This flick took EVERYONE (who actually went to see it) by surprise when it was first released. For my money, on a concept level it's one of the most original horror films of the past 20 years.
Agreed, though it is not really horror imo. It’s too meta to fit in the genre.
I think unfriended is more unique and orginal
@@maxducoudray all great horror movies have at least a bit of metaness to them.
@@MasteRgamer-mk5bp I guess to me this movie seems like it’s playing for laughs and is never actually trying to be scary.
I still remember watching it in theaters when it first came out the audience was amazing haha
the way Hannah recognizes the real symbolism like trying to make the protagonist seem more innocent is a talent 🤣🤣
Yeah, all I saw were panties
SYMBOLISMS!
Hannah is an actress so she’s familiar with the storytelling techniques filmmakers use
She's an actress so it makes sense

@@justtrustash And when will the 3rd part of the evil dead be?
One of my favorite bits of trivia about this film is that one of the big reasons Sigourney Weaver signed on was because she'd never worked with a werewolf before.
I always love when famous actors in genre movies actually turn out to be genre fans themselves
According to Kill Count she was like obsessed with it. She would constantly ask if the werewolf was there and hold its arm and walk around.
@@TenTonNukeshe’s so iconic
Ooohhh thats how Sigourney ended up in the Defenders2018
@@DerMoerpler i love how the best superman ever (henry Cavill) is a big world of warcraft nerd and warhammer haha
I always love people's reactions to the unicorn kill. It is made even more funny by the fact that a lot of the earliest myths about unicorns have them being quite violent creatures.
Unicorn were brought up becuz of ancient rhino fossils being found. Back then they only had 1 horn
I can’t believe how long Ash and Hannah kept believing their theory that this was a broadcast show. 😂
Honestly, that's not exactly wrong, lol. The old gods represent the typical horror movie audience. That's why it matters that these deaths follow all the expected tropes - if you have sex in a horror movie then you die first, there has to be a final girl, etc etc. Because that's what the audience wants, and the audience must be appeased.
They're not wrong to say that it was a broadcast show. Remember they even have one in different countries and languages. Except the audience are the Old Gods that just want to watch youngsters suffer in a specific way.
@@caggles I interpret this as a justification for why Horror movies are so tropey. This movie explains why every character in every classic American horror movie makes terrible decisions, like investigating the scream/sound/creepy cabin instead of running, and why there is always the 4-5 stereotypical victims. It's an homage to the Horror genre while also being a parody of the Horror genre at the same time. It also explains the regional horror tropes too... Japan having a Ringu girl, younger victims, no adult intervention, Sweden with it's natural disaster tropes, Argentina giant monsters trope.
Aztec style sacrifice to appease the gods or they awake. The blood is required, the Gods aren't watching the murders... they are sleeping.
Funny thing I recently learned about why the actor who plays Marty wears baggy clothes in the summer... They didn't think people would buy him as a nerdy stoner if people saw how ripped his muscles were. He was actually in as good or better shape as the other 2 actors.
false actually 🤓☝ it was widely known that the actor who played marty only agreed to this movie because he had never worn baggy clothes in the summer in a movie. he would always ask where the baggy clothes were and be seen walking around set holding his baggy clothes.
He has the best humble brag: "They wouldn't let me go shirtless in a movie because my abs would have distracted from Chris Hemsworth."
@@Grinix0Lmaooooo
When they talk about keeping the customers happy, they aren't just referring to the "old gods", they're also talking about us, the literal customers of this movie. It's meta.
Also, the guys with the saw blades in his head, holding a puzzle box, was a Hellraiser reference.
100% The viewers or rather the viewing public are the old gods who basically force the writers (all the adults) to contrive ridiculous plots to just satiate the viewers bloodlust and if they dont do so, their worlds end as in they dont get a paycheck lol.
Even shows how they have all the monsters and tropes in cages just ready to be deployed for whatever reason with damn no reason to it but some basic plot.
