    One thing some reactors seem to conclude at first is that the Maidens ARE his daughters. Based on viewing this and the World of Remnant on the story of the seasons, I draw a different conclusion. During one of Oz's lives spent mourning in isolation, he encountered four sisters whose kindness renewed his faith in humanity, and also reminded him of his lost daughters. That additional resonance helped convince him to bestow his magic upon those sisters.

    • @Renzya

    This chapter gives a dark new meaning to why Dust is called Dust. When The God of Darkness wiped out humanity, all that remained was dust. Salem then says in Volume 1 Chapter 1 that man was "born from dust." We now know she is specifically talking about humanity's second time around. That's why Dust Crystals seem to have magical properties. The second wave of humanity was born from the dust of the first, and the crystalized substance we refer to as Dust is what remains of the first humanity's magic.
    Miles and Kerry (the lead writers and directors of the show) said that this episode was originally even longer and they had a lot more direct explanation about the mechanics of the world of Remnant like this, but I actually think what we got works much better. It keeps the focus on Salem and Ozpin's history and just gives the viewer the parts to piece together for themselves things like humanity's return and where Dust comes from.

      I'm thinking Dust is actually moon chunks that basically got magically irradiated by Darkness plowing through it. I feel like them being basically fossil fuels of old humanity is a bit too dark for this show.

    • @hdns4
      @hdns4 2 роки тому +23

      @@joemorgan2390 Interesting idea, but I don't think it's too dark for this stage in RWBY, especially when it's not explicitly said, but is heavily implied, going as far as to have Oz look at the Dust crystals when Jin says "No one could perform magic like mankind was once capable of." If you listen to the director's commentary tracks, Kerry and Miles also further imply this to be the case. They hint at a dark history behind Remnant and Dust all the way back in the Volume 1 commentary, and then they hint a little more specifically at what I'm saying in the Volume 6 commentary.

    Here we are, the big one, "The Lost Fable." There was so much foreshadowing towards this event even in the early Volumes, as this was something they had planned out since the very early days of RWBY. We now know why the world is called Remnant, it is but a remnant of the world that it once was, a remnant of what humanity once was. Also, to answer your question of how humanity came back, we need only to return to the very first chapter of the very first Volume to find our answer, as Salem put it in her narration, "Man, born from dust, was strong, wise, and resourceful, but he was born into an unforgiving world." There was even foreshadowing to this in the very same narration. "Legends, stories scattered through time. Mankind has grown quite fond of recounting the exploits of heroes and villains, forgetting so easily that we are remnants, byproducts of a forgotten past." This forgotten past being the original time of humanity, before being wiped out by the God of Darkness. Now, without magic, which everyone had in that time, humanity can only rely on Dust for their survival.
    Now when you go back to very beginning of the show, it's given a whole new context, certain lines will correlate to this story. I love these kinds of reveals that recontextualize the entire series and give new meaning that wasn't there before, gives you another reason to rewatch the series.
    We now know why Raven said, "There is no beating Salem" in Volume 5. Salem is immortal, she can't die, neither from fatal injuries or old age. Ozpin can't kill her, nor can anyone else, when Jinn said, "You can't" she wasn't saying Ozpin specifically can't, she meant as a royal You, as in humanity can't do anything to snuff her out. Now we know why characters who know the situation are more afraid of her - even joined her cause - and have defected from Oz's cause, it's a seemingly hopeless situation, and this revelation will have major repercussions on our cast and their morale.
    The story of the Maidens as we know it still remains the same, Ozpin still entrusted a significant amount of magic to the Four Maidens. We could see Oz and Salem's children as a precursor to what the Maidens would be.
    Yes, we even got to see what happened to the Moon, the lingering question that everyone has been wondering about since the beginning, that being the result of the God of Darkness' departure from the world, this revelation was even alluded to in the Opening for this very Volume. Another amazing touch is that the dragon forms of the Gods, the God of Darkness takes on the shape of the western interpretation of a dragon, while the God of Light has the form of an eastern interpretation of a dragon.
    We also met Little Miss Malachite, based on Little Miss Muffet, and mother to the Malachite twins, the duo from the Yellow Trailer at Junior's club.
    The new smaller Grimm in the first chapter were actually designed by a fan who got brought on to the crew as a Grimm designer, the smaller Grimm are called Manticores, while the biggest one is called the Sphinx, which is featured on the poster for this Volume!
    Oh, and just one more thing, Dee and Dudley are based on Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum from Alice in Wonderland.
    Sorry for another long-winded comment, there's just so much to cover on this one!

