To be fair, humanity somehow had to contain the Elder Gods in the first place. So there must once have been a world where they were running around loose and humans subdued them - more or less. And on that note, we don't really know how many Elder Gods there are or just how powerful they are, but modern weapons are a hell of a lot more powerful now than they would have been when the Gods were contained. So a few SAM missiles or artillery rounds might be able to take one down. Y'know, kinda like Pacific Rim. So the question isn't really that unreasonable. It just wouldn't have any carry-over cast.

("Gotta keep the customers satisfied.") Also, it pays to be familiar with H.P. Lovecraft when watching this, as the Ancient Ones were a clear reference to the Great Old Ones.

The scariest thing about Lovecraft lore is that even the Great Old Ones are pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to all the horrors that fill the universe. Cthulhu may be god-like to humans, but he's an insect compared to whatever birthed it.
Sadly, I imagine the actors are too old for such a thing to happen, even if hollywood was willing to make a film like that. So rather, I'd still be up for a film LIKE what you suggest. Two regular workers, regular lives, but they work in some super bizarre situation, maybe supernatural forces, or monsters, or other dimensions, or magic... a combo of super average people on one hand, and a super NONaverage situation on the other.
When I first saw this and learned of the game/sacrifices going on behind the scenes, my mind was blown! Such a unique horror movie, loved it and appreciated the twists
There are little shout-outs to just about every horror movie you can think of. "Evil Dead" certainly has a few. "Hellraiser" with the cenbobite ("Hell Lord" on the whiteboard) with the sawblades in his head, holding a sphere-like object reminiscent of the puzzle cube. "The Shining" with the scary twins. "It" with the clown. Lots and lots of horror references throughout. "Kevin," who I assume is either a stand-in for Jason or Michael or maybe both.
I want to live in a world where Drew Goddard, Guillermo Del Toro, Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson (yeah go back and watch his horror movies) can make fun horror movies when they get inspired every five or ten years (I'm patient) without studio interference.

There is no unmade movie I want to see more than del Toros version of In the Mountains of Madness, ideally with enough budget and total creative freedom. It will never happen, but a man can dream.

Great reaction. Samantha's face when the elevators all opened was priceless. TBR, you're totally right about the Evil Dead influence. Other than the cabin itself, you noted the "angry molestation tree" on the betting board. There's the fact that both movies have the same basic arrangement of who's going to the cabin -- a flirty couple, a more shy/chaste couple, and one loner. There's also the direct shot reference of a close up on a woman's face, then the cellar door slams open suddenly in the background. You hit on my biggest question right at the end -- "did THAT count?" Kinda seems like, even if the ritual didn't go off 100% correctly, the Ancient Ones HAD to be pleased seeing everything that went down in the base. I've heard that Drew Goddard has an idea for how a sequel could work and i have to imagine it would be something along those lines.
The whole thing is allegorical for what audiences demand of studios in their horror movies, and the studios must appease the fans or else they'll be financially destroyed. The mix-up of the fool and virgin (last two surviving characters) also being mis-archetyped (as well as the others not truly fitting their stereotypes) could be a nod to how actors often get typecast.
It also fits with my personal theory that the reason the ritual failed was control. Not just the girl in a commited monogomous relationship with her boyfriend being cast as the slut while the one who slept with her college professor and didn't even notice she was in her underwear with a boy being the virgin. They talk about how its important the kids choose to trespass and yet they're essentially forcing them to do so to the point of drugging Jules to alter her behaviour, making them change their decisions "No lets split up" and more. They try to control every step of the ritual to force a result and because of that the ritual fails because right from the start the kids had no choice, from the moment they got invited to come up there rather than choosing to. Which brings me to your post the ritual failed because the scientists tried to control every detail of it could be an allegory for films failing because studios try to control every detail of them rather than taking a risk and allowing something to be produced naturally.
What audiences demand? We're not in 1988 you know not even when this movie came out hahahahahhaha... This are the stereotype that audience makes fun of in every horror movie... But good theory tho..
This is exactly right. So many people miss the entire point. The Ancient Ones are us. We get mad when the rules are changed. So many horror movies follow the exact pattern. We do not like change, so we destroy the world and wait for the next horror film to watch, in hopes that the patterns will realign.
Fun fact. This movie was highly influenced by the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer especially the 4th season. That season has the government capturing demons in underground faculties and then those demons escape and wreck havoc. Also several actors in the movie also stared on Buffy or it’s spin off Angel.
And the producer and cowriter of the movie was the same guy as the Buffy/Angel show-runner (who also did the first Marvel Avengers movie, among other things).
another fun fact: there was a cross promotional thing with this and Left 4 Dead that got scrapped and if you look closely at the scene with all the monsters in their cages you will see the Tank and the Boomer.
Yeah that first time she went "dammmn" , it was a very primal humorous exclamation that made me laugh and then she almost did it again later! It's the little things that make me come back for their reviews!

