You said it, Sister! 👍 NTM the quality is almost always better… like WAY better. So, technically you’re really not spending more money. You’re just spending more money at first. But, with this instant gratification generation, they don’t see it that way. That’s why this country is dead, and the only way to resurrect Her is with another Civil War and tactical assassinations of traitors in media and politics… boy, that went South fast, didn’t it? Lol. But, it’s the truth. The stabilization of this country depends on making things here in the US, instead of selling out to the CHICOMS
Was wondering when you were going to finally cover Duckworth. I own at least 12 garments from them, 2 Sawtooths, a Snowcrest, and many many vapor shirts. They’re fantastic.
@@CarlMurawski prefer the Sawtooth for daily life. Easier to layer and I don’t get overly warm indoors with it like I do in my Snowcrest. Love my Snowcrest when I go road tripping or off roading, great shirt jacket to chop wood in and set up camp.
@@CarlMurawski oh yea, another company to check out is Ridge Merino, based around Mammoth, CA. They recently came out with a shirt jacket that I’ll likely pick up next fall. Have liked their base layers quite a bit.
I started working in the maritime industry in the netherlands and I bought a locally made wool beanie for 40 bucks because why not. Head never been warmer. Really really pleased with it, imma start buying wool products more.
Thank you 👍. For $200 you would think they would cross stitch the buttons, which is one of many features I look for in a quality shirt. (I’m not into frequently replacing buttons.)

Great review. But wow....beautiful shirt, but definitely pricey. I think the internet is creating a resurgence of American craftsmanship be it cobbling, boot making, and other consumer products. The direct to consumer model eliminates a lot of the overhead typical of the old brick and mortar business model...As well, a niche business can scale without needing massive infusions of new capital. This is clearly driving the growth of heritage style clothing and footwear. Keep up the reviews Carl. I look forward to them...
I own about 4 pairs of Duckworth lightweight socks and they keep my feet warm in winter. I just ordered two of there Knit Watchman hats can't wait to try them.
Great review as always Carl and your opening comments are all true and valid. I try to buy as much made in USA clothing as possible. But some made in America brands are just out of a lot of peoples budgets. Freenote for example. Their stuff is flat out expensive. I love all their designs but a little to rich for my blood. Especially when their are other options available.
Totally understandable! I feel the same way. In regards to Freenote though, I’ve never felt like I haven’t gotten my money’s worth. The buyers remorse is real though!!!!

There is a great company 'Big Bill' manufacturing all wool jackets in both 18 oz and 24 oz models for about 225 Canadian dollars. They are made in Quebec, north of Montreal. Excellent quality. I recently discovered them and bought the 18 oz model. They are khaki green only. I bought mine from a company called Gostwear.
FYI big bill is just the current line by Codet who has been around a long time. I'm not sure why, but their website and sole branding seems to be big bill. The company is still Codet though.
Got the Ellis Wool Coat by Buffalo Jackson tonight as an early Christmas present from my wife. Wanted it since I saw one of your videos. Was beyond stoked when I opened it and put it on. Until I saw Made in China. Beyond unfortunate. Getting returned tomorrow.
@KimballLeatherCo. It had a massive hole in the pocket. It was a mutual understandong, there were no hard feelings. For a fairly expensive coat, it was more than understandable.