The Hellraiser guy actually has a name in the script- “Fornicus, Lord of Bondage and Pain” 😂
This movie is fun... It keeps you guessing for a while and then you realize they are just making fun of horror movie tropes. It adds a nice twist to the genre as well
Yeah always thought it was a scary move young, (I'm 24 now) saw it with my cousins a few weeks ago, it was definitely creepy n mysterious not what I was expecting tho I'd give it an 8/10 very fun movie.
it's one of my favorite movies, and I wish there were more movies like it
The rituals vary based on the individual cultures running the facility. The different monsters and victims are all different tropes from American pop culture. The Japanese facility would have monster choices based on Japanese folklore, the Swedish facility would have Norse folklore, etc. it’s all about the metaphor, they have strong cultures meaning and that’s why they matter to the Ancients
Funny thing about that example. The Swedish facility is a joking reference to the movie The Thing (1982), because Kurt Russel's character keeps referring to the Norwegians as "Swedish." The quick glance you get at the screen labelled Stockholm shows a building with a strong resemblance to the one in The Thing.
This movie is both a tribute and a parody at the same time, pretty impressive!
Like galaxy quest
An homage
symbolisms - We, the audience, are the giant old gods who demand the blood... who want the characters to die....who are there to watch them die violently. If we go to a horror movie, but there isnt any gore, we get upset. And the underground crew represents the filmmakers, who are trying to keep the audience happy.
Actually fucking big brain. And "the world being destroyed" is the film fails and they make no new movies. Genius.
The fact that the weed counteracted/deluded the impact of the the other drugs they were trying to dose them with is such an amusing concept 😂
The "Purge" scene is one of the most iconic scenes in the movie. What always stands out to me out of all the monsters tearing the soldiers apart is the witch that rips out a soldier's soul which I think is brilliant but also both disturbing and horrific.
Holy shit I never even noticed that, thanks!
And the Reever from Firefly throwing the soldier into the giant snake's mouth. 😅
This might be the only time Ash's "Symbolism!" has been correct.
😂😂😂 so true
@@justtrustashit's so funny that you actually got the satire, the criticism and meaning behind the characters being "sacrificial lambs", just meat to be sacrificed for the viewers pleasure with no character development past their archetype (virgin, cool jock, the fool, the smart guy with glasses and the sexy slut) but couldn't put it into words.
The movie is a satirical loving jab to horror tropes and the horror genre. The development of relationships is cut for the workers doing their job. Cuz you don't want that. You just want to see dumb people getting killed by a cool monster until the ONE likeable virgin is the survivor. Except this time she wasn't a virgin and she wasn't likeable. The "fool" was. So everyone's dead
The look of joy, then horror, as Hannah sees the unicorn….priceless:)
I live for that elevator bell "DING!!". One of my favorite love letters to the horror genre that has been made in the last 20 years. The other being "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon", which I would love to see you both review. Love your reviews so much!!
Me too haha!
When that bell dings, my brain turns into Rocket Raccoon when he says "Oh, yeah!"
I have never found another person in the wild who has seen Behind the Mask- I’m so excited! The only ppl I know who have ever seen it are ppl that I showed it to. CitW and BtM are my top two horror flicks also, I live for the meta/deconstruction aspects and they’re both so cleverly done.

I can't describe how much I love this movie. I begged my sister for literal years to watch it before she finally gave in and watched it with me. Of course, she loved it and watched it every day for like a week.