Such a funny movie. And they encouraged everyone to go into watching it in theaters as blindly as possible. I knew all about the movie, but I got a couple of buddies to see it without knowing; one of my favorite theater experiences.
The five college kids were the Scoobie Gang except for the switch in of The Scholar for Scoobie Doo. You get Daphne and Velma. You get Fred and Shaggy. They drive a van, well, an RV.
It’s such a little thing, but at the beginning I love that Jules and Curt have that little moment where they joke about Jules “knowing about books.” 😂 It hints at so many inside jokes and a shared sense of humor they’re both familiar with, and they can pick up on each other’s teasing immediately. There’s a lot of trust and mutual respect there, which makes their manipulated personalities at the cabin so stark in contrast-very watered down to “just horny and air-headed.”
24:46 I actually agree with wanting to die from the unicorn. On the one hand, it seems to be one of the quicker deaths compared to most other monsters. And on the other hand, it's a freaken unicorn.
And while we're on the subject of things in the woods, might I suggest that you watch The Village, assuming you haven't already. I know some people put it in the not so great category. but I like it. I mean, it has a very Autumnal aesthetic (or however you spell that word!) AND it has Adrien Brody. Two of my favorite things! 🤗

There are a couple of possibilities there - one is someone forgetting the earlier forcefield scene until he hits it. The other is someone remembering the forcefield is there and getting the "oh crap, that's going to be bad" anticipatory reaction instead.
Oh hell yes. My favorite horror/comedy movie of all time reacted to by my favorite reactors. 1 - Cabin In The Woods (due to it actually being funny AND scary) 2 - Young Frankenstein (A true classic) 3 - Zombieland (Bill Murray & Woody, nuff said) 4 - Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" (Not scary but funny as hell) 5 - Scary Movie
I liked this movie but I think they missed an opportunity. After Sigourney explained to them why this is all happening, the stoner guy should kill the girl. When Sigourney freaks out saying he doomed humanity he should've then blurted out that he's a virgin. If anything he was the most aware of their situation while the girl seemed oblivious and was the fool. This way the conditions are met and the ancient ones will be placated.
After this movie (And even before seeing it), my theory is that every single horror movie is secretly controlled by unknown forces guiding the characters to do the dumbest things that make no logical sense whatsoever. I blame the screenwriters. jk
A friend of mine paused this film, repeatedly, so he could look at every monitor, and try to figure out what film they were shouting out, in each room. What a great, fun movie.
This is a great choice for spooky season Another good post-modern-cabin-in-the-woods movie is *CABIN FEVER (2002),* very gory but with sly black humour
it has nothing to do with Cabin in the Woods in style or theme, but i gotta recommend, The Babadook! .. it's the best familial horror film since The Shining, imo.. takes the haunted house story and twists it into something completely unique.. more suspense than gore, like zero gore actually, and doesn't rely very heavily on jump scares.. tangentially, my favorite Jesse Williams role is Marcus in Detroit Become Human, a true choose your own adventure video game that was a Sony exclusive but I believe you can play it on PC now.. you guys should play it for the channel! it's basically an interactive movie, and unlike Telltale Games where choice is just an illusion, DBH actually has wildly different endings, you can even make decisions where characters die and that's it for their part of the story.. all characters can die or all can make it to the end! pretty sure it's the first game of it's kind to actually pull off the player choice mechanic..

