Seeing aja kong in that thimbnail reminded of something ive been meaning to ask you for ages. Bro, you NEEEED to do a video essay on the bull nakano wwwa title reign and her feud woth aja kong. Its just a work of art. Judging from how you talk about wrestling on these videos i think youd love it It could be a series of its own like the danielson vs mcguiness feud or walking the kings road.
50:03 A note about Misawa's eye injury that I just learned through my research, that I'm sharing with you a couple weeks before I'll put it in my next series of PWO posts: it *was* legitimate, but the kayfabe reason (that it was sustained during a RWTL match against Kobashi & Kikuchi) was a coverup. In reality, Misawa suffered it during a bar fight with Kawada the night after that show. Liger happened to be drinking at the same bar, and Kawada suggested they join him, but Misawa was hostile to the notion of drinking with a wrestler from a rival organization. Things escalated from there, and when Misawa slugged Kawada, he didn't back down because there were young AJPW wrestlers and ring crew at the bar. Unless the book I'm transcribing pulls out something else, this appears to have been the first real-world incident where Misawa and Kawada's tensions got ugly. That's right; the Beast God was indirectly responsible for the Holy Demon Army.
I'm gonna be for real when I say that you deserve way more subs and views. Your video essays are genuinely really informative and you never show ANY bias. If It wasn't for Walking the Kings Road I wouldn't have known that much about the magic of AJPW. So thanks!
As spongebob said “I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready” also I changed my name because I’m an uncle now. I’m gonna do the best I can. Gonna be on that uncle duty
Pleasantly surprised to see the Kawada/Taue January Korakuen Match so high on the list. Such a brutal, intense sprint that gets straight to the point and sees these two have a fight. Kind of reminiscent of the Cena/Lesnar match from Extreme Rules in terms of the visceral violence the two dish out. EDIT: currently #7 on the Wrestler of the Year list and my guess is Kawada takes #1 unless Jumbo comes in clutch again.
1. No reason really. 2. Ko-fi doesn't take a percentage and also, I'm not currently in a position where I can confidently maintain providing rewards to different tiers of patrons.
Awesome video Joseph 💯 ... I love your best of year series and walking the kings road series keep making more of these awesome videos ... It was because of your channel I bought the history of Misawa Vs Tsuruta volume 1 dvd 😉💪💥💯
I can shed some light into the fantasia vs thundercats match, it comes from a moment in time where the company and promoter in charge were pushing masked fantasy gimmicks, El Fantasma, Super Muneco, Darth Vader, etc and so the biggest two trios were thundercats and the fantasia trio who went into a bloody feud by the end of the previous year and that led to the apuestas match the thundercats lost because let's face it Super Muneco and friends ain't jobbing, he's one of there top draws.
This is lightly unrelated but I have nothing to add to the video, it’s great as usual. How many languages do you speak? Your English is perfect. And I’m assuming that’s a second language. And your Spanish & Japanese pronunciations always strike me as you being able to speak those languages as well. I’ve always been curious
I speak English and Filipino. Spanish, I only know as much as they taught me in college. The Japanese is just me watching the matches enough that I pick up the pronunciation from the announcers.
For some reason your discussion of the Thundercats/Fantasia Trios Match reminded me of that moment of blood from the Kingston/Shane Storm match you talked about in the Eddie Kingston 5 Match Primer.
Man i love these !!! Im now returning to watch again 6 months after my last comment ! I cant help it ! I wish you could put out more! Your the best ! I could watch your stuff every day !
Watched Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Masahito Kakihara bc of this video, I understand why a shoot style promotion doesnt work and the match misses elements of wrestling we love, but in a microdose that sort of match is a spectacle to watch and appreciate.
Taue WAS killer in hindsight . At first he was my least favorite in all those matches . But after watching all this over and over again , i gained a HUGE appreciation for him . I now can see all the things he did to glue stuff together . And more
Again, I'm blown away another great video. From the soothing music to the smooth voice our host, it's just so chill, and I love it. I also love the wrestling knowledge I get from this, Mr. Montecillo is a real expert on this sort of stuff, and he's introduced me to a whole other side of professional wrestling.
I watched Atlantis vs. Blue Panther the other day and man it freaking slaps. Not the match of the year obviously, but it slaps nonetheless. Of the matches I’ve seen from 1991, I’d have to say Jushin Liger is the most fun wrestler to watch, but that’s just my take. Great video!
Once again, absolutely fantastic work from all involved on my favorite youtube channel. When the channel started I simply looked forward to the King's Road series. As time went on I found myself looking forward to the monthly reviews, the miscellaneous essays and especially the Daniel Bryan content. Now after this and 1990 I'm ready to see you take on the rest of the 90s and beyond. Whatever you decide to do next I'll be watching. Your content remains must see for me 100% of the time.
Love these videos. Loved the 90 video so much I legit created my own watchlist spreadsheet so I could hunt down some of the essential matches of the year. Honestly, some of it sounded promising like the stuff from EMLL and UWF. Thanks, Joseph. Keep it up. P.S. if you have any other matches from 1990 you wanna recommend that you didn't mention in the video, let me know.
Man ! You know whats up ! I grew up in this era a fan since 85 , you are spot on with my thoughts for the most ! I wish i could have followed AJPW as it happened then . I was a couple years behind before i found a place to order the tapes ! I had seen some of them and NJPW on a random comp tape i got my hands on . and was hooked ! Plus the Japan Supershow with WCW i watched over and over !
I rewatched Kawada/Taue from January a couple of weeks ago and yeah that match fucks. I also rewatched the Enforcers Vs Dustin and Steamboat match the other night and I love that match. Really is a personal favorite of mine for many reasons.
Love the lil touch by IQWrestler in the intro where in the clip where Misawa delivers his signature Elbow, you can see the text, "Misawa's elbow is God." No I didn't pause it to check but watching the intro a few times I noticed and realized it.
Another great video. I was 7 years old in 1991 and already a firm wrestling fan. Loved the Steiners back then and still love watching their matches today. They were such a great team.
I’m not as big of a Taue fan as Joseph. I feel like he’s a great piece of a tag team , especially as the bigger enforcer type when paired with the smaller Kawada. Never seen the MVC match where he plays face in peril, but that’s not a role in which I can imagine him excelling
I'd honestly love to see you do a full video on someone like Masa Fuichi and especially Bull Nakano; hell, I think that you could do a full 'Walking The King's Road' style retrospective on the Aja Kong and Bull Nakano feud or even just All Japan Women in general.
love this type of videos Joseph you need to check Johnny Saint and the world of sports and probably make a video about, but most importantly check it out, you will love it!
Consider supporting the channel by buying me a ☕ at ko-fi.com/josephmontecillo! Let's talk wrestling on Twitter @josephweirdness!