I remember taking my girlfriend to see this and everyone else, including her, were verbally disappointed when the credits started rolling. I loved it. The creativity, the originality, the subversion of expectations of horror, and the easter eggs were awesome. To this day, I still don't understand why people didn't enjoy the crap out of this film.
absolute no offense to your girlfriend or the audience but it takes a certain brain to enjoy this movie and think about it's parody and twists, i had to basically explain the whole movie to my girlfriend when we watched it , after the explanation she was in total shock and loved it (the ancient gods are us as a metaphor audience that want violence and stereotypes killed first) that explanation floored her but she loves it haha
I was a teenager in the 80s and had a healthy diet of nothing but horror, movies for a while, when I saw this movie theatrically I had a stupid grin on my face for the entire time. There are so many Easter eggs for us, hard-core horror fans.👍
One of the funniest and craziest comedy horror movies ever made! It's very meta!
This was originally going to have a 2009 release, but it was shelved for 2 years as MGM was filing for bankruptcy.
You two are such an adorable couple. I get a kick out of you two being horrified one moment and turn on with each other the next . It puts a smile on my face and gives me Faith in humanity. I love your Channel and I also love her Channel. As long as you both keep posting, I'll be fofollowing. Much love and respect to you both .
Thank you and appreciate you being on our channel mate ❤️👊🏽
I couldn't believe how much Ash's predictions continued to be incredibly on point - like him and Hannah switched places lol
He gets it right from time to time
Because Ash mentioned Supernatural repeated, I would absolutely LOVE to see Hannah react to that one day! I'm loving her GOT reactions! I can only imagine how she'd react to Supernatural! ♥
Didn’t even click that Chris Hemsworth was the jock boyfriend the first time I watched it. It’s a great movie that gives you a good dark comedy but is also an homage of horror.
Also Ash if you see this Sigourney was also excited to see the werewolf. She kept asking when she would see it.
This movie comes as a surprise, but a welcome one! You just want more of it, but there's no more movies like this. Some come close, like 13 ghosts or the spin off.
But this one is a unique and fun one!
Fan from Texas, USA. I can't wait to see this reaction!
"Yjue yjue yjueh..." " Are you okay?" actually laughed out loud. Love you guys
I hope they react to "Helluva Boss" soon. I feel like their reactions will be priceless.
Iam so glad I kept watching this movie...the first scenes I was like: "great, ANOTHER cliché horror movie" and then BANG...bird hits a force-shield😂😅
This movie could've been the 6th season of Angel had it not been canceled. Joss Whedon co-wrote it and I think he brought elements of the show's projected plot into the movie. Amy Acker is in both too and plays a similar character in Angel. Definitely feels like it's an extension of the Buffy-verse anyway.
Loved this film, so glad you enjoyed it - loved your reactions! You were really smart in figuring what was going on pretty early!
Fun fact: during the lake scene where they are all swimming Marty the stoner characters actor was so shredded they made him wear his shirt because it didn’t work for the stoner character. He even rivaled Chris hemsworths body
You two are so adorable together and so funny too..great reaction as always guys
"You must be having a sh*t on my face, what is this?!" LMAAAAO Hannah 😂 effortlessly funny 😂
That “thong” edit was hilarious 😂
This is such a fun horror flick! I watched it almost everyday for a while lol
I saw this film in college for the first time, we were covering the different types of horror genres and this was the "deconstructed" horror film. It was fantastic watching it use the classic tropes as plot points and bring a fresh spin on old formulas. Great reaction as always! Much love from LA :)
5:15 Hannah made me jump lol, just a guy walking in through the door. Damn that cracked me up, poor ashes ears 😂
Omg I love Hannah’s “Unbreak My Heart” in the beginning 😍😍
When Ash mentioned Supernatural and Silent Hill I thought he might recognise the actress playing Patience Buckner, the one-armed zombie girl in this movie - although to be fair that wouldn't be easy with how much makeup she had to wear here. Her name is Jodelle Ferland, a Canadian actress and was something of a "horror princess" at that time. She had guest roles in 2 episodes of Supernatural and played Sharon/Alessa in Silent Hill...
😂 22:12 They got Winchestered! Well Done Ash🤘 Also my second time watching this movie and noticed That chick that got a min with the wolf Is From Spartacus!!! She is in the Final season but🤯⚔️ Crazy
Awesome reaction guys. I was waiting for this one. Hannah is easily one of the most beautiful red heads.
