MissLizaMay I am still trying to figure out how he did. This always make me tear up. Thank you, Mr. Spinney (Big Bird) and Mr. Henson (Kermit the Frog).
I've had the pleasure of meeting Caroll on several occasions. He was and still Is a wonderful man with time to listen to, and a kind word for everyone. a sadly dying breed that man
I was an adult when Sesame Street came along and it was something everyone should have as a life experience. Before Sesame Street, there was "Manah Manah;" I think you can find it on UA-cam. I was a little younger then.
Somebody give Caroll Spinney a frigging medal, man. I could hear him sobbing a bit in his rendition, which in turn made the moment all the more emotional. Hell, this even tore me up a little, and I'm notorious for being Daria-levels of cynical. And why not, Jim was one of my main influences growing up, and still is.
Caroll is a very emotional guy, too. If you haven't watched it, you should rent "I Am Big Bird" on youtube. We watched it last weekend, he's quite an amazing person.
@@miabia5525 I would imagine it would've been impossible for Carroll to sing it out of costume. If Will Lee's death was hard everyone, this was a whole different level.
Just as Caroll Spinney ended with, "Thank you, Kermit," today, afterwards I thought, "Thank you, Big Bird," for all the love you helped share throughout the years. Thank you both.
So sad & beautiful. Tears were already falling as Big Bird sang, but completely lost it when he said "thank you Kermit" at the end. I don't care what anyone says, but I know that I & a whole lot of other people were & are so fortunate to have grown up being exposed to Sesame Street & The Muppet Show. Thank you Jim Henson...
***** If you grew up in the 70s and 80s, you didn't make it through childhood unless the Muppets and Sesame Street were part of your daily existence. Such a legacy!
You can hear his voice breaking in the song at a few different points, it's a beautiful and heartbreaking rendition of the song. I'd like to believe they are up in Heaven together now singing this though.
I could tell that Caroll Spinney was fighting back tears during the song especially when he said "Thank you, Kermit". I feel so sorry for his loss at the time. But now he has reunited with Jim Henson. RIP to you both.
I'm just imagining that after Big Bird said "Thank you Kermit", he steps off stage and is comforted by both Maria and Snuffy as he breaks down in tears. And Maria gently is like "Shh. Just let it all out, Big Bird.".
listening to Big Bird sing this beautiful tribute to Jim Henson, I wanted to reach through the screen and hug him. You can feel the emotion he has when he is saying good-bye to his friend.
very true.. so nice song so many emotions about it about everyone who knew what jim did to us.. There is so many kids now and then whose life get lot smile and lot joy because he.. In world has so many bad man who want bad things to others.. and so few guys who try get better wheels to others so that why i like more henson than anyone bad guys
@@longtail4711 I agree. I have never been to a comfortable funeral. This moment wasn't comfortable.....it was Big Bird (and Carroll Spinney) mourning the loss of their friend and saying goodbye in a beautiful and heartfelt tribute.
I'm a hairy arsed trucker, covered in tattoos, and when I watched this, I was in floods. I'm 47, and just watched the box sets of the muppets, the ones that were released anyway, and I laughed so much. They take you away from reality, away from the stresses of life. They take you back to being a kid again. R. I. P. Mr Henson, and thank you for the muppets, for my childhood.
May 16, 1990: “Thank you, Kermit.” December 8, 2019: “Hi, Kermit.” I hope these two great friends have found each other again. Thank YOU Caroll Spinney, for so much.
Heard the news recently. Fighting back the tears, Carroll Spinney was a great man and part of mine and many others childhoods. At least he's in a better place and reunited with Jim and Mr. Hooper, the street won't be the same without him. R.I.P and Merry Christmas Mr. Spinney.
It was Bill Kopp and Savage Steve Holland who created the 'Eek the Cat' cartoon series; for the FOX network, MTV, CBBC & YTV. The 'Eek the Cat's cartoon series aired from September 12, 1992 to August 1, 1997.
Lost my dad many years ago (but after the loss of Jim Henson)...this hurts worse as my dad was not there for me unlike the many characters on Sesame Street. They were there for me everyday growing up and ALWAYS had encouraging words when I was feeling down.
Had to view this footage after hearing of the passing of Caroll Spinney today. Can't believe after nearly 30 years, Jim and Caroll can now entertain all those passing souls as partners once more. Yes, Big Bird, it's not easy being green. Yet you and Mr. Henson always made it easy to love you and all the characters you both brought to life. May we all meet you great souls one day. Now go have fun with Kermit and Snuffy, will ya?! 🇵🇷🇺🇸😪
I really wish Jim Henson was still here today. Our world just isn't the same. I was only 1 at the time of his passing but I'm so glad that I grew up with the Muppets and Big Bird :) I love the original Muppet movie from 1978. Poor Big Bird/Carroll, he just wanted to break down but mostly held it together. Thank you Mr. Henson.
Stephen. You have a LOT of catching up on the GREATNESS of what you are witnessing. I've been watching Sesame Steeet since it first started coming on television. My greatest moments. My greatest regrets. Sesame Street covered ALL of it. If you can, binge watch...(it sounds really corny, but trust me...you'll thank me!!)