Regarding Chris Hemsworth's role in this and Thor.. Technically Thor came out first, but this movie was filmed first, it just took longer to come out. He filmed Cabin in the woods in 2009, Filmed thor in 2010, Thor released in 2011, Cabin released in 2012.

There's a game that seems inspired by this movie called Lobotomy Corporation, where you have cell blocks with monsters and you're scientifically investigating them. Sometimes they get out. Sometimes they murder your entire research and development. And sometimes there's a giant red button.
Did you know that in Cabin In The Woods when Marty and Samantha are in the elevators that is actually aEaster Egg to the zombie game Left 4 Dead, if you watch the elevator scene you can see the main zombie bosses the Boomer,witch,and tank originally there was supposed to be dlc tie in with the film but the company that was making it went bankrupt.
The Japanese should have used Godzilla against the school girls for their scenario; he's a leading monster icon in that country! One problem I had with this movie was the CG bird hitting the invisible force field. It was in the trailer, and shouldn't have been in the film. It spoils what could have been a surprise later on.
As this is Joss Whedon movie there's many call backs to Buffy and Angel the series as well as other films. What with the 'ancient ones' needing to be appeased, and the 'monster' storage facility that could be straight out of Buffy season 4. A great film that at the time confused/annoyed a lot of the traditional horror audience. Personally I loved it then and I still love it now. :)
One of two minor nitpicks. I think the forcefield reveal should have stayed hidden in Thor hit it. Also, Dana was the other woman in an affair, while the blonde had been in a committed relationship for years. Other than that, fantastic film
The practical creature effects in this film were done by a company started by Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street. She didn't pursue acting much after that film, but clearly wanted to keep working on horror movies in some capacity.

Another scene that is fantastic on a second or third viewing is when they are in the basement looking at all the objects. You can try to identify which monstrosity each object will summon. Other movies hinted at are hellraiser (the guy with the saw blades in his head) and of course IT with the clown
The Shaggy stoner guy was the best char. This movie reminded me of a mix of Evil Dead, 13 Ghosts with a Running Man type twist. Very fun horror/comedy flick.
In the camper Marty tells them society needs to be torn down and he tells Dana she come to agree with him, which she does One ting some people miss is the the Ancient Ones, is Whedon's commentary on us, the movie watching audience, and how the directors and studios are always trying appease us with blood, action and sex. What's interesting is that some of the actors you see in this movie have made appearances in other Joss Whedon projects, TV shows and movies,that he has directed or produced like Firefly, Serenity, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, Much To Do About Nothing, Angel, and Dollhouse.
I would add Dr. Horrible's sing-along as well as his run on x-men comics. It really sucks that so many of projects are great, when he turned out to be such a dirt-bag. Interesting note is that alot of his most acclaimed work (this, firefly, and others) are his ideas and he produces but, are written and directed by someone else. Often Tim Minear?
@@shawnje3072 Joss writes a lot of his stuff. On Buffy the running theme was that when a Buffy writer got complimented for a line in one of their episodes, the line was always written by Joss. I remember how excited Jane Espenson was when someone mentioned a line she actually wrote. This happened mostly on Buffy. Angel not as much as Buffy was filming at the same time. Tim Minear didn't do that on Angel as David Greenwalt was the ahowrunner. Joss did read and maje noteson each script. Tim is an absolutely fantastic writer. He wrote S2 Ep2 "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" over a weekend and his first draft was a good 75% of the shooting draft. David Greenwalt (showrunner and nicest guy) was jealous of how fast Tim could write. David was much more methodical. If Joss was listed as writer, he wrote it. He was also a script doctor for many movies like Speed, "You're fired! You're all fucking fired!" He wrote the original script for Toy Stiry so he is actually an Oscar Nominee from that. One of his unused bits was repurposed for Toy Story 2, where they use Rex as a battering ram.