Absolutely love my Duckworth snowcrest shirt. When I throw a crappy jacket from Duluth overtop I’ve been outside in zero F temps for a few hrs and been nice and warm!!! Haven’t even thought about my big -20* carhartt since I’ve had this snowcrest shirt.
johnson woolin mills is subpar, bought a 400 dollar outdoor hunting coat from them like 3 or 4 years ago, coat was very light weight, cheap sewn, hood was like a joke. you could rub your hand across the sleeve and wool fibers would break and fly off all over the place. i own a weatherwool anorak and 2 filson cruisers. thats quality as you know. i will say bimidgi woolin mills makes a very nice heavy wool hunting shirt. 18oz. mine is in burgundy. its warm and beautiful. 80% wool 20% nylon. i still love it.
This reminds me a lot ( probably do to the color ) of the old US ARMY OG-108 wool field shirt. It's only an 80% wool and is probably not as comfortable as the Moreno, but you can find them NOS surplus for as low as $20 for later 70's vintage examples. The 1st pattern from the 50's is thicker I guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 2nd pattern is very comparable to wool shirts available today. If anyone likes the looks of this, wants American made , but doesn't want to spend a lot I'd look into the OG-108 wool field shirt.
I own several pieces of WeatherWool expensive but the best wool I have ever seen. Not many reviews out there but in person you see it is the best wool in the business and ALL AMERICAN MADE.
This is why I love eBay. I can typically find American-made products of great quality at a lower price point, with the added bonus of getting it already broken in. while I understand that the company doesn't see any of that secondary revenue, it's either that or buying cheaper fast fashion and I try to avoid that as much as possible.
I buy what I can new, but you can't beat Ebay and a lot of wool was made better. Wool used to go up to like 36 oz sometimes, but now most cases 24oz is the max. I think bemidgie might go up to 28oz or so in one of their hunting coats but I'm not sure ( I know for sure somebody goes above 24oz ) I buy enough American made hand tools that I don't feel too bad going vintage for most of my wool. I do buy wool vests from C&C sutlery though and bought a Johnson woolen mills cruiser jacket last year that I absolutely love.
Wool is a great material for shirts and jackets. I have a Dale of Norway Stryn jacket that has what they call knitshell. It's a 300+ g/m^2 wool sandwich with a breathable laminate between for weather proofing. It's not quite Goretex but delivers about 8k hydrostatic head & impressive windproofing, while looking and feeling like a quality fine wool product. There's some natural stretch in the material too so you could ski or snowboard in it. It's expensive but I picked mine up for a 50% discount. I saw them in some speciality shops in Ontario. It's handmade in Norway rather than the usual Asian manufacture. It's an offbeat alternative to the usual waterproof insulated winter coats from Arcteryx, Patagonia, Helly Hansen etc.
thanks for covering Duckworth. i too found out about them in your comments. good for the local usa supply chain, jobs here, worker protection, animal treatment standards, national security of manufacturing infrastructure, and knowing my moneys not going to fund communism. all those things help justify a carefully curated collection of higher quality, durable, and initially more expensive goods.
I enjoy your videos, appreciate your insights however, I am going to respectfully suggest that the Melton Shirt from Anian MFG is by far the best heavy weight wool shirt ever. I bought one in every color and have been wearing them daily. Perfect for Alaska summer morning. :). Thanks again keep the videos coming.
I own a screen printing shop. A lot of my customers are the type that give me grief for driving a Toyota. That said I always offer a made in America option for the shirts I print on. No a single one of them will pay the extra for made in USA.
Ordered a shirt from Johnson's Woolen Mills, all plus shipping came to 200$. Parcel was stolen or delivered to wrong address so never received it. Atrocious customer service from Johnson's as they did not do anything and kept stringing me along for weeks by encouraging me to "raise it with the post office" and refusing to spell out their policy for cases like these. E-mailed them almost 10 days ago, after many messages on Facebook, to tell them that the post office rejected my claim and they disappeared. I guess I just ate 200$ for a shirt that's MIA. Avoid at all costs as if anything goes wrong, you are on your own. Plus their shipping fees are extremely higher than all the others. On the other hand, Duckworth customer care is stellar.
It’s not the companies responsibility once it leaves their possession. If the right address was on the parcel, and it was insured, they did everything they can. Everything else is on you and the post office. Obviously it would be nice of them to just send you a free shirt, but you shouldn’t expect that, as it is 0% their fault it disappeared/was stolen.
@@KimballPrecision no they did not do everything they could. They provided a tracking number super later and after much chasing (despite their shipping fees being 300% of the competition) and hence was not able to find out that the parcel was lost on time. I understand not covering lost parcels, but they were stringing me along refusing to give me an answer about their policy and then they outright ghosted me. Clear communication in customer care matters. Hopefully the new owner that bought over the company called me personally and rectified the matter as he understood previous management had dropped the ball on this one.
I have a couple Johnson zip front shirts and they are top quality. I got mine on closeout so didn't pay full price but I think they are worth the price anyway. They are thick and warm.
Check out McNair from England, they do some great slimmer fitting merino shirts. They have one called the mountain shirt if I remember correctly, it's like a jac-shirt
Duckworth is worth every penny. Family business and hellacious quality. I live in Montana where wool proves its mettle. No synthetic material rivals quality wool. When layered, wool is hard to beat and still has most of its insulation qualities even when wet/damp. Duckworth wool is not your fathers wool. I have two of their powder hoodies and a pair of their wool sweat pants. Well made, super comfortable, (no scratch or itch issue - none) and warm. They hand wash/dry well and handle abuse (work and play). Subscribe to their email and wait for their sales for significant savings. The brand has made me a wool junkie.
Johnson Mills from Vermont. Best on earth. Period. Can’t emphasize that enough. That’s from years of wearing their Jac-shirts in the woods. They are incredible. Don’t waste your money on anything else. All others are simply copying Johnson. No. I do not work for them. I don’t have family there. I don’t have an investment in them. My opinion is strong though because I have always turned to them.
I am in Canada and I appreciate US made products but Honestly 200-300$=~400CAD for a shirt? Who really can afford it? Those who can afford this shirt probably not working class people 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks Carl for another great introduction 👍🏻
I understand, and you're right. I'd never buy five or six of these and work in them every day. This is really best suited as a mid layer in the colder months. It won't get very dirty and you still get all the wool benefits.
that is definitely not the case, about working class people not buying/ afford these higher price items. i could have easily bought one of these shirts instead of a playstation 5, and i usually invest 120-150$ us in each pair of work pants.
Hi for me Pendleton is the best ,I have at least ten in my closet, and couple filson's, couple other brands I don't wear, I have vintage Pendleton that I have worn a hole in the elbow, still has all the original buttons probably will never quite wearing it.
I just picked up an army field shirt It looks identical in the design except for two things the buttons are OD Green has a white army tag Oh three things and it has flaps over the big pockets but the stitching in the back curve cut are exactly the same and it's 27 degrees outside I have the thermal shirt on and then I have this wool shirt on and then I do just find and I found it in age army surplus store brand new it has never been used so there's still being made and I paid $35 for it in the same store last month I paid 165 for a Johnson Woolen Mills field jacket which is not a stick the wind goes right through this when he hold it up the light can't see through it all the Johnsons going Mills jacket up the light you see right through it
I buy products made in America whenever possible. Even if they're more expensive. But, only if that product is worth it. I will not buy a junk product simply because it is made in America.
Why is it so hard to find a wool shirt these days? I used to get wool blend at K-Mart, they were so common. Any quality suppliers had them, including those you mention here.