i did notice at the begining Big Bird could pull him together but later he begins to cry and i know how hard it is to still go on losing a friend that you know and my heart and my eyes were in tears when he said Thank You Kermit as he looked up i still to this day say thank you kermit, and you too Jim Henson you will never be forgotten.
This performance means the world to me in so many, ways words can't describe. When I was 4 years old, I had cancer & the only thing I would watch was the Muppets & Sesame Street. Thanks to Jim Henson's creations, I never felt alone. These characters got me through a tough time in my life. I'm 33 now & till this day, I get emotional when I see Jim's characters, because they remind me that no matter whatever life may throw at you, there's still hope in the world that brings strength & happiness. Life's not easy, but we have to have bad day's to truly cherish the great day's. Thank you Jim& everyone that brings us joy today ❤
Wow. From my perspective, it was really touching of Caroll to not only sing that song for Jim, but also to don the costume of Big Bird, look up to the heavens and say “Thank you, Kermit” as his way of saying farewell to Jim too. RIP James “Jim” Henson (September 24, 1936 - May 16, 1990). You may be gone physically, but you’re still here in spirit and in our hearts and minds... forever. 😇🦅
+Abigail Watson At least Steve Whitmire is still doing a good job of voice performing Kermit, Rizzo, Statler, Beaker, Foo-Foo, Link Hogthrob and the Newsman, ever since 'Muppets Most Wanted' (2014).
53 years old, on a cold Saturday Morning in the U.K , with tears streaming down my Cheeks, the "Thank you Kermit" pushed me over the edge .... Thank you Jim Henson and the Muppet crew for making my childhood so memorable.
I'd imagine Elmo singing a meloncoly version of "Sunny Days" and then looking up and saying "Thank you Big Bird. *sniff* Thank you Oscar.". And then walk off stage struggling to keep it together.
@@supme7558 I think Matt Vogel sounds pretty good as Big Bird. It helps that he was Caroll Spinney's understudy for him since the early 2000s before taking over in 2018 .
If me crying like a little girl during this clip makes me less of a man, then I might as well change my name to Shirley. I actually met Mr. Spinney a day or two ago at a book signing and I refrained from asking him about this. Jim was an innovator, a man who helped shaped many people's childhoods even from beyond the grave. He was taken away from us much too soon.
Breaking down because of something specific like this means that if you had such a great childhood, then make your adulthood just as epic as you can.🤣😭
@@osco4311 UndeadPianist knows, Osco, that's why it's written in character as one of the cast gently setting Big Bird straight :) In the episode after Mr Hooper's death in which they explain that he died I think it may have been Susan who reminded Big Bird it was Hooper, not Looper? Maybe you remember for sure. I'm Australian and some people here (and throughout the Commonwealth) have strange, reductive ideas about Sesame Street. I feel privileged to have seen this work of collaborative genius between writers, consulting child psychologists, and the many varied performers & crew. It's where I first met New York (or a version thereof)! Brownstones and other quintessentially New York elements, varied cultural influences in the neighbourhood, how to deal with conflict & misunderstanding, how to be a good friend & neighbour. Also, psychedelic number songs! Intergalactic aliens flummoxed by terrestrial telecommunication! A huge cast of great characters, and so many beloved tiny infill segments :D
@@osco4311 I hope it didn't come across otherwise, Osco? It sounds like it may have, not at all what I intended. (Apols too for the absurdly overlong comment - that really got out of hand!)
60 years old and the muppets are still in my life. Kermit has always had pride of place in our living room. We dress him up up as Santa every Christmas. I dust him once a week.
Mr. Henson, on behalf of every person who ever had a smile brought to their face by your work, thank you. This world was a better place for having you in it.
+I'm not using my real name. Stop asking. it's really sad how Jim had to leave us and the stupid jerks/killers still get to live. :( I was a few weeks away from turning 1 on May 16th 1990. But seeing his work through the magic of UA-cam and DVD really brings a smile to my face and I don't care if I'm 26. Jim was a genius for creating the Muppets and especially Sesame Street. He would be so happy to know that it's still running strong after 46 years, and almost 5 generations of children have learned from it.
What caused Bill Kopp and Savage Steve Holland to create this 'Eek the Cat' Halloween episode; this is where Eek the cat slams the door on Mr. Fred Rogers' face, and runs off making the psychotic screech. Duane (Duane G. Shelton) gave me this answer about Bill Kopp and Savage Steve Holland; "they were raised in the world of mayhem."
You know at first one might think Caroll was probably acting by making Big Bird's voice quiver and crack, but when you really listen to it, its so evident that Caroll is truly trying his hardest not to break down.
Whoever disliked this has no heart.. It's a video of a very emotional tribute to a great and talented man who touched the hearts of many, not just children. Jim Henson's work continues to make many happy and teaches good lessons. Thank you Jim Henson for being who you were and for making many people happy, not just me.