American Horror Story was Tim's first post Angel show to not get canceled mid season. He is still an EP on that and 9-1-1: Lone Star (I can't not hear that in Darth Helmet's voice). I remember watching the dailies of the slow motion shots of Angel, Darla, Dru and Spike in te Boxer Rebellion flashbacks and being told that was his first time directing. He was a natural at it.

Such a funny movie. And they encouraged everyone to go into watching it in theaters as blindly as possible. I knew all about the movie, but I got a couple of buddies to see it without knowing; one of my favorite theater experiences.

It’s such a little thing, but at the beginning I love that Jules and Curt have that little moment where they joke about Jules “knowing about books.” 😂 It hints at so many inside jokes and a shared sense of humor they’re both familiar with, and they can pick up on each other’s teasing immediately. There’s a lot of trust and mutual respect there, which makes their manipulated personalities at the cabin so stark in contrast-very watered down to “just horny and air-headed.”

This was the first horror film I saw in theaters and it was something else.
And while we're on the subject of things in the woods, might I suggest that you watch The Village, assuming you haven't already. I know some people put it in the not so great category. but I like it. I mean, it has a very Autumnal aesthetic (or however you spell that word!) AND it has Adrien Brody. Two of my favorite things! 🤗

There are a couple of possibilities there - one is someone forgetting the earlier forcefield scene until he hits it. The other is someone remembering the forcefield is there and getting the "oh crap, that's going to be bad" anticipatory reaction instead.

Love this movie, such a unique take on the genre. I recently watched Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, also a really entertaining film!
I liked this movie but I think they missed an opportunity. After Sigourney explained to them why this is all happening, the stoner guy should kill the girl. When Sigourney freaks out saying he doomed humanity he should've then blurted out that he's a virgin. If anything he was the most aware of their situation while the girl seemed oblivious and was the fool. This way the conditions are met and the ancient ones will be placated.

Decent? It's fucking fun and brilliant. Imagine Sam Raimi directing Ghostbusters instead of Ivan Reitman.
it has nothing to do with Cabin in the Woods in style or theme, but i gotta recommend, The Babadook! .. it's the best familial horror film since The Shining, imo.. takes the haunted house story and twists it into something completely unique.. more suspense than gore, like zero gore actually, and doesn't rely very heavily on jump scares..
tangentially, my favorite Jesse Williams role is Marcus in Detroit Become Human, a true choose your own adventure video game that was a Sony exclusive but I believe you can play it on PC now.. you guys should play it for the channel! it's basically an interactive movie, and unlike Telltale Games where choice is just an illusion, DBH actually has wildly different endings, you can even make decisions where characters die and that's it for their part of the story.. all characters can die or all can make it to the end! pretty sure it's the first game of it's kind to actually pull off the player choice mechanic..

The guy with the puzzle and saw blades in the head is a definite nod to Hellraiser (1987) a must watch horror movie if you haven't seen it.
This is a great satire of the genre and still holds itself together seriously well enough.

Regarding Chris Hemsworth's role in this and Thor.. Technically Thor came out first, but this movie was filmed first, it just took longer to come out. He filmed Cabin in the woods in 2009, Filmed thor in 2010, Thor released in 2011, Cabin released in 2012.
I didn't see Chris Hemsworth on the bike coming, and I was very lucky, because it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen

The Japanese should have used Godzilla against the school girls for their scenario; he's a leading monster icon in that country!

