- Lake Tahoe is so clear that in some places objects can be seen to depths of over 70 feet. Historically, one could see quite a bit deeper, but the Lake lost much of its clarity to pollution related to unchecked development in the twentieth century. Watch to learn more about Lake Tahoe's clarity, and what you can do to protect the jewel of the Sierra Nevada.

I used to live at south Shore about 1960. The lake was even more clear then.
Golf courses are the Killer Lake Tahoe how many golf courses and you'll see why you go on the upper Truckee and right above the golf course on Highway 50 the river is no moss clean Rock go to the golf course and down it turns to Green long-haired algae all the nutrients are running off the golf courses into the rivers into the lake algae blooms making a Clarity lose and there's a lot of golf courses
Grassy meadows filter the water flowing into the lake. Its by design. That's why meadows are preserved.
Don't allow ANY lawn enhancing products anywhere within a 25 mile radius of the lake. Also tie in all storm drains and catch basins so they can get treated before running off into the lake.
"objects can be seen to depths of over 70 feet..."
in 1960 they could be seen over 100 feet.
I was just there two weeks ago. I wish I could have seen what it looked like around there 200 years ago.
@@steinoforange6320 Not if I was there with someone that couldn't run as fast as me..
My family had a cabin on South Shore while I was growing up in the ‘60’s, and my father fished the lake 2-3 times a week.
Two things I remember:
1) being able to watch the fish “follow the lure” from about 50’ out - the water was so clear, you would sometimes yank on the fishing pole in advance of a strike
2) motoring through Emerald Bay and being able to see small rocks on the lake floor maybe 100’ deep
I’ll never forget that...60 years ago
One does not simply YANK on a fishing pole son.
One of the great natural wonders of the world.
I’ve been to Lake Tahoe many times, and hiked & walked in areas close to the lake. It’s always shocking to see how much dog poop is left on or near sidewalks, walkways and trails. In Europe they have a gr8 method of tracking the irresponsible offenders, the dog owners. The Municipalities collect DNA from every dog, So when a pile of dog doo is found, the authorities can easily find out which dog it belongs to and who the owners are & they are fined heavily. This is what we need in the US. It’s disgusting and ridiculous that some dog owners refuse to pick up their dog crap & get away with it. And this disease causing waste finds its way to Lake Tahoe in run-off.
Chill bro
And it’s freezing cold in every season. Beautiful like no other though.
We use to see how long it took to turn our lips blue.😄
Jane Beatty , funny.
Beautiful area been to Lake Tahoe when I was stationed in Fallon Nevada back In 69/70. Sure do miss that area.
And as always humans ruin beautiful natural occurrences with our artificial structures
Lil Durk Your hair is artificial.
artidicial structures are more beautifull
Because it is snow water and it is called flau water..
..and other things....calcium h20...not so good to drink...I learned all this in Glacier National Park from o e of the Ranger talks...on orientation.
I remember seeing a National Geographic Magazine spotlight on Tahoe’s awesome sewage treatment process. This was many many years ago. A gentleman dressed in a lab coat like a scientist is holding up a beaker filled with treated water…and claimed it was pretty much drinkable.
Shouldn’t it be Keep Tahoe Clear?
I know the dam on the Truckee river in Tahoe City is there for flood control for Reno, but if that dam was removed the lake would flush itself naturally. The water would be clear and alot of rich peoples boat docks would be high and dry a good part of the year.
Thats cool
lol

This is what lake Huron use to look like but in a matter of 40 years industries and large commercial ships have managed to ruin it there is nothing but a brown slimy algae left on the shore line
I can see this in the near future that Lake Tahoe its Water Resource can be used to pump water two major cities in the state of California and some of that water can be used 4 Farmers along the Central Valley in the state of California I believe that will happen in the near future and I hope it does because Californians need water and it looks like Lake Tahoe has never been tapped.!!!!!
@anthony diaz Ik right 😂😂😂😂
That will NEVER happen Gary... not in a million years!