    I'm just gonna rant a bit about one of my favorite little details in the third episode, specifically Ozma's reply to the God of Light at 56:59. His immediate reaction being "I'll do it" is almost exactly like when Pyrrha was first asked to be the Fall maiden. I only caught it when rewatching the series sometime after this season ended, but when he said that line during my rewatch it hit me like a hammer.
    When put in this heavy situation where a great burden is being placed on you and you alone, for the sake of all humanity nonetheless, Ozpin and Pyrrha were very similar in their instinctive reaction of "I'll do it". Despite the potential danger, pain, and suffering it may inevitably cause them down the line, neither of them hesitated for a second.
    I also think that's why Ozpin had an almost worried look on his face when she said yes so fast, because he had done the same thing. And while he's definitely helped humanity on the way, he's suffered literal LIFETIMES of struggle and pain to do it. I feel like he wanted her to take that extra time to decide because he knew from experience that it wasn't going to be an easy and happy life if she did.
    Sorry for the mini essay on such a small thing lol. That moment just made me realize how much of a huntsman/huntress both Pyrrha and Ozpin really are deep down, and also made me appreciate them both that much more.

    - Do want to point out that once again "control" (directly mentioned) and "power" being at Adam's core
    - I absolutely LOVE Ilia's new outfit, its just so good. Also in another universe where Blake never left the WF or never met/bonded with Yang, I could totally see Catmeleon (Ilia/Blake) being a thing xD "wrong tree" cause Ilia is a lesbian xD
    - Sun is a legit bro and I'm so glad he and Blake settled into brotp territory. Both cause it fits for the characters and it subverting the idea of different gendered dynamics always going romantic over platonic.
    - Blake zoned out -> hears Yang's voice and snaps back to paying attention. Also the way the animators put the brightening sun behind Yang, subtle but telling xD
    - I'll just say that there was something mentioned about the train's caboose
    - The bigger grimm = Sphinx; the smaller minion types = Manticores
    - Yang taking the Manticore by its horns and overpowering it is peak badass
    - Bees teasing Weiss is peak comedy xD
    - I LOVE Maria, that's all I'll say xD
    - Welcome to the deeper lore elements of the universe xD
    - Brother gods are assholes, like Salem isn't in the right either but they definitely could've handled things way better. Shown even an ounce of sympathy towards her.
    - As for humanity returning (my interpretation cause I'm not sure if the writers have said canonically or not): basically The Brother of Dark wiped out the current humans; however the ingredients still existed to lead to a next generation of them to evolve. Like if someone killed all the Earth's population, yet left the primordial elements that led to humans origin species that would do so again (in Remnants case minus the infinite magic element). A huge time-skip happened that allowed said evolution to occur back to having the "new humanity".
    - Something pointed out to me that I never thought of is how Dust is the remnants of "old humanity" that had magic and semblances are basically the heavily dialed down remnant of magic of "old humanity".
    Welcome to v6 xD

Cinder specifically notes how special the Vault of the Spring Maiden is and within it we have a tree at the back of a circular chamber with water at the bottom. The God of Light's domain is shaped in the same manner and the tree in the Vault blooms with streaming petals the same way that the tree in the domain does.
      We know the God of Darkness's realm still exists, so it's fair to assume the God of Light's does too and we've seen the terrain around it is mountainous, just like Mistral - building atop the old domain would have helped further hide that history, so I theorize that it was the original Domain of Light. With the thin walls that allowed Cinder to break out of the Vault, it is likely the original waters would have drained out and the pool is therefore no longer full of "make you immortal" juice.