OMG, the best notification, EVER
Love that you guys reacted to this. Hey, Ash, in case you're out of the loop, an Ashur spin-off of Spartacus was announce recently. Might be time to jump back into that.
I just stumbled onto your channel and I was so grateful I did! You guys are absolutely hilarious! You got a new sub.😊
The hand at the end smashing earth gave me chills the first time I saw it. This is above symbolisms 😋 It's mythology. Epic by definition. And I never expected it.
Good stuff.
Hannah is flawless! I live for her. Thanks for this reaction video to one of my favorite horror movies. Happy Holidays Ash/Hannah, youre both beautiful💙.
It's awesome how the lore of this movie universe explains all horror movies. Great reaction, love you guys!
Love this movie. Glad to see both of you react this.
This movie justifies every horror film existing in the same universe.
So fun facts;
- The "Elder Gods" that the facility warns us about is actually us, the viewers. People don't like horror movies unless they're the old-school slasher movies from the 80s, hence the archetypes need to die for it to be "successful"
- There's a bunch of horror movie tropes as monsters, namely Pinhead being the chainsaw guy, the Buckners being the family from The Hills Have Eyes and so on. Though, there is a few "famous" monsters, like the special zombies from Left 4 Dead appearing in the cubes, and my personal favorite, the space pirates from Firefly, the Reavers, throwing a dude off a balcony and into the mouth of the giant snake.
The daddy chill killed me lol
im soo glad you caught on to the references
I've just recently subscribed to the Patreon so now I've got to watch both the full length and the YT versions...I'm not complaining lol

Love you guys talking about subscribers for 3/4 of the film and there are none. Fun reaction
A movie I swear is connected to this movie, but isn’t really, is knock at the cabin featuring Dave Bautista. It’s so good
“A giant bong in your father’s van..? What are you stoned?” God this is such a good film dude. 😂
ahhh ash u were so close at the end! 💀💀💀 i’m sure others have explained already and better than i’m abt to but the characters are not like their archetypes, in ways that may not have been obvious to the “game makers” when they selected that friend group, but it was obvious to the friends within the group when their behaviors became altered to better fit those archetypes.
Im from Brazil, and i love u guys hahaha start watch u yesterday and already love
The guy with the box and the saws in his head is a reference to Hellraiser.. you really need to do a hellraiser reaction.
easter eggs everywhere in this, the one armed girl is silent hill, many more to find
I remember this movie came out of nowhere and was so different than what I was expecting. Good stuff and a fun ride. Also, Marty is the best 🤘🏽
The actor that plays Marty has good acting range. Never thought the narrator from 300 would be a badass stoner.
18:56 the way she imitates you lmaooooo ahhh thats love right there, yall are amazing and yeah this is just a fun movie honestly. Wish there were more like it, but its unique with all the references and easter eggs either way great reaction haha hell yeah!
🤣 Hannah's jump scare at 3:16! It was the TITLE GRAPHIC ffs 😂 You 2 are the absolute best!
Oh my gosh. She has a beautiful voice. I love it
One of my favorite movies to show people just cuz it the script flies off the handles right in the middle of the movie.
Love the way you were going with the whole viewer/subscribers theory for so long. That's not occurred to me before.
It's been a while since I watched the movie. But if I remember right, that isn't even in the movie. They just made it up themselves and went with it. (probably because they themselves have UA-cam subscribers). The only "audience" is for the workers who watch the cameras for surveillance purposes. No actual "subscribers". 🤣
@@reactions5783 That's right, but I understand why, because of the cameras and stuff and the people below, I think they thought they were broadcasting it. Understandbale mistake, maybe influenced, as you said, by the UA-cam connection.
