Flaps 1 Config is used for cooling the hydaulic fluids in hot environments.

  • @SamCarstairs

    From the a320 FCOM
    "FLAPS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . RETRACT
    · Set the FLAP lever to position 0.
    · If the approach was made in icing conditions, or if the runway was contaminated with
slush or snow, do not retract the flaps and slats until after engine shutdown and after
the ground crew has confirmed that flaps and slats are clear of obstructing ice.
    · On ground, hot weather conditions may cause overheating to be detected around the
bleed ducts in the wings, resulting in "AIR L(R) WING LEAK" warnings. Such warnings
may be avoided during transit by keeping the slats in Configuration 1 when the OAT
    is above 30°C."

I know on the Airbus 330/340 at hot climates, flap 1 is left extended at the gate to prevent the air bleed overheat warning.

  • @OblivionPlays
    @OblivionPlays 8 років тому +7

Matt they leave the flaps in config 1 when the OAT is above 30oC. This is to prevent the AIR L(R) WING LEAK warning from appearing due to high temperatures around the bleed ducts in the wings. Apparently this is only present in older airbus aircraft.
Interestingly early CRJs had a problem where the flaps would warp; so they had to be left in flap 15 at the gate, allowing them to be inspected during the walkaround. This has since been fixed though.

The flaps are normally set to 1 during weather over 30 degrees so that the bleed air ducts in the leading edge of the wing don't get too hot and cause the bleed overheat messages to go off. It's a procedure only used for larger airbus aircraft I believe (A300 upwards). This is why you noticed it on EK A380's.

Apparently it is recommended by Airbus to leave flaps and slats and stage 1+f in hot/ humid conditions (+30 C) to stop the trailing edges overheating. Something to do with hydraulic pressure building due to the increased temperature :)

  • @Thphnts

The Airbus SOP for retracting flaps in hot conditions (Ie. Dubai), is to leave 1+F extended after landing in certain temperatures. It is to avoid conflicting ECAM memos and (i think) hydraulic issues. Open to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Good to see that you are back on the T7. I like your PMDG 777 vids! Like to see more.
The reason that the flaps are not retracted on Airbus planes is because the sensor for the fuel Temp is in the wing. if they leave the flaps extended cool air can pass through and cool the sensor a bit. this is done when the temperature outside is warm off course. If they would retract the flaps and let the plane bake in the sun the pilots could get a fuel temp warning when departing.
    Good flight!

On certain Airbus types flaps should be left at 1+F if the OAT is 30C or greater to prevent bleed duct overheat warnings in the wings. If the flaps aren't left at 1+F you can get the warning AIR L(R) WING LEAK.

  • @vibesix

Because you flew to Turkey, which is a hot environment, it could be because in hot temperatures, the flaps are kept extended at Flaps 1 so the the bleed air ducts in the leading edges don't become too hot. If they do, overheat messages appear.

CYHZ-CYUL-CYTZ. In a Porter Airlines Q400. It would be a fun 2 parter! The flight from Halifax to Montreal (CYHZ-CYUL) is about 1 hourr 42min and is a basic flight from a smaller airport to a bigger one. Then you have a quick turn around and the fun begins. Toronto City Center (CYTZ) is an airport on an island on the waterfront of downtown Toronto Ontario. The airport has 3 runways but only one the dash can land on. The runway is very short and fun to land on. Please consider this. I think it would be fun for both you and the viewers. If you want any more info just let me know! Thanks and keep up the amazing content!

Ok Matt, after a quick bit of research it seems that airbuses while parked used to have an overheat issue, which could cause leaks and other issues around the wings, this issue is solved by leaving the flaps down at setting one if the outside air temperature is above 30 Celsius. Airbus did then make a modification to fix this issue whoever some carriers still operated unmodded aircraft, and typically they use the flap down procedure for all of their aircraft, weather they've had the fix or not.

+Streaky100001 Oh, and the other instance is that if the aircraft had landed in icing conditions the flaps would be left retracted until the maintenance team had checked for icing in the hinges and such.

+Matt Davies Actually, Matt, would you mind throwing some ideas at me of how to solve an FSX issue I'm having? Since I moved to my new PC I switched to the steam version of FSX and re-installed Ezdok and track IR but neither seem to be working correctly, Ezdok launches with the game but then seems to refuse to acknowledge that I am actually in an aircraft and might want to make use of it, and track IR again runs and works fine in other games but wont work in FSX, any ideas?