    What really bothers me about the whole “humanity needs to be united/treat each other fairly or it’ll be wiped out again” thing is that humanity was originally wiped out BECAUSE they banded together and decided they wanted to remove the gods from power…
    And to make matters worse, humanity is only as divided as it is now because of Salem… who wouldn’t be there to influence human history in the first place if the gods hadn’t decided to make her immortal… kinda makes it feel like the gods want Oz to fail and having him come back at all was just another way to hurt Salem.

    29:28 I've seen other reactors assume Yang didn't tell everyone that Raven is the Spring Maiden just because we didn't specifically see her tell them, but I think that's a poor assumption, and based on how they talk about how the Spring Maiden isn't around to seal the relic back in the vault, it's more correct to assume Yang did tell them. I mean we didn't get to see the team filling Blake in on all that transpired either, but it's obvious they had. Two weeks have passed, let's assume everyone is caught up.

    • @KitsyX
      @KitsyX 2 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure that it's any more correct to assume she did tell them... I mean, they mention the "spring maiden" and not "Raven, the spring maiden"... Also, when Yang rejoined them after getting the relic, she was somewhat vague to Qrow about what happened... This arguably suggests that she wanted to keep at least part of what happened private...
      But of course we have no real way to tell which might actually be true, so it could be either... Unless they've said at a panel that I haven't heard about... Yang does tend to be pretty straight forward, but then again, she doesn't seem to always fully let people in to see her more vulnerable side, if she can help it...
      But yeah, I don't think we should assume either way.

    • @BlueButterfly015
      @BlueButterfly015 2 роки тому +3

      @@KitsyX the thing is, when Yang was first asked about it, it was right after the big fight where A LOT happened in a short period of time. Everyone was physically and emotionally exhausted so I would argue that it was not the time for any more emotional bomb shells, especially since it is such a sensitive issue for both Yang and Qrow. That could also explain why no one mentions her by name afterwards, sensitive subject.
      Plus afterwards, it’s no longer relevant who the Spring Maiden is, now that the Lamp of Knowledge is out in the open. And despite all the speculation, Raven is too much of a coward now to just suddenly show up again. It’ll happen eventually, and we will finally have that clarification on who knows what, but it probably won’t be for a while, so for the time being it is literally a non-issue whether anyone else knows or not, so there’s no reason for people to get on Yang’s case or call her a hypocrite. It’s precisely because of Raven’s own lies and half-truths that Yang now takes such an issue with everyone else keeping important, relevant information secret.

    • @toneDef77
      @toneDef77 2 роки тому +1

       @KitsyX I agree it's unknown, I guess I shouldn't have said it would be "more correct to assume she did tell them", as we have no information in the show or otherwise as of yet to inform us. Just knowing Yang's character and straightforwardness, coupled with what @BlueButterfly15 mentioned about the brevity of Yang's comments after a very long fight, leads me personally to believe she had to have mentioned it. Two weeks have passed between that and when the crew is at the train station, so surely there's been more discussion of all that happened. Blake would have so many questions, and as both sides said, it was a long story. I also feel Yang would want to tell Qrow especially given the crew will never know when they may run into Raven again, and having knowledge that they would be running into a maiden when seeing her would be crucial to have, especially given that Qrow is one of the people Raven can portal directly to.

