I lived in two apartments in a Victorian. Freezing in winter, sweltering in summer. But I felt blessed. Clearing the snow off my car after a storm…I was Mary.❤
@cristleheart4266 She was the best! I still wish I had a best friend like Rhoda. Rhoda was always my favorite TV character and Valerie Harper was always my favorite actress! ❤
I haven't seen these for a long time and they reconfirm what I thought years ago: this is one of the best comedies ever made. Why? Because there is a solid emotional core to each one. When Rhoda wins the beauty pageant, you feel the pain of her low self-esteem and then reluctant self-love. When Edie leaves Lou, you feel Lou's anger and hurt and then the gradual acceptance. There is an emotional arc to each story based in reality. Most comedies are just gags. Here, the comedy comes right out of the person. A gag is something any character could say; a good joke is something that could only come out of a specific character. Acting is great. Comic timing is fantastic. Wow. I miss shows like this.
Agreed 💯 these were some of the best actors to exist on television, I mean they were perfect. Such good writers too. James Brooks’ CV is a mile long of great movies and shows and the other writers Silverman, Burns, Weinberger etc etc. TV was so different back then too. I am GenX but I call it the TV generation. As a kid I watched TV as much as we could with our 4 tv channels. We would plan our days and nights around TV before VCRs, DVDs, streaming and on demand. Now I am a Gramma I can watch this show and many others over and over again. as I have aged it is comforting to have that nostalgic feeling and think about younger days.
Rhoda in the contest is my favorite episode. Mary has more laugh lines because Rhoda was being featured. And Phyills's song was off the charts great. The whole episode is so well done.
WoW, must have been the beginning of Fred Grandy career, him and Galvin Macleod later to work on the Love Boat. Every single cast member went on to act in their own shows including RIP, John Amos as (Gordy ) in Good Times.
I don't know why they brought that character in, to replace Rhoda and Phyllis, two outstandingly different characters. Poor Georgette's character was beyond dull, in my opinion.
I never liked the choice of wording "you are now a great looking girl". Now? She always has been. And I think Rhoda was way prettier than Mary, anyway.
They did exactly what they did with Brenda in her spin-off here on MTM, she was never big! Brenda was never big! They just had them in larger clothes and then put them in clothes that actually fit and NOW they're gorgeous! Both were stunning from the beginning of their respective series!
This weight obsession is ridiculous. What is Rhoda complaining about? The only difference between she and Mary, at this point, is a slight difference in height, and Rhoda’s baggy dress, v Mary’s tight fitting tee😒
Terrific directing, writing; acting, costumes, content, etc. An all around great show.
Growing up I pictured myself having an apartment like Mary or Rhoda. Then I grew up.
I know, me too and a friend like Rhoda!!! There is something so comforting about all of it!
I was so disappointed my apartment didn’t look like hers…but I did end up with a Mustang!!!

I always thought Rhoda was beautiful and funny!! She played her character very well!

Love Mary and the whole cast
It was a fantastic cast.
***Love, Love, Love Rhoda❤. It was Never the same after she left. 😢
Yes, Georgette was just not as interesting.

Phyllis sure is a good comedian
Anyone watching in 2025? ❤️
Yes, I am❤
Love this sitcom ❤
Today everybody eats alone everybody
Go Phylis!
I actually grew up and had an apartment a lot like Mary's
New sub here, I miss these older shows 😊
I never liked the choice of wording "you are now a great looking girl". Now? She always has been. And I think Rhoda was way prettier than Mary, anyway.
I was JUST thinking the same thing!
Finally they let her look good like she should have nice clothes
That beige maxi dress🙌🙌🙌
Too bad they cut out the ends of each episode. Please don't do that.
I always hated the way they put Rhoda down. Both women were very attractive and Rhoda was never fat! 20 pounds ! That's nothing!
They did exactly what they did with Brenda in her spin-off here on MTM, she was never big! Brenda was never big! They just had them in larger clothes and then put them in clothes that actually fit and NOW they're gorgeous! Both were stunning from the beginning of their respective series!
Her brother -in -law!
Weird to see Mary kissing her past husband Rob’s brother.
To put in perspective why Murray was so aghast about Ted's raise; in today's economy Ted Baxter would be making around $186,000 a year. 💰💸🤑