@@CarlMurawski I use the 12 inch lace to toe loggers for dirty work and the red dawg lotes for my part time mowing buisness. The 12 inch lace to toe have a superior construction similar to a custom boot. The red dawg lites are of sufficient construction for the price.

Add cedar boards or bags of cedar chips to your drawers that have your wool garments. May not be as good as full cedar chests, but has to be better than nothing.
I am a Duckworth Addict....I have at least 10 garments from them. Won't buy any other brand. I am on Ski Patrol in Wyoming so I use this stuff everyday.
Hey Carl. In all of your research, have you come across a decent source of wool products for tall men? Most manufacturers either don’t offer it, or it’s not in stock very often.
I don't have any experience with them, but Ball and Buck is suppose to be an American made clothing company focused on the outdoors. May be worth looking into to cover on your channel.
I ordered from Duckworth the night of 4/29. I mistakenly did not click on medium and the order went through as small. I immediately, I mean within minutes, emailed their customer service to ask for help or cancellation of the order, as stated in their FAQ. Never received a reply. 14 hours later I get an e-mail that the garment has been shipped. I called the customer service number to speak to someone. Crickets. Just a recording. I'll request a return authorization when the garment comes. At the moment, I'm wondering if I'll be eating a $300.00 wool shirt.
as a follow up, Duckworth contacted me a few days later, then went above and beyond in resolving the problem. They provide stellar customer service as well as an exceptional product. I ordered the Snowcrest shirt. A really great piece.
Hello, sir. Do you like to layer with that shirt or wear it by itself? As for Johnson Woolen Mills. I ordered one of their flannels and surprisingly I was not happy with the cut. I ordered a XXL so I could wear a couple layers on underneath. I was very disappointed. The cut was very constricting and not much room for movement...even with just one layer on underneath. I like to layer and I am 100 percent undershirt guy. But I don't want to turn you off if you are interested. Good luck if you want to try Johnson Woolen Mills.

I wear between a L and XL for most brands and bought an XL Green Mountain Flannel (which Johnson Woolen Mills owns/bought). It has about 1/2 size larger than I expected but is manageable. Thinking about washing it in hot water to see how it shrinks.

