Can't wait to see what else you can do with the veneer.
Thank you Adrian,
I have ideas, now to test them out. :^)

Bob
Great looking piece Bob. Enjoy the new shop. JimE
Thank you Jim,
I really hope to set this shop up right.
Regards,
Bob
I love the pencil but i do have one worry for my own. Since there is a gap between the brass tubes, would this affect the structural integrity of the wood in the center?
So far I haven’t had an issue. Lately I’ve been using 10” tubes and cutting them to a 4.25”. That gives a solid tube all way through.
RJBWoodTurner that is a good idea, I'll have to find a good source for mine
RJBWoodTurner how do you cut the tubes to length
Thanks for the video!
That is a fantastic pencil. I like the technique of eliminating that gaudy center band.
Thank you Matthew.

Bob
I'm glad I subscribed to your channel as you are clear, concise and you have no annoying music! Thanks.
I believe your veneers are not cherry and maple, but perhaps South American mahogany and (possibly) hickory. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable viewers than I on species identification.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to more videos.
Thank you Karl,
You may be correct on the veneers, my mother found them at a garage sale so I don't really have any idea.
I don't care to use music in my videos, I love the music my machines make.
Regards,
Bob
You are correct on the Mahogany veneer but I'm 99% sure the lighter one is oak which has large pores like the lighter wood used here.
Looks great Bob. Well done.
Thank you J.D.
Regards,
Bob
Great job definitely going to try this
Thank you Mark.

Thx for sharing, another success.
Thank you Gary.

Excellent pencil Bob and the blank came out fantastic. I have been itching to put some new ideas I have had to the test but just can't seem to find the time due to work and grandchildren.
Hopefully I might be able to get this weekend off and try some of them.
All the best
Tony
Thank you Tony,
I know what you mean about no time. I have so many ideas and can't seem to find the time either. Best of luck to you and I'd love to see a video from you.

Hi Bob
I'm a new subscriber just getting started in wood turning and pen making. Your videos are very informative and enjoyable. Would you consider a quick tips video on sharpening and maintaining your tools?
Thanks
Scott
+Hoosierchef70 Hello Scott,
Let me put some thought into it. I use the Wolverine sharpening system and that may be a little out of reach for many turners. Thank you for the suggestion.
Regards,
Bob
That is a fantastic looking pencil. My drillpress wobbles so badly I would never get it centered, but I can drill it on the lathe. I have to make one or two or eight of these!
Thank you Ted,
I think drilling these out in the lathe would work very well. I have a chuck for my lathe but it's tied up at the moment as a migshift mandrel.
Regards,
Bob
Great job Bob.
I've been looking for a project to use up some veneer and this looks perfect.
A side question for you: Do you buy bushings for each pen kit you buy or use a near enough approach? I've recently made a perfume atomizer (www.axminster.co.uk/perfume-atomiser-spray-kit-ax890768) that required a new set of bushings which makes these one off projects more expensive than I'd like. Any suggestions?
Cheers and all the best in your new home.
Ben
Hello Ben,
I generally buy a set of bushings for each kit style. I usually make quite a number of pens of each style though. I have on occasion used my calipers to size a pen. It works great but is much slower. There are turners who use HDPE and other materials and make their own bushings.
Regards,
Bob
Maple and Cherry? Isn't this Oak and Mahogany?
Hello Oliver,
Yes it was.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks! Had not seen any mention of it and started to question my knowledge of wood :)
Really nice pencil! what was the reason for switching the blank between each grit? thanks
Bryn.
+Bryn Phipps Thank you Bryn,
When you cut the blank with the tool,
It lays some of the fibers down in one direction. Rotating the blank lets the paper lift the fibers and remove them.
Regards,
Bob
Ok that's very interesting thanks for the info. 👍 can't weight for your next video.
+Bryn Phipps Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Bob you can use methylated sprits to stand up the grain, when dry sand with vey fine steel wool
very nice like everytime thanks a lot
+St-Germain Réal Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
that is not cherry. it's mahogany
Thank you.
Nice pencil! I don't care for the center band either. I've made some two piece slimline pens without a center band. I just make the upper tube a bit longer to account for the width of the center band. I end up turning the two blanks without the center bushing. I have to give the laminations a try, it came out looking very nice.
Thank you,
Great idea for eliminating the center band on a Slimline. I prefer to show off a beautiful blank.
Regards,
Bob
Great job, Bob, and I think your new shop looks great, After it's fixed up I think you will have hours of fun in it. I know I do mine. Congradulations on your move.
Thank you Jerry,
I know your right and I'm looking forward to every one of those hours.
Regards,
Bob
are you positive those veneers were maple and cherry? im almost certain those were oak and mahogany. either way I really liked the end piece, i agree that center ring was very obnoxious. the ones I get from my local supplier are more conservative, not a real flashy design, just your typical straight slimline, much better than the one you were showing I think
You're correct they were mahogany and oak. I don't know where I got cherry and maple from.
This was a Trimline pencil kit from Penn State. I'm not sure what they were thinking with that center band.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, I have to hand it to you, I have followed your turning videos for quite some time now, and in all sincerity I have to say that your videos are the best! You do a real good job of describing everything you are doing, and why you are doing it. You show what needs to be done, and exclude the repetitive stuff. Have you ever thought of teaching night classes at the local schools or clubs? Your standards are certainly good enough. Love your work and the way you do it. I wish you much success, and keep 'em coming. Ed
Thank you Ed,
I remember when I first started making videos, I was told over and over not to go into so much detail.
Regards,
Bob
Bob, I have a horrible time with Pencil Kits either from PSI or Woodcraft. I love the idea of eliminating the band and measuring the tubes and middle connector to make a solid piece of wood. I will give this a try, You sir, are a wizard! Thank You
Jerry
+Jerry Dionisio Thank you Jerry.
Regards,
Bob
That looks awesome. I've just recently started turning pens, couldn't do it without your great instructional videos. I've watched a bunch of them. Do you have one on how you sharpen your tools? And have you ever tried the carbide tools?
+John Hall Hello John,
I haven't made a sharpening video yet but I have had many requests. Hopefully soon.
I have a square carbide tool but I only use it for roughing. I prefer HHS tools because it gives a smoother cut.
Regards,
Bob
This good to learn - I've hesitated to make modifieds for pencils because of the need for the "unscrewing" in the middle, I'll give it a try this weekend, thanks for the lesson.
+Dave Roush Thank you Dave.
Regards,
Bob
Beautiful mechanical pencil. Your videos are worth waiting for.
Thank you very much Scott.