One problem I had with this movie was the CG bird hitting the invisible force field. It was in the trailer, and shouldn't have been in the film. It spoils what could have been a surprise later on.
As this is Joss Whedon movie there's many call backs to Buffy and Angel the series as well as other films. What with the 'ancient ones' needing to be appeased, and the 'monster' storage facility that could be straight out of Buffy season 4. A great film that at the time confused/annoyed a lot of the traditional horror audience. Personally I loved it then and I still love it now. :)
You should watch the comedy/horror classic "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948). It's a lot of fun!
One of two minor nitpicks. I think the forcefield reveal should have stayed hidden in Thor hit it. Also, Dana was the other woman in an affair, while the blonde had been in a committed relationship for years. Other than that, fantastic film
One of the lines in the script was "chaos on every screen" and that was a dream come true for horror fans

The practical creature effects in this film were done by a company started by Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street. She didn't pursue acting much after that film, but clearly wanted to keep working on horror movies in some capacity.

I liked this better the second time I watched this.
Another scene that is fantastic on a second or third viewing is when they are in the basement looking at all the objects. You can try to identify which monstrosity each object will summon. Other movies hinted at are hellraiser (the guy with the saw blades in his head) and of course IT with the clown

The Shaggy stoner guy was the best char. This movie reminded me of a mix of Evil Dead, 13 Ghosts with a Running Man type twist. Very fun horror/comedy flick.

In the camper Marty tells them society needs to be torn down and he tells Dana she come to agree with him, which she does One ting some people miss is the the Ancient Ones, is Whedon's commentary on us, the movie watching audience, and how the directors and studios are always trying appease us with blood, action and sex. Movies to see beforehand: any vampire/werewolf, Creature from the Black Lagoon(merman), The Hills have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw, Hellraiser, Friday 13th/Halloween, The Purge,..honestly almost any horror movie out there has some kind of reference in this.

This was fun to watch you react to - had heard of the movie but didn't know anything about it, so it's like going to the movies and with your friends on opening night lol. You know, since it's October and you mentioned killer clowns, you should do Killer Klowns from Outer Space - ridiculous fun.
What's interesting is that some of the actors you see in this movie have made appearances in other Joss Whedon projects, TV shows and movies,that he has directed or produced like Firefly, Serenity, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, Much To Do About Nothing, Angel, and Dollhouse.
I would add Dr. Horrible's sing-along as well as his run on x-men comics. It really sucks that so many of projects are great, when he turned out to be such a dirt-bag. Interesting note is that alot of his most acclaimed work (this, firefly, and others) are his ideas and he produces but, are written and directed by someone else. Often Tim Minear?

@@shawnje3072 Joss writes a lot of his stuff. On Buffy the running theme was that when a Buffy writer got complimented for a line in one of their episodes, the line was always written by Joss. I remember how excited Jane Espenson was when someone mentioned a line she actually wrote. This happened mostly on Buffy. Angel not as much as Buffy was filming at the same time. Tim Minear didn't do that on Angel as David Greenwalt was the ahowrunner. Joss did read and maje noteson each script. Tim is an absolutely fantastic writer. He wrote S2 Ep2 "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" over a weekend and his first draft was a good 75% of the shooting draft. David Greenwalt (showrunner and nicest guy) was jealous of how fast Tim could write. David was much more methodical. If Joss was listed as writer, he wrote it. He was also a script doctor for many movies like Speed, "You're fired! You're all fucking fired!" He wrote the original script for Toy Stiry so he is actually an Oscar Nominee from that. One of his unused bits was repurposed for Toy Story 2, where they use Rex as a battering ram.
@@johncampbell756 Tim also worked on "The X-Files". He's currently working on "American Horror Story", and he should have been Emmy-nominated for writing the Angel episode you mentioned. It's actually a favorite of lead David Boreanaz.

American Horror Story was Tim's first post Angel show to not get canceled mid season. He is still an EP on that and 9-1-1: Lone Star (I can't not hear that in Darth Helmet's voice).
I remember watching the dailies of the slow motion shots of Angel, Darla, Dru and Spike in te Boxer Rebellion flashbacks and being told that was his first time directing. He was a natural at it.