Have you tried the wool shirt from varusteleka for about 100 €....I think it s merino wool too ....more like outdoor stuff the « grain » of wool is not so fine
Just curious, what is your experience with Bombas socks? I have some athletic socks with a cotton blend from them that have been holding up great but most of the wool socks I have seem to have loose fabric and holes form pretty quickly

I tried Pendleton, but was displeased with the quality control and fit. Ended up with Fjallraven Ovik Re-Wool shirt. Not American made, but great quality and fit. There is a Canadian company called Anian that I would love to try at some point.

My rules for clothing, if it's an article of clothing that will last me for a long time like a jacket, flannel, boots, shoes, etc I'm happy to pay the money for made in the usa or made in a first world country. shirts and undergarments come from walmart and sams club
I'm interested in 100% pure merino garments so this theoretically gets my attention, but I am not interested in 100% merino fabrics stitched with cotton or worse polyester thread and polyester or acrylic labels...do you happen to know what they use for thread off the top of your head? and have you found their customer service would be able to handle doing something with nothing except wool, and natural ie non plastic buttons? I'm starting to think i'll just have to make my own but I want to believe out there somewhere some old timer institutions know exactly why 100% wool with only natural dyes is the better way to go. Seems like you may care about these types of things yourself...

Yuuuuup! I own a sawtooth flannel, I paid $150 for it and damn was it expensive but it is a nice shirt.

E-mailed them almost 10 days ago, after many messages on Facebook, to tell them that the post office rejected my claim and they disappeared. I guess I just ate 200$ for a shirt that's MIA. Avoid at all costs as if anything goes wrong, you are on your own. Plus their shipping fees are extremely higher than all the others.
On the other hand, Duckworth customer care is stellar.
It’s not the companies responsibility once it leaves their possession. If the right address was on the parcel, and it was insured, they did everything they can. Everything else is on you and the post office. Obviously it would be nice of them to just send you a free shirt, but you shouldn’t expect that, as it is 0% their fault it disappeared/was stolen.
@@KimballPrecision no they did not do everything they could. They provided a tracking number super later and after much chasing (despite their shipping fees being 300% of the competition) and hence was not able to find out that the parcel was lost on time. I understand not covering lost parcels, but they were stringing me along refusing to give me an answer about their policy and then they outright ghosted me. Clear communication in customer care matters. Hopefully the new owner that bought over the company called me personally and rectified the matter as he understood previous management had dropped the ball on this one.
I have a couple Johnson zip front shirts and they are top quality. I got mine on closeout so didn't pay full price but I think they are worth the price anyway. They are thick and warm.
Check out McNair from England, they do some great slimmer fitting merino shirts. They have one called the mountain shirt if I remember correctly, it's like a jac-shirt
I have a made to measure McNair heavyweight mountain shirt. The quality and craftsmanship is incredible.
Duckworth is worth every penny. Family business and hellacious quality. I live in Montana where wool proves its mettle. No synthetic material rivals quality wool. When layered, wool is hard to beat and still has most of its insulation qualities even when wet/damp. Duckworth wool is not your fathers wool. I have two of their powder hoodies and a pair of their wool sweat pants. Well made, super comfortable, (no scratch or itch issue - none) and warm. They hand wash/dry well and handle abuse (work and play). Subscribe to their email and wait for their sales for significant savings. The brand has made me a wool junkie.
My closet if full of Filson. Because of this channel. Love their wool.

Johnson Mills from Vermont. Best on earth. Period. Can’t emphasize that enough. That’s from years of wearing their Jac-shirts in the woods. They are incredible. Don’t waste your money on anything else. All others are simply copying Johnson. No. I do not work for them. I don’t have family there. I don’t have an investment in them. My opinion is strong though because I have always turned to them.
I am in Canada and I appreciate US made products but Honestly 200-300$=~400CAD for a shirt? Who really can afford it? Those who can afford this shirt probably not working class people 🤷🏻♂️

I understand, and you're right. I'd never buy five or six of these and work in them every day. This is really best suited as a mid layer in the colder months. It won't get very dirty and you still get all the wool benefits.
that is definitely not the case, about working class people not buying/ afford these higher price items. i could have easily bought one of these shirts instead of a playstation 5, and i usually invest 120-150$ us in each pair of work pants.
Check out their polaris henley. If it's not the best undershirt you've ever own I'll buy it for you. Same goes for breifs, maverick and vapor tees.

