Watching this in 2024 and hard to believe a show airing 60+ years ago (a decade before I was even born) is actually relatable....Having young adult daughters (now 24, 21 yrs old) who've left the nest to college far away, who returned only to spend all their time at home with friends and leave us, the parents and youngest sibling, waiting to see if we'll even get time with them during their visit....I guess some themes are timeless and that's what makes this show a classic
I am 50, going on 51 (as of 2024). Back in the 80s/90s when I watched many reruns from the 50s/60s, I used to think that all shows went to color by 1965. This confirms that I was absolutely wrong! Not that I've never seen reruns of the Donna Reed show; just I've never seen any of the last 2 seasons.
Really wonderful to see a season six episode of this series. For some unknown reason the estate of Donna Reed has withheld all but two of season six, all of season seven and a couple of season eight episodes from the public. All episodes from seasons 6, 7 and 8 have been withheld from DVD release. Wish I knew why, because it's such a great show. It's also a fact that the series achieved its highest ratings during season six. Thank you so much for posting this!
Donna Reed’s estate only controls seasons 1-5. Her original contract, covering the first five seasons of the show, stated that control of those episodes would revert to her after a certain number of years. When she renewed her contract for seasons 6-8, that provision was no longer in the contract, so seasons 6-8 are controlled by Sony, the successor to Screen Gems. It’s a pretty unusual situation. But if you check out the copyright notice under the show’s title, the first five seasons are copyrighted by “Todon of California” (Reed’s production company with her husband tony Owens), and the remaining seasons are copyrighted by Screen Gems. When Columbia (Screen Gems) still controlled the entire series, they syndicated seasons 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8. I heard that when they cut down the syndication package to an acceptable number of episodes for local stations, they removed the Bob Crane episodes because they just didn’t like him. But I don’t know how much stock you can put into that. After Reed’s estate regained control, they leased seasons 1-5 to MeTV and then to Decades (Decades currently also leases season 8 from Sony). I assume these days, if they aired seasons 6-7, they’d owe residuals to the actors since those episodes have rarely been rerun, and Sony just doesn’t want to bother with it.
@@jaredjlinden Thank you so much for that information. I guess the only way Screen Gems might bother releasing those seasons would be if there were enough public demand for it. I wish there were, as I love the cast and the show and have never seen those episodes. Still, I'm hoping that one day it happens. 🤞
@Eleanor Florist That certainly is an interesting theory, but Bob Crane also appeared in season 5 of Donna's show, so why allow those to be released? Also, Hogan's Heroes is a huge success in syndication to this day, which I think may be counter to your theory. If you look in the comments, someone explained that Reed's family only owned the first five seasons. When it came time to renegotiate the contracts after deciding to continue for a sixth season and beyond, that ownership clause wasn't put in for some reason. Apparently, Sony/Screen Gems retains the rights to the last three seasons and they don't seem to be in any hurry to release these later seasons, if at all. I'm guessing perhaps they would if there was a demand for them. I know I'd love to see them.
I'm watching on streaming now and see that only seasons 1-5 are available. The series aired on Nick at Nite from 1985-94. Did Nick air all 8 seasons back in the day and if so I wonder if anyone recorded seasons 6-8? Would love to see the entire series
Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been trying to find episodes after season 5. I was hoping they would put 6-8 on DVD, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening.
I LOVE the Donna Reed Show. It is hands down my favorite of the classic family shows because it was different. Donna and Alex were not as conservative minded when it came to parenting their children, yet they were awesome parents. They weren’t overly strict, yet weren’t too permissive either. I like that Donna had a career prior to marrying Alex and chose to be a stay-at-home mom when they married. But Alex wasn’t the type to actually force her hand either. You get the feeling that he would not have cared if she worked. I remember in the later years, Donna spent more time outside of the home since the kids were older anyway. The show seemed to have a good balance of stories between the characters also.
I love "Leave It to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best," but "The Donna Reed Show" was for me the best as well. The Stones seemed like a real family, and they were all so good in their roles. It's my comfort go-to show. I would love to see more episodes from seasons 6, 7 and 8, but seasons 1-5 were the best in my opinion anyway because Mary was more of a regular.

Her brother was right to intercede.
Good times❤
This is the intro for Season 8, not 6.
so true .. my bothers & sister did the same ..then when my lids grew up they too did the same . Wish the show used adopt needy children , Please if you want to Have & raise & and love children ..please adopt them from the 10`s of thousands poor children with no families ..Thousand children die each day from over population . So use birth control and adopt...70 % of planets species of plants and animals are gone from crowding out of humans
We all made this mistake first time home
This was the November 7rh 1963 episode
That's the biggest "attic" I've ever seen!
Does anyone remember an episode where Jeff has a friend who is having a drug problem and asks Alex for prescriptions? Looking for it
Early season 8. I remember the episode...Donna talks to him while he is in jail. Season 8 Episode 10 "The BIg League Shock"

Did Donna Reed wear a wig for this show ? It seems her hair is different as what it looked like in her old movies
She colored her hair early in her career, then dyed it back.
Hairspray. Lots of it.
Who's the little girl?
That’s Trisha. (Played by Patty Petersen, Paul Petersen’s sister) She was a little girl who follows them home in an episode in season 5. She lived with her uncle. She was allowed to stay with them. They end up adopting her.
It’s their daughter not a friend or extended family member. I understand freshening up her bed and getting her part of the room ready but all the other hullabaloo? It’s unnecessary
There are lots of Moms that would do that @Northern Most Snapps!
Their daughter whom they greatly missed. Families back then actually acted like families. A friend of mine cries when her daughter goes back to college..
Paul and his sister were so cute! Why is she sitting on a highchair? What were they going to do with her if everyone but her was going to the party?
You think the Queen 👑 was coming for a visit.
Some families TREAT each other like they ARE special.
Mary kind of was tho...
I just can't relate to them anymore.
Not one did wash. Grab food and gobble food down the throat. Sad! 3-22-2022
Damn… she’s such a babe…😍😍😍😍
❤
Compare the disrespectful brats on shows like roseanne and married with children, this is what current young people think are funny. The fathers are portrayed as idiots and the grandparents as old irrelevant people. This sadly mirrors today!! Families are not the center of kids lives their friends and cell phones are!!
I watched this show when I was a kid, but it seems different now. Too much talking, and too fast-paced. Makes me feel a little sad that I don't like it as much.
They talk so fast. To much dialogue crammed in. More Donna Reed in a bikini.
That is all!
Donna Reed was too old to be in a bikini. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Shelley Fabares' character talked fast. The rest were talked at normal pace.
