    Just arrived here from your IG and subscribed. Great story. Thanks for breaking it down. We are having that struggle here in the US and need to move on before it implodes.

    That’s why according to the Daily Telegraph, one in five Brits in the U.K. are considering on leaving.

      Current estimates are that 100k brits a year leaving. My wife and I will soon be contributing to the figure. :)

    I have reached that level now.
    I have traveled and worked in both Spain&America and they were great.
    I have returned to finish a masters degree then will be heading out to Africa or Middle East.
    Nothing has changed here we’re all just working to survive not thrive.

    Could you do a cost-of-living comparison between the UK and Tanzania, as I’m leaving the UK next year after I’ve sold my house and Africa sounds like a bloody good option.

    Mate this is one of the best heart to videos I've seen about living abroad. I did it myself almost 25 years ago. What you say in your videos is 100% correct! I'm going back to the UK next week and even staying with friends and family, not nowhere near the accommodation I'm used to. Let alone what I'm gonna have to pay for things. Writing this from my balcony as I look at the ocean and see 1,000kg cow on the lot over from me is roaming around eating up the grass on the neighboring lot. God bless!

      Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s amazing how much perspective can change over time. Safe travels back to the UK, and enjoy the time with friends and family. That ocean view and the roaming cow sound like quite the sight! God bless!

    Sir i am an hvac engineer in Aec construction industry i am always curious what are the secrets of those employees or co workers who achieve the massive growth in shorter time frame in their respective fields of work ? Have you observed that some people seems Gifted or do they have some other things working at place which we fail to see..

    Great video and i aim to also migrate. The uk has gone downhill and cost of living is ridiculous and most of your salary goes on bills.
    Can you advise, what do you do for a living and also how much u need to live on now or maybe make a video on your current monthly expenditure ?
    Thanks.

    Hey Russell! nice reflections. Much of it resonates with me. I had it even worse than you. I'm originally from Argentina where architects are paid shit, so before I finished uni (20 years ago) I was already a 3D arch viz expert and most of the work I did was for overseas so i did very well, but my friends all made shit money doing all those jobs that no architect wants to do. All the other things you described apply to them but they weren't even able to live independently and depended on living at home for years after graduation. So I skipped that part, left the country when I got my degree and went straight to work as an architect in China. I stayed there for 6 years and it was simply amazing, got the best jobs focusing on design, amazing projects all the time and made very good money. But here's the thing, and I wonder how this applies to you too. I made very good money because I was a foreigner and they saw me not only because I was indeed a good architect designer, but also because I was white. Because of this, I made way more than my Chinese colleagues that as a whole, had many years more of experience than me. The reason why I bring this up is this, When you mention that people outside of the west idealise the west, is because in their own countries they make infinitely less money than you and I in their countries, so I don't think it is fair to tell these guys not to idealise it because when any of them make it to work in Europe/Australia/US, Canada, they do have in fact a much better life, even when they are subject to the same constraints you describe in the first part of your video. Now I live in Australia and you know what it's like here. I share pretty much what you say regarding life as an architect in the wealthy world, but at the same time I know very well that I had preferential treatment when I worked in China which made it waaay more convenient for me than it was for the locals. Can you relate to this as a mzungu working in Tanzania? Do your local colleagues make as much as you do and are able to have a maid and all the luxuries you enjoy? I cycled across 38 countries in Africa including Tanzania, but I never lived there so I'm curious. If I had known you I would've paid a visit :) I enjoy your videos!

    • @ArchitectRussell
      @ArchitectRussell  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for that very interesting. Yeah of course I get paid good money but I did have quite a bit of experience compared to the other people when I started. So I’m kind of giving value. Yes there are perks being white I guess. I’d love to work in China , I did many videos when I went to visit just before corona virus. I would actually say it’s one of my favourite countries. Sounds like you were there when it was booming with foreign architects. I don’t think it’s like that any more. Saudi is probably the next place.

    • @johnsonmolla
      @johnsonmolla 5 місяців тому +2

      That's exactly what's happening here. He's making good money because he's mzungu. He's getting paid in European scales.

      @@johnsonmolla well, but that doesn't mean that he is not worth it what he is paid. So don't be too quick to judge

      @@ArchitectRussell Yeah mate, China used to be an architect's heaven, especially if you wanted to focus on design only. That's what they need as for since they truly suck at creative task. This has a longer explanation, but it's also changing as more rich Chinese kids trained in the west return there... Think M.A.D and others. On the downside, you won't build your construction skills at all, that's what they are good for. I did catch the boom and lived there from 2007 to 2013, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. It is not that they stopped needing foreign architects, it's just their economy is going to shit and their bread and butter, which were all those huge residential projects that are now empty, are gone. It also became more hardcore after I left when Xi took over. Lots more to say, but that's in a nutshell :)

    • @johnsonmolla
      @johnsonmolla 5 місяців тому +1

      @@80lives I know he's worth it. I have been following up his work for a few years. I was simply pointing out that locals do not make the same amount of money. I am in the same city and same industry as him. I've worked with foreigners who made 3x, 5x as I did while doing more or less the same job.

    UK has gotten boring. Like all it is now is houses and corner shops. No fun places like an Arcade place, bowling center or just anything. We had quite a lot of fun things here, but all got taken down now and in replace of it is just houses and a shop

    The thing is people are lining up to work for those jobs that pay 1500. If you don’t want it, next one. So either get a better job or move out which most people can’t do.
