A riff in 13/4 that sounds natural. This was the best era of Tull. Glascock, Palmer, Barrie Barlow… stunning writing and arranging, Ian’s voice still in its prime.
I saw them in 1978 in Boston garden. I then saw them 45 years later this past October in Hampton Beach New Hampshire with his new band! He still Ian Anderson is still unbelievable although he could not move around the stage like he did 45 years ago. Still a great show!
@@bengal3665I saw. Tull at Hampton Beach in 1970. 6bucks a ticket. Almost a riot when several hundred people tried to get in without tickets to the tiny venue. Yes opened for them . Amazing show. Unforgettable
I like Ian's newest a lot better than the pastoral albums. People who push new or newer Tull aside for the old classics just have a closed mind, and maybe ears too.
Definitely. Bonham said Barrie Barlow was the " finest drummer England produced in recent years". Blackmore said Glascock was the best bass player. Then you have Evan, Palmer, and Barre.
I discovered Songs from the Wood in about 1980 in my brother's tape collection. I was captivated. That summer, I played it endlessly. The countryside was lush and verdant. Washed with summer rain I just wanted to forget school and go live in a tree. It remains my favorite Tull album. Happy days!
I just saw Jethro Tull I probably mentioned it earlier last october. He's now 76. The last time I seen him was 45 years ago when I was I don't know 16 maybe at the Boston Garden in Massachusetts that's where I'm from I love songs from the wood . That's how I got into him from that album and I love that album one of the very very best❤
Everything about this exquisite composition and performance is head and shoulders above everything today's spoonfed generation have the unfortunate pleasure of seeing and hearing!
This specific performance of this song, as included in the '20 Years of Jethro Tull' box set (which I first heard when I got that set as a Christmas present in 1988), is my single favorite piece of music I've ever heard in my life. For me it's the apex of everything I love in music, and has remained fascinating and inspirational to me to this day. Thank you.
I, too, was gifted that box set. Music and performance arts took on a whole new meaning at that moment. To this day, this performance, nothing has come close.
Your a lucky man Art. I was 10 in 1971 my first concert was four years later 1975. Allman Brothers -Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Twas a great show and I got high. How could you not like that?
Jethro Tull is up there with the giants. They will never get old or out of fashion. On the contrary. And Ian is one of the great ones. His musical genius will live on for many generations to come.
For more than 40 bleeping years, just about every time I see something growing up through a crack in the concrete I hear the words, "well I don't think so, I saw some grass growing through the pavement today."
WHAT!? This whole band is just ridiculously multi-talented. Though they have two keyboardists on stage, this song needs four, so the drummer ends up playing xylophone (with his drum mallets!) while the guitarist on a marimba (and hand cymbals). Then of course, Ian whips out the flute and the bassist throws in the harmonies. Wild, richly layered, profoundly beautiful music.
Ever since I first heard this rendition of Velvet Green, tucked away on 1988's 20 Years of Jethro Tull box set, this has been one of my favourite tracks of theirs. Many years later, with the advancement of the internet and UA-cam, I was overjoyed to be able to see the live perfomance and not only hear it. Now, 35 years later, I still believe this to be one of Tull's finest live achievements (as is all of the Sight And Sound In Concert playlist), the studio version paling in comparison, with Ian's vocals at their melodic best (rather than the over-raspiness prevalent on SFTW). Thanks for an official release of the footage!
Never knew it required a special drum kit for this song. Absolutely worth the bother 👌 Always been a favorite. I imagine if they performed Hunting Girl live they would bring a real whip too 😂
True - he arranged horns on their first album "This Was," and contributed all the great string arrangements on their many records through "Stormwatch" in 1979.
This is what it's all about! I've never seen a lead singer play a complex fingering sequence whilst singing before. Usually they sing and then bother multiple frets, or vicey-versey, but it's usually a bridge too far for them to practice both together.
So nice, very nice indeed. This performance is making for a more ' Green' St.Patricks'. Fan since 1970,wow. We just found the '40th' Country set,for ' Songs from le Wood:- can't wait to enjoy! Peace, wellness your way ,H.jr.
A high water mark for an ensemble which has many outstanding achievements. Gratifying to see everyone in good disposition. Barrie Barlow, amazing talent.
We held this group aside as a special treat from the Philadelphia DJ’s . WMMR kept us going while we finished our volumes of homework. They didn’t over play Jethro Tull. I remember the deep tracks were very great easter eggs. For me, a kid who was not aware of what an Anglophile would possibly be… yet intense on anything British… some people on this earth got to see Jethro Tull AND The Who… on the same day! Wow!
Have this album and Aqualung, best era for Jethro Tull! Saw them in concert at the then Capital Center in Largo, Maryland back in late 1977. One of the best concerts I’ve been to.