Jim Henson was a genius. There's no other way to describe him. When I was a child, one of my favorite shows was Fraggle Rock. And only as I got older did I realize the messages it had taught me without me even realizing it. Don't get me wrong, I loved Sesame Street and The Muppet Show as much as the next guy, but Fraggle Rock was... special to me. It taught kids about important issues like love and the loss of loved ones, family and friends, death, life, looking past differences, understanding that we're all part of one another and even war and racism. Without sounding like an arrogant sod, I'd like to think I'm a decent person who treats people the way I would like to be treated. I'm not saying that Fraggle Rock is to thank for that, at least not completely. My friends and family, my parents and other good role models obviously take a good chunk of the credit. But I would be lying and doing Jim Henson a disservice if I didn't say he also had a large hand in shaping me into the person I am today. And if there truly is an afterlife, and I am judged worthy to enter it, I would love nothing more than to walk up to him, shake his hand and thank him. God bless you Jim Henson. The world is just a bit less bright without you.
Fraggle Rock really was amazing. I would honestly put it up there with Star Trek for being able to work complex morality questions into a show subtly enough to be effective.
+Jacob Padilla I'm certain they're referring to him dying too soon as horrible. You wanna talk respect? How about not cussing in a memorial tribute song?
I can’t believe that Carrol Spinney just died,at least he became the Parton Sesame Street for 50 years and he’ll be reunited with Jim Henson , Jerry Nelson and Will Lee who played Mr. Hooper. We will never forget you Carrol Spinney.( Big Bird and Oscar the grouch)
I hate to say it's perfect, but it's tragically so given the timing. I mean... This is someone who's been on Sesame Street since day one, he's seen 50 years of characters, children and friends coming and going, 50 years of memories and entertainment associated with it.
Oh my ... this one really got me ... Although I'm from Germany, I grew up with Sesame Street and later I watched the Muppets ... I'm 51 now but I still love to watch Sesame Street and the Muppets with my daughter ...
I was born in 1968. Sesame Street is responsible for all the success I have had in my life. Poor Big Bird - he was so upset..... RIP Mr Henson - you touched our lives and changed the world.
I have never seen this rendition but I'm already tearing up in the first 3 seconds. This song and people like Jim Henson, Mr. Rogers and LeVar Burton, etc... Have made an indelible mark on my life. So much more than entertainment. And it takes a lot of courage to not stifle your creativity.
Whats sad about this is its not Big Bird, its Jim Hensons mind coming to life. And Jim was a genius and watching Big Bird come out and sing that song, is like Jim talking to his friends and family. When you create a character and give it a voice, it comes to life and thats what Jim did. He brought imagination to life.
So true. And the thing is, he didn't just create one character: he created a race, a species. He created so many wonderful things, whether a giant yellow bird, a small green frog, a fraggle, a gorg, or a gelfling. No matter how old you are, everyone has a "Muppet" that they can relate to. When the people came to this memorial, they didn't just say goodbye to a creator, they said goodbye to a friend, a gifted man who didn't want fame or fortune. All he wanted was to share his imagination with the world. He did and, in a way, he's still sharing that.
Caroll Spinney must have been on another level of dedicated to wear the Big Bird outfit for Henson's memorial. But hey, Jim Henson not only created the Muppets, he was the Muppets. So he deserved it.
My first time watching in 2019 and of course crying for the loss of Jim Henson. I'm sorry you had to leave us. Thank you for everything you've done for our world. You bring joy to our hearts, you teach us equality, love and happiness. Thank you for touching our souls.
And sadly now Carroll himself has joined Jim in the big Muppet party upstairs. My childhood is weeping right now. I'm a 44 year old man shedding tears.
I cry every single time I watch this but it's so reassuring knowing that Jim Henson UA-cam threads are the only place in cyberspace where everyone gets along. That isn't a coincidence. Hensonites are wonderful people.
@Inverse I just saw this video and it's so sad! I grew up with Sesame Street in the 1980's when I was little and it hurts my heart to see Kermit's song performed by Big Bird! I was really sad when he passed away so long ago now and seeing this reminds me of such a better time in life! RIP Jim Henson! 💔🙏😰🐸 P.S. "Hi-Ho, Kermit the Frog here with another fast breaking news story!"
Wow. This is so sad. “One of a kind” is a cliche that gets thrown around a lot, but this man really singlehandedly changed children’s entertainment and education forever. An absolute gift from God that died way too young. Thank you Mr. Henson. Love and Respect.
I literally grew up on Muppets, Disney, Hannah-Barbara, Looney Tunes and all the great stuff back then! We need more of them today, instead of these shitty tween shows and sitcoms!!!!!!!
I grew up watching only Jim Henson. I learned my education from Sesame Street. I learned how to share from Fraggle Rock, I learned how to care, sing, dance, and make people happy from The Muppets, and I learned how to be dark but still have a light from the Dark Crystal. Now I'm teaching the little ones what I've learned and they are loving it. I cried so much when they asked me, "Why does Kermit sound so different now?" I said "Because he lost his voice." I'm not ready to tell them that my hero died.
And now Caroll Spinney and Jim Henson can continue their friendship in a much happier place. Rest easy Kermit. Rest easy Big Bird.