I love you both so much, such a class and cute as owt couple ❤ I have just recently come across your channel and bingewatched nearly all your vids (of the films I have already seen) and omg I think out of all the film reaction teams, you are the best! Love how 'real' you both are and Hannah you are just a little pocket rocket, your reactions are hilarious but I so love how empathic you are. N Ash, honest to god mate, you have got me saying symbolisms all the bloody time, I just can't say symbols anymore 😂😂 so wish I had found your channel ages ago! God wanna say so much right now, I am going through a pretty rough time and your channel has been a much needed distraction, you have no idea so thank you my lovelies ❤️
I am seriously considering joining your Patreon at some point, I do have a few fave films that I dunno if you have seen or not, but I would love you to react to just even one of these, Dead Man's Shoes -very powerfully charged, emotionally violent film or/and Stripes, total classic with Bill Murray and John Candy.. comedy, just hilarious!! I have so many more but honestly you have so many great movies on here already. Anyhow if you could just check one of these out you would make a very poorly Mackem a very happy Mackem 😂❤ keep up the absolute classness ❤xx
Went into this movie blind and was so pleasantly surprised at the format. What a great change for horror! Great flick!
the behind the scenes on this movie is just as awesome as the movie itself.
Hannah better SANG!!! 🙌🏾 I almost threw my phone 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🥰
Loved the supernatural reference !🤣🤣
Tucker and Dale, would be right up your alley!
I think I get what Ash was trying to say. At first he didn’t like that there wasn’t a deeper connection with the characters but he realized that that’s the point. These people are horror tropes and merely representatives of the horror stereotypes (i.e., the virgin who isn’t a virgin) so we’re not supposed to actually care about them. We’re just supposed to enjoy the ride. Love this reaction yall!
One of the things I like about this movie is that you DO care about the characters, or at least don't dislike them. In a lot of horror movies (especially ones trying to be "cool"), the characters are often so unlikable, you almost find yourself routing for them to get killed off. But, with this movie, most people seem to like these characters from the start, and feel bad most of them probably aren't going to make it out alive.
The fact that they're being twisted to fit certain stereotypes doesn't make me not care about them. It makes me feel bad for them. Because they don't actually fit the stereotypes. That's the point. They're being drugged up and manipulated to fit specific roles so they can be killed for it, which isn't their fault. Personally, when I first realized what was going on, it made me hope they'd be able to fight back and survive what was being (unfairly) done to them.
1 love the supernatural reference
2 they kinda did have a few episodes like this. For one, there's the episode where they go to Hollywood because one of the screen writers are controlling Ghost.
I remember reading that this film sat in a strange post production limbo for many many years, and that it was filmed way before any of the bigger marvel films and other things the actors in this appeared in, but because of whatever issues were being battled out behind the scenes, it didn't get released until well after, which, strangely, may have actually worked in favor of the movie's success.
Lol when Hanna mentions the subscribers in the movie, UA-cam AI threw up the subscribe icon. Classic movie with a classic reaction! This made my Friday!
Haha that ainsley Harriet insert took me out! 🤣
The two of you are truly entertaining . 🤣
Paused what I was watching and immediately came here when I noticed this in the sidebar. You two are Aces, Cheers from Canada. 🥃☮❤
I avoided this movie for years because the title made it sound like a run-of-the-mill Slasher Flick. Then I noticed that it was a Joss Whedon movie, so I gave it a shot.
It instantly became, and shall forever remain, one of my favourite Horror Movies of all-time. It's a brilliant concept, executed creatively, has lots of humour, and a great cast (featuring a few Whedon-Verse Alumni).
The VVitch is a good recent horror to add to the list, The Babadook, Battle Royale too.
you two are the perfect couple, funny, entertaining and feed off of each other, Love you guys can't wait for the next one.
What a beautiful compliment mate, thank you ❤️
This movie redefined the horror genre, like it's not just a spoof movie it's an ATTACK on the slasher era. IMO there needs to be a second one but focused on the jumpscare era now
