I disagree with asking hair stylists for advice when you’re older. Every stylist I have visited has always wanted to cut my hair really short. In my opinion, short hair can make many people look older, while longer hair tends to make the face appear younger. Additionally, I have curly hair, and when it’s longer, it is easier to care for because it pulls down the curls. Hair stylists often suggest cutting hair short, even if it doesn’t suit a person’s age or face shape.

I agree with you 💯 percent. I'm 37 and I will be 38 on November 19 and hair stylists always want to cut my hair very short. I like my hair to be shoulder length..

My Grandma was a beautician. It's important to go somewhere where the entire crew does a better cut and style. I try to pick someone that has my hair type, or is a senior stylist I usually find that these types of people will cut my thick wavy to curly hair best. Then as I am sitting there I watch and take note of other stylists because sometimes you can find a good stylist by watching. I feel like my method is less risky and I walk away happy. I also like to pick styles that fit my face shape and I bring in pictures from Pinterest or screen shots from my phone. While my hair is thicker, its not going ever look exactly like the picture it helps.

And I agree this super short styles do age people. I feel like people from the 80' and 90's look older than today just because of how hair was cut and styled.

I actually embraced my grey hair many years ago. I am 64 years young and I have long silver curls that I get so many compliments on. I am experiencing some thinning of my hair and have been using Rogaine 5%, the men’s version as I refuse to pay the “pink tax” on the women’s version. I have also incorporated the Viviscal Shampoo and conditioner and my hair has been filling in and now looks fuller and thicker.

@@eliseraifman4766 I always wanted to be a long grey hair lady when I'm older! It turns out I started greying at 25 😅 31 now and I have noticeable grey hair when I put my hair up. People find it weird, but I'm sticking to what I've decided. I don't like it yet, and I'm trying to delay it, but if I start coloring it will be much harder to go back to natural hair color, and I'll spend lots of money and time. So, let's just let the hair grey out in peace 😁

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It's hard seeing my aging mom in her 70's get thin hair so much so she looked like she was undergoing chemo when it got wet. Ran to the drugstore and got minoxidil. I wasn't sure it will work for aging hair but we're giving it a shot. 6 months later I think it's helping. Plus she's on HRT.

Hi Doctor Ellis. First, I love your content! Second, I have a request. Is it possible that you could do a series or even a single long-form video about how to treat your skin, nails, hair, etc. to heal the after effects of cancer treatments? My mom is a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, and cancer stole not just her breasts, but her healthy skin, her red hair (it lost all of its pigment during treatment), her healthy nails, and even her teeth (which I know is not something you can help with). Her skin is constantly dried out. Some of her toenails fell off during treatment. They have since grown back, but have become more brittle. Her hair is struggling as well with dryness. For extra context in case it helps, she is in her late 60s and lives in the southeastern US, so she lives in a warm and humid climate. She's been cancer-free for around 5 years, give or take, but this is still a struggle.
I'm not certain this is something you could help with in its entirety due to you not being an oncologist, but I would imagine you could offer some help with this because the skin itself is your specialty and I'm sure you've seen many a cancer survivor who has had skin struggles after treatment.
Thank you! I'm so glad I found your channel a few weeks ago!

@eileengreenspan730 It's specifically the Virtue Flourish line that I've been using, for nearly 6 months now. I'm applying the 5% Minoxidil at night and also spraying their Density Booster spray in certain parts of my hair where I need more follicle stimulation. I never miss not 1 day, and my hair has gotten more dense and much fluffier!! It's a bit of an expense, but I'm committed because I'm seeing results. They are quality products, you can feel it.

Dear Dr Sam, if you read this, and have time, I would be most grateful if you could answer a questions please?
Do you think that it is safe to put an eyelash growth (non hormone) enhancer on ones temples please? I have been doing it and there is some growth in my receding area.
I have been watching a UA-camr called Lab Muffin (she is a chemist) and she recommended hair care that has a high concentration of amodimethicone. I cannot believe the improvement in my hair since I have done this. I have thin, fine, wavy, dyed post menopausal hair that constantly knotted. Not any more, my hair is like silk now and not weighted down. Paul Mitchell does a leave in called Super Strong and Keratase has an excellent range too.
My budget is tight but I'm going to see a dermatologist about my hair loss and thank you for always suggesting this. I think your advice is so helpful and you come across as such a funny, warm and normal person.

My niece is my stylist…she’s 28. I am 57 and have long hair. I ask her at every appointment about going with a short or shorter cut and she says “No”. She tells me it’s healthy and rarely even needs a trim. Believe me-she would tell me! So until she does, I’m keeping my long hair. My husband likes it long too, so I’m not cutting it anytime soon. I use Kenra Triple Repair Bonding shampoo and conditioner along with the Triple Repair Split End Mending Serum. I also add in a Keratin spray and the WOW Dreamcoat. I only wash once a week. I have naturally curly hair that I straighten. I use IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray as my heat protectant when I use my straightening iron. I also use Moroccanoil Hydrating Cream after blow drying and as needed during to tame any frizzies. It sounds like a lot, and I do dread the Sunday wash and dry- mostly because of the drying, but it’s only once a week, so for now I am overall happy with my hair and my routine.

Wow this is right on time for me. I just turned 57 but was informed at age 45 that I had aging hai but started my natural hair journey 14 years ago by eliminating chemicals in my hair to straightening it and using sulfate free shampoo by using Aveda products only. As time progressed I discovered Nutrafol products that included women’s balance for women going through menopause, the hair inhibitor to block DHT and one for stress and after several months I began to have success with hair growth and thickness but changing my diet and elevating the stress in my life was a huge factor as well, sot thank you Dr. Ellis for having this conversation.

I have always had really thick wavy to curly hair and honestly it feels like apart of my identity. I don't dye it and I let it dry on its own. Rarely do I ever pull out a hair dryer. I want to keep up its good health. I have tried some of the virtue products. They smell so lovely and work well. I use Vegamour gray delay vitamins, I swear by those, I started this when I saw some white hair. I also use the Vegamour Ageless shampoo with keratin. Recently I discovered Ceremonia, I had the Guava samples and oh my Goodness that stuff smells amazing! I was getting all kind of compliments on what is that smell? People couldn't believe it was shampoo. Between the wonderful smell and hearing that it offers some sun protection I was sold.

Dermatologist do not know anything about hair loss or shedding. Only want to give drugs. And never spent any time to find out the real problem. They Never suggest blood test, or vitamins. When I stopped putting color in my hair it grew more healthy and grew.
Chemicals are so bad. Changed shampoo with no chemicals added more protein and micro nutrients, never use heat for drying.
I do have curly hair that can hide a lot on style problems and drying. Also watch build up of styling products plugging up follicles and everyday washing.
Washing everyday gets rid of good oils scalp is producing. I went to Naturopath for blood test and she started giving me biotin
Shots. What a difference. Everyone’s chemistry and how the body processing vitamins And food is different. It’s a process.
When you are 30 yrs. Vs. 70 yrs. It’s a different ball game. Good luck ladies.

Derma e has a hair oil that's supposed to be good. And yes a lot of people go blonde when they get older because they've been told to go lighter but at least one stylist has said they just mean bumping up maybe one tone from your natural hair color. Wigs are good these days and your hair stylist can style them for you.

9:28 I wonder if that perception only happens to women...did the study include men? I think that society perception comes from the fact that the majority of women color their hair until their old age (or even until they die), so of course we will associate greying women with old age! But we don't think a greying man is That old.
So.... if less women color their hair, the perception will slowly change, especially if paired with a all around youthful lifestyle