Bob
I make a lot of mechanical pencils, but haver never made a segmented like this. I will give it a try. What great work you do.
Thank you Dennis.
Regards,
Bob
I've got one of those pencils hiding behind the flap in my pen case so I don't have to see it all the time, did you mention crushed? But, now with new hope! :) Gorgeous piece of work there Robert!
- Bill
Thank you Bill,
I've had a few returned because they were sat on and bent. Then I have to steal a trim ring from another kit to fix them. Now all those kits can be used to make beautiful, stronger, pencils.
Regards,
Bob
Where did you find the veneers?
I believe I purchased some of them from Woodcraft. I also found some at a garage sale.
Regards,
Bob
Super job on the mod. of the pencil. I found if I run the veneer grain the other way the halves press together easier. Keep the great videos coming. Thanks
+s66fastback Great tip, I'll try that.
Regards,
Bob
Why do you switch the pen during each grit for sanding?
Great pencil (or is it a pen). :)
+Kenneth Legendre Hello Kenneth,
Great question.
Regards,
Bob
+RJBWoodTurner Thanks. makes sense. I'll have to try that.
+Kenneth Legendre I think once you do, you'll see the difference. As a test, make a slimline and rotate only one of the blanks. That should really let you see how well it works.
Regards,
Bob
+RJBWoodTurner I've watched a bunch of your videos and I don't remember ever hearing it. I'll give it a try on my next pen.
+Kenneth Legendre Please let me know how it works out for you. Im always interested in what other turners learn.
Regards,
Bob
Was just planning to do some very similar blanks to this. Glad I found your video. One thing I have considered trying when I do mine is to cut the veneer with the grain perpendicular to the grain of the blank, or essentially 90 degrees from the way you cut your veneer. That should allow the veneer to very easily curve to match the curvature of the wavy cut. It is much easier to bend the veneer perpendicular to the grain than to bend the grain strands themselves. I'll let you know how they come out.
+Andrew Grover Thank you Andrew,
I need to start making my own veneers, the stuff I have was from Woodcraft and it very old.
Regards,
Bob
Would like to point out that your cherry veneer is actually Quartered Sapele. Keep up the great work! your such an inspiration to this new wood turner.
Thank you Wesley.

Bob
Hey Bob, I'm having a heck of a time finding veneer sheets. All I can find is edge banding. Where do you get yours?
+jwestskate1 I got it at a yard sale but the package said Peach Tree Woodworking.

Thank you Woody,
It's nice to meet you.

Thanks for the inspiration. I made a couple of long barrel pens as presents for Christmas presents. I like your design and I will make a pencil to show to buddies at work.
Thank you Lynn,
I'm glad you like my videos. I'll bet the recipients loved your pens.

Thank you,
If I can be of any help to you or your son, my email address is: rjbwoodturner@ufoww.com.

I've been watching a number of your videos - outstanding quality and creativity. On top of that, you're a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely...
Thank you Joseph,
I appreciate your comment and I'm happy that you find my videos useful.

Great idea to eliminate the center ring. I think I would draw lines each side of center to keep the veneer in the blank. Congrats on the new shop, did I miss the tour?
Hello Bill,
I thought about drawing lines but I wasn't sure just how fat the pencil would be. I just kept tight to the center line and thank goodness it worked out.
I did a shop update a while back, the address is:
ua-cam.com/video/nKdE4IrsiA0/v-deo.html
I'll do another once I have everything cleaned up. Right now, it's a mess. I unboxed everything and now I need to finish putting it away. Only problem is the lathe keeps calling me and I'm not getting my work done. :^)
Regards,
Bob
When a friend says "whatever you come up with", that means he trusts in your creativeness.
Now you have a new suscriber, Bob. Greatings from Chile (South America).
Welcome and thank you Jorge.

Bob
I like the way you configure the pen and Pencil to eliminate the center piece. I prefer single tube designs but I like the simplicity and the cost of a slim line
+Daniel Edwards Slim lines are great, I always keep them around so when people come to the shop, and are interested in turning, I have something inexpensive to learn on and they can take home with them.
I really
Like the one piece design because it's all about the blank.

Bob
GREAT job ! As usual you explained each step clearly and concisely .
You make it look easy . Keep up the great work , you inspire me !