Hi for me Pendleton is the best ,I have at least ten in my closet, and couple filson's, couple other brands I don't wear, I have vintage Pendleton that I have worn a hole in the elbow, still has all the original buttons probably will never quite wearing it.

I just picked up an army field shirt It looks identical in the design except for two things the buttons are OD Green has a white army tag Oh three things and it has flaps over the big pockets but the stitching in the back curve cut are exactly the same and it's 27 degrees outside I have the thermal shirt on and then I have this wool shirt on and then I do just find and I found it in age army surplus store brand new it has never been used so there's still being made and I paid $35 for it in the same store last month I paid 165 for a Johnson Woolen Mills field jacket which is not a stick the wind goes right through this when he hold it up the light can't see through it all the Johnsons going Mills jacket up the light you see right through it

I buy products made in America whenever possible. Even if they're more expensive. But, only if that product is worth it. I will not buy a junk product simply because it is made in America.

Why is it so hard to find a wool shirt these days? I used to get wool blend at K-Mart, they were so common. Any quality suppliers had them, including those you mention here.

@@CarlMurawski I use the 12 inch lace to toe loggers for dirty work and the red dawg lotes for my part time mowing buisness. The 12 inch lace to toe have a superior construction similar to a custom boot. The red dawg lites are of sufficient construction for the price.

Add cedar boards or bags of cedar chips to your drawers that have your wool garments. May not be as good as full cedar chests, but has to be better than nothing.
$200 for an item that is seasonal is just so much. I wear my Nicks boots each day I work so I get having quality. For a shirt though......

Hey Carl. In all of your research, have you come across a decent source of wool products for tall men? Most manufacturers either don’t offer it, or it’s not in stock very often.
I don't have any experience with them, but Ball and Buck is suppose to be an American made clothing company focused on the outdoors. May be worth looking into to cover on your channel.

I ordered from Duckworth the night of 4/29. I mistakenly did not click on medium and the order went through as small. I immediately, I mean within minutes, emailed their customer service to ask for help or cancellation of the order, as stated in their FAQ. Never received a reply. 14 hours later I get an e-mail that the garment has been shipped. I called the customer service number to speak to someone. Crickets. Just a recording. I'll request a return authorization when the garment comes. At the moment, I'm wondering if I'll be eating a $300.00 wool shirt.
as a follow up, Duckworth contacted me a few days later, then went above and beyond in resolving the problem. They provide stellar customer service as well as an exceptional product. I ordered the Snowcrest shirt. A really great piece.

Hello, sir. Do you like to layer with that shirt or wear it by itself? As for Johnson Woolen Mills. I ordered one of their flannels and surprisingly I was not happy with the cut. I ordered a XXL so I could wear a couple layers on underneath. I was very disappointed. The cut was very constricting and not much room for movement...even with just one layer on underneath. I like to layer and I am 100 percent undershirt guy. But I don't want to turn you off if you are interested. Good luck if you want to try Johnson Woolen Mills.

I wear between a L and XL for most brands and bought an XL Green Mountain Flannel (which Johnson Woolen Mills owns/bought). It has about 1/2 size larger than I expected but is manageable. Thinking about washing it in hot water to see how it shrinks.

Just curious, what is your experience with Bombas socks? I have some athletic socks with a cotton blend from them that have been holding up great but most of the wool socks I have seem to have loose fabric and holes form pretty quickly

Man, I'd love to help but take my advice with a grain of salt. I went a full size down from my normal Red Wing shoe size. This worked for me.

I tried Pendleton, but was displeased with the quality control and fit. Ended up with Fjallraven Ovik Re-Wool shirt. Not American made, but great quality and fit. There is a Canadian company called Anian that I would love to try at some point.

How about how to care for this? It’s not something you want to toss in the washer and dryer and dry cleaning is crazy expensive for a shirt like this.
Well luckily you don't have to wash it as much as cotton, but it's still not as easy to clean unfortunately.

I'm interested in 100% pure merino garments so this theoretically gets my attention, but I am not interested in 100% merino fabrics stitched with cotton or worse polyester thread and polyester or acrylic labels...do you happen to know what they use for thread off the top of your head? and have you found their customer service would be able to handle doing something with nothing except wool, and natural ie non plastic buttons?
I'm starting to think i'll just have to make my own but I want to believe out there somewhere some old timer institutions know exactly why 100% wool with only natural dyes is the better way to go. Seems like you may care about these types of things yourself...