I'm ready for this one.
Where's1989 Years Best in Wrestling?
I swear, this channel has the biggest disparity in quality of content vs amount of people who engage with it. Absolute top tier stuff here.
Agreed. Like, across all of UA-cam.

Love these videos, really makes the world of wrestling feel connected somehow.
I'm gonna be for real when I say that you deserve way more subs and views.

So thanks!
Thank you! I must disagree on one point however, these videos are filled to brimming with my opinions and are thus all my bias.
Kawada in first place 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 Always and I mean ALWAYS push forward.
But the sad part is the disappointment will be coming soon 😔 but for now let’s celebrate, Toshiaki Kawada, the best wrestler of 1991
I’ve been waiting for your next upload and I can’t say I’m disappointed, Keep up the good work much love!

question: why did you start from the 90s, what about the 80s? also, why do you prefer ko-fi over patreon?
1. No reason really.
2. Ko-fi doesn't take a percentage and also, I'm not currently in a position where I can confidently maintain providing rewards to different tiers of patrons.
90s Japanese wrestling puts 90s WWF (and even early 90s WCW) to shame.
Awesome video Joseph 💯 ... I love your best of year series and walking the kings road series keep making more of these awesome videos ... It was because of your channel I bought the history of Misawa Vs Tsuruta volume 1 dvd 😉💪💥💯
Grate Video, more people outside of Mexico needs to know about the Brazos.

0:44 IQWrestler did a great job with the 90's vibe in the title sequence, also the production of this is just top notch quality.
Much love!

Can't wait for 1992 and another episode of walking the king's road.

I found this channel yesterday. I love it, keep making videos like this
Taue WAS killer in hindsight . At first he was my least favorite in all those matches . But after watching all this over and over again , i gained a HUGE appreciation for him . I now can see all the things he did to glue stuff together . And more
I did not think there would be a sequel to the first video but i'm happily surprised
Again, I'm blown away another great video. From the soothing music to the smooth voice our host, it's just so chill, and I love it. How does Bret Hart vs Mr Perfect not make the list? That’s insane.
I don't think Joseph likes WWF.
Looking forward to the judging of Akira Hokuto's 93 year, shit is legendary.
this is my favourite channel, good job sir

Love the lil touch by IQWrestler in the intro where in the clip where Misawa delivers his signature Elbow, you can see the text, "Misawa's elbow is God." No I didn't pause it to check but watching the intro a few times I noticed and realized it.
That's cause Q is a fucking legend
Sooo, El Gigante didn't make top 20? Hmm. Questionable list.
Awesome video, I'd love to see more of this series

Your videos are legit masterpieces bro
Comprehensive much?
The king is back
El Gigante*
The little voice crack when you said Kobashi was great at getting his knee shattered was great
I'd honestly love to see you do a full video on someone like Masa Fuichi and especially Bull Nakano; hell, I think that you could do a full 'Walking The King's Road' style retrospective on the Aja Kong and Bull Nakano feud or even just All Japan Women in general.
love this type of videos