So very rude 😂😂😂😂😂
The only way we’ll ever see music like this again is if the world collapses and we start rebuilding it
I like Ian's newest a lot better than the pastoral albums. People who push new or newer Tull aside for the old classics just have a closed mind, and maybe ears too.
Unquestionably the best Tull line-up!
This is one of the best line-ups. That is for sure.
Definitly the best👌
Definitely. Bonham said Barrie Barlow was the " finest drummer England produced in recent years". Blackmore said Glascock was the best bass player. Then you have Evan, Palmer, and Barre.
Love Velvet Green and everything on Songs from the Wood.
Definitely my favorite line up.
Always Portrayed Oldness. Hard to believe he was only 30 here. I agree the best line-up
during this period. Favourite song from the Album.
And wildness
3rd may 2024 at sheffield city hall, cant wait
Please tell us about it!!!(or ME) Simon!I'm in Louisiana and couldn't make it!
Genius genius genius i played the album on the car on my award winning system agaon for the thousandth time since 77 the music is so...damm..good
JETHRO TULL is straight out of the 13th century.
And the 12th and the 11th...
And the 21st lol
With this song they shed their American blues influence completely. Fantastic music, this.
One of the most unique and underrated concerts I have ever attended
I have seen around 100 concerts dating back to the early 70's. 1978 - Jethro Tull with Uriah Heep as opener was my very favorite.
Alionor d'Aquitaine would enjoy This music ❤
Barrimore Barlow is awesome. Love Jethro tull, amazing band.one of my favourite tull songs.
I discovered Songs from the Wood in about 1980 in my brother's tape collection. I was captivated. That summer, I played it endlessly. The countryside was lush and verdant. Washed with summer rain I just wanted to forget school and go live in a tree. It remains my favorite Tull album. Happy days!
I discovered in 1978 in me too played it endlessly! Ian Anderson undoubtedly is a genius in a great flautist!
I did what you wished for.hated school.did me no end of good.

It’s not him it’s they Jethro Tull is a band not just Ian Anderson.
Prog Rock at its finest! 💚💚💚 Jethro Tull is Magic ✨🎶✨
Seduction poetry at its finest!
A perfect song for a spring equinox! THNKYOU JETHRO TULL, and God Bless You All.❤
Love Tull, like hearing all the minstrels from the middle ages rolled up into one! 🎶❤️
Who doesn't love Ian Anderson? What a unique talent! I bought a flute years ago. I still have it. I'm no Ian, but it's fun to play.
Same here
No group like Jethro Tull . One of the Best Fusion groups of all time
Everything about this exquisite composition and performance is head and shoulders above everything today's spoonfed generation have the unfortunate pleasure of seeing and hearing!
Oh yes very well said I love it.... They know nothing of good music except a few lucky young people
This is one of my favorite examples of how good they were. I really love his singing in this. So good.
An instant gateway to the beautiful and magical land of pure musical Narnia ....
The whole album Songs From The Woods, transports you to Narnia or the Renaissance Fair.
Magnificent! 🎉🔥
...spring & jethro Tull,,,...a welcome Guest here,,,..signal the snow drops,.....it's time to grow !!!!!😮😮😮❤
Happy Vernal Equinox to you, one and all.
i got this album on 8 track in 1980 for christmas....i can only think winter when i hear s.f.t.w. now....
I Remember the first time I heard this tune [many years ago) and it was magic then and still is, after hearing it hundreds of times!
My man Martin Barre playing everything exepct guitar in this track!
Awesome 🎉🎉
Love Tull. This song is so good ... and the lyrics are filled with sexual innuendo. "Won't you have my company? Take it in your hand" Delightful.
Wow I'm 17 and I love it so much!!! ❤️
So happy youth is discovering this amazing music! What do find interesting about it?!
Very awesome man! I was 17 when this came out lol. This and Pink Floyd Animals came out in 77 and I wore out both albums. I still have those albums.
@@shadofaxes but do you still have Shadowfax?