    Without exaggeration, I truly believe The Lost Fable to be RWBY's best episode. With the expert storytelling, phenomenal character writing, astounding visuals, voice acting, soundtrack, and the way it recontextualizes the entirety of the series that came before it as well as the rest to come in the future, it's just absolutely perfect. It explains everything we've come to know and even gives us some possible hints for the future (you pointed out the wording of Djinn's final line about Oz being unable to destroy Salem). This is, imo, the pinnacle of the series. And while overall I feel each season is better than the last, this episode has yet to be beaten for me even by anything in Volumes 7 or 8 (though who knows with the upcoming Volume 9).
    One of my favorite things is how you INSTANTLY understand that the four daughters of Oz & Salem are the original maidens and that the "wizard gifting the maidens his powers" is explained by him & Salem giving birth to them, inheriting their magic (and clearly inheriting a form of Oz's regenerative curse by having their "maiden powers" seek out a new host upon death, just as Oz's soul does). It doesn't tell you this at all, but the instant you see the girls appear in the portrait, all the information you need is conveyed. If that's not one of the greatest examples of "show, don't tell" you've ever seen, nothing is. It's storytelling perfection.
    The concept of the Big Bad and Big Good characters having been together is by no means original, having been done in MANY other pieces of media throughout the years. But the way it's executed here is perfectly set up by everything that built up to it, and is written in a way (and with a quality) I haven't seen from pretty much any other sources. It's believable, tragic, intense, and gripping. And it's understood that even with it giving us an understanding of Salem's motivations, we still get that she's undeniably evil. That her actions are wrong. The pool of darkness corrupted her already selfish, arrogant mind to turn her into a maniacal psychopath with intense anger & a God-complex.
    But the single best thing that comes from this episode, imo, is the fact that it completely recontextualizes Salem as a character. Prior to this we see her as this vile, evil, irredeemable villain who's just the pure embodiment of darkness (outside of the God of course, lol). We see her as inhuman. But this episode shows us that Salem is intensely human. Maybe one of the most human people in this series. Her anger, selfishness, arrogance, sadness, etc are all as human as it gets. Her motivations & fears, her goals & plans. All of it is built on the back of her human emotion. Despite trying to be otherwise. Despite becoming the "witch", she remains the human who tried to fight the balance of life. Cursed with immortality & darkness, but human none-the-less.
    My theory with this episode in regards to what Salem's goal is currently with trying to gather the relics is that she wants to summon the Gods prematurely while sowing as much discontent in humanity as possible. She wants humanity to be broken, hoping that by bringing the Gods back, she'll be wiped out with the rest of it. Finally gaining her freedom, something she highly values, from the painful immortality she was cursed with. She's suicidal, but also vengeful enough to want to bring the rest of humanity down with her. She just wants it all to be over. Of course, we don't know that for sure here, but it's been my theory since I first saw this episode when it initially aired.
    Either way, this is a true masterclass in storytelling that makes me overjoyed to have discovered this series when I did. I found & began watching it before Volume 3 began, so I've been with it as it aired from three onward. And although it's not a perfect series or anything, the positives very much outweigh the negatives. And episodes like this are what keep me coming back, and keep me as a true fan of this series.

    i really love how you gave time to unpacking and reacting to the opener this volume! rewatching the openers after seeing the full volumes are really a different experience because it really does lay out the entire volume for you in the opener without you even realizing. especially in later volume, its… it’s literally all there… the whole volume… they hand it to you on a silver platter and you don’t even know it until you watch the volume and go back. i think after you finish reacting to what we have so far of rwby, you should consider doing a video of you going back and rewatching the openers and unpacking them to just really see how much information is packed into them whether it’s directly in the visuals or the effects, or the details, or timings or something in the background. it really is a whole other experience. it could be things as obvious as the visual of ilia teaming up with and being pressured by the white fang in volume 5 throughout the volume or small things like in the volume 6 opener how they use blue smoke to transition at one point much like jinn’s smoke. i’ll admit earlier volumes openers don’t go as in depth as the later ones but that’s just one of the things that i love so much about the later volumes is their openers. the openers get significantly longer as you move through the volumes but oh boy does it pay off.
    (ps- don’t know if you caught it but the statue that you were obsessing over in volume 5 was a statue of jinn! fitting since the statue is what hid the relic that jinn resides in.)
    i love these videos i can’t wait to see more!!! also, if you haven’t already seen league of legend’s “arcane” i’d like to formally and kindly put it in your head that you react to that series. it is CRAZY in its quality and there is a very big and very real rwby to arcane pipeline within the rwby community and you’ve undoubtedly gained a huge following and traction within the rwby community. obviously you have many other groups and audiences to cater to but, i’d just figure i’d throw it out there in the event you’d want to feed the hungry hungry hippos that is rwby fans, haha! again, keep up the good work, i look forward to these reactions every week and i cannot put into words how excited i am for volumes 7 and 8 because i personally can never chose a favorite seeing as how little time (canonically) there is between these three volumes it all just feels like one big volume and THAT volume is my favorite, haha.