Despite the normally nasal tone of Big Bird, you can indeed hear Carroll Spinney's voice start to crack with grief. Jim Henson left us WAY too early.

And why not, Jim was one of my main influences growing up, and still is.
the "thank you kermit" topped it all off
The 'Daria'-level shocked me. The show only started to show her vulnerability in the final few episodes.

Caroll is a very emotional guy, too. If you haven't watched it, you should rent "I Am Big Bird" on youtube. We watched it last weekend, he's quite an amazing person.

Mad respect for his bravery singing at Jim Henson's funeral in the costume.

This is the saddest video on UA-cam.
You watch jacksfilms don't you... I saw you comment this
Holy fuck I also came here from Jacksfilms
Yep! I had the blues today at work because of this. It's Jacksfilms' fault!
It is the saddest video ever uploaded on UA-cam, because of the song Big Bird sang and the heartbreaking sound in his voice.
aldiakaroofus The Goodbye, Mr. Hooper Sesame Street episode is also incredibly sad. It features Big Bird.

Muppeteer Caroll Spinney said that he was crying inside the suit while he was singing this.
***** We're lucky to have grown up in an era when *Sesame Street* and *The Muppet Show* were the stuff of legend.
My thoughts exactly.....
when he said “thank you kermit” that’s what got me.
Damn. Right in the feels....the slight break in his voice. Got me good. *bawls eyes out*
And now we get to say thank Big Bird :(:(

I like what you said there at the end. It's a variation of what I say, you can't know true happiness without knowing true sorrow.❤
So happy you are doing well now. Glad these muppets help get you through some horrible times.😭💔❤️
Wow. From my perspective, it was really touching of Caroll to not only sing that song for Jim, but also to don the costume of Big Bird, look up to the heavens and say “Thank you, Kermit” as his way of saying farewell to Jim too.

They probably didn’t like it because it could’ve been to hard on them
Jim Henson was a genius.

Caroll Spinney just passed, and this was the first place I thought to come. I'll never forget it.
That was very beautifully said. I think Jim Henson himself would be moved that people understood his passion and his intentions as clearly as you do.
Big Bird was great here. I always said it would be a sad day when Carol Spinney died.