Good man - good taste
How can one man have so much musical talent?
Because the other five members with so much musical talent make it look that way. But without those people around, it won't be the same.

Speakin' for me too there bro fascinating and inspirational well put
I'm been mad about that song since '79-well met good fellow!
Hmmm, loved tull back in the day but this would be far from my favorite. Each their own.✌️
UNbelievable sound
I, too, was gifted that box set. Music and performance arts took on a whole new meaning at that moment. To this day, this performance, nothing has come close.
Jethro Tull the Best Classic rock 🎼🎵🎸👍.
Superb!
Saw Tull in Rome in 1971. One of the best concerts I've ever seen iN my life. Thank you Ian. Art Johnston from Connecticut.
Your a lucky man Art. I was 10 in 1971 my first concert was four years later 1975. Allman Brothers -Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Twas a great show and I got high. How could you not like that?
complete genius, cant believe was 1977 ...how time has flown..and not for the better
Magic. That was pure magic!
One of the most underrated songs of all time. 😊
LOVE EVERYTHING THIS MASTER ❤ DOES ❤❤❤
Still sounds amazing.
Jethro Tull is up there with the giants. They will never get old or out of fashion. On the contrary. And Ian is one of the great ones. His musical genius will live on for many generations to come.
Songs From The Wood. I still have that album. I'll have to break it out and give it a spin!
In its prime, Tull was untouchable
I miss these shows. The best touring band.
Best year of Jethro Tull.
That’s music
Some of the finest drumming you will hear.
My brother thought he was a great drummer - he couldn't drum to this - and mocked it.
Couldn’t even imagine if someone would try to promote this today. Heads would explode 🤯 not knowing what to do with it….
😅
The first JT song I ever heard. Someone played it for me whilst we were walking on velvet green in 1979.
These were the days when everything was possible!
Most lovely, indeed !!!!!
Gonna get high and listen to Jethro Tull.
Only one of those is a first. I can't even wrap my head around the times! Absolutely spectacular!
For more than 40 bleeping years, just about every time I see something growing up through a crack in the concrete I hear the words, "well I don't think so, I saw some grass growing through the pavement today."
what a great tune !
Výjimečný talent, výjimečná kapela. Díky, že jste.
Outstanding, fantastic presentation... The best!

Saw them play this live with Ian about 3 feet from me in a standing only venue in Denver. Unforgettable!!
One of their best numbers,❤what a genius
GOAT, Thanks Ian Anderson
I loved this performance, this song the first time I listened to it and this magical album!
So glad to be able to share your amazing music with my sons now! So intricate! Wonderful

My favorite song of the great Songs from the wood album and of their best songs period.
Jethro Tull... always wonderful band.
A stunning rendition of 'Velvet Green,' a brilliant musical and indeed a libretto piece in my view.
One of my favourite Tull songs
Never knew it required a special drum kit for this song. Absolutely worth the bother 👌 Always been a favorite.
I imagine if they performed Hunting Girl live they would bring a real whip too 😂
Ahhhhhhh....a rare gem on UA-cam..😊
Velvet Green was and still is my favorite Jethro Tull song.
Saw him in Nashville Tennessee in the 1970s doing this music good show.
Him ?
Him ?
@@AD65 Yeah Jethro Tull.
Saw this show ...anaheim convention Center ....my 2Nd concert after. Yes😊😊😊
David Palmer was the "Secret Weapon" of the best Tull years. Even before joining the band lineup, he was making arrangement for JT.
True - he arranged horns on their first album "This Was," and contributed all the great string arrangements on their many records through "Stormwatch" in 1979.

Favorite song❤
The original Tull was the best line up IMHO 😎🎶
With mick Abrahams? I don't think it's even a subjective topic, 77-79 might be the most talented band in rock history
Original band was no slouch.
Ancient amazing music🎉
Fantastic ✨
Love David’s harpsichord playing!!!
Thanks for this.
Superb - excellent sound ! About the time I (a year a two before) I enjoyed my first Tull concert, and seen most tours since - outstanding
That flute is mind blowing
Although there are almost too many to count, this song (and LP) is one of my favorites Mr. Anderson. *THANK YOU!*
They were always great live. Superlative.