    • @chb2551
      @chb2551 2 роки тому

      Yes they are the first maidens. They wouldn't be wearing the colors of the maidens and be able to perform magic so easily if they weren't maidens. Ozpin lied about them just like he lied about everything else. When the children died, their powers passed on to other girls for the maidens. Remember, the fairy tales are "based on" actual happenings. They're not the way things actually happened.
      Why would you trust Ozpin to tell the real story when he's lied about everything else? He lied about his soul moving on to another person being a "curse." He volunteered, he wasn't cursed. It was a gift that he accepted. When talking about the maidens, he said that he gave them his power. Technically he and Salem both gave the maidens their powers. That's why they're so powerful. If Ozpin couldn't defeat Cinder, yet he gave them their powers, then that makes no sense. If they got powers from both Salem and Ozpin, that explains why she was able to overpower Ozpin so handily. He wasn't only facing off against the power he had given but was also facing off against the powers that Salem had given them.
      That's also why Salem is so interested in gaining someone who can wield all of the maiden's powers. They'd be stronger than both Ozpin and Salem. Ozpin did kill Salem in their fight, after all. So clearly he was the stronger of the two. She just reconstituted with her full powers, though. That's the only reason why he lost in the end. And I won't get into massive spoilers (from V8) in order to continue the reasons why I believe that they were the maidens.

    the thing with Yang being angry at Oz for lying is that his lies are putting lives at stake, including theirs. Yang not bringing up that Raven is the Maiden when the Vault is open and she's gone doesn't really matter to anyone except Yang at this point, and she's not one to talk about her own personal issues most of the time. that was Yang's whole issue in the first place with Oz - he's asking them to risk it all and hiding a lot of (incredibly relevant) big world secrets and demanding they follow him blindly.
    Plus Oz is an unfathomably old immortal and Yang's still 18/19-ish - she can be forgiven for needing time to deal with the reopened wounds of her birth mother leaving her behind again. Oz is shirking his responsibilities by telling lies that endanger them and innocents, all over thousand year old hurt feelings
    ultimately, Yang is understandable, Oz is being selfish and paranoid and gambling with the lives of hundreds without telling anyone

    • @KitsyX

      Knowing who the spring maiden is could have been vital information... Knowing it was Raven might have helped them track her down then lock the relic back in the Haven vault, which might have been safer... Arguably it might have been incredibly hard to track her down though... I don't know... But I wouldn't say there was no use in the others knowing some of the details... And possibly Yang told them off-screen, although it seems implied that she didn't...
      Also, I don't think this is purely Oz being paranoid and hung up on stuff from maybe 1000 years ago... We haven't seen everything... We don't know how many people betrayed him and how recently... Sure, he's potentially risking their lives, but their lives are at risk regardless, if Salem gets her way... With how Grimm are affected by negative emotions, I think Oz had valid concerns... We also don't know how much the relic attracts the grimm, it might not have been a real problem until they needed to get away from them... Maybe he's putting them at risk for what he sees as the greater benefit to everyone... And he's just in the right as Yang not to have to bring up all the details of his relationship with Salem and the trauma it caused him...
      There's a lot of things at play... I don't think you're wrong to defend Yang, but I do think you're judging Oz too harshly... Not to say he doesn't have faults, but I'd argue that they are understandable, given what he's been through... Possibly the other stuff we don't know about to... He must have lost other families and friends over the many years... How much does he blame that on himself? We know he blames a lot on himself... He's trying his best, but whether his best is what's right, who knows?

      i always thought that Yang didn't even really need to say it because it was kinda obvious after the battle was over? I mean think about it, Cinder is presumed dead bc otherwise Yang wouldn't have just simple walked out w the relic, Vernal is told to be dead so even if she actually WAS the maiden then it would be easy to assume that when Cinder killed her the power went to Raven (again, this is if they assume that Vernal wasnt a decoy) So no matter what, it always leads to the conclusion that Raven is the maiden and ran away. It's not even necessary for Yang to say it because if any of the characters think about it for like 2 seconds, they'd figure it out.

