- For as long as he can remember, David Stephens has always loved puppets - more specifically, Muppets.
Stephens, 47, lives in Silverhill, Alabama. He learned to sew from his seamstress neighbor when he was 13 so he could make puppets of his own. After graduating high school, he enrolled in Troy University’s theater program.
He went on to pursue a degree many folks probably haven’t heard of - a Master’s of Arts in Puppet Arts - from the University of Connecticut. It is the only program of its kind in the U.S.
After graduating, Stephens worked with the Center for Puppetry Arts in downtown Atlanta on a freelance basis.
He was discovered by the Henson family, specifically Heather Henson, Jim Henson’s youngest daughter, during his time in Atlanta.
That experience got Stephens in the door for a world of puppetry he never imagined he would be a part of. Eventually, he made his way to New York, where he worked on the set of Sesame Street,
Since then, he has performed in theaters all over the U.S., taught classes about how to make puppets and created solo-shows.
Stephens also started selling some of the puppets he creates through his All Hands Productions company. #crafting #handmade #jimhenson #muppets #madeinalabama #sesamestreet #puppetshow