That don't specify if it's 100 years per question or whether the 3 questions reset all together at a set date, every 100 years...But yeah... Maybe he was being misleading with what he said and how he said it, but each statement was true on its own... That would fit his patterns more, I think...

Notice how when the gods kill someone at any time in this episode they leave behind a physical dust/ash. The dust remains of humanity basically coated the entire surface of the planet, so the animals leftover where not only being exposed to that dust but eating it and eating the plants that grew from it. Notice how faunus - humanoids with animal traits - only exist in the second version of humanity? I've spent years analyzing this and the only thing that makes sense is the animals that consumed the remains of the first version of humanity basically consumed the magical blueprints for evolving into a human, cause remember the first version of humanity was created by the gods out of magic. So it tracks that the animals consumed those magical blueprints and that pushed their evolution to re-evolve into humanoids, and the humans that DONT have animal traits are the most RECENT evolution. This fits with everything we here in the Dust world of remnant episode and with the themes in the in-universe fairytale the shallow sea which implies all humans where originally faunus. And then the dust from the first version of humanity was still leftover, and over those millions of years that organic magical material got COMPRESSED INTO CRYSTALLINE FORM. Notice in this episode, dust crystals are also a completely new thing that ozma had never seen before just like the faunus. Dust crystals are literally the compressed remains of their ancient ancestors and they have no idea, that's why the end of the dust episode of world of remnant is so ominous.

      There is a cultural memory in faunua culture that they came first somehow that translates in the Shallow Sea fairytale - which also has themes of animals and humans being merged together by the magic of the gods. But this cultural memory is also reflected in Adams speech about how they're the "dominant species of the planet". He seems to be using the cultural memory that faunus came first to justify his extremism

    There are a million questions. Luckily I have about a thousand answers..ha in joke.
    Ok so Remember Salem's speech at the start of the show. Man born from dust.
    Humanity was reborn from the ashes of those left behind through the natural process of evolution combined with the remnants of magic left within that dust. More or less speeding up the process. But magic was nearly entirely lost. Aura and semblance being a literal sembalance of the magic left attached to the soul that all humans once wielded.
    Jinn is the statue in volume 5.
    Keep in mind the signs by Cinder vs the time mentioned by Qrow. The events occurring with Cinder are at least a couple weeks ahead of what team RWBY and co are doing. Two of the kids in one of Ozma's incarnations have silver eyes despite neither parent having them. Could Ozma and any kids he has and decendants he has be the source of silver eyes?
    The four children Ozma and Salem had inspired him to turn those 4 sisters he meets centuries later to become the maidens after he reached a point of giving up. As Ozma has had many cycles of life where he gave up the never ending fight and lived in solitude.
    The form of the dragons the gods took match the look of the dark continent Salem lives on and of Anima where Mistral sits.
    Blake is blaming herself over Yang's arm and trying to make up for it. But Yang is over it. In the train you can see Yang reading a magizine showing new arm models.
    Lil Miss Malachite is the mother of the twins in Junior's bar that Yang smashed up. But Junior isn't the dad.

    Maidens reincarnated like Dad, but have magic potential like Mom (enforced by Old Wizard/Oz the Recluse). Salem can't be destroyed as long as Remnant planet exists, BUT she might be REDEEMED by a certain simple soul (this is speculation). The Matrix(or DNA) that originally created the world of Remnant probably allowed accellerated evolution of Humans 2.0 from animal life (millions of years development in only a few hundred) and maybe allowed for Faunus as a deviation subspecies. A troublesome possibility is that the original magical humans were reduced to dust particles (humans were created from dust as explained in vol 1 ch1 intro) which provide the interesting abilities - which means they're burning up their ancestor race when they use it. Also I speculate the "gods" are descendants of super advanced Humans from Earth who colonized and terraformed the galaxy - that's how the myth/fairy tale/meme association comes about - it's cultural memories being remembered and reimagined. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this story. 😜
